He walked in with a sun hat angled on his head, baggy shorts, a lounge chair under one arm, a book under the other. His reading glasses secured, almost comically, on the end of his nose. His smile, genuine- ever. Told him I was teaching: “yes, yes — still writing; like to share some pieces with you.” “Please do!” he was quick to respond. Never did. Never saw him again. Until the other night, while paging through the local, I saw his picture and the headline. Chaim Mendelson, his preferred pen name, the man, teacher, poet, who like William Carlos Williams wrote, spoke, and taught in “plain American that cats and dogs can read” is dead. The account read, “His background, his allegiance to excellence and his suspicion of anything that would compromise it, have earned him a place of honor. “Among his interests was poetry,” the article continued. It was poetry that caused our paths to meet when ten years ago I had to meet a certain English teacher to gain entry in the already full creative writing section. Mr. Mendelson overrode the enrollment limit and the next day I was in the course. Chaim Mendelson profoundly influenced my writing, my career choice, my life. On my application for my first teaching position I recalled my early interest in writing and my first creative writing class. “Senior year of high school, I took my first creative writing course. My teacher was William Carlos Williams-oriented and his pen was more of a sword than a writing instrument as he deleted excess word after excess word” I finished reading the account and ran upstairs and retrieved the old folder dated 1971 with my adolescent attempts at poetry fully intact. Penciled in were Mr. Mendelson’s uncompromising remarks: “cliche, vague, abstract, unsupported, unconvincing, lacking details, too gener- alized, don’t philosophize, let the poem explain itself, let some reality in.” I came across one of Chaim’s works “Ingredients.” “One tastes the gnarled hands of the Italian gardener in these tomatoes his broken English the low shed the compost heap sun and soil.” Upon which in imitation I wrote “Instructions.” “One tastes the sincer- ity of the heart in these lines his penciled remarks now remembrances of effort and toil.” Also in the folder was a handwritten note apologizing to a certain, English teacher for cutting his class the day he was absent and there was a substitute. I knew then, as I know now, there is no substitute for him. Sentimen- tal. Right. But that’s how I feel, and Chaim Mendelson always wanted to know my feelings. My true feelings. ADOPT A SHAH ADOPT A SHAH WELCOME BACK TO FREEDOM LOOKING BACK Entering CHS as sophomores, we were not the only people to encounter new experiences. 1979 brought us Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister to Great Britain, the fear of Three Mile Island, and a “China Syndrome” of worry, the miracle of Saturn’s rings, and tears from Kramer us. Kramer. Fifty-three Americans were being held hostage by a fanatical religious government while Miss Piggy was developing a character all her own. 1980 began the decade with athletic triumph. Despite the absence of our country at the sum- mer Olympics, nationalism and pride returned to America with the victories of our athletes at Lake Placid. Ordinary People came to the screen and Preps moved into our lives. The great disaster of Mount St. Helens spread a blan- ket of ash over the state of Washington, and an actors’ strike hit the television tube, leaving us to wonder who actually shot J.R. Already a year into the 1980’s, the country celebrated the return of the hostages. At the same time, Jimmy Carter left the White House and Ronald Reagan gained control of Capitol Hill. Soon after, travelling became difficult; the Air Traffic Controllers walked out leaving mil- lions of people “hung up,” while the Columbia Space Shuttle launched its second voyage. The Rubik’s cube boggled the minds of Americans and Pacman began to flourish. We saw the first woman, Sandra Day O’Connor, named to the Supreme Court, and the untimely deaths of Moshe Dayan, Anwar el-Sadat and John Len- non. Wedding bells rang for Prince Charles and Lady Diana, followed by the nuptials of General Hospital’s Luke and Laura. 1982 ends our lives at Columbia High School yet we continue to encounter new experiences. Senator Williams resigned under pressure of a historic expulsion, and Thomas Kean was elect- ed as governor of New Jersey. We faced the loss of popular performer John Belushi, and saw the return of the miniskirt to the fashion scene. Cuts in federal loans and social security for college students were made while havoc struck, with the institution of martial law in Poland, and guer- illa warfare in the Central American country of El Salvador. Referred to as Columbia’s underground, activist newspaper, The Spark has been in existence for thir- teen years. The newspaper gives the students a chance to express their views and opinions dealing with school and world affairs. The Columbian this year decided to make a change from being a newspaper to a news maga- zine so that we could concentrate more on feature stories. Each issue has had a focus, about which a number of stories were written. The staff has been superb, from the writers to the art staff. Mrs. Poss has been great as the editorial advisor. We consider 1981-82 a year well reported. Radler When graphic arts teacher Dave Vodofsky founded “Sports Friday,” last year, he began what was the first weekly student publication in the his- tory of Columbia High School. As a result, no longer need a student newspaper have untimely articles, hackneyed feature stories and meaning- less editorials written in typical student journalist fashion. In short, “Sports Friday” revolutionized high school journalism at CHS with timely, inter- esting and well written stories, making it the most popular in-school publication before its collapse (temporary) midway through this year due to lack of effort on the part of the staff of “Sports Friday.” But during its existence, stories by regular contrib- utors Jessica Cohn (editor), Jim Sheil, Lisa Greene, Vince Bevacqua and Chris Brienza (who also wrote a column called “Shooting the Breeze” semi-regu- larly) showed a more creative and readable ap- proach to student journalism that was a major cause of its success. “Sports Friday” hopes to resume publication shortly. As the year started everyone had a fantastic attitude, creating a true cougar spirit that continued throughout the year. The 1982 Mirror Staff has tried to capture this atmosphere and personality of the school with few words and many pictures. The basic goal of our yearbook staff, as most is to produce a book that is well accepted by everyone. Accomplishing this goal is not easy, it takes a lot of hard work, cooperation and patience. The yearbook staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their time and effort. Adam Braff Michelle France Patti Cosgrove Steven Ramos Kevin Burns Larry Krasner Suzi Smolen Leigh Petruzziello Irene Giordano David Saunders Sue Snyder Cheryl Clegg David Klein Robert Schomer Frank Wang Leslie Hyans Jessica Altholz Nancy Friedman Jodi Lapidus Cindy Berman Tammarra Jones Judy Lindeman Doreen Cashen Kathy Kennedy Lisa Tarnow Rena Convissor Carol Kilarjian Jessica Weil Thanks for the many hands which made our job easier. A special thanks to Richards Studio for salvaging our crummy negatives and for their last minute developing jobs. Hats off to Gordon Lawshe! Thanks to Lauren Gramens for her work above and beyond the limits of a layout editor. Thanks to the custodians who kept an eye on things for us. And thanks to Mr. Riccardi and Mr. Vodofsky for their help with pictures when we needed them. A big thank you, that words cannot express, to Tom Palma for his guidance, encouragement and sense of humor. It’s been a year of hard work, new ideas and lots of cooperation. Thanks for always being there. You were our advisor but most of all you were — and always will be — our friend. We have tried to put the memories of this year into the 1982 Mirror. While we cannot recall the memories of each individual we hope we have produced a book that will enable you to always remember the past few years at Columbia High School.
