Asst. Principal JAMES H. RUST Seniors: For twelve years you have looked forward to your graduation-to your commencement. For some of you it is the completion of your formal education. For others it is the stepping stone to higher learning. For all of you it is the beginning of your life's work. Columbia High School has endeavored to share with the home, the Church and the commrmity, the re- sponsibility of meeting the educational needs of the boys and girls of our school. We have tried to prepare you mentally, morally, physically, socially, and emotionally to face a complex and changing world and to be well equipped to serve mankind. I believe that as you reap the harvest of what you have sown in Columbia High School, you will find an abundance which you can share with your fellow-man. May God bless you as you go out into the world. N James H. Rust Principal HARRY W. SMOKER Class of 1957: It is with a feeling of mixed emotions that I bid you farewell, On the one hand I am happy to see you achieve the goal for which you have worked for the past twelve years. On the other hand, I realize that the end of this term means the end of our association as partners in an educational experience. As I contemplate your entrance into business, pro- fessional, and higher academic fields, I feel impelled to remind you that success is still reserved for those who work diligently and honestly at a given task. I like to think that your experiences here at Columbia High School have, in some way, prepared you to meet successfully the many experiences that you will en- counter as you experience the day to day living with your fellow men. It has been a privilege, indeed, to have the oppor- tunity of working with you. May I wish you good fortune and much happiness as you confidently face whatever the future has in store for you. Sincerely, Harry W. Smoker, Principal

RAYMOND H. KOCH SuperinTenden'r's Message We are not unmindful that trying days and world shaking events are days of tremen- dous opportunities and serious responsibilities. In these days Columbia High School, along with other organizations of influence and power for good, assumes its responsibilities, and with eyes wide open and its face to the front, it aims to take its share and carry its load in the developing of the biggest, the noblest, and the best in its students, that they, in the midst of world misunderstanding, may be prepared to meet the opportunities and face the responsibilities with credit to themselves and to Columbia High School. You are the first class to graduate from the new Columbia High School. To you, there- fore, is given a challenge upon your graduation to build a tradition for your school. A tradition of service to your country and to your God is yours to build. Opportunities will come and go, but you will need to see them and to seize them if they are to be yours. Responsibilities you cannot evade, but how you meet them will determine your destiny. Life can be beautiful with meaning to the extent that you show your scars as a result of winning your battles with opportunity and responsibility in service- to humanity and in glorifying God. To this end Columbia High School has served you. You can build a life that will bring honor to your parents, your fellowmen, and Glory to God if you build upon a strong faith in God and the use of prayer, faith's medium of communion with God. Raymond H. Koch Superintendent 7
