“CLASS PROPHECY Well at last I ' ve worked my way up those curving stairs to this vacant table on the mezzanine. I declare I ' ve never seen so ma ny peo ple at one time in my life here at the Van Horne Estate; of course, there are alwavs Plenty of guests here, for since Maurice struck oil out in front of the store, Madge has really been liv¬ ing in sofe But tonight’s the social event of the year; Mrs. Van Home has invited the graduating class of 1955 up to her mansion to a soiree with all the trimmings and everything. From here on the mezzanine I can see everything that happens down on the ballroom floor and watch the guests as they come in through that Now ' who ' s that? Ah! Now 1 recognize her. That’s Carolyn Swain entering. Boy,check that ivory| white ermine she’s wearing. But I guess she can afford it; she wed a Texas cattle rancher back in 59, and she s been living in her penthouse in New York having the time of her life. I saw her picture in the paper the other day. It showed her and her inseparable companion, Loretta Roughton, who is another big social figure, as they entered Place de l’Opera in Paris. Ruby Perry was making her debut there at the tune. I hear Ruby has really drawn the crowds since she’s started singing Shake, Rattle and Roll in D Flat Minor . There ' s a really remarkable person coming in now. That doesn t look like Syble Smith at all, since she bleached her hair. She’s trying to swim the English Channel now. They say shegotwithmamileoftheFrench Coast, found out she couldn’t make it, so she turned around and swam back. , . . Collon Snell has just entered and is now standing on the dance floor surrounded by a flock of admirers. Since he became a dance instructor, he’s really won fame and renown. He ' s created a new swing called the Pea Ridge Boogie, and if you think that old version of the Dirty Boogie was bad, you should see this! There’s Glenn Woodley with his checkbook. He’s Secretary of the Treasury and workmg hard for the Presidency His motto is Get rid of that excess bullion at Fort Knox. He’s giving a check to Ada Stevenson now She needs it if anybody does. She can ' t feed those sixteen kids of hers on that little salary Billy makes as Rector of the Alligator Shout Hallelujah Church. How’d they do it? Well, there are three sets of twins; and two sets of quintuplets. Of course, they have these on display every morning between six and eight o’clock, admission $2.50. , , . Here comes Matilda Furlough. But where’s Billy? I ' ll bet he ' s home drawing campaign posters tor his dear wife. Tidgie is running for Mrs. America. She ' s wooing the judges by putting their pictures on her posters. You might be interested to know that one of the judges is Mr. Tex Lindsey. Remember him from those good ole ' days at C. H. S.? ... Bobby Pinner is sitting down there in the corner at the desk with a cocktail (or is it a Pabst) in one hand and an encyclopedia in the other. He’s writing a book on the ancient species of human beings that used to inhabit Gum Neck. At a news conference the other day he said, As those Critters that live down there in those forsaken jungles have always interested me, it is my great ambition to write a book on them. All profit will be used in constructing a new pipeline down there, as 1 wouldn ' t want those people to die due to the lack of sunshine. Dora Dean Owens is coming in now, feeling her way along the wall. Still sleepy as usual! She ' s secretary for John Robert Fleming who’s a Real Estate Agent in Creswell. He says she sleeps on the job 3 4 of the time though. The other day she sent one of her mushy love letters to a firm in Chicago and a 25,000 dollar check to her boy friend in Edenton. I ' m not too sure she was asleep when she pulled that one! Annette Spencer, who is sitting down there on the sofa, was General A. J. Spencer until recently when she tried to hike her men from New York to San Francisco. They thought her tactics were so cruel that they were going to send her to the guillotine. But since she loved the goo and slosh of blood and war so much they sentenced her to the Chicago Slaughter House for ten years instead. Here comes Walter Davenport with one of his pet retrievers. Walter owns a hunting lodge in Frying Pan. He is breeding a special kind of hound dog that is supposed to chase bunnies (jungle-bunnies that is) in and out of season. Charles Swain is standing down there under the arch now, showing offhis muscles. He ' s a professional boxer. He plans to contest the World Heavyweight title next month. Some say he has a left like old timer, Marciano. He has named his punching bag Glenn . I wonder why! Here come Nina and Ollie; they ' re still in Gum Neck. They do a dance number every evening at eight in the ball room of the Gum Neck Casino , the Monte Carlo of America. After their act they help Proprietor Max Liverman at the bar. Ou-la-la! There comes Shirley Copeland. She ' s modeling riviera bathing wear called Le Plus Moins , the successor of the out-dated bakini in Paris these days. These little numbers can, when folded neatly, be put in a match box and still have room for a day ' s supply of matches. Maxine Simmons is on the floor now. She ' s writing for True Confessions magazine. Her last smash hit was Baked Beans For Breakfast . She ' s living in San Francisco with her husband who is a chef. Now there is the only movie star I ' ve ever seen. Margaret Roughton won an Oscar last year for her per¬ formance in Romeo and Juliet . That all-time lover, Jackie Davis, co-starred, and together they gave a performance unsurpassed in many years. Audrey Spruill is working for Barnum Bailey ' s Circus now as a lion trainer. She broke the backbones of two of her reluctant animals who refused to climb a twenty-foot ladder. They say redheads make excellent animal Drainers. (Continued on Page 54)
