PETERS Solicitor Member CHARLES B. FRIDY A. JOEL SATER Treasurer Member RUSSEL Y. KAUFFMAN HARRY P. SNYDER Vice-President President DR. JOHN G. MOUNTZ MARY N. VON STETTEN Member Secretary Message From The President To the class of 1957 falls the distinction of being the first class to graduate from the new Junior-Senior High School. Although their stay in the new structure has been rather short, I believe there will be memories that they will cherish for many years. We, your school directors, are endeavoring to furnish you with the best educational facilities that our community can afford. However, we can only furnish these facilitiesg so it depends on you, the student body,' to utilize them. We feel sure if both tlte educa- tional and physical facilities that the new school has to offer, are utilized to the utmost, then you have shown your appreciation to your community. Harry P. Snyder, President 6 RAYMOND H. KOCH SuperinTenden'r's Message We are not unmindful that trying days and world shaking events are days of tremen- dous opportunities and serious responsibilities. In these days Columbia High School, along with other organizations of influence and power for good, assumes its responsibilities, and with eyes wide open and its face to the front, it aims to take its share and carry its load in the developing of the biggest, the noblest, and the best in its students, that they, in the midst of world misunderstanding, may be prepared to meet the opportunities and face the responsibilities with credit to themselves and to Columbia High School. You are the first class to graduate from the new Columbia High School. To you, there- fore, is given a challenge upon your graduation to build a tradition for your school. A tradition of service to your country and to your God is yours to build. Opportunities will come and go, but you will need to see them and to seize them if they are to be yours. Responsibilities you cannot evade, but how you meet them will determine your destiny. Life can be beautiful with meaning to the extent that you show your scars as a result of winning your battles with opportunity and responsibility in service- to humanity and in glorifying God. To this end Columbia High School has served you. You can build a life that will bring honor to your parents, your fellowmen, and Glory to God if you build upon a strong faith in God and the use of prayer, faith's medium of communion with God. Raymond H. Koch Superintendent 7 Asst. Principal JAMES H. RUST Seniors: For twelve years you have looked forward to your graduation-to your commencement. For some of you it is the completion of your formal education. For others it is the stepping stone to higher learning. For all of you it is the beginning of your life's work. Columbia High School has endeavored to share with the home, the Church and the commrmity, the re- sponsibility of meeting the educational needs of the boys and girls of our school. We have tried to prepare you mentally, morally, physically, socially, and emotionally to face a complex and changing world and to be well equipped to serve mankind. I believe that as you reap the harvest of what you have sown in Columbia High School, you will find an abundance which you can share with your fellow-man. May God bless you as you go out into the world. N James H. Rust Principal HARRY W. SMOKER Class of 1957: It is with a feeling of mixed emotions that I bid you farewell, On the one hand I am happy to see you achieve the goal for which you have worked for the past twelve years. On the other hand, I realize that the end of this term means the end of our association as partners in an educational experience. As I contemplate your entrance into business, pro- fessional, and higher academic fields, I feel impelled to remind you that success is still reserved for those who work diligently and honestly at a given task. I like to think that your experiences here at Columbia High School have, in some way, prepared you to meet successfully the many experiences that you will en- counter as you experience the day to day living with your fellow men. It has been a privilege, indeed, to have the oppor- tunity of working with you. May I wish you good fortune and much happiness as you confidently face whatever the future has in store for you. Sheckart Advisor This year the Student Council has been divided into two separate councils-Junior High and Senior High. The Senior High is under the su- pervision of Mr. Sheckart, and the Junior High is under the advisorship of Mr. Sweger. Although these two Councils usually work together on various projects, 'the Junior High Council takes care of plans for the Junior High School gust as the Senior High Council supervises matters for the Senior High ouncil. The Student Councils act as the governing bodies of our school. Each homeroom and the larger organizations choose students to represent them on the Councils. Both Councils are subdivided into committees. The Finance Committees of both Councils planned the budget for 1957-58 and they also took charge of the candy sale, one of our biggest money-making projects. The Senior High Program Committee, along with the Junior High Program Committee, selected full length movies and the entertainment for our professional assemblies next year. The .duty of the Welcome Committees of the Councils is to welcome new students to C.H.S. The Ushering Committee of the Junior High Council is responsible for securing ushers for the Junior High activities just as the Senior High Ushering Committee has 'the duty .of getting ushers for the Senior High events. The Student Welfare Committee of the Senior High Council placed hall monitors throughout the school along with providing people to check the lavs just as the Lav. Throughout the year, the Press Club mem- bers devoted their time to preparing the publication for distribution. The task the organization undertook was indeed diiiicult and trying. Among the duties of the Press Club were selecting an engraver, printer, photographer, selling advertisements and seeing that all pictures for the yearbook were taken. It seemed our work would never end. Under the guidance of our advisor, Mr. Kline, the members strove to produce a book in which attention is given 'to those items which we thought Lloyd W. Kline would be of greatest interest to the whole student body. We sincerely Advisor hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed preparing it. This year's annual play, 'tLittle Women, was well received on each of the three nights it was presented, November 15, 16 and 17, 1956. The play was based on the well-known novel Little Women by Lou- isa May Alcott. Members of the Dramatic Club who did not participate in the play served on the following committees: Property-Stage, Ushering, Publicity, and House and Make-up. Also this year the senior members of the Dramatic Club felt as though they wanted to extend their acting ability, so they presented a one-act play in an assembly held in the Spring. The other members of the organization put on the one-act play which is held each year for the student body and faculty. Hats off to this group for doing their job well. This, however, does not tell the entire story. The squad was hit hard by graduation at the close of last year but they seemed to have the inexperience conquered as the opening of the season came around. Then the injuries set in and Coach Donan and his assistants, along with their willing replacements, worked hard to patch up the holes, but they were too numerous. Nevertheless, those who witnessed our football contests saw some interesting duels, in which a few breaks may have changed the outcome. Again, the squad lost many seniors, but with a few replacements in the right places, next year's team might support a bright future. This year's squad extended the tradition for the 56-57 season. Again, Coach Kreiser and his talented boys captured a title. It was the Lancaster County Section One Championship, which they easily ac- quired with a thirteen and one record. However, after the regular season the games were not so easy to win. The first post-season game the Saints played was with Warwick for the County Championship, in which Warwick was victorious. Neverthe- less, the boys were not finished yet. They came back in the P. I. A. A. Dis- trict 3 Play-offs to triumph over Susquehanna Township before bowing to Palmyra in the semi-finals. For the first time in our school history, our team participated in a Christmas Holiday Tournament held at Harrisburg, and emerged with the third place trophy. The Junior Varsity, under the ,direction of Coach Marcello, also captured their section one title. The outlook for next season is bright. With five of the first ten boys returning and the graduates of a strong J.V. team, the C.H.S. basketball edition for 57-58 should be a mighty one. Hondras Coach Wrestling, as a sport in Columbia High School, is still picking up in- terest. The fans are becoming more familiar with its proceedings and are Ending the meets both interesting and exciting. Those, who have familiar- ized themselves with the high school type of wrestling, have become ar- dent fans and are always among the increasing number of fans who view the meets. Coach Hondras and his squad completed the season with a six and five record, including heartbreaking defeats of one and two points. Although the squad was good collectively, there were three individual stand-outs. John Thomas went through the regular eleven meets unde- feated in the 154 pound class. Junior Don Bell, at 103, captured the Sec- tional and District Titles for the second consecutive year. 185 pounder Jim Smith won the Sectional, District and South-Eastern Pennsylvania Regional crown. The other boys on the squad also found time after their own practice to tutor junior high wrestling enthusiasts, creating a bright picture in the future for wrestling at Columbia High School. This group of athletes completed the fourth consecutive undefeated season in dual meets. They finished second in three invitational meets and also captured the number two position in the P.I.A.A. District III Finals. Coach Pew and these boys have done a really fine job in keeping the name of Columbia High School near the top in the field of track. Next year's outlook is bright with only a few men not returning. On the shoulder of the returnees and the few ever-ready replacements, Coach Pew and Columbia High School should be able to place the hopes for an- other successful track season. George R. Pew . Kohl Coach The baseball team of 1956 was the most successful since this sport was adopted by C.H.S. These boys overcame their inexperience and ended the regular season in first of section one with eight wins against three defeats. With this record they obtained for their school the first trophy it has re- ceived in baseball. They continued on to further glory by defeating Man- heim Township, the section two champions, before losing to Solanco in extra innings in the county championship game. The boys under the leader- ship of Coach Kohl displaye.d great teamwork in forming their winning combination. The Glenn Banner Award, which is given to the most outstanding player and decided upon by the vote of the team members, was presented to Walter Price. The shoes of the four graduates, Earl Shive, Walt Price, Frank Hardy, and Jack Montgomery, will be hard to fill, but this year's squad should be able to make these adjustments and under the direction of Coach Kohl produce a bountiful season.
