They have done a wonderful job representing River in perfor- mances throughout the year with a special performance at the end of the year during both lunches in the cafeteria. Our Concert Choir had an ex- citing year. They performed in the Rotunda at the Capital and received very good scores in large group contests, as well as, performing at Vancouver Mall and other places. The Sophomore Chorus did an outstanding job, also. The received first place in the cann- ed food drive. They performed in winter and spring concerts in- cluding singing for the junior high classes. Distributive Education Clubs of America, other- wise known as DECA, are a national leadership club based on marketing and retail business. DECA club members range from grades 10 to 12. Sophomore year is called prep year, because although some sophomores do have jobs, they are usually too young to work. Instead, they study various jobs, careers and working environments. In their junior and senior years, students must have jobs and usually compete in job-related areas at DECA conferences. DECA members set up a variety of fund raisers for charity, as well as for the DECA Club. The ac- tivities this year include selling key chains and calendars and putting on the annual homecoming talent and fashion shows. The money that is earn- ed goes to help send DECA members to area and from other schools by taking tests to demonstrate their knowledge of the business world. Running the student store is yet another part of DECA duties. The third year seminar class manages the student store and the students from intro. and co-op help run it by working their study period. All benefits from students store go to the DECA fund. The student store provided CRHS with snacks to feed a hunger pain or with supplies needed for school. Thanks should be given -to the members for making the student store possible. Front Row L to R: Curt Hader, Monika Barger. Kelly Schroeder, Kristy Gildart, Brian Rugg. Depending on the size of the class, two to four girls are chosen to par- ticipate as brides in this event. Everyone has a part in the wedding. There are committees such as decorations, food, music, invitations. The bridesmaids and groomsmen for the wedding parties were Tracy Sheuerman, Jennifer Thomas, Kim Session. When a student is exchanged and comes to the US. he or she lives with a host family, and are considered as a member of the family for the length of their stay. The exchange students who will graduate from River this year are the following: Issabella Mshimba, living with the Smith family; Heidi Huotari, living with the Birland family; Hug Schouten, living with the Halleck fami- ly; Charles Schweicher, living with the MacDonald family; and Gabriela Nen- ninger living with the McAllister family. Other students who visited River for only a short time were; Fernado Luis Suarez from Bolivia, J. Gerado Fer- nandez Atilano from Phillipine Islands, Hideyuki (Oscar) Iwaki from Japan, and Marco Antonio Bothello from Brazil. We at Columbia River High School hope that the students ' visit here was pleasant, and that they will take home with them part of our culture as we have taken to our hearts a part of their culture in getting to know them personally. Horticulture This year ' s horticulture classes did everything from planting seeds to landscaping miniature model homes. Under the direction of Mr. Dave Lambert, Vancouver School District ' s Teacher of the Year, students learned to identify plants as well as grow and take care of them. The first-and second-year students together held two plant sales in the main hall to pay for transportation to and from many horticulture contests including the state contest, at which the team received second, third, and fourth place banners. This year ' s big horticulture project was building a brick Senior Sidewalk between the library and the 400 wing. According to Forensics coach, Terry Glafka. The team consisted of fourteen intelligent, hardworking juniors, and seniors. They competed in many debates this season. Their first tournament was on November 13 and 14, at St. Martins in Lacy, Washington. LeVin Harris was the big winner there. Other tournaments were on December 4 and 5 at Western Washington University. Bellingham, February 5 and 6 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. And Lewis and Clark College in Portland on February 12 and 13. The district tournament took place here on February 26 and 27. The team of Lynelle Waite and Carol Camp took first in district, which qualified them for state. State took place at the UPS on March 13th. Carol Camp, Mark Cole, and Vickey Wag- goner all placed in their individual events. Not only was this the largest group Mrs. Glafka ever took to state, but LeVin Harris placed 2nd, the first time anyone from Columba River placed at state. The highlight of this season was that the school, and nine of the Forensics team members joined the National Forensics League. This year ' s fund raising went very well, it included a garage sale, the Sadie Hawkins dance, and sale of basketball game tickets. Chant ' s New Qystem Quccessful The 1981-82 school year brought to the Chant not only a new editorial staff, but a new hyar- chical system of organizing them. Instead of an Editor-in-Chief, a Managing Editor ' s job was created, along with a board of department editors. The new system met with great success as this was one of the best years yet. A majority of the editorial staff will return next year, as they are mostly juniors. The editorial staff includes: Managing Editor Clara Johnson, Advertising Editor Mike Rochel, News Editor Michelle Reed, Feature Editor Carol Moyers, Sports Editor Cheri Lindstrom, and Circulation Editor Fred Grandy. Tyee Staff The 1982 Tyee worked well together under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Kim Sessions and Copy Editor Michelle Hefflin. Kim, who was the only sophomore in the ' 81 staff, attended year- book camp that summer and became the first Junior ever to be Editor-in-Chief. The staff was made up of students who wanted to get involved in making the book, because of dissatisfaction with previous year- books or just to preserve high school memories. They found out that yearbook making was not easy and that the biggest problem was getting pictures for layouts. All-in all, despite frantic deadlines and lack of photos, the staff had a fun and productive year — And hopefully an equally good yearbook. Mike Anderson selects some prints for the 1982 yearbook. Karyn Coons, Rhodora Estigoy, Kristy Gildart, Doug Preuss and Tracy Tingly brought forth real leader- ship and pride to River. These 5 had many accomplishments: Homecoming Dance was one, but the biggest was the Senior Breakfast and Talent Show. This is one of the biggest events for Seniors and it went really well. The council worked very hard and we would like to thank them. This year ' s Junior Class Council consisted of 5 very talented and outgoing Juniors. Leah Arneson, Cindy Hogan, Kari Ooster- veen, Tim Potter, and Scott Smith showed real team work. Some activities accomplished by this year ' s council were, Key Chains, TOLO Court voting and the biggest job of all, Junior-Senior Prom. The Junior Class Council did a really great job and showed what real team work can do. Sophomores Starting High Sch ool can be an exciting thing, and with the help of 5 young ladies the year was great for all. Marijean Baird, Amy Gwinn, Shelli Johnson, Vicki Newbill and Sheryl Small real- ly came through with some great activities and fund raisers. Homecoming and TOLO decorations, helping organize assemblies and other activities made the year fun. Some fund raisers accomplished by these girls were: Baby Pictures Contest, and Santa-Grams. These girls did a great job all together and we hope they continue the good work. Executives If you have a problem that hasn ' t been solved, it ' s probably because you won ' t get involved. This was the motto of the 1981-82 Executive Council consisting of President Mike Miller, Vice President Missi Dynes, Ac- tivities Coordinator Ann Price, Secretary Paige Gon- zalez, and Treasurer Darla Smarz. The council strove to better the activities, attitude and unity of the entire stu- dent body. Some of the basic responsibilities that the officers held included approving all purchases, and overseeing social events. In accordance with their pledge to get more people in- volved and better informed the council re-enstated the student representation system. The members of the council felt that indeed their goal of unity and better attitude was achieved. It was evidenced in the great amount of support that Mike, Missi, Ann, Paige, and Darla received in virtually every pursuit. Some problems were solved because everyone got involved. That made 81-82 a great year for everyone. Executive Council hopes that the underclassmen will continue in this, more spirited tradition and gives its har- tiest thanks to all the Chiefs at Columbia River during the 81-82 school year. ■EJ fiSJPv Exec ' s fearless leader Bill Mitchell.
