Class Poem Try not the pass! the old man said; Dark lowers the tempest overhead. The roaring torrent is deep and wide! ' And loud that clarion voice replied. Excelsior! -HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW Class History On a bright sunny day in August 1945 we began our first day of school life. Miss Mary Weeks and Mrs. Camille Everton were there to welcome us. After we got over our shyness, we began to learn to print our names, and say our ABC ' s. After a few month ' s vacation we were back at school in the second grade, where we were wel¬ comed by Mrs.Dorothy Combs and Mrs. Ja n e Po I I a rd. There we learned to read and write The other SIX years in grammar school were a lot of fun. Our teachers were Mrs. Helen Melson, Miss Martha Sykes, Miss R ose Bateman, Miss Hettie Jones, Mrs. Mary Walker, Mrs. Florence Chaplin and N en we were in the eighth grade we had three teachers. Miss Jessie Flythe, Mr. Norman Knight, and Mr. Lawrence Green. Then came our Freshman year with Mr. PaulPowellas home-room teacher. We were so excited and mixed up that we didn ' t know which class and room we were supposed to be in. Everytime we started for another class we were running into everybody, Afteraweekor two we finally got straight¬ ened out. The most exciting activity of our Sophomore year was ordering our class rings which were to be delivered the following year. We enjoyed having Mr. Ernest Sutton as our homeroom teacher this year. We were all looking forwardto our Junior year. AgainMr. Ernest Sutton we I corned us. Gordon Basnight and Grace Cartwright joined us thatyear. We enjoyed presenting our Junior Play entitled Father Goes Domestic. Then at Christmas our Mascots, Dejuan Cooper and Jay McClees, gave us a party which was enjoyed by everyone. The proceeds from the play and from selling drinks and candy at ba I I games were used to fin¬ ance our trip to Washington, D.C. It was an excited group of boys and girls who left Columbia on Thursday, April 25th for our long-awaited trip. We had adelightful trip, but were happy to return home on Sunday nighf. The following fall we entered our Senior year which we all were looking forward to. Mrs. Madge Vanhorn welcomed us. We gained two new students, Jayne Sawyer and David Hans ley, both of whom we lost during the year. We almost immediately started to work on our annual, a project that consumed a lot of time but which we enjoyed. We especially enjoyed the day we spent out of town selling ads and were quite pleased with the results. The Monogram Club decided to present a Homecoming, the first for Columbia High. The King and Queen were elected from the Senior Class, the n o m i n e e s being Yvonne Brickhouse, Judy McDuffie, Lexine Owens and Marietta Swain for queen, and Gordon Basnight, David Hansley, Alfred Davenport and Hubert Spencer for king. They all rode on the Senior Float and at the ball game withWeeksvilie, Lexine Owens and Alfred Davenport were an¬ nounced as winners, having been elected by secret ballot. We were quite excited the day that we selected invitations, caps and gowns, and diplomas. Now we are all working hard and looking forward to the day when we can mail our invitations, wear our caps and gowns, and receive our diplomas. MARIETTA SWAIN Historian Class Prophecy It is now the year 1967. The world is indeed in a turmoil. The U.S. has been threotened with an invasion, and the President has been in conference for three days with grave, dignified Grace Cartwright, Secretary of The invasion is being threatened by Michael Griffin, former.Secretary of Treasury, who skipped the country with every cent the U.S. had. The Rock-n-Roll craze has again hit the country, and teenagers ore going wi Id over Thomos Morris, the Elvis Presley of the day. Opera, too, hos the country in a spin. Bobby Smith made history when he brought down the Metropolitan Opera House, by singing HOUND DOG in A sharp. The hottest comedienne of all times has hit New York like an Atom Bomb. Nancy Swain, who experts say is better than Berle, has audiences rolling the aisle. Her agent and right hand man is none other than Hubert Spencer. Lexihe Owens is known far and wide for her kind heart and generosity. She owns and manages The River Neck Home for Stray Cats and Dogs. The record for speed hashit an all-time high by the greatest racer ofall times, that world-famous Daredevil. Gordon Basnight. The tall, slim, redhead, leaning on the fence is Joyce Marie Hassell, his top-notch mechanic. Doris and Nan Brickhouse have opened a modest Tea Shoppe in downtown Gum Neck after striking oil on Sound Side. Phyllis Davis is working hard on her farm at Alligotor. In a few more years, she hopes to be able to sell her mules, and buy a tractor. It ' s rumored thatshe and her business manager, Jimmy Swain, are fightingall the time. Jane Selby and Judy McDuffie have put up a Drive-In Movie at Little Florido and are really raking in the dough. There ' s no extra charge if you want to go s w i mm i ng between movies. Sterling Spruill is President of the Sofe Drivers ' Association, and Michael Swain is his Assistant. Lawrence Brickhouse isa moviestar. He has been proclaimed the greatestscreen loyersince Rudolph Valentino. C. J. Livermon is a famous psychiatrist, and Buddy Brickhouse was hisfirstpatient. Buddy suffered o nervous breakdown when he discovered that there were people living outside Gum Neck. At Madison Square Garden, Ellis and Henry Cohoon are preparing to battle for the title. Between fights, Ellis models Bermuda Shorts for Macys ' , and Henry works as a Ballet Instructor. Lorry Brickhouse became famous by being the first man to go over Nicagara Fa I Is in a cardboard box. When lost seen, he was trying to swim bock up, using a slightly hurried Australian Crawl. Sam S. Woodley has just returned from Mars. Scientists finally decided that life did exist there and sent Sam to investigate unfortunately. There were a few humans strolling quite happily about, but after three hours of Sam ' s Hello Martion speech, they packed their belongings ond caught the first meteor over to Jupiter. Morietta Swain is doing quite well for herself these days. She isa Junior Partnerin Columbia ' s Used Car Lot. She is responsible for their newmotto, Don ' t drive an old wreck—buy a new one from us. At Washington, the Redskins are having their greatest season. The coachsays that it ' s all due to the work of Crazy Legs, formerly known as Alfred Davenport. He ' s the fastest water boy they ' ve ever had. Oh, yes, have any of you seen J. E. Roughton lately? J. E. became quite famous when he discovered what went on behind the green door. In his spare time, he tests new jet planes for the Air Force. Yvonne Brickhouse is just settling down to life again, after winning the Mrs. Americo contest. That young man following her around, obviously her husband, looks familiar, but 1 can ' t quite place him. Geraldine Moran is Assistant Principal of ol ' CHS. In memory of the 1957 Senior boys, she operates a Pool Hall during lunch time. Peggy Davis Iws just returned from Australia, where she captured first place in the weight-lifting contest, during the great Olympics.
