Replay Replay V 1 17 Show The 1980 musical was Carnival, under the direction of Mrs. Ali Butcher, and what a splendid carnival it was. Stu- dent director of the show was Ann Jacobs, and the choreog- raphers were Faith Keller and Francine Sama. Each member of the cast contributed his very best. A fine acting job was given by the leading performers, and the chorus did a superb job, lending their voices to complete the cast. Musical direction was under the supervision of Mr. Wayne Fenstermacher, who conducted a very talented orchestra. Those who worked behind the scenes all con- tributed greatly and made the show a success. Carnival surely proved that love does make the world go 'rou nd. Under the coaching of Bob Curcio, the Cougars outscored all opponents 169-78 in goals. They thus ended the season, ranking fourth in the state with a 13-4 record. New Jersey's Player of the Year and an All- American selection. Rich Clancy led Columbia's awesome attacks, joe Perez, Paul Amerman, and Peter Strauss were doing the ball-handling. All- American Ed Lewis, Don Richardson, and Don Ward were the undaunted defense which kept the ball away from the Columbia goal mouth. Although the state title eluded the Cougars, the CHS laxmen can boast of an array of individual awards unmatched by any other team in the state: the New Jersey Player of the Year, two All- Americans, and eight All-State selections. 20 Peter Strauss battles it out with the opponent. By involving fresh- men, sophomores, juniors, se- niors and teachers, this event was designed to encourage school- wide participation. This week was an opportunity for students and faculty to demonstrate not only their ing the school second spirit butl I week of theirorig-l I January inality as J was des- well. Each ignated a day dur- different activity. Monday every- one was to wear tee-shirts, Tues- day everyone was to don hats, Thursday everyone was to clash, and Friday was class color day with seniors wearing blue, juniors wearing red, sophomores wearing green, and freshmen wearing yellow. Although all days brought participation, hat day was the greatest success. In the end the senior class was victorious win- ning twenty-five dol- lars towards their class fund. To culminate the week's events, Game Show Night was held on Friday night. This week was a big suc- cess with many stu- dents and teachers participating. It may well become a Columbia tradition. tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts t tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirtstel? tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirtswe tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shins te; tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts tee-shirts te i ■ seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — sophom freshmen — yellow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — sophom freshmen — yellow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — sophom freshmen — yellow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — sophomor freshmen seniors — juniors — sophomon — red — sophom reshmen s — blue — red — sophom freshmen — yeuow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — sophom freshmen — yellow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — sophom freshmen — yellow — freshmen seniors — blue — seniors — blue juniors — red — juniors — red — sophomores — green — freshmen — yellow — f seniors — blue — senior , juniors — red — juniors - sophomores — green — freshmen — yellow — fnl seniors — blue — seniors juniors — red —juniors — sophomores — green — sc' freshmen — yellow — fre;1 seniors — blue — seniors - juniors — red — juniors — i sophomores — green — sojJ freshmen — yellow — fresh seniors — blue — seniors — juniors — red — juniors — re' sophomores — green — sopl freshmen — yellow — freshr seniors — blue — seniors — t juniors — red — juniors — rec sophomores — green — sophc freshmen — yellow — freshm seniors — blue — seniors — bk] juniors — red — juniors — red -| sophomore freshmen - seniors — t juniors — r sophomore freshmen - seniors — miors 'rs freshmei! — blue — red - sopho mi 'reshmen blue L «o R: R. It functions as a valuable place for gaining knowledge and for researching important information, the library staff members are always eager to assist the student with his research and will answer any questions concerning library functions. Student aides, who work after school, perform a variety of clerical and maintenance tasks that are essen- tial to the operation of the library facilities and they are an important part of the staff. The library is supplemental to the student's education at Columbia, and we are lucky to have such an excellent facility in our school. J Alternative School The Alternative Program offers juniors and seniors an alternative approach to education. Classes meet four periods, five days a week. This block of time combined with the ratio of students to teachers and the open method of communica- tion all contribute to a positive relationship be- tween student and teacher. The curriculum includes graduation require- ments in English, U.S. History 2, physical educa- tion and career exploration. A wide variety of mini-courses, ranging from basic skills to creative projects, provide additional learning experiences. In the afternoon, students may enroll in a work study program or in other classes within the school. A few of the program's unique features are its town meetings, guest speakers, movies, tutorials, out-of-school athletic activities and in-school gatherings. The Alternative Program tries to help develop a more positive self-image, to demonstrate a more positive attitude towards school and community, to clarify plans for post high school life, and to ac- quire necessary skills to meet every day respon- sibilities. At one time in life, everybody ex- periences the feeling of coming to a new place not knowing anyone. The Newcomers Club welcomes new peo- ple on a friendly basis. PAWS Pupils Animal Welfare Society, PAWS, is an organization dedicated to three basic principles: to alleviate the needless suffering of animals, to awaken humane interest, and to encourage preservation of the natural environment. To realize these goals, PAWS participates in a variety of activities. Bake sales, paper and aluminum drives, and the sale of Van Dorpe originals provide funds which are donated to reputable animal welfare groups. In addition, PAWS is involved in finding homes for stray animals, participating in animal rights seminars, and even giving assembly programs. Currently PAWS is making a video tape to be used in elementary schools. L to R: Miss Schley—Advisor, Ms. Mears—Advisor, K. Partoll, V. Melham, M. Joseph, C. Forde, T. Kralik, D. Whipple. Under the direction of Andy Becker, editor-in-chief, and josh Bloom, assistant to the editor, the Columbian covered such events as Columbia's transition to a four- year high school and the introduction of our new prin- cipal. The Columbian also granted full sports coverage, interviewed outstanding Columbia students, reviewed books, plays, records, and movies, handled letters to the editor, and voiced their opinions in the editorial column. The Columbian overcame the many difficulties it has had in recent years. Over five issues were produced in- cluding the ever-popular April Fools issue. But, for the past two years, we have placed first in our division with great ease. Beginning with last year, the Chess Team decided to think about entering tournaments at a higher level than what we had been doing previously by entering the NJ State High School Team Championship. This was the first time we had entered this tournament in almost fifteen years and we finished with an incredible third place overall. All of our team members have US Chess Federation (USCF) ratings. One of the members of our team was ranked 31st in the nation under sixteen years, at the same time being first in New Jersey under sixteen years. Our team is composed of five experienced players in order of highest ranking: Mark Glickman, Bill Blatcher, Dyon Anniballi, Garland Foster, and Geoffrey Englestein, all of whom are juniors. Despite strong cf'orts in their gan.es, the Cougars' final record wa 1-8. The Cougars' only win was against Mi!!burn, a for- midable opponent. After a scoro' s first half, Columbia came through with thirteen points to come away with a 13-0 victory. The games that followed were marked by strong defensive efforts, but the offense could not put it together. A 19-14 loss on Thanksgiving Day closed the season for the disap- pointed team. Even though the team had a losing season, the players gave their best efforts. With a little luck and fewer injuries, the 1980 football team could have gone a long way. The Team runs onto the field. But the season was not without its highlights. After fail- ing to win their first three games, the Cougars went on a twenty-three game unbeaten streak. In addition, they won the Essex County Tourna- ment, the North jersey championship, North jersey, Section B, and the Iron Hills Conference title. The players also helped coach Gene Chyzowych attain bis 200th career coaching vic- tory. This year's forte was probably defense.
