NOTE Because there were no records, it was impossible to compile and print a list of past graduates in this year book. We will appreciate it if the purchasers of this book will send a list of names of persons in their graduating class and the year they graduated at Columbia School. We hope by doing this we will attain a complete roster for the future year books, and be able to organize an Alumni Association. Please send your list of names to the - Columbia School Alumni Association 150 Columbus Road Mount Vernon, Ohio xA 0 S S' C6 y a , O O 412Q:'m' 'C Q-mal Q U WF fic WL fi: -', fU'i'- ' gi V1 ' , 1, 0 ERNON 7767 HISTORY OF COLUMBIA SCHOOL The little red school house, or the one room school, which quite a lew still remember attending was the grassroots of our new American educational system and the nucleus ol' our mushrooming consolidated school system today. The first known school in Clinton Township that led to the Columbia School, was located on the Columbus Road on ground which is now owned by I arquahr's, Lepley's, Ashcrafts, and Wolf's, It was built about 1840 and torn down about 1903. This school became overcrowded due to the glassworkers coming into this area, so the students were sent to a building located at 527 South Main Street, which is now the Clinton Township House. About 1908 the old Columbia School was built, and called Clinton School. This structure was of cement blocks, four rooms in all, two down and two up. While this district felt sure it had enough room, other schools were moving toward consolidation with us. One known as the Mud Hill School located on Columbus Road on ground now owned by Clyde Black, another school prior to this was located across the highway on ground owned by Richard Anderson. The Mud Hill School was consolidated about 1910 with Prospect Hill School located where Clinton Grange Hall now is. Prospect School consolidated in 1915 with Clinton School. Of course consolidation meant transporting the pupils: first by horsedrawn sleds in winter, then by private car qcalled a J ewetty, then a Model T Ford bus was purchased by the Board of Education and driven by one of the neighbors and father of three pupils, Harry Robertson. This vehicle had to be coaxed, petted, cajoled, and pushed -- a frail vehicle indeed, but advancement! In 1922 the Clinton School felt need for more room, due to the increased consolidation so a levy was voted on and passed. Four more rooms of brick construction were added, which made us eight rooms. In 1924 the addition was completed, and the graduates of that year had a choice of two names: The Columbus or The Columbi School. The choice was the latter, so this was how our present school arrived at its name. Still more schools were to follow. In 1937 Columbia and a portion of the Liberty Township schools consolidated. This meant abandoning the Polk School ton Old Delaware Roady, the Friendship School ton New Delaware Roady, and the Fairview School Q1-1X2 miles southwest of Bangs off the Columbus Roady. One of our present faculty taught at these schools and came with her students when the consolidation was made - Miss Anna Brown, a devoted and thoughtful teacher. In 1957 a modern, fireproof school building was completed which is now our present Columbia School. I..-.....-..- -..- ..- ---. ...---I -..........--.- ---F---.I I 1. This is the 15th annual reunion of the graduating class of H1961 . Cindy Columber, our successful president, is trying to get order. Cindy went to Washington, D. C. to become a secretary and is now the wife of a senator from California. Alan Stultz was kept away from our reunion because of difficulties with his latest rocket ship. He is one of our worst U. S. scientists. We see Carolyn King has lost her figure. I guess it's from working in a candy factory as a sampler. George Mozingo is a famous basketball personality. He now is a star of the Professional Red Heads . Bonnie Parker has a dark tan. She has just returned from India where she cap- tured her fourth elephant. Present is Ernie johnson, now a famous cornet player. He should be after play- ing for eight years in the High School Band. And there sits Linda Close. She looks a bit worn and bedraggled. Could it be from teaching the eighth grade at Columbia School? Roy McFarland, enjoying some punch, has just put his latest invention on the market. It is a gadget called a mouse trap . Sitting next to Roy is Wanda Kiser. Her boyfriend joined the navy and found a wife in Lisbon, leaving Wanda to face life as an old maid. Unable to be here is Chucky Gamble who is recovering from wrestling with a gorilla on his latest African safari. Cathy Leighty has fulfilled her dream of going into nursing. She is the head nurse at our U. S. hospital on the moon. Joe Dinsmore is now a men's hair stylest. He has fourteen female assistants. This makes Ioe a very happy man. Present is Bob Stamper, who is now working in a bean cannery. Several times he has been caught eating the beans he was supposed to be canning. We are honored to have among us Katrinka Ketter, the first woman President . Already she completly changed the constitution. The country is on the verge of a complete breakdown. Van Payne, the world's saddest clown is present. But Kenny Conant is on his way to the moon as the pilot of a Catalina rocket. Having had seven failures, we wish him the best of luck this time. Cheryl Chalfant won an academy award this spring for her fine performance as the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood . Chuck Fulton is now working in a paper mill. He says the paper the manufacture is excellent for paper airplanes. Unable to be here is Terry Elbin. He is a mathematican now. Presently he is working on the problem 2 + 2 +4. There stands Beverly Wagner, famous for her red hair. She has just opened an- other Red Head motel at the South Pole. Larry Cordray is now working in a gun factory. He tests the guns to see if they work properly. Already four of his co-workers are wounded. Leslie Peck, present, is getting up in the stockmarket. He owns 1X2 share of stock With us again is Bernice Bennett, a very capable secretary. Her fingers are a little stiff tonight. She just won the state speed typing championship. Present is Linda Willams who has been training hyhenes to copy her laugh. Arnold Gillespie is busy at his job. He is one of the world's greatest flagpole sitters. Cheryl Kleiner and her husband are planning to form their own baseball team. They just had their ninth son last month. In case you noticed that three foot white mouse tied out front, it's Keith Coffing's latest pet. fIsn't that a little ridiculous, Keith?J julia Anderson has finally arrived. She is a happy farm wife milking twenty-eight cows morning and night. Last but not least, we see Rockie Wilguess. He is a famous watchmaker in Switz- erland. He has torn thousands of watches apart and none of them are working yet! ...X CLASS OF 1962 Shirley Ashcraft Garry Black George Breithaupt Linda Brown Holly Bostwick Susann Bostwick Beverly Cline Phyllis Close Bill Conant Larry Dean Cheryl Dexter Diana Gardner Mike Hall Carolyn Hess Judy Harrington Marilee Harrison Jim Hoar Peggy James Linda Johnson George Killen Raymond Kiser Susie Lane Cheryl Lang Don Leibel Cheryl Nicholls Karen Parker Janice Phillips Jerry Rafferty Bob Reffitt Charles Robison ., 'T i R,-QA - - . laz pl X wif' J 7 bg s Q 5- , Lrlolf' .
