And I think that the Columbian students are educated by cul- tured teachers are very happy, also they are so nice and friendly for me. Now I am studying very hard for myself in Columbia which everything is fine. I couldn’t speak English too much when I came here, however everyone helped me, so I can speak much better now. And I am taking sub- jects of Chinese, Russian, Math, U.S. History, Russian History and English in here. It seems to me that my schedule is so hard, because teachers teach me by Eng- lish, so I don’t understand English too much but I think it is really a good experience for me to try this kind of schedule. I have many favor teachers who are kind and nice in Columbia. One of them, Mr. MacDonough who is my U.S. History teacher is a extremely nice man. It is difficult for me to study U.S. history, but he always help me. But he told me he has to retire from office only this year. I am so sad and lonely. Probably everybody of Columbia will be sad after he leave from Columbia. I wish we who are educated by Mr. Mac never forget about a great history teacher, Mr. Mac. On the other hand, I like Mr. Trent who was my English teacher and Mr. Quiroli who is my adviser and my Chinese teacher. Mr. Trent, he always keep smiling for everybody and he is so funny. When I always talk with him soon I go to the laughing. I think he is not English teacher but he is comedian. Of course, this is joke. About Mr. Quiroli, he is a very intelligent man and he under- stands whatever I do. I hope he get a beautiful wife from Japan for him. So, of course, other teachers who teach me. they are my dear gentlemen and ladies. I can’t forget that I lived in Columbia in my life. After I go back to Ja- pan, in my dream and in my new life, it is positive I am going to remember of Columbia. Now, I am thinking of my future. I would like to learn the universal politics in college. Maybe I’m believing it’s possible for me to become a stateman and I am going to try very hard for people of the world. Between American and Japanese, they speak different languages each oth- er, but don’t a matter. We are able to have real communi- cation. and we must work for peace on the earth. I would like to work for people rather than for myself in the world. So, finally I will give you, “We are together”. Good luck whatever you do! FOR PEACE AND LOVE. 86 Foreign Exchange Committee FOREIGN EXCANGE: Bottom row: Koji, Mr. Quiroli, Tim Freil. Top: Ronnie Sue Littman, Tammy Adams, Lisa Laiter, Eric Berman. This year it became evident that the Columbian had seen better days. Although it never reached the cali- ber of excellence that had been set over the past several years, it did make some remarkable innovations. Rather than have a slipshod weekly paper full of inaccuracies usually associated with assemblyline journalism, this year's Columbian adopted a “you’ll-get-it-when-we-print- it” policy. By doing this they were able to make the arti- cles well-researched and more comprehensive. In addition, the newsprint quality of the paper, which had given the Columbian a more professional look, was scrapped in favor of the more economical “high school newspaper” approach of white offset paper. This allowed for easier production and permitted more in-school composition and printing. Finally, the Hellring Memorial Fund presses were used to their fullest capacity in the production of the 1972- 1973 issues. This allowed greater flexibility for the now proficient, although sometimes deficient, Columbian staff. One can only hope that the Columbian will see bet- ter days. The House Councils proved to be effective during their sec- ond year. Each house provided activities and eased student boredom. However, the councils were limited in that they could not reform any school policy. In addition, they frequent- ly suffered problems that were the results of a newly estab- lished program. The East House Council was under the direction of John Carlin, president, Rochelle Kostant, vice-president, and Ellen Steiner, secretary. Under their leadership an extremely suc- cessful concert was held in January. Included in other activi- ties they planned was a square dance, after-school movies, and a newspaper. The Council allotted part of its funds to the decorating of the Commons and contributed $271 toward the The Bridge, a community tutorial center. Orin Devinsky, Karen Ciarrocca, and Sandy Brown were the president, vice-president, and secretary of the West House. Their major contribution to the West House was the presenta- tion of films which featured Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields, Laurel and Hardy, and the movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In addition, they sponsored a trivia bowl assembly and purchased a ping pong table for their commons. The North House Council was under the supervision of Ter- ry Martin, president, Gary Leiner, vice-president and Risa Perlmutter, secretary. The major activity of the North House was a donkey basketball game that was sponsored in conjunc- tion with the East House. Led by President Joan Huberman, Vice-President Robert Eisenberg, and Secretary Jody Stern the South House Council organized a successful bake sale and a Marx Brothers movie night which increased South House funds. Top row: Vice- President; Mike, Beck, President; Brett Fenessy. Student Council spent the entire first semester debat- ing its own dissolution. This Constitution, introduced by President Brett Fennessy among others, was finally de- feated in an unusual roll call vote on January 23. Interest in the governing body dropped as it became increasingly difficult to attain a quorum. As the second semester began, the Council started to consider matters of inter- est to the students, concerning eligibility, the “no-bell” system, the Columbian, and others. Much interest was focused on the Coordinating Com- mittee. Students John Carlin, Orrin Devinsky, Brett Fen- nessy, Joanie Huberman and Teri Martin served on the fifteen member body, which advised the Principal on questions of school policy. The committee has not publi- cized its role in school affairs. Yearbooks are for looking back: places, people and things that we’d love to re- member or that we’d like to forget. 1972 was an exciting year, one that some will love to remember and others will try to forget. The 1972 Cougar Soccer Team has emerged as the best in the history of the sport at Columbia. With 11 lettermen returning from a 13- 1-2 record in 1971, Coach Chyzowych and tri- captains Seale, Singer, and Evangelista led the 1972 Cougar Soccer Team to an undefeated season. The Cougars drove to a 14- 0-2 record and won their first Big Ten Championship ever. Numerous school records were shattered, many of them by All-American Elson Seale. However, underneath the many outstanding indi- vidual performances was a well-coordinated team ef- fort which brought Colum- bia as high as number 4 in the state ranking through- out most of the season, their final ranking, number 7 in the state of New Jersey. In the State Tournament, the Booters received a bye in the 1st round and in the 2nd round defeated Parsip- pany Hills. The defense was bols- tered by standouts Larry Evangelista, captain, play- ing the sweeper position, and Captain Jon Singer, guarding the opposing cen- ter forward. The mid-field was carried by senior Claudio Hickel, who played three years of varsity, and juniors Bill Burks and Dan Yafet. Forwards Ademire De- Souza and Craig Bershaw, along with captain Elson Seale, were the mainstays in an offensive machine which rolled up a total of 74 goals in 16 games. Injuries, erratic play, and some questionab- le officiating resulted in a disappointing 1-7-1 won-loss-tie record for the Columbia Varsity Football Team. The Cougars, after a hopeful preseason, played their first game of the season against Morristown under 2nd year Head Coach Dom Calabria. The Cougars drew first blood in this, the open- ing game. Pete Good took a pitch from quarter- back Steve Frampton and lobbed a 28 yard touchdown pass to Al Enderle. Frank Villone converted the extra-point try, and Columbia was ahead, 7-0. Good himself later scored on the tail end of a drive, making the score 13-6. Morristown scored three straight times, and the Cougars had dropped their first game. The following week, Columbia faced Millburn. The Millers jumped to a 14-0 lead until, early in the second half, Pete Good ran a punt back 41 yards for a Columbia touchdown. On the ensu- ing kickoff, the ball was jarred loose from the Millburn ball carrier. John Hoffner took the ball in mid-air and went in for a Cougar six-pointer. Dave Leiwant soon intercepted a Miller pass, set- ting up another score by Good. Millburn. finally pulled ahead and won, 27-22. Jim Romano, after a fine performance in the Millburn game, took over at quarterback against the Livingston Lancers. Good scored two touch- downs and Mike Butkus hauled in a clutch pass for the Cougars who, however, fell by a 26-12 score. The Cats began well against Orange, with Lei- want intercepting a pass and Joe Springer end- ing a drive with a touchdown. A Leiwant six- pointer was sandwiched between two Orange scores, and the Cougars led by 15-13. The Tor- nadoes crossed the goal line 3 times in the sec- ond half and triumphed, 38-15. Joe Tamburo, returning from an injury, joined the Cougars in facing a tough defeat at the hands of Nutley. Good had an 85 yard punt return for a touchdown, and Romano went in on a bootleg for a score against the Maroon. The Cougars were close to beating Montclair for the second straight year, tying the Mounties in the Woodman Field mud. The defense played a fine game, the only Mountie touchdown com- ing after an errant snap on a punt deep in Cou- gar territory. The Cougars tied the game with Good sailing 88 yards with a punt for a touchdown. Columbia's 7th game was played against Kearny. Bob Vida stepped in for the bed-ridden Good and performed admirably, taking the opening kickoff 61 yards. The Cougars couldn't score, and Kearny took over and went ahead 7-0 on a drive. Vida ran the Kearny kickoff back 89 yards for Columbia’s long score. Williams later blocked a Kearny punt, but the Kards held and drove for the winning touchdown. The following Saturday, East Orange fell to Columbia for the first time in 15 years. Neither team scored until the third period in this game. After Leiwant blocked a Panther punt, the Cougars took over on the East Orange 1 yard line. Springer plunged in over right guard for a touchdown, and Villone’s conversion attempt was good. Villone added a field goal after anoth- er mishap involving the Panther punter. Colum- bia held on to win their first game of the year. In the season finale on Thanksgiving, Colum- bia battled Seton Hall Prep. Coach Calabria promised the fans some suprises for this game, but the Cougars couldn’t stop the powerful Pir- ate offense. Dave Leiwant took a hand-off from Pete Good out of the single wing offense and sped around end for Columbia’s lone touchdown. The Columbia Football Team voted awards to outstanding players for the first time in 1973. Peter Good received Best Back Honor; Dave Lei- want and John Russen both received MVP awards; Joe Tamburo was cited as the outstand- ing lineman; Steve Diamond was voted as the Most Improved Player. 118 Bottom row: David Lewis-Jones, John Cicciarone, Bob Viola, Craig Feldman, Al Enderle, Dave Schweikert, Chip Issacs, Mike Rodman, Craig Zusi, Dennis Carrogher, Dean Brauchli, Anthony Giordano, Dave Crandall, Robert Ouaaolino. The 1973 Cougar Harriers, led by Coach Len Klepack and Co-Captains Bob Duerr and Pete Davis, produced a record season. The team’s score was 8 and 3 in dual meets. The big thrills for the team came with their wins in the Big Ten Conference and Essex County Meets at Branch Brook Park. The Cougars Top Seven (with se- niors Pete Davis, Bob Duerr, Tom Evers, Juniors Al Krikszens, Kevin Reiss and Sophomores Jim Davis and Jim Somers) ran to an overwhelming victory in the Big Ten Meet, beating runner-up Montclair by 24 points. Da- vis broke the course and Big Ten records at this time, running the 2.5 miles in 12:05 for a first place finish. Duerr finished second in 12:24, erasing the school rec- ord of 12:33. Columbia rounded off its victory by placing Tom Evers 11th, Al Krikszens 13th and Jim Davis 20th. The following week the Cougar 7 again journeyed to Branch Brook Park for the Essex County Meet. The Har- riers won by a slim four points, edging out second place to Glen Ridge in a tremendous team effort. Davis won the individual first place title, setting a meet record, Duer fin- ished fifth, with Jim Somers, Jim Davis and Tom Evers rounding out the winning team. The year 1972 also saw Coach Klepack’s runners trav- elling to several invitational meets. These included a fifth place finish in the Fordham University-sponsored East- ern-Cross-Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. A fourth place finish was achieved in the Coaches’ Shore Invitational Meet in Lakewood. The team showed great potential this year with juniors Mike Clark, Ron Gonzalez, Frank Massa, and Robin Voor- hees and senior John Somers all turning in fine perform- ances in dual meets. It was this potential plus the hard work of all the participants that made it possible for the Cross Country Team to have a rewarding competitive season. 122 123 CROSS COUNTRY: Bottom row: Bob Duerr, Pete Davis. Despite playing probably the toughest schedule in the state, the high spirited Cougars felt disappointed with their improved record of 7 wins and 16 losses. Spirits ran high as the Cougars breezed through their scrimmages without a loss. Inexperience under pressure seemed to be their weakness while dropping a cliff hanger to a solid New Providence team by a misleading 7 points in their first game. This lack of experience seemed to have plagued them for most of the season. With the addition of four games to the regular season, and the withdrawal of West Orange from the Big Ten, the Cougars found themselves playing such highly rated teams as Westfield, Barringer, Summit, and Thomas Jef- ferson. It was to these games that the team looked for- ward the most, playing for the big upset. Although it nev- er materialized, the Cougars always managed to stay within range. Captains Barry Adams and Richard Broskie provided the main offensive punch for their team throughout the season. Coach Pete Cross continually stressed the need for a controlled, deliberate offense and a solid defense. As a result of hard work, the Cougars held their oppo- nents to under 56 points per game during the regular season: a goal they had set at the beginning of the year. Their defense, along with their determination never to give up on any game, reflected on the scoreboard as the Cougars rarely lost one by more than 7 points. Because of a well-balanced team, everyone was able to contribute to the improved record. Tom Cohen proved to be a steady rebounder and scoring threat throughout the season. A more confident Mark Wallhauser capped off his season with the game against Mountain High School. Six-foot-seven Bill Rebhan came around in the second Orange game, scoring 12 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. For only the fourth time in Columbia basketball histo- ry, the Cougars participated in the State tournament, bowing to one of the best teams in the state, Weequahic. That loss, along with the resignation of Coach Pete Cross, made the end of the season an unusually sad one. The basketball team will miss his energetic devotion and involvement with the players and the game. The seniors would like to thank him for the sacrifices he made to make us better ballplayers. 125 126 BASKETBALL: Bottom: Captain Barry Adams, Coach Pete Cross, Captain Richard Broskie. Although it was a disappointing sea- son, some consolation may be derived from the fact that five of these losses were by seven points or less. The team achieved second-place finishes in both the BigTen Champi- onship and the Essex County Championship. The Mermen were led by Captain Bob Hetherington and Assistant Captain Mike Breen. Important contributions were made by senior Peter Skarzinski, juniors Hank Kear- ney and Peter Amerman, and sophomore Bruce Pearl. Columbia swimming will definitely be aided by the en- trance of strong swimmers. With Amerman, Kearney, and Pearl combining to form a strong team nucleus, and with Coach David Yoresh accepting nothing less than victory, theColumbia Mermen should return to its winning ways. 129 SWIM: Front row: Bruce Weiner, Mike Breen, Bob Hetherington, Carol Clark. Its initial season, like most sports competi- tions, was comprised of disappointment and elation. Because this was the first season, there were few meets in which the team was able to compete. A dual meet with Jefferson High School was the only one of its type and was won by Columbia, 35- 33. A number of boys ran excellent races in spite of the 15° weather. There were two open meets at the Jersey City Armory in which the school records were broken. Peter Davis broke his own two-mile record while Bob Duerr established a new half-mile standard, and John Santillo broke the 440 yard mark. Doug Richardson set an excellent high jump mark, and Jim Somers and Jim Davis set soph- omore records in one and two mile runs respectively. Key injuries threatened to dampen the Cougars’ chances in the first annual Big Ten Winter Championships. However, wins by Mike Durbin in the high jump and Bob Duerr in the half-mile led Colum- bia to victory by a five point margin, and this without the services of Peter Davis and Jim Somers. Key roles were also played by John Santillo, Elson Seale, who set a school record in the 60-yard dash while being out-leaned at the tape, and by Joe Tamburo in the shot put. The State Relay Championships saw a distance medley team of Tom Evers, John Santillo, Bob Duerr and Peter Davis who settled for a fifth place finish. At the State Group 4 Championships, three boys qualified for the State Championship meet at Princeton’s beautiful Jadwin Gym. Those boys were Doug Richardson and Mike Durbin in the high jump, and Peter Davis in the two-mile run. Other seniors who contributed to the success of the first Cougar Indoor Track squad were sprinters Dave Leiwant and Bruce Pietz, and middle distance runner Art Pomerantz. 132 1973 INDOORTRACK AND FIELD FIRST SEASON Dual Meet vs. Jefferson High School — won 35-33 First BigTen Winter Championship — won State Relay Championships — Group 4 fifth place — Distance Medley State Group 4 Championships High Jump 3rd place — Doug Richardson High Jump 5th place — Mike Durbin Two Mile Run 5th place — Peter Davis State Championships High Jump 7th place — Doug Richardson Two Mile Run 8th place — Peter Davis 133 t Coach Al Hector’s C.H.S. Wrestling Team posted a 6-8 regular season record in the 72-73 campaign. The Cou- gars started off like a barn-a-fire, winning their first five meets. However, they dropped the next eight before re- ceiving a forfeit win from Vailsburg because of that school’s inner conflicts. An addition to this year’s schedule was the Roselle Park Holiday Invitational Tournament, held during Christmas vacation with seven other schools. Seniors Steve Frampton (148 lbs.) and Ray Marks (106 lbs.) won second place medals. Most wrestlers agree that the regular season is just a warm-up for the post season activity. First, the wrestlers hope to win, or be a runner-up, in the District Champion- ships so that they can advance to the Regional Champi- onships. Regional winners then go to Princeton to partic- ipate in the State Championships. Four wrestlers, runners-up in the Districts, were sent to the Regionals held at Irvington High. They were: Marks, Frampton (this year’s captain), Russell Crockett (115 lbs.), and junior Dan Sherman (141 lbs.) Senior Gordon Williams (178 lbs.) and junior Grey Perna (157 lbs.) won third place district medals. Bad luck and rough pairings struck the four regional reps, as they all lost in the first round the following week at Union High. Other steady varsity performers included: seniors Jeff Buechler and Frank Villone plus juniors Eric Tevrow, Mark Sanborn, Tony DiRocco, John Cousins, Pat Hardy and Pete Van Loon. 134 135 WRESTLING TEAM 1973 VARSITY RECORDS Columbia 30 West Orange 24 Columbia 45 Jefferson 11 Columbia 33 Montclair 30 Columbia 36 Clifton 18 Columbia 39 Irvington 21 Columbia 15 Scotch Plains 32 Columbia 18 Nutley 31 Columbia 15 Kearny 36 Columbia 14 Livingston 37 Columbia 22 Bloomfield 24 Columbia 0 Millburn 55 Columiba 15 Bellville 41 Columbia 12 Morristown 34 Columbia won by forfeit to Vailsburg WRESTLING TEAM 1973 JUNIOR VARSITY RECORDS Columbia 45 West Orange 18 Columbia 50 Jefferson 11 Columbia 18 Montclair 30 Columbia 38 Clifton 18 Columbia 26 Irvington 17 Columbia 30 Nutley 33 Columbia 3 Scotch Plains 48 Columbia 39 Kearny 21 Columbia 6 Livingston 49 Columbia 18 Bloomfield 27 Columbia 9 Millburn 54 Columbia 20 Bellville 35 Columbia 9 Morristown 46 Columbia won by forfeit to Vailsburg 136 137 From a bystander’s point of view, the Colum- bia High School Varsity Gymnastics Team, coached by Mr. Marvin Speidel of South Orange Junior High, has done extremely well. Although they have only been in existence for one year, their high spirits and morale have given them a superb outlook for the future. Captain Tim McNany has shown his potential by competing on the parallel bars, high bar and long horse with scores of 5.37, 5.45, and 8.10 respectively. Don Gialanella, co-captain, received a com- bined total score of 27.80 while competing in the all-around events. He participated on the high bar and parallel bars (his specialties), pommel horse, long-horse, rings, and on the mats. Other members of this fine team are Bob Hal- dy, Mitch Rothstein, Keith Kozlowski, Matt Pa- konis, Pat O’Connor, Joe Magid, Steven Fram, John Conlin, Norman Spier, Robin Weiss, and Rhoda Metzger. Letters were received by Tim McNany, Keith Kozlowski, Don Gialanella, Bob Haldy, Joe Magid, Mitch Rothstein, Pat O'Connor, John Conlon, and Steven Fram. 138 139 ADMIN. FACULTY Dr. F.
