DE ll tt. OE ey ere ee a ere anes ie Dedication Spring Activ Seniors 7-Nolaalialiaceitiolal (OY cerolaly eni(olals Sports Activities Underclassmen Advertisements Quiet, unassuming, friendly, kind, caring, hard working, conscientious — that’s Mrs. Janie Owens. The students at C.H.S. love and admire her for her unfailing de- votion to their needs and for her example of the true values of life. She has taught English in Tyrrell County Schools about thirty years, and during that time has constantly demonstrated her interest in the youth of Tyrrell County. The Columbian staff is proud to dedicate this ‘78 edition of the Columbian to Mrs. Owens. Our love and appreciation to you! As seniors approach graduation, their thoughts are not only of the future but also of the past. Their memories turn back to the day when these twelve years of school began for them. The road ahead then seemed long, but now, much too soon, those years are a part of yesterday. Nostalgic thoughts turn back to all the people and events that have touched their lives in the past and have helped shape their present. They know now that all those yesterdays have lighted the way to the present, and their gratitude for the lessons of yesterday becomes warm and real. tare ae en IE RD PPR eer ame eter, Christmas At CHS 12 Darryl Liverman — M.V.P. Liverman. 48 Carnell Bernette Basnight, born July 10, 1960, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rayfield Jackson Basnight. On August 6, 1977, two members of the class of 1978 lost their lives while swimming at Northwest Forks near Gum Neck. Bernard and Bernette are badly mis- sed in the halls, in classes , in clubs, and on the foot- ball field of Columbia High School. Everybody — the students, faculty, administration — will long cherish the memory of two young men whose warm smiles and outgoing personalities had been familiar sights in the halls of C.H.S. for six years. Both young men were very active in school activities. Both were members of Deca, Vica, and the Monogram Club. They both played football; Bernette, as fullback; Bernard, as tailback. In addition Bernette sang in the concert chorus. Ber- nard served on the Usher Board of the Mount Pleas- ant Missionary Baptist church. The class of ‘78 misses Bernette and Bernard and extends sincere sympathy to their families. ( 2 Y, Le Life is like a game people play, Living their lives from day to day, Meeting new people, Remembering old friends, Thinking of good times enjoyed back then, Discovering their future, Looking back on their past, Never really knowing how long life will last. Cooperation, spirit, and friendly rivalry were apparent on the campus as preparation continued throughout the week. Because of their most colorfully decorated room, Mrs. Davis's 8th graders were declared winners of the homeroom competi- tion. These students were rewarded with the opportunity to ride on the Monogram float in the Saturday afternoon parade. The FBLA, FHA, and SCA floats were judged first, second, and third place winners respectively. Homecoming activities culminated in the crowning of Co- queens, Brenda Respass and Candy Rhodes, at the Saturday night football game which ended with a 12-0 victory for the Wildcats. 113 114 It has been said that, ‘’The future belongs to those who prepare for it.”” At C.H.S. that preparation takes many forms. In English classes, students learn to communicate with their teacher, with one another, with the world around them. They delve into the literature, past and present, of many countries. In Social Studies classes, students learn about the past, about their heritage. Their teachers hope this knowledge of the past will help prepare them for the future. In Science classes, students, through experimentation, learn about the world around them and how it affects their future. In Math classes, students learn all those practical uses of numbers that will always be a part of their lives. In French classes, students span the gulf between two countries with widely-different cultures and languages. dl DRIVER EDUCAT, TYRRELL COUNTY ScxD mn In the Vocational Department, students are introduced to a variety of possible careers for their future. They learn to type, to keep books, to operate office machines, to cook, to sew, to work on cars, to build, to grow plants, to weld, and they get on-the-job training through their Distributive Education classes. In the Physical Education Department, students learn to drive safely, and to build healthy bodies. In the Cultural Arts Department, music and art offer possible careers to students as well as activities to fill their leisure hours. In addition to classes, clubs, such as Future Homemakers, Future Farmers, and Future Business Leaders, deepen the student's involve- ment in preparation for the future. As Patrick Henry said; “| have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experi- ence. | know of no way of judging the future but by the past.” Lenner Basnight, President; Darlene Etheridge, Vice-President; Aldora Basnight, Secretary; Geneva j Melton, Historian; Rhonda Alexander, Recreation Leader; y Sandra McClees, Parliamentarian; Debbie Sawyer, Treasurer; Kim Voliva, Reporter; Elva Keiser, Sponsor. Some county activities result from laws requiring a courthouse, sheriff, schools, register of deeds, welfare, etc. But most county services are provided because the citizens want them. These include agricultural extension, solid waste collection, recreation, rural water distribution, planning, civil preparedness, mental health, libraries, senior citizens’ nutrition, hospital, office space for federal and state agencies, ambulances, fire fighting, forest fire control, veterans’ assistance, community development, crime prevention, and others. The county budget this year totals more then $2.2 million, of which about 21% comes from local property taxes. The remaining $1.7 million is received through revenue sharing, community de- velopment grant, federal and state participation in schools and social services, ABC store profits, federal employment grants, and several other sources. Every citizen should consider it a duty to keep informed on county activities and plans and to offer suggestions to county officials, because county business is your business.
