Fa President Columbia University Michael I. Sovern, L.L.B., L.L.D. if of Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Each of you has completed challenging and strenuous, yet also exciting years at PGS, among the finest medical schools in this country. On this high achievement you are to be warmly congratulated. YVe have prepared you well, if we have taught you to expect and welcome change, to be prepared for current knowledge becoming obsolete, and to know how to keep up with progress and acquire new knowledge. Although not part ofthe formal curriculum, I hope that you have sensed, how much the world ofthe physi- cian is changing, how much greater are the publics expectations ofa physi- cian for high professional and personal standards and lifestyle. I hope you have found role models among the faculty. models which will help you in presenfing what must be constants ofthe profession and in seeking roots in tradition while setting the pace for the future. Both in science as in clinical practice, the physician succeeds by keeping up with new knowledge, lor- ever curious and with a flair for spotting the unusual and unexpected, let- ting the patient have the benefits ofthose advances, which have stood the test of critical testing, openly conducted. Above all, for the physician the patient is a human being, entitled to our compassion, dignity and respect. Henrik H. Bendixen, M. D. Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Henrik H. Bendixen, M.D.
