Michael I. Sovern, L.L.B., L.L.D. l l President Columbia University of Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Each of you has completed challenging and strenuous. yet also exciting years at P8LS, among the finest medical schools in this country. On this high achievement you are to be warmly congratulated. We have prepared you well. if we have taught you to expect and welcome change, to be prepared for current knowledge becom- ing obsolete. and to know how to keep up with progress and acquire new knowl- edge. Although not part of the formal curriculum. I hope that you have sensed. how much the world of the physician is changing. how much greater are the public's expectations of a physician for high professional and personal standards and lifestyle. I hope you have found role models among the faculty, models which will help you in preserving what must be constants ofthe profession and in seeking roots in tradition while setting the pace for the future. Both in science as in clinical practice, the physician succeeds by keeping up with new knowledge, forever curi- ous and with a flair for spotting the unusual and unexpected, letting the patient have the benefits of those advances. which have stood the test of critical testing, openly conducted. Above all. for the physician the patient is a human being. en- titled to our compassion. dignity and respect. Henrik H. Bendixen, M.D.
