With the bestowing of the diplomas this class shall have mouthed its last upon the stage. Realizing tha-t the separationi of the memlbers of the class impending it is bo-th fitting and proper at this time to turn back to pages of time over the past four years. The class of '28 has a record of which it is justly proud. We have stood bright, acamedically and otherwise. We have been thru four in- spections by the Military 'Honor Board and have acquitted ourselves with honor. We have seen and been engaged in the organization of the Honor Council which has been so vastly beneficial to the school. After being together for the past four years the thought of dispersal is the only shade of sadness that tinges the joy of graduation. It would be impossible for any historian to analyze iproper and record adequately the spiriit of this class. I, as historian merely state that the spirit of the class is the mast valued element in its history. Our officers have always carried their part well and this year is es- pecially so. Our president, Captain Greer, of Shelywbville, Tennessee is all that a class president could be and is loved and respected by every member of the corps. Vice-president McLemore and Secretary and Treasurer Law- rence have also wforked untiringly and unceasingly for the good of the class. the corps and the school. And as we leave forever the halls of this academy we say to the under- classnien: Listen to the words of wisdom, Listen to the words of warning, All our strength is in our union, All our danger is in discord. . - . C l i fford Mann Secretary and Treasurer e.,e ..ee...,.e.., .,e,e o W illiam Herbert We, the Sophomores, came to Columbia Military Academy to get an education. For we were not satisfied with the school from which we came. We have found out that this is a much better school in many respects. It is better academically than any school in the South and has better equipment. Every boy in school enjoys each day that goes by for there is always something new taking place. This year the Sophs have had one of the best years of any Sophomore class in the history of the schoolg more boys have made high scholastic records and also called the attention of the Cadet Corp to their deeds on the athletic field. We expect to see many of our members as great men in thc business world before many years are past. At the beginning of the year the Sophomore Class elected officers to guide them through the coming season, which they have all done wondcrfully well. .ccgggr N THE RECALL, 1928 El Ol r ifiiif 1 44 IZ gg ll Q - 4 an aan 0 'f-uw'-avr' 0 rf H ' FKESHMHN Q 3 ?i,T?1f A ,Q , ff J ::., Q? 4 ', ff l ,Y , 4 - ,7 v 2 ' - -. E dward Smith Secretary and Treasurer . .... . e,..ee.,r,A. George E. Hulan In the Fall of 1927 a group of Freshmen came to C. M. A. Very few of last year's Freshmen were left in this class. After the first two weeks of school class officers were elected as fol- lows: Moore, presidentg Smith, vice-presidentg Hulan G., secretary and treasurer. Many of this class went out for athletics and we had a few representatives in the C club. Our military was very efficient, many small boys attained First Class privates and these are very fine propects for cadet officers in the future. The Freshw man Class has also proved themselves as efficient in academics as well as in military. A great number of this class have held long 95 and 90 list positions and only a few have been placed on aca- demic limits. The Freshmen are very proud of their class when it comes to academics. Most of this class will be back next year and we are sure they will make as good Sophs as they have Fresh- ies. We are all hoping that some day we will be Seniors at C. M. A. Every boy in school that had any chance whatsoever to lbe made an officer or a non-commission olticer was eiven it on one of the temporary officers list of which there were three. This plan proved a success in every way as it made each cadet keep on ihis toes doine' his ,best at all times. On February 6, 1928 the permanent officers list was puiblished. This made officers and ranked them according' to their previous record and per- ioi-mance This year we have three inspections. two of which have already taken place. Major Harry J. Maloney, co-area R. O. T. fl. officer lllF'UfCiQfl ns on February lst. The corps performed plausibily for him in a parade. close order, and extended order drill. He commented on our plant, quflrters and equipment. Our showing was such that ihe recom-mended us for Honor School Inspection. Major General Richmond P. Davis. commander of the fourth co-area. inspected us on March the 30th. He looked over the plant, quarters, and equipment. later received a review. The usual 'hono's and salutes doc a general were tendered him. This is the first time in the history of C. M A. a Corps-area commander has inspected. The Honor School Inspection will take place May the 6th and '7th. Every cadet that has been throufeh one of these inspections knfws it to consist of a complete and thorough examination of the theory of all classes and every phase of drill. Five weeks before this inspection occurs all classes wifl hs'-A coverfl their theory work. From this time until May the Gth a complete review will be held giving at least one day to each 'topic of drill and theory covered during' the year. This will be a ,ereat aid to eaoh and every caflet and should enable us to make a much .better showing' before the honor board than we have in the past. Making a summary of 1927 and 1928, I believe the military department has spent a very profitable year. -..gg E THE RECAL mnif' -,ff L. 1923 1 0 n V4 1 0 I I II I I I I I I I II --zu-. 'Ln Eh THE RECALL. 1928 - A J . The Varsity Football Squad THE RECALL. 1928 FOOTBALL At the beginning of the year the call for candidates for the football team was met with much enthusiasm and about fifty men reported out. There were very few players of last year's team back and as a result a new team had to be built with Lawrence, Mann E., Captaing Mann C., and Smiley as the main supports. Men from last year's second team were Payne, Sprinkle, Isaacs, Palmer, Bainbridge and Phillips. At the end of the year, in addition to the above named, the following men were considered worthy of having a letter: Herr, Waddle. Carter K., Bryson, Rayburn, Carr, Strong and Cunning-i ham C., Manager. Although unsuccessful in the high score standpoint, the team went through the season with a fine spirit and never gave up the fight. The Bulldogs were the only ones in the State to score on Tennessee's Prep. Champions. The squad made one over-night trip which was to Bowling Green, Ky. While up there the fellows had a chance to look over Kentucky's famous horses and beautiful women which the state is noted for. At this point we deem it essential to say a word in favor of our Captain and Manager, who worked unceasingly in the con- struction of their formidable fighting machine. In the paragraphs that have preceded this one and in those that follow we cannot begin to enumerate the achievements of this group of warriors who have battled so courageously for the love of their school. The attitude and environment in which these men worked -cannot be lauded to forcibly. It took some unknown quality in the heart of each one to tackle and block in the heat of early fall when some cool and delightful rendezvous was calling from nearby towns. In closing we wish to add that our hopes and aspirations are centered on next year's team. With Palmer as Captain, Bainbridge .Alternate-captain and Steifel Manager we feel that our desire for a team of super men is quite secure. ...NA THE RECALL. 1928 49 H ,Q The Varsity Basketball Squad THE RECALL,192S o a il ll l I II 12 il ll Y in uc: BASKETBALL After the Thanksgiving holiday the announcement for regular parctice was made and everything was fixed to develop a winning team. When the prospects arrived We found that there were no letter men back and very few who had played on teams of other schools. But not discouraged the coaches worked the men daily so by a process of elimination they picked out the best fifteen men. Everybody worked hard and earnestly ibecause they were almost all green and were eager to learn this sport. With this hard work they pro- gressed a great deal as the season went on. Though lbeing defeated at times they still kept that old C. M. A. fight and spirit. After a very hard schedule the team went to the Tennessee Interscholas- tic Athletic Association Tournament at Nashville and picked out one of the fbest .teams in the South although defeated they came home with their heads still high because they were still full of that Bull Dog spirit. The team that defeated them entered the finals. We will be sure of a championship team next year as we will lose only a few and the prospects are good. During the season the cadet corp, as usual gave its full moral support to the team defending its Alma Mater. Now we shall see what each menvh-er did on the team to defend the court for C. M. A. Greer or Tommy came to C. M. A. five years ago but did not show much interest in athletics until last year at Basketball. He showed great ability as a forward. He returned this year as Captain and a star forward. We are sorry he will not return. Mann C. or t'C.liff came to C. M. A. last year and as in other sports shone out in Basketball. He worked hard and this year was appointed alter- nate Captain and starred as Standing Guard 'breaking up many scores. We are glad he will return next year. Lawrence or Oog has been with us for three years and became interest- ed in Basltefiball last season. He made a fine showing at forward. We sure will miss him next year. Orderica or Bob came to us last year from Mexico. When Basket- ball season was ushered in he went to practice steadily but was handicapped. This year he turned out and made a very good sh-owing at Forward. He will be with its ntxt fear. Faulkner or Bobbie came to C. M. A. this year and took the pre-sea-2 son training under Coach Sandy and won the position of Center where he showed great ability. He will be a great help to the team next year. Waddle or Red came here this year also. He reported f-or practice and stuck with it. He displayed great ability on the court as Standing Guard where he broke up many plays. We will all miss our good friend next year. Carter lf. or the The Village H. W. came to us just this year and showed great interest in all sports especially so in Biasbetibiall. He was -in all round player and played any position well. We are glad he will return next year. Edmundson or Eat-on came to us this year also and reported for duty on the court. He stuck like the rest and played well when his chance came. Ile will come back to us next year and prove a great help to the team. Hardie or Flash came to us just in the middle of Basketball seawn hut this handicap did noit stop him from showing great possibilities. Ile will return next year and help make a winning team for C. M. A. We cannot forget the manager who is always a very important part and a great help to the team. As the first afternoon of practice came many prospects were seen tossing the ball from one to the other, the spirit of the national sport was in full bloom at C. M. A. As the season slowly moves on we find that the prospects are fastly developing into a team of the true C. M. A. form. There were but few letter men back from last year's squad, but the squad was not all discouraged. for we are all aware of the capabil- ity of our fine coaches of developing a winning team from green material. We were very fortunate also in receiving much. good material in the new men at school who have made fine records at other schools in this branch of athletics. It is certainly a pleasure already to see the team work out for the prospects are mighty fine and the hearty C. M. A. spirit is found there in full blast. We are sure the team will win much praise for themselves and for the school as have the teams in the past. The first few games going off with such a flash gives us even more reason to believe that this will be another banner year in the national sport at C. M. A., and with Lawrence as Captain of the team we should expect to head the list. L 45.. . O. picture of 1928 it reminds me of the happy days I spent with the bunch at C. M. A. I see Jack Kirk reading a letter from a girl which says- Don't practice on mel' and as I look in another part of the room I see Lyman Lamb and Raymond Palmer showing the latest dance steps from Paris. I next see Abie Cabrera reading an M. S. Sz T. book for future knowledge of revolutions in Mexico. Bobbie Faulkner and Abie Finch have just come in arguing about lawyers and doctors in Barnio. Mac Carter was just relating to Corn Baldwin about going different fraternities in college next year. Eaton Edmonson and Lucy French were arguing about their Mississippi mud and Kentucky horses. I look at the table and see 0. B. Singletary learning new methods of cheating ai Bridge. Chuck Cunningham figuring how to make a fortune on an ice wagon. Cowboy Block was telling about the new gun trick he learned from reading Ace High. Mighty Strong thinking of a new way of getting off the train at Erwin, Pa. without using the grapevine and sand-pile. I see Lucien Connell thinking of his girl in Nashville. Doc Baldwin looking cheerful as he thinks of how Hap was going to put hap in his happiness. Jug Haynes just came in telling about how he got gipped on the officers list. Next l see Joe Shirley counting his pennies and Skeet Henderson trying to bum two bits to throw a big time in Manchester next summer. Perk Perkins is over in the corner writ- ing a letter to Margaret. All this makes me wish we were all together once more. June 1st. 19115 Col. I. A. Cunningham Columbia Military Academy Columbia, Tenn. Dear Colonel: I was thinking a few days ago of the days I spent at C. M. A. and I thought that it would be a good idea to write and tell you what my old fraternity brothers are doing. Cosby and Katterjohn have joined the Salvation Army and may be seen playing their instruments on street corners in one of our large cities. Brenizer is the proprietor of a moonshine still on the side ol' Lookout Mountain. He also owns several speakeasies in Chatta- nooga. Barham possesses the most complete collection of stamps in America. Nick Marlowe and the Faucett Brothers are professors at the University of Alabama. Haynes J. is an instructor in aesthetic dancing at Vassar. Isaacs is a traveling salesman. He presents an attractive figure in his brown derby, green shirt and pink spots. Payne is a barker in a circus. He may be seen in front of thc tent that contains the Wah-ho, Wah-hoo bird of the Alfa. I hear that your son Paul is now Mayor of Columbia. Carle is now a world famous scientist and has greatly simpli- fied the Einstein Theory. Lawrence is l3irmingham's most prominent physician. If you have a hangnail he operates for appenclicitis. Bainbridge is now a plumber and has never been known to remember his tools. Hoover, the prominent chemist, is manufacturing high ex- plosives for Scarface Al Capone's gang. Ford has become an electrical engineer and is working on inter-planetary radio. I hear that Maj. Fisher is now at the head of his own school. We have not forgotten the kindness of him and his wife. I am leaving tomorrow to take John Gilbert's place in the movies. It is with pleasant memories that I recall my days at C. M. .-X. and I extend my best wishes to you and Mrs. Cunningham. A. spirit September 'llith when the school gave its first dance of the year The old men brought their last. year eirils who came from Columbia, Franklin, Nashville, and all towns in this section. The little Gym was full ol' noise and excitement that night. Soon Freshmen began to minele and form friends that they will never forget. Everyone cijoyetl the night and the C. M. A.'s first dance was a big' success. It started the coming' year ol'l' in LlQQ,'llIlt style and the best of spirit. 'l'hanksg'ivinyg' Strut This was the first dance since the Cadet Hop in Septemiber and everyono looked l'orw:ird lo it as something which would never co-me but finally it rolled around. 'l'l1e llfle-ss Hall was decorated in Hallov.-een style, with witches, corn- H slorlts, corn :ind pumpkins every.u'here. l he iblst orchestra in Nashville was seeircil and it prnx ed to lne a biej niqht for everyone. And it really wus. Girls came from arerywhere. many from Cad:-lf: heme towns. Al nine-thirty things broltc loose and the old building' was really alive for once. At twelve..thirty the sad notes of Honic Sweet Home rang' out. Every' one hated to leave because it was the last dance of the year, and there were some cadets who would not be back with us after Christmas. Our next dance will be at home which we all look forward to. Mid-Year Formal Exams are over and all of us needed something' to cheer us up aarain. llere it is, The Mid-Year Formal. All forty-four buttons on our dreqq- blouses were polished and everything' was in the 'best of shape. Something' new happened, we were the Quests of the Graymere Coun'.r,V Club. The Virginians, the best dance orchestra in the South was there. 'l'ennessee's beautiful ladies had aathered at the Dimple of the Universe. The biggest dance of the year had come and everyone was having' the best time possible. Every cadet will long' remember this dance and wish he could attend another. Final Dance and Senior Prom. This will he the Senior's last dance at C. M. A., the last time we wear our forty-fours, the last time we see our friends from out of town, the last time we mix socially. Our parents and friends are here, graduation an-.l the end has come, for tomorrow we will be scattered to the four corners ot' the earth, never to assemble again. When the notes of Home Sweet Home have died away and we leave chapel with a lump in oar throats, and wish we could attend just one more C. M. A. dance as a cadet, but school will be over tomorrow and we will be college Freshmen. The others who come back in Se-pte-mber will make new friends and will have to carry on the C, M. A. spirit for ns. But the memory of the chapel decorated in eau' colors, the soft lights, the dreamy orchestra, our friends and their beautiful companions, and the only girl in our arms will never fade from our memory thouerh we live forever.
