She has either contended or associated with you in her civil strifes, and you have all learned lessons from her or have felt her influence in the College. It is because of these friendly contests that the members of ,QO love Columbia so dearly, for while teaching others, we ourselves have been taught. '89, you have come into contact with '90 in a more serious manner than either of the other classes. But While you gained some severe experiences in former days, we are no longer Sopho- mores and Freshmen, and we greet you with the most kindly feeling. '91, you too have learned something from us, in field sports, boating and football. Praise is due to you for following our example and defeating the Harvard freshmen at New London. May you ever uphold Columbia's fame. '92, it is with affection that '90 speaks to you, for you are her child. You have already, by your athletic and foot- ball record, shown that you possess the right material. May your successes increase with your age. To Columbia's many friends a word is due. We thank you for your interest in and love for our College. While this is ,QO,S book, we have not forgotten that it is also Columbia's book, and we have endeavored, so far as possible, to present for your perusal a correct report of the year's work in literature, society and ath- letics and so, to give you a glimpse of our College life. And last, the editors would address their classmates : We have endeavored to do justice to you, and the book speaks for itself. In the work of compiling, we have missed the aid of one of the most valued members of the Board, John Valance Moss, who was obliged to leave the Class when this College year began, on account of severe illness, and whose death, on November 28, filled our hearts with sorrow. Classmates, with the consciousness that we have done our best, We present to you this, your COLUMBIAD. 7
