NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Two years ago, Columbia High added to its many clubs a very fine organization. Our Honor Society, which is a member of the National Honor Society, is very young, but it has already been recognized as an important part of the school. In order to become a member of this organiza- tion, one must have an average of 85 per cent. Character, leadership, and service are also taken into consideration. The members of the faculty choose those students whom they consider worthy to receive this honor. Members take an oath in which they promise to uphold the ideals of this society. This organization should be a goal for all am- bitious underclassmen, because it is a club of all around good citizens. f . xi E xiii: , U ' U x.-2: Q 37 .5 ,, 3 V , ff x N14 fl F'-:Q iikft,.4i,L:hbLW 41,1 ' n 4 . : Q, . The Y-Teens are in session. The annual Recognition Service : planning of dances: decorations for these dances: choco- lates to be sent abroad: Christmas boxesg-these are only a part of the activities in which the Y- Teens participate. The vitality of the girls, both Senior and junior, is well brought out when a dance is in planning. Since most of the high school stu- dents in grades eight to twelve enjoy the high school dances, the Y-Teens decided to make it more enjoyable by having a jukebox installed in the gymnasium. After busily making decorations and seeing that they are properly put in place, the members of the Y-Teens and their escorts are rewarded with the dreamy dancing to Lem Stebbin's band. Several assembly programs are presented during the year. The most elabo- rate of these is the religious program presented to the public during the Christmas season. In the spring, both of the clubs planned and pre- sented a variety show open to the public. The proceeds were divided and put into the class treasuries. Besides taking part in the County Music Festival and the Southern District Chorus Festival, there is a possibility for representation in the State Festival. The work of these clubs is enjoyed and appreciated by the entire Co- lumbia High School student body. MEMBERS OF BOYS' GLEE CLUB Chester Arter. Harry Barninger. John Billet. Ralph Bongart. Each year, girls are selected from the Fresh- man and Sophomore classes to become members of the Chorus. These girls are trained exten- sively for two years, and then. at the end of their Sophomore year, they are selected for the Glee Club. Many entertaining assemblies are given by the members of the Chorus, and this year they played an important part in the Christmas program. These girls practice all during the winter months, once a week. Then, in the spring of each year they present a most enjoyable musical program. Under the splendid leadership of Miss Min- nich, this organization has continued, over the years, to make our stay at Columbia High more enjoyable. Each year the club paints the scenery for the Dramatic Club, in addition to making posters to advertise the play. Although the pictures made by the members of the organization are displayed in the art room throughout the year, an exhibition of all the works is usually held in the Spring. Here prizes are awarded for the best paintings. The Splash 'n Splatter Club also holds outside activities for its members. Well, it is a carpenter, prob- ably one of the best carpenters in the school. These pupils who make a lot of noise accomplish many things and usually don't get the credit they deserve. They, the members of the Crafts- men's Club, do a lot of odd jobs in and around the school. They build Dramatic Club scenery and festival concession stands, repair auditorium seats and bleachers, and also this year installed shelves in the music room. They elect a fore- man, who this year was john Yohe, and an as- sistant foreman. At the end of the Senior year gold pins are presented to the Seniors. Donned in their colorful crimson and gold uniforms, the cheerleaders were always on their toes to choose the yells appropriate for every situation. Because of the organized cheering that the squad conducted at basketball games, this sport, too, became more stirring. Planning of pep meetings, their presentations, new cheers and motions, and tryouts for the coming term's squad were the activities which occupied much of the girls' timeg but never do they begrudge it. In the 1952-53 school term, several new and lively cheers were set to mo- tions which were received with enthusiasm by the students and teams. This term has had one of the most capable and commendable squads ever produced by C. H. S. WEYANT 48 TWIRLER Everytime the band performs at a gala event, these people who make up the band front can be seen twirling, strutting, and leading the musi- cians through their paces. Without out faithful performers much of the color and glamour would be lost from football games, rallies, and parades. In order to achieve this honored position, one must first learn the fundamentals of twirlingg then practice, constantly. The big moment for all hopeful candidates comes when try-outs are held. It is certain that the lucky persons who are chosen, are thrilled to become a drum-major or majorette. The excitement of strutting to the martial music, of wearing snappy uniforms, and of being an essential part of the football games . . . all these things add up to make this activity one of the most desired at Columbia High School. In order to be eli- gible for membership, one must have earned his letter in either football, basketball, baseball, or track. After this is accomplished, he must go through a period of initiation, which lasts a week. During the first part of this initiation, each mem- ber-to-be is ridiculed by his classmates, since he must wear an oversize bow tie, different kinds of socks and shoes, and rolled up blue jeans. Added to this, if these poor probationers vio- late any of these rules, they must carry a basket full of bricks. Perhaps the latter half of the week is even more painful to some of the fellows. They must dress in their best bib and tucker and receive more taunts from fellow students. But, the reward comes, when the Varsity C Club's assembly is held. At this time a letter is given to each boy who has worked for it. This is something to be proud of. You can be sure membership in this organization is well-earned. One of the main jobs of this group is the handling of football programs. These programs benefit the spectators, and the proceeds help to pay for the sweaters which the boys wear to dis- play their letters. The boys are willing to help the school, when- ever they are needed. This club is surely an asset to our Alma Mater. Advisor - MR. COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL 1952 The Crimson Tide ended a most successful season by winning seven games and dropping only three. Only one of these losses was in Conference of the Roses competition, but this one game was enough to put the Tide in second place in the Conference. Even though the Tide lost three games. many were inclined to believe that this team was the finest team in the county. Much of the team's success must be credited to Coach Donan and his able assistants, Coaches Kreiser and Hondras. Without their constant help and encouragement the Tide could not have rolled on to seven victories. COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY Our junior Varsity made an outstanding showing this year by turning back all their opponents. With a team such as this. This year's Varsity Basketball Team, which produced the best record for Co- lumbia High in the past four years. was well drilled. with an excellent defense and a well-polished offense. What the team lacked in height, they made up for in aggressiveness and willingness to win. They stressed the philosophy of team- work. which was the factor that led them to a record of 13 wins and 3 losses. Part of their success was due to the capable leadership of Coach Kreiser. Al- though this was his hrst year as basketball coach. he produced a team that has beaten many past records. This will be a year to remember since it isn't every season that the Crimson Tide can down Lancaster Catholic in both games. Also. who will ever forget the exciting over-time period in the Manor game! The Junior Varsity is also to be commended for their successful season which came to a close with 13 wins and 3 losses. As only one loss occurred in league competition. they easily carried away the first place honor.
