Having this to contend with, the Assembly Committee did its best to create memorable assemblies for the remaining openings. One way in which they did this was having various student — organized presentations including bands, a variety show and a folk assembly. At election time last fall the students witnessed a political knockdown session between Congressman Minish and his rival Jim Shue. Later Columbia was visited by Dr. Donald Lyle Halsted, now a professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, who presented first-hand information on the conditions in South Africa. One of the best assemblies was put on by The Proposition , an acting group who made up skits impromptu on the basis of audience suggestions. Over population in the community and a need for better equipped facilities has brought about the expansion of the old school building. Two new wings were added and are now in use. They include classrooms, a cafeteria, laborato- ries for science and the languages plus a new library. The House Plan system, which will divide the main school into four sub-schools, will not begin until next fall, thus the sen- ior class which suffered through the construction of the new wings will not be here to experience the system they were created for. The Columbian has reflected the new introspective mood of the student body by switching em- phasis from events of national significance to events and person- alities within the school. The Columbian has become a more personal paper, featuring more columns and reviews, and includ- ing more features about the ordi- nary student, instead of only the more prominent personalities. The expanded eight page editions are issued biweekly and generate much interest. Columbian Editor-in-chief Stuart Weinberg with the Editorial Staff Publications Guildscript Co-editors Sharai Freedman and Nancy Savel Guildscript again attempted to compile the finest of student art, photography and creative writing. This is a hard task for one can not really judge the merit of a per- sonal piece of writing or artwork. Started two years ago, Conten- tions meant to depart from Guildscript in taking a more po- litical path, but the problem of censorship curtailed its political expression to a certain degree. Many students were disappointed this year that these publications came out so infrequently. Contentions Editor-in-chief Andy Warmflash and crew Foreign Affairs Toru Tsujumoto from Tokyo, Japan tells why he came to Columbia: I wanted to study English, especially con- versation. I felt that the exchange student system would be a good experience for me in my life although, regrettably, I will receive no credits for my schooling here back in Japan. I wanted to make many friends in the U.S.A. I also wanted to see Japan politically from the point of view of America or some other country. C.H.S. was visited for three weeks by two students from the World Youth Fo- rum program: Cecelia Gomez from the Philippines and Hudson Liyai from Af- rica. We were also the host for Marisol Susaeta from Chile who came under the Open Door Program with South Amer- ica. Toru Tsujimoto Cecelia Gomez Hudson Liyai Council Strives For Constructive Change This year President Roger Greenbaum and Vice-President Tim Lee have had perhaps the most important responsibilities ever assigned to school officers. They have had the task of creating a new constitution to be used under the House Plan system next year and have also been given the opportunity to bring about change. Late last year Council began forming a series of ad hoc committees to discuss or act upon certain issues. Committees like Liaison, which deals with the eleven student proposals from 1969-70; FSPAC, which provides a tie be- tween students, faculty and administration; and Curriculum Committee, which makes recommendations for course additions — all have given the present student government the means with which to make some of the much needed changes here. The Cougars then began to play more to their true potential and lost three tough, consecutive games to Montclair 14-0, Kearny 13-7, and East Orange 11-8. On October 16, the Columbia soccer team lost to Bloomfield High in the first round of the state tournament. Although the team was defeated, there were several bright spots for the 1970 soccer team. Early in the season Colum- bia upset Chatham 1-0. Later in the sea- son Columbia tied Kearny 1-1. Colum- bia's final record was 10-3-3, the finest in the history of the school. Several seniors were instrumental in the success of the soccer team this year. Co-Captain Warren Eick and Albert Magliaro made the All-State team, and Ken Pogash was an All-Big 10 halfback. Other senior standouts were: halfback, Jim Ullman and co-captain Mike Kogan; forwards, Art Feld and Skippy Miller and Marty Kromer, Marty Barkan, and Lou Popiel. Marty Barkan 159- The highlight of the 1970 Cross Country team's season was the squad's upset of a heavily favored Nutley team in their last dual meet of the season. Running on their new home course, Cameron Field, the Cougars were led by Walt Wygera who won the race in 12:27. Following him were Paul Gibbons who was fourth in 12:41, Jack Snedeker, fifth in 12:45, Peter Davis, sixth in 12:46, Mike Schuler, eighth in 12:50, and Charlie Smith, tenth in 13:14. The Ffarriers, coached by Leonard Kle- pack, and captained by Jeff Dee and Jack Snedeker, finished with a fine 9-3 dual meet record, a disappointing fifth in the Big 10, a surprising third in the Essex County Meet, and a discouraging eighth in the Sectionals. Coach Klepack summed up this year's team, which was hampered by injuries all season, this way: Key injuries pre- vented us from becoming a champion- ship team, which we almost were in spite of them. Steve Krikszens and William Cohen STANDING: Coach Leonard Klepack, Bill Sainz, John Somers, Larry Bill Cohen, Peter Davis, Gary Rappaport. Michael Inserra and Captain Jack Snedeker It was a disappointing year for the wrestling team. Coach A1 Hector's grapplers managed to win only three out of twelve dual meets, and just barely finished third in the dis- trict wrestling meet. Alan Edson wrestling in the 130 pound weight class was the most successful Columbia wrestler. Edson tallied a 13-2-1 record, and he was just narrowly beaten in the district finals, 4-3. Matt Kenny, wrestling in the 178 pound division com- piled an 11-3 mark this season. He too, lost in the district finals. The most exciting Columbia grappler was Gerald Auriemma. Auriemma in his first year of wrestling was the varsity heavy- weight throughout the season. Auriemma compiled a 9-7 record and despite his lack of experience, pinned his op- ponents nine times. Auriemma lost in the semi-finals of the districts in a highly disputed match that extended for fifteen minutes. Other standouts on the wrestling team were Bob Machiverna, Jeff Metzger, and Larry Young. The Columbian swim team began its season this year as usual; with an opening meet loss to Westfield. Then, under the leadership of co-captains Ben Mack and Eric Pearl, the Mermen proceeded to win the next six meets before dropping their second dual meet to the Blue Devils. Despite victories by senior star Dan Goble, and strong efforts by seniors Korner, Cooney, and Welt, the Mermen were able to win only two of the remaining five meets, bring the dual meet mark to eight and five. Turning to the championship meets, the Mermen swam to an easy victory in the first annual Big Ten Meet. The team took a third in the Essex County Championship, finishing behind Newark Academy and a strong Seton Hall team. Goble demonstrated the old form in this meet taking a first in both the fifty and one-hundred yard freestyle events, and anchor- ing the second place freestyle relay team. The final meet of the season was the State Cham- pionships, held at Princeton University. The Mermen did not fair as well in this meet, placing only sixth in overall competition. Goble took a third in the 50 yard freestyle, Pearl took a fifth in the 100 yard backstroke, and the relay team of Mack, Hetherington, Pearl, and Goble placed third. L. Kerry Dawe L. Peter Sharzynski Mike Breen, Dave Welt, Bob Hetherington, Dan Goble, Peter Skarzynsky, John Cooney, Benjie Mack, Eric Pearl, and Coach Yoresh, sitting. Benjie Mack and Ed Christian Dan Goble Benjie Mack Captain Cathy Lemer Phil Westreich Coach Pete Cross 167 Plagued by injuries and lack of height, the CHS basketball squad posted a disappointing 2-16 season record. Senior Neil Hoffman began the season suffering with an ankle injury, while Rich Cimirro, at the request of his doctor, was forced to retire from the team late in the season. Because of the shortage of big men, varsity coach Pete Cross relied on quickness and a tenacious defense to compensate. The pressure defense used by the Cougars accounted for numerous substitutions, and a starting five was never seen. Seniors Bill Poutsiaka and Hoffman were used as both forwards and back- court men, while Phil Westreich, at an even 6', played at the forward position. However, there were several encouraging spots where the Cougars played both a strong D and a very effective offense. This was apparent in the first Columbia victory over Belleville. In this contest Hoffman hit for 20 points, and Westreich popped in an additional 14. Two 2-point losses at the hands of Irvington and Nutley added unnecessary frustration to the players. Phil Westreich 168 BACK ROW: Coach Robb, Jim Agresti, Eric Washington, Bob Socci, Mike Poplawsky, Mike Davidson, Barry Adams, Mark Wallhauser, Tony Martin, and Coach Cross. FRONT ROW: Neil Hoffman, Bill Poutsiaka, Rich Cimirro, and Phil Westreich. Jim Agresti 169 It all ended so suddenly. There were many days when we never saw the sun. Endless months of days which seemed to have lost their names. Days of gray. But in all of us something was happening that the color of the day couldn't prevent. Something in the explosion of understanding. Something in a shattering of an idol. In a smile fired across a room. Thursday's up and Friday's fall. A three-year-old journey into ourselves. New directions. New faces. New people. And it all ended so suddenly, that maybe nothing has really ended at all. 170 r : uors VJftROROBE' Five Hundred Acres on the Sunny Side of the Moon to each Subscriber. Photography Editor The people who made this yearbook possible are too numerous to mention individually. We thank them all for helping with the almost unending tasks of identifying pictures, collect- ing and collating material, typing, proofreading and still more proofreading. Special thanks and appreciation go to the fol- lowing: Miss Patricia O'Hanlon, Editorial Advi- sor, for help and advice. Mr. Edwin Faust, Busi- ness Advisor, for help in planning our financial affairs. Mr. Wynne Murchison, our American Year- book Company representative, who was always available, either by phone or in person, when- ever we needed his advice, and was always ready with fresh ideas. Mr. Marvin Gershenfeld, Mr. Richard Gross, and the rest of the staff at Richard's Studio for exceedingly fast service, and for coming to take pictures at a moment's notice. Mr. Virgil Spencer, of the American Yearbook Company, for help in solving some of our trick- ier problems and the ability to interpret some of our more garbled layout instructions. Mrs. Doris McKee, Miss O'Hanlon's substitute, for her devotion and long hours after school. Mrs. Charlotte Mathias, Mrs. Jacquelin DeVinny and Mrs. Doris Fitzsimmons for their help with announcements, names and addresses, identification of names and pictures, and the mail. Mr. Chic Gleischer for his services as a pilot, which made possible the photograph on the endsheets, and to Paul Solomon, for actually taking the picture. Mrs. Mordina Fisher, editor of the News-Record, for her help in providing photo- graphs of our World Youth Forum students, and the members of all-state musical organiza- tions. Hal Halpern Studios for the photograph of Lau- rie Holder. Stanford University 1970 Bulletin for the use of the photograph on page 23.
