1966 COLUMBIAN e: Published by the Senior Class Columbia High School Columbia, North Carolina Mr. and Miss Columbian Allen Brickhouse Being named MR, COLUMBIAN is not an award bestowed upon all. Although all cannot share in the honor itself, all share in the happiness and pride they feel for those who are so honored. Chosen by the faculty as the senior boy who best personifies the ideals of Columbia High School was ALLEN BRICKHOUSE, MR. COLUMBIAN. Carol McClees Continuing honor and notoriety come to but a small percentage of a school's population. One so honored, CAROL McCLEES, MISS COLUMBIAN, was chosen by the faculty for her cooperation, dependability, industriousness, initiative, and citizenship. All at CHS share in the joy and happi- ness of this distinct honor. Dedicated to Mr. F.. A. Davenport There is one who has taught us. There is one who has prodded us to strive for higher goals. There is one who has gently quided us toward a brighter pathway when the direction in which we were travel- ing seemed dismal and bleak. There is one who has been a friend when we have particularly needed a friend. There is one who has treated us as individuals. There is one who has shared the pleasures and problems of our senior year. Therefore, in appreciation of all of these, we dedicate the 1966 COLUMBIAN to this teacher, guidance counselor, and friend, Mr. Fred A. Davenport. Working for a Better School The members of the staff at Columbia High School have expertly fulfilled their tasks, Our health nurse has been our assurance of excellent care incase ofaccidents, She has greatly assisted the student body in receiving needed optical and dental care. Our bus drivers maintain a very important position on the staff of CHS. About ninety per cent of the stu- dents depend on them for a means of transportation to and from school. We are indeed grateful for their good, courteous, reliable driving techniques. When lunch time has arrived, the students have quickly formed a long line leading into the cafeteria where we knew we would be served delicious, nourishing meals by our lunchroom staff. The custodians of CHS have kept our school facilities clean and sanitary. During our twelve years of school, we have become one big family. Now this big family will, in a sense, be de- stroyed as we each go our separate ways, but many of the friendships that have grown during these years will never die. However, as we have reached an important mile- stone in our lives, we must move on to greater effort and larger responsibilities. Beyond the doors of our school lie opportunity, suc- cess—and, perhaps, failure. We know that the days ahead will not always be sunny, but our hopes are high because of the confidence we have gained through our years of preparation at CHS. Our years in the primary and elementary grades were important, because our educational foundation was being laid. We had good teachers; we learned much; and there were many, many happy days. We entered high school with Mrs, Mary Ann Combs and Mr. Adrian Ayers as our homeroom teachers. The looks from the upperclassmen, the rushing from class to class, and the new schedule are all a part of our mem- ories of our first year in high school. In our sophomore year, our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Madge Van Horn and Mr. John Griffin. By now we were accustomed to high school life. We had a good year and were increasing in knowledge. As Juniors, our homeroom teacher again was Mrs. Van Horn. We worked harder in our studies, and we were enjoying the role of upperclassmen. The class conducted a magazine campaign, which was profitable and lots of fun. One of the highlights of the year was our Junior- Senior Prom, which carried out the theme Stairway to Dreamland. It was a very happy occasion. Another pleasant event was the arrival of our class rings. Finally the long-awaited year came. We were Seniors. Our homeroom teacher was Mr. Fred Davenport, who helped us with the 1966 COLUMBIAN and our plans for graduation. We looked forward to a good year in our studies, the many social activities, and finally to our graduation in June, 1966. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to parents and teachers for their guidance and support during our years at Columbia High School. Class Testators: Frieda Voliva Allen Brickhouse MICHAEL ETHERIDGE I wish I could sit like that! CAROL McCLEES MILTON KIDD LLOYD JOHNSON Prophecy As we check the place cards and seating arrange- ments, we are carried back into the past. No one would have ever dared to suggest that the world would be so changed in just ten years. Why, when we were planning to have a class reunion during this year of 1976, no one ever dreamed of the satellite night club, The Tornado, much less that the setting for our reunion would be just that, But as we, Fleedie Cahoon and Joyce Rhodes, check the final details in the decorations and program, we can't help but reminisce about our days at Columbia School, the little town of Columbia, and our old class- mates who we will be seeing in just a short time now, As we check our seating list, Allen Brickhouse is the name that we see first. Oh, yes, he succeeded in be- coming a school teacher! Imagine Allen being the only male at the fashionable girls' school, Rockette Hall! Another one of our classmates who has become a fashion designer, Loretta Midgett, has received much publicity recently, Her latest creation, ''Doo-Drop-Inn has caused a complete revolution in the fashion world. Her star model, Diane Armstrong, plans to model this fabulous dress for her classmates tonight at the reunion, Marsha Brickhouse is next on our list. She was selected as the wittiest girl in our class, and portions of her wit have been carried over into her work as a soci- ologist. Marsha's latest client asked her to recommend a romantic replacement for the moon in the life of young lovers. Any ideas about the moon as a symbol of romance are now considered old fashioned! Marsha is not the only one who is confronted with such 'enormous!! problems! Frieda Voliva, all dressed in white from head to toe, finally became a registered nurse. She has learned all the remedies for the cure of many illnesses, but she hasn't quite mastered the remedy for a broken heart! That doctor in the little white coat just can't seem to find the time to teach her, Sandra Brickhouse, the owner of 'The Tomado ' said that we would be surprised at the number of people who are over-powered by the atmosphere at the night club. Actually, instead of the atmosphere it's probably the rich food. Wanda Brickhouse, 'The Tornado's!' chief cook, strongly believes in garnishing her dishes with a liberal sprinkling of stardust or a few sprigs of moongloo! Poor Leamon Cooper is on a very strict diet and won't be able to enjoy many of the famous dishes that The Tornado offers, That's Tight, he must watch his weight! After all, he's the world champion heavyweight boxer. It did take everyone a little! by surprise when Clay was downed within a minute during the fight in which Leamon gained his title, Robert Deaver is Leamon!s manager. It seems that Leamon is always getting him- self in a jam and it takes Robert's fast talking to get him out. Another of Leamon's close associates is Gene Cooper, Gene hangs around the big pool halls collecting the latest tidbits of information about Leamon's opponents, Another of our classmates has gained wide recogni- tion as an actor, Michael Ethridge has become another Richard Burton. His own Liz is none other than another classmate, Carol McClees. The Beatles are now a thing of the past. It seems that Dallas Simmons, Wayne Smith, Eddie Spencer, and Lawrence Swain have captured the hearts of all the young girls with their latest recording, Come Along to Pluto and Play Eskimo With Me. Evidently Eddie still likes ice cubes! Without a doubt, Cindy Simmons, the hairstylist, is chilled when she hears our singing stars! newest song, But, another classmate, Sarah Spencer has advised Cindy not to cry. However, Laura Taylor seems to think that the place to melt the ice is at the home of a Justice of the Peace. Milton Kidd always was silent whenever anyone wanted him to speak during our school days. Well, now he's living like a hermit; however, he's making good use of his time. He has written a best-seller, Another Look at Whitman and Thoreau. As we continue down the list to Willene Cuthrell's name, our thoughts are channeled in another direction, Willene is now secretary to the owner of Greater Land and Timber Company. Lloyd Johnson, the Owner, spends most of his time in South America making sure that Larry Comstock, his foreman does the job right, One of Lloyd's old lovers, Gwen Armstrong, doesn't care for this set-up at all. It seems that she thinks that it's time that Lloyd became a little more domestically inclined, The Congress of the United States is still dazed by the warm personality of one of the new North Carolina Senators, Nancy Owens, Nancy always was a favorite with the Class of '66. Our senior adviser, Mr. Fred Davenport, and our mascots, Lelia Davenport and David Smith will also attend the reunion, Mr. Davenport is still advising the seniors at CHS, Lelia and David are now freshmen, Listen! A rocket is approaching the night club. Wonder who is piloting it? Just look at those bars and stars’ painted on the nose cone! Ricky Swain must be the pilot, because no one else in our class could possibly still find time to feud with our ancestors! As we rush out to welcome our classmates as they descend from the rocket, we put our memories aside until another time, Class Prophetesses: Joyce Rhodes Fleedie Cahoon Te ee ee : : : 4 - ! i) —- eis ‘Class of 1966 Kvn.
