The three marching men? George Washington and Thomas Jefferson? Yes. They are the spirit of their '76, but we are the spirit of ours. We are Columbia in '76 and have a spirit all our own. During the American Revolution half of the population was under the age of sixteen, but there was no such thing as a teenager.” There was no separate teen culture with its own music, literature, styles, and fads. Treated as adults, teens were expected to work hard and to conduct themselves as adults. In 1976, Columbia is a microcosm of the separate and accepted teen culture. Looking at us today, you might think that Columbia's dress code is jeans and Wallabies, but in taking a closer study, you will see a wide range of fashion. Our varied fashion choices reflect our individuality and give the visitor a clue to our broad spectrum of interests. At Columbia in '76 we have the opportunity to pursue these interests and inclinations. For those with a love for sports, there are teams and clubs to join. To root for Columbias' teams, we have spirited cheerleaders and song leaders. For those interested in languages, there are lan- guage clubs such as Le Cercle Frangais, the Italian Club, and Forum Romanum. There are also art clubs, orchestra, band, and math clubs. As for curricular interests, we have a myriad of courses to choose from, including the recent additions of photography, psychology, and transcendental meditation. For those who wish to explore an interest even further than the limits of a classroom, we have the option of the independent study. We have been influenced in 1976 by a trend toward communication. This communication includes committees where the students take part in decision-making such as the Coordinating Committee, Tripartate, and the Student Faculty Administration Committee. Students interested in planning school activities may also join the Fire or Assembly Committees. Participants in these groups have an opportunity to work on problem solving within the school. The year 1976 has been a year of immeasurable growth and change for all of us in the graduating class. However, this year has been a crucial one for the world outside the Gothic walls of Columbia High School. Would we have ever dreamed of New Jersey's precarious taxation plans or of headlines describing New York's pending bankruptcy? Ths statistics of massive unemployment across the nation are also startling. The world is in a state of change, and we the class of '76 believe that we are preparing ourselves to cope positively and construc- tively with the problems which will confront us as citizens. As seniors, we are faced with important decisions. This is the year that shapes the rest of our lives, for we must decide on where to put the final focus on our future. We have dreams of college, ideal occupations, and ultimate happiness. Louisa May Alcott wrote, Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead. At Columbia in '76 we have our own styles, responsibilities, pleasures, opportunities, and goals. We have a spirit all our own! Gettes the Columbian VOLUME LV11 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL JUNE. 1976 The Spirit of ‘Columbian’ Gains in the Columbian, the student newspaper of Columbia high school, made great progress during the 1975-1976 school year towards fulfilling its intended purpose as the information medium, the forum, and the voice of CHS students. News and Feature Coverage the Columbian further ex- panded its news coverage this year, spanning a wide range of local and national topics. An article in the September 4 issue first brought to public attention the Science of Creative Intelligence (trans- cendental meditation) course, which became the source of vigorous controversy. The News-Record, Time, and The New York Times followed subsequently with more ad- vanced coverage. November 26 the Columbian First row: K. Krasney, P. Wald. D. Pitman, J. Rosenbaum. Second row: J. Izenman, A. Borden. J. Brill. G. Cohen, A. Friedman. Third row: D. Becker (Editor), R Kaplan, L. Conn again competed with The New York Times in covering the student walk-out to the Board of Education. Slightly less prestigious, but equally as important was the Columbian's continual cover- age of the local budget crisis. A special budget issue, a number of in-depth analyses, and a variety of features exhaustively examined, from every conceivable aspect, the causes, the manifestations, and the possible solutions to the crisis. Reviews of Broadway shows, a behind-the-scenes examina- tion of one of the year’s most popular new television shows, and highlights of various students and student organi- zations supplemented the in- terpretive features. Production and Business the Columbian, for perhaps the first time in history, realized a profit on an issue this year, achieving a goal dreamed by Boards of Educa- tion throughout the country. This was a direct result of three factors, production ex- perience, cheaper paper, and business expansion. As one of the few high school newspapers in the country published and printed entirely within the school, the Colum- bian has continually been cheaper to produce than other school papers. However, it was only this year that the staff gained enough experi- ence and efficiency in graphics to cut production costs. the Columbian increased its advertising revenue this year by both increasing its advertis- ing space and by the creation of a classified ads section. The classified ads were perhaps the greatest success of the year, both monetarily and in terms of reader interest. It not only attracted the attention of Columbia students and teach- ers, but also that of parents and the editorial staff of the News-Record. the Columbian, for all its advances this year, remained one of the most maligned of the student institutions, possibly exceeding student council in amount of criticism received. Typographical errors, produc- tion errors, printig errors, errors in facts, errors in judgement, errors in correc- tions of errors all prompted protest, the Columbian's ulti- mate success in dealing with these problems is of small concern here. What is impor- tant is that the paper this year better fulfilled its purpose, while simultaneously inviting debate and student participa- tion in an effort to make it better. CHAOS (Columbia High Alternative Opportuni- ties School), now in its second year at Columbia High School, is a program for those junior and senior students who are interested in practical education through the acquisition of basic skills and knowledge, and through introduction to a va- riety of disciplines and learning experiences. This is done in structured classes, jointly planned student-teacher Mini-courses, explora- tion of the immediate community, and independ- ent study. In addition to their regular classroom activities, CHAOS students and staff participate in the Home and School Association s Annual Flea Mar- ket, and sponsor speakers from such organiza- tions as Alcoholics Anonymous, Rutgers University Labor-Management Relations, Dare, and Seton Hall law students. Not only does this diversity make the school day more interesting for the student, but it also offers him a broader scope of knowledge. by television newswoman Marilyn Baker The inside story o' Patrfo Hearst nnd The Columbia High School Concert Choir has grown tremendously over the past two years thanks to Mr. Wayne C. Fenstermacher. He has inspired the group towards a much higher level of choral performance. The 1975 Holiday Concert is proof of this. In this concert the choir performed selections from the Messiah and Judas Maccabeus by Handel, both extremely demanding oratorios, yet has proven it's versatility by singing, equally well, both classical and popular compositions. Mr. Fenstermacher has shown that Columbia possesses many talented vocalists, i.e. seniors Philip Acone, Alice Farrell, Harold Finman, Jennifer Hughes, Lawrence Loeber and Melinda Thompson. Many thanks to Miss Rosalind Dobie, the choir's accompanist, for her continual and excellent musical support. VvV THE SOUND OF MUSIC Maria Rainer................... Klein RELIGION Tempest over TM Last Oct. 12,25 high school students waited in the Union, N.J., office of the Transcendental Meditation movement. One by one they entered a room and rev- erently knelt before a candlelit altar holding a picture of the late Guru Dev, Hindu holy man and predecessor of TM Leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Each student brought fruit and flowers to be placed on the altar by Teacher Janet Aaron, who then recited a Sanskrit puja (hymn of worship) and whispered each student’s mantra, the secret word that must be repeated to aid meditation. Those undergoing this standard TM initiation ceremony were enrolled in a course that TM employee Aaron taught for credit at Columbia High in Maple- wood, N.J. Last week the Maplewood course and those in four other New Jer- sey public schools were under sharp at- tack. A nationwide Coalition for Reli- gious Integrity announced plans to file a federal lawsuit to stop the classes, of- fered by the schools under a $40,000 grant in HEW funds made through the New Jersey Department of Education. The coalition argues that TM is a form of Hinduism and that the program therefore violates the First Amendment requirement of church-state separation. The new anti-TM alliance repre- sents various interests: Americans Unit- ed for Separation of Church and State, a nonsectarian watchdog on First Amendment issues; the Berkeley (Calif.) Christian Coalition, a group that grew out of the Jesus Movement and does re- search to combat TM, Scientology and other new cults; and a number of Prot- estant and Catholic taxpayers in New Jersey. The coalition buttressed its claims by releasing a heavily documented book- let by John E. Patton, a Roman Cath- olic attorney who lives in Maplewood. As Patton paints it, TM was going no- where till the Maharishi in 1967-68 de- cided to “camouflage” it as a secular “science” in order to qualify for taxpay- er funds and reach a wider following. Since then TM has become the McDon- ald’s of meditation, attracting hundreds of thousands of initiates. Patton says that TM literature re- places God with the phrase “Creative Intelligence,” which he claims is a syn- onym for Hinduism’s pantheistic deity. Brooks Alexander, a former TM med- itator turned evangelist with the Berke- ley group, explains that TM novices are not indoctrinated outright in Hinduism, as they might be in Judaism or Chris- tianity. Rather, they are gradually con- ditioned to accept a Hindu world view, after which many move into a deeper in- volvement through meditation. Mean- while, two prominent Protestants in Iowa, where the movement’s Maharishi International University is located, have argued in the liberal Christian Century that TM is too religious to be taught in public schools. TMers insist that all this is much ado about nearly nothing. Robert Kory, who runs the New Jersey project for TM, explains that the mantras are just “meaningless” sounds, that the puja simply reminds the teacher of the high- est ideals of his profession, and that the deities it invokes are only “the forces of nature.” In Fairfield, Iowa, Seymour Migdal, dean of the faculty at the Ma- harishi University, is confident that TM will survive court scrutiny. Says he: “It doesn’t require faith, and it doesn’t re- quire worship.” ♦Excerpt: “Guru in the glory of the personified transcendental fulness of Brahman, to him, to Shri Guru Dev, adorned with glory, I bow down.” STUDENTS MEDITATING IN NEW JERSEY CLASS UNDER CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGE Is Creative Intelligence simply another name for God? This article was placed in the yearbook to represent the controversy that arose over SCI TM in public schools and does not represent what SCI TM is and the actual course that was offered at Columbia H S 183 TIME, MARCH 1,1976 - Clubs, committees, workshops, and intramural teams give students the chance to participate in all aspects of the school, and the large number of students involved is evidence of the Spirit of Columbia in '76. The Maplewood-South Orange Hockey Club was formed. In only their second season the Maples enjoyed much success. Attendance grew at home contests; game times were more reasonable due to the Maples joining the Union County League. The '75-76 team was led by the outstanding play of goalie David Rabin, and captain and leading scorer Dave Silver. Good skating and teamwork that helped to produce winning games came from seniors Kevin Conroy, Kurt Volk, and Peter Zipf. The Maples goal is to become the Columbia Cougar Ice Hockey team.
