People tell us that we are entering the real world . We view the future with much hope and trepida- tion, and look back at the past and smile, or even cry, at the way we were. We have lived in the real world all our lives. At Columbia we have developed, matured and experimented. Columbia's extensive curriculum and wide spectrum of extra activities allowed each of us to follow his or her interests in a system geared to the individual. The way we were. In Columbia there were many different types of people. We were a representative cross-section of American life. Columbia provided an outlet for our collective creative output. As a community we functioned well together. Who knows what we would have been like had we been high school students during the turbulent sixties? Most of us never think about that because we are too busy minding our own business in the quiet seventies. Columbia was one of the central environments of our lives. It shaped us in ways which we may not be aware of. We also helped to shape Columbia. We left our special mark and set standards for future Columbians. Unfortunately, there were some problems. Budget crises threatened our cur- riculum, frustrated our teachers and restricted our freedom of action. Once-proud South House was disbanded. Professional educators spent part of their time doing police duty. This discouraged them from sponsoring clubs or independent studies. We lived through the post-Vietnam, post-Watergate era of disillusionment. A new president has been elected. There is a growing sense of rebirth across Ameri- ca. We look toward the future and we are confident. As we restlessly await new challenges, we feel twinges of regret for all the things we did not do and all the people we did not get to know well while we were here. Our ambivalent attitudes toward leaving are difficult to appraise. We have a sense of accomplishment and independence; still, we know we have difficult adjust- ments ahead of us. We make vows to keep in touch with each other, hoping that these vows will be kept. The way we were. We will always remember our Columbia experience. We are products of our parents and our country. We know we have been part of a great school. The way we were. We will never be the same again. 4 the faces we saw ' V the friends we made ■ ! Winning soccer has become a tradition at Columbia under Coach Gene Chyzowych and this year's team was no exception. Led by Big Ten scoring champ John DeVivo (32 goals) the team finished with a record of 15-3-3. The season included victories over long time rivals Kearny and Bloomfield. Columbia finished the campaign ranked in the top 10 of the state and they enjoyed the number one ranking for the majority of the season. Captains Mark Adelman, John DeVivo and Tony Amato led the Co- lumbia entourage to the Essex County and Big Ten all star teams. Other standouts joining the three captains on the Essex County team were seniors Jon Goldman, Larry Finn, Bob Coyle, and junior Brian Reis. The starting team was rounded out by Timmy Lampkin, Tommy Defino and seniors David Shea and Marc Cohen enjoyed an out- standing state tournament in the nets and finished the season with 111 saves and 10 shutouts, 7 shared by Tom McConnell. Brienza Captains: M. Adelman, J. DeVivo; A. Amato The Columbia High School gymnastics team finished a fine 9-2 season with the recapture of the Northern Sectional Cham- pionship crown. This year's success was a total team effort. No one member was outstanding enough to deserve special recog- nition. Gymnastics is not a sport for the timid, but for those who are sure of themselves. So sure, that they amost go to the point of being reckless. Because of this outlook the gymnastics team finished in fifth place in the State Finals this year. 182 Standing L to R R. Ramos, J. Fu, H. Phyllis Becker led the team by placing fifth in unevens — good enough to get her to states. She was supported by seniors Mary Becker, Barbara Granger (co- captain) and Judy Klein (co-captain) on the unevens, Sharon Kelly on floor ex and Debby Cummis on beam. Led by team captains Mark Dalton, Jon Solomon, Frank Prial and Erwin Pluys, the team posted a 10 win, 1 loss dual meet season. In addition to its excellent dual meet record, the team fared just as well in the larger meets. They regained the Big Ten Conference and Essex County titles, and third place finishes in the Edison, Passaic County Coaches and Saint John's Invitationals earned the harriers a 9th place State ranking. Besides the four captains, the Varsity seven also included senior Dave Erdos, junior Rich Mann and soph Dave Swatland. All three were instrumental in each of the team's successes. The team also had an outstanding Junior Varsity squad who did well in their meets. The team included senior Doug Heckman, juniors Dennis Mitchell, Scott Duerr, Jim Logothetis, and James Winslow, and sophs Andy Meyers, Greg Wolf, Don McKee, Dorn DiGioia, and Ivan Amato. 186 Standing L To R Y. Cathy Conners and Karen Kramer will graduate and with them goes a com- bined five years of devotion to the team. However, they couldn't have left on a happier note. The girls finished up with an amazing 10-3 record. 1976-77 marks the most successful season of the girls tennis team. 188 First row: C. Kaplan, C. Moss, E. Skolar, T. Sinoway, P. Wager. Second row: S. Bailin, M. Maybaum, B. Kromer, K. Kramer, I. Genzer, C. Stem J. McCarthy. Missing: L. Perrine, C. Conners. 189 The girls' field hockey team had a disappointing, yet rewarding, season. Although their record came to one win, three losses and two ties, the team was proud of their efforts as Columbia's first girl's field hockey team. Miss Gardner coached the 22 member female squad; Patty Holl and Mary Beth Kakoleski were the team co- captains. 190 ' The 1976-77 football team began their season in somewhat of a dilema: They were without a head foot- ball coach until the latter part of August; a complete staff of assistant coaches wasn't established until the second week of September; a very small number of only seven lettermen was returning from the previous year; of the seven, just two were starters; and the degree of inexperi- ence was heightened by the fact that the seniors were coming off a year lacking in game experience since the Junior Varsity schedule had to be eliminated the previ- ous year. Once the season got under way, the Cougars' strong schedule added to their woes. Morristown, Livingston, Orange, Nutiey, Montclair, East Orange and Irvington were all experiencing better-than-normal seasons. How- ever, the Cougars defense did record a couple of shut-out victories over Millburn and Kearny, while the offense scored in every game. The offense finished with more points than any Columbia team since 1972. Many under- classmen were seeing plenty of action, but the good team spirit was credited to the fine attitudes of the sen- iors Bernstein, Brenner, Bianchi, Cocuzza, de Castro, Gasparino, Hinkes, Hoffman, Kimber, Klotz, Madden, Moglia, Molinaro, Moore, Peters, Salerno, Schuler, and Whittle. 192 bottom RowLxo R R. At the outset of the season it looked to be one of the finest teams in the school's history, because of the equal distribution of talent among the players. This was easily portrayed in the performance of the team's captains, Chris Klotz, Scott Harvey and Richie DeHart. However, due to the widespread sickness on the team, the season started like a ship without sails in a wind storm. However, hard work and dedication by the coaches and players soon guided the ship into victorious waters, where the cougars proved their worth. The seniors provided much leadership, and when playing together were a very tough unit. Chris, Rich and Scott along with Reg Davis and Peter Glacy were finally healthy and playing great ball. Girls Basketball (1976-1977) Led by Captain Patti Holl and Mary Beth Kokoleski, the Couger girls have had another highly successful season. One of the highlights of the season was the winning of the Essex County Coaches Holiday Tournament at Valley H.S. where Columbia defeated undefeated West Side and Mt. St. Dominic Academy to cap- ture first place. Underclassmen, Betsy O'Connor, Jessie Bru- baker, Margaret Dempsey, Regina Sullivan, Loretta Goerke, Mary Pat Sherwood, Eva Pol- caro and Colleen Kroll have played consistent and winning basketball to help Columbia to their successful season. Boys Swimming This year's Varsity Swim Team got off to a slow start with three losses, including one to last year's state champs Westfield High, and one to county champs West Essex High. Howev- er, the Cougars came back strong to finish the season with a winning record, employing the help of coach Dave Yoresh and captains M. Frick and M. Gallene. Columbia this year with one of its strongest swim teams, can look for- ward to more winning seasons with many strong upcoming swimmers. The medley relay team of Marianne Shiel, Andrea Zavesky, Bonnie Shi- el and Barbara Granger set a new record at 2:07.0, and the combined efforts of B. Granger, M. Doyle, B. Shiel and D. Karnaugh set the freestyle relay time at 4:18.0. The team achieved much of its success through the hard work of its new coach Joyce Metzger and captains Mary Doyle and Patty Doyle. Because of the strength of its younger swimmers, the team is looking forward to another winning season next year. Varsity Wrestling (1976-1977) The last time a Columbia wrestling team had a winning record at the mid-season point was in 1971. This year's team was off to a fine start with wins over Kinilworth, Ragway, Irvington, Montclair and Vailsburg. Their very close losses came from stat wrestling powers Seton Hall, Nutley and Belleville. The Cougars won their own Christ- mas Tournament overtaking tough competition from Mountain High School. Seniors at 122 pounds, Bruce Deutsch, Dave Holland and John Palazzo had a 3-way battle all year for the varsity spot. Senior Kevin Kerrigan was unable to complete last season due to an injury; however he was back this year doing a fine job at 129 pounds. Senior Marc Richardson held the 135 pound slot along with a winning record. Armand Cacciarelli, a returning District Champion was back at 14 1 pounds however, he had missed a few matches due to injuries. Despite the injuries Armand placed first in the Christmas tourney and had a winning record. Andy Edmund, two years ago a sophomore district champ and runner up last year, was back at 148. And he took a first place in the Holiday tournament for the second year in a row. Senior Captain Dave Epstein was back again at 158 pounds and enjoyed a fine record along with his second year in a row with a first place medal in the Christmas tournament. Jeff Press, moving from 129 last year up to 170 lbs. this year, had a respectable record along with a first place in the December 25 match. The big boys at 188 and Heavy weight were Steve Blizzard and Jim Borowski. Both were seniors and returning lettermen. Along with the seniors there were younger wrestlers such as freshman Fred Knowles. Fred was wrestling at 101 pounds with a winning record and a lot of spark. He was the first freshman to wrestle on a Columbia varsity team ever. Rahman Love at 115 was a junior who was an excellent wrestler. Rahman was a district runner up last year at 115. Another district runner-up from last year is Junior Ray Cippolini who was back again at 108 pounds. ■ Varsity Wrestling (L-R) Front Row — John Deluisi, Fred Knowles, Claude Bennett, Ray Cipollini, Rahman Love, John Palazzo, Kevin Kerrigan, Dan McNany, Jim Polcaro. The 1976-77 Winter season saw the return of bowling as a Varsity sport. Bowling officially returned to CHS as a club in 1974, which was started by a former student, Guy Stanzione. The Cougars beat East Orange in the first 3 games before hitting a dry spell. It was the consistent bowling senior Captain Justin Fernandez combined with juniors Dan Hurley, Bob Gold, and Bill Spain that helped give the Cougars a respectable half of the season. The Cougars turned spoilers in the final few weeks of the season, and by beating Belleville and Seton Hall in single games, knocked them out of 1st place twice. The second half comeback was aided by seniors Donald Berry and Greg Adams. Gorson Wasserman and John Spencer were also key men on the lanes this season for Co- lumbia. Mr. Geargoe Stager is the coach and he plans to build a stronger team next year with the help of 2 freshmen who are improving with every game this year, George Fischer of Maplewood and Randy Rosen of South Orange. Look for the team to win more and more in the coming years. HOCKEY TEAM Under the direction of the new coach Don Surowitch and assistant coach Peter Lasser the Columbi Hockey Club waged another competitive season. Although many players were lost from last season seniors Dave Silver, Mike Dit Davidson, Greg Gloshinski, Dennis Aukamp, Ed Knoth, John Robertson and John Fotiu Walker held the team together. Captain Dave Silver, assistant captain Mike David- son and Tom Carlin led the team in scoring whereas Ed Knoth led the team on defense. Despite inexperience, goaltender John Forsythe retained about a 3 goal against average throughout the season. The Columbia Hockey Club is looking forward to another good season next year and is hopeful that the team will soon become a varsity sport. «• Standing— coach D. Surwitch, J. Walker, J. Robison, M. Backing the team are seniors Erwin Pluys in the 880 and Bob Grossman in the 440. Chris Gleason and Reggie Davis hope to fill the sprinting chores, while seniors Frank Prial, Mark Dalton and sophomore Dave Swatland will help take care of distance events. This is just a small sampling of the athletes on the outdoor team. The Girls team is coming off a very successful indoor campaign and hope to repeat their performances. Top indoor performers were Cynthia Mersier, Beryl and Beverly Roman, Lynn Woodbury and Freshman star Joetta Clark. Baseball This year's baseball team promised to be a very talented one. Heading the cougars this season were co-captains Frank Vitiello and Terry Bauer, both returning from last years squad. Also returning from last years varsity team were Rich Dehart, Curtis Moore, Fred Shuster, and Ron Sloan, Rich Dehart filled in the second base slot with no problems. Curtis “Chappy Moore was behind the plate. Fred “Bake Shuster headed the outfield in center while Ron Sloan pitched. Other seniors who played were Andy Hoffman, third base; Justin Fernandez, pitcher; Derek Rahusen, outfield; George Rover, second base; and Mike Scalera, pitcher. Juniors on this years squad headed by Mike Vitiello, Frank's brother. Mike swung a big stick for Columbia this year. Curtis Moore was backed up this year by two very capable catchers. Jack Sherwood and Steve O'Connor. Tom Duffy was playing third base while David Thomas rounded out the pitching staff. Sophomores are Dan Confalone, Ron Romano, and Dan Sansone. Girls Volleyball Team Over fifty players turned out for the first offi- cial Columbia high school Interscholastic girls volleyball team. The team had an ex- tremely hard workout during the month of March. The players were well prepared by coach Gene Chyzowych for a ten game schedule. The future of girls volleyball program at Co- lumbia High School looks great. Mr. Chyzo- wych hopes to enlarge their team schedule in coming years. The leading players were: Betsy O'Conner, Patty Holl, Regina Sullivan, Alice Swyntuch, Lisa Masur, Lynn Havemeyer, Abbi Kassin, Kathy Drubel and Motria llnyck- Girl's Softball The 1977 Girl's Varsity Softball team had an excellent season. Their success was largely due to the coaching of Ton Reggiero. Leading the team was senior-captain Marybeth Kakoleski, whose power hitting and outstanding field play led the team to victory. Other key players includ- ed: Lisa Roth, Jesse Brubaker, Jill McCarthy, Sharon Metro, and Col- leen Kroll. This year Columbia had a J.V. squad in addition to the varsity team. Juniors who played well and influenced the outcome of each match were lettermen Bruce Huberman and David Kramer, and new-comer Evan Rakin. Coached by Mr. Irwin Genzer, this year's team once again set its eyes on the Big Ten championship and the County championship. They even spoke frequently about the State championships. Golf In recent years, Columbia had dominat- ed Big Ten Golf, and the goal of this year's team was to win the title again. The golf team was coached this year by Paul Wag- ner.
