To the Class of 1961 I have before me, as I begin this brief message, a recent issue of Chemical Engineering News in which the editor says, Once the firm dedication to excellence crumbles, that which remains can be only second-rate. It can happen to the individual among his fellows, a pro- fession among professions, or a nation among nations. Throughout the years that you have been in college, it has been such a dedication to excellence that has motivated the faculty in holding constantly before you the image of a great and distinguished profession and in exhorting you to rise to the challenge it offers. Among you are those who will influence and even shape the role to be played by Pharmacy in serving the health needs of the world. As a start, and as evidence of your sense of responsibility, keep up your membership in the A. Ph. A. and through it serve your profession. When President Kennedy said, Ask not what America can do for you — ask what you can do for your country, he was simply expressing the sense of stewardship which lies within the breast of every man and only needs to be exercised. As pharmacists and as citizens, your stewardship is manifold, with ties to church, to country, to profession, and to college, to name but a few. In every instance, know the joy of belonging and of giving of yourself. There ' s nothing equal to it. Your Alma Mater wishes you well. E. E. Leuallen, Dean A Message to the Class of 1961 As I stand at Commencement Day, and observe you, the students who have succeeded in earning the degree of Bachelor of Science, I derive a sense of great personal satisfaction and accomplishment in the role that I have played, both as instructional officer and in an administrative capacity, in your academic lives. I cannot help but think back to the days when I had the opportunity to talk with most of you prior to your admiss ion to this college. I am impelled to compare the then callow freshman with the now mature senior, and I marvel at the intellectual and emotional growth that has taken place within each of you. Within your personal limitations, each of you has met the demands made upon you; each of you has achieved success. Success in life is not subject to quantitative measurement, contrary to popular opinion. Subject as you are to the tyrannies of your environments, social, economic, and intellec- tual, your ability to perceive and recognize opportunities, coupled with strong motiva- tions, will bring success, as you define it, into focus. Will you be prepared to cope with it? Remember that whatever path you tread, the choice will be yours, and yours alone. Only you can accept the full responsibility for what you become. But the choices that you do make, can be governed by your own past experiences and those of others who have the wisdom to guide you. I look forward to greeting each of you individually many times in the future. I am eager to learn of your progress in the future; you can be certain to find a warm welcome here at the college whenever the spirit moves you to visit with us. Make it soon! I extend to each of you all my sincere wishes for continued successful achievement. Samuel S. Liberman Associate Dean for Student Affairs

To the Class of 1961 I accept with pleasure the invitation to convey to you, the members of the Class of 1961 of the College of Pharmacy, my greeting and word of congratulation upon your completion of your course of studies. As you know, the successful conclusion of your formal training by no means marks the completion of your education. With proficiency which has satisfied the exacting conditions of your school you have completed an important phase of your professional preparation. The years ahead, however, will be no less years of learning. I hope you have gained from your studies an appreciation of the joys of intellectual curiosity. I hope your enthusiasm for investigation, for scientific exploration, will grow with your future. More than all, I hope you will be ever mindful of the responsibility you owe to the com- munity in the practice of your profession. As your opportunity for service increases, so does the obligation for the discharge of this responsibility in the public interest. You have my best wishes for years that will be happy and in the deepest sense rewarding Grayson Kirk, President
