Class History On a bright sunny day in August 1945 we began our first day of school life. Miss Mary Weeks and Mrs. Camille Everton were there to welcome us. After we got over our shyness, we began to learn to print our names, and say our ABC ' s. After a few month ' s vacation we were back at school in the second grade, where we were wel¬ comed by Mrs.Dorothy Combs and Mrs. Ja n e Po I I a rd. There we learned to read and write The other SIX years in grammar school were a lot of fun. Our teachers were Mrs. Helen Melson, Miss Martha Sykes, Miss R ose Bateman, Miss Hettie Jones, Mrs. Mary Walker, Mrs. Florence Chaplin and N en we were in the eighth grade we had three teachers. Miss Jessie Flythe, Mr. Norman Knight, and Mr. Lawrence Green. Then came our Freshman year with Mr. PaulPowellas home-room teacher. We were so excited and mixed up that we didn ' t know which class and room we were supposed to be in. Everytime we started for another class we were running into everybody, Afteraweekor two we finally got straight¬ ened out. The most exciting activity of our Sophomore year was ordering our class rings which were to be delivered the following year. We enjoyed having Mr. Ernest Sutton as our homeroom teacher this year. We were all looking forwardto our Junior year. AgainMr. Ernest Sutton we I corned us. Gordon Basnight and Grace Cartwright joined us thatyear. We enjoyed presenting our Junior Play entitled Father Goes Domestic. Then at Christmas our Mascots, Dejuan Cooper and Jay McClees, gave us a party which was enjoyed by everyone. The proceeds from the play and from selling drinks and candy at ba I I games were used to fin¬ ance our trip to Washington, D.C. It was an excited group of boys and girls who left Columbia on Thursday, April 25th for our long-awaited trip. We had adelightful trip, but were happy to return home on Sunday nighf. The following fall we entered our Senior year which we all were looking forward to. Mrs. Madge Vanhorn welcomed us. We gained two new students, Jayne Sawyer and David Hans ley, both of whom we lost during the year. We almost immediately started to work on our annual, a project that consumed a lot of time but which we enjoyed. We especially enjoyed the day we spent out of town selling ads and were quite pleased with the results. The Monogram Club decided to present a Homecoming, the first for Columbia High. The King and Queen were elected from the Senior Class, the n o m i n e e s being Yvonne Brickhouse, Judy McDuffie, Lexine Owens and Marietta Swain for queen, and Gordon Basnight, David Hansley, Alfred Davenport and Hubert Spencer for king. They all rode on the Senior Float and at the ball game withWeeksvilie, Lexine Owens and Alfred Davenport were an¬ nounced as winners, having been elected by secret ballot. We were quite excited the day that we selected invitations, caps and gowns, and diplomas. Now we are all working hard and looking forward to the day when we can mail our invitations, wear our caps and gowns, and receive our diplomas. MARIETTA SWAIN Historian
