A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be . I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you. A Time Of Innocence The three'day Woodstock fair was more than the everyday pop festival. Some 300,000 incredibly peaceful kids had a blast — it didn’t matter that the weather was bad and the food almost nonexistent. Love (and a little grass) conquers all. 131 1 Campaign ’68: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly 134 Moratorium: A Call For Peace Opponents of the brutal war in Vietnam were disap- pointed by the election of Richard Nixon and dis- mayed by his initial refusal to end the war. Deter- mined to prove that America would not quietly accept the continuance of the war, a moratorium committee made plans to make November 15, 1969 a day of protest. Peaceful demonstrations were held in major cities across the country. Three hundred thousand marchers went to Washington, D.C. to hold the lar- gest demonstration of any type ever held in the na- tion’s capital. High school students left school to cir- culate peace petitions and to prove they did not ac- cept the war as part of their daily life. In school, the day was reserved for lectures and seminar discus- sions of the war. 135 Awe And Involvement: The first successful landing on the moon and the subsequent exploration of the surface by astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong was an event that the entire world watched with amazement and awe. However, for many Americans, the space feat only added to the concern brought about by the govern- ment’s inability or unwillingness to cope with a multi- tude of problems at home. The sixties saw a dramatic change in the method used to reform conditions in the United States. The violent murder of Martin Luther King, an apostle of non-violence, helped to speed the death of the non-violent demonstration as an effective means of causing change. Students on campuses across the nation found that the use of force quickly realized Vocabulary Of The 60’s goals they had been peacefully pursuing for many years. But non-violence never quite died: it was evi- dent at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair and during the Moratoriums of 1969. The fantastic events of the sixties have unquestiona- bly illustrated that the average American is involved in world affairs more than ever before. He may have his own methods for achieving change, but his in- volvement and concern unites him with his fellow Americans. Columbia also reflects a new attitude of involvement. Students have become highly active in various service organizations, whether on a national, local, or school level. As a result, interest in pre- viously “All-School” activities — dances, dramatic productions, and council — has fallen off drastically. 137 Pologe Resign Pologe Electedin New Vote Ross Pologe Resigns 138 Ten Compete For Top Job See note r'. — .._ Productiori Excellent; Attendance Poor In spite of poor attendance, Moliere’s Tartuffe, this fall’s dramatic production, reflected Columbia’s usual excellence in dramatic technique. A simple set was greatly enhanced by the elegant 16th cen- tury costumes worn by the cast comprised of Roger Greenbaum, Annmarie Hughes, Jody Tomaro, David Levine, Kyle McGrath, David Medinets, Claudia Isaac, and Dan Evans. While the cast was excellent, the crews guaranteed the success of the pro- duction by working up to the last minute securing props and putting finishing touches on the set. 140 Past Productions Successful Over the past three years, the play was the thing for many Columbia students. A great variety of dramatic productions were ambitiously attempted and success- fully executed under the expert direction of Miss Wheeler and Miss Grehl. The 1968 school year opened with the production of Arsenic and Old Lace, a charming, ridiculous murder story set in Brooklyn. Kyle McGrath, Lisa Lindstrom, Mark Blum, Gilda Spiotta, and Robert Capito all per- formed professionally. Guys and Dolls, a Damon Runyon short story set to music, was the 1968 All School Music. It provided entertainment and displayed the musical abilities of Wendy English, Carol Ockman, Mark Lapman, Robert Tomaro, Mark Blum, and Ellen Okin. J. B.f by Archibald MacLeash opened the 1969 dramatic season with a forceful examination of life itself. Kyle McGrath, Robert Tomaro, Fred Applegate, Jr., and Mark Goldstaub starred in Columbia’s most daring dramatic effort. The All School Musical, Take Me Along, starred Joel Silver, Kathi Hartman, David Medinets, Fiona Newman, Charles Hoens, and Bar- bara Wilhelm. Although not as popular as the preced- ing productions, it still represented a great effort on the part of all involved. Behind every production was a dedicated band of individuals comprising the crews. They were responsi- ble for the lights, props, sets, costumes, and make- up. Together, the casts and crews managed to make Columbia’s productions successful. 141 Prom Tradition Upheld Due to previous lack of interest and differences of opinion on whether the sen- iors wanted a prom or not, Nelson Burns, President of the senior class decided to take a vote. The majority of the seniors given a choice of a prom, a rock concert, or nothing at all, voted for a prom. Nelson’s next task was to organize fund raisers to lower the cost of the prom. The first project was a series of car washes. As autumn approached, a new project began. A small nucleus of determined seniors organized a “rake-in , clearing leaves from the lawns of parents, teachers, and neighbors. Winter brought activities in- doors. Lollypops and chocolate bars were sold in school. This last project brought in more money than any other, proving that the way to the pocketbook is through the stomach. 142 SENIORS IN ACTION: Opposite page, top, left, Charmane Sparkman. Donald Stevenson played brilliantly this year, surprising all by scoring even more goals than the outstanding John Rij. The accurate passing and well executed attacks of the offensive line paid off in another first when John Rij, Donald Stevenson, and Yuriy Bihun together scored an amazing twenty-five goals. The defensive lineup of Rich Barone, Phil Dempsey and Darren Edson formed a consistent supporting screen. Halfbacks Mike Kogen, Marty Berman, and Joe Palazzo were very efficient in feed- ing shots to the forward linemen. Goaltender Gordon Richards backed up the team with his constant alertness, creating a new school record of six shutouts. To no one’s surprise, Joe Palazzo, John Rij, Donald Stevenson, David Waldman, Mike Kogen, and Gordon Richards were chosen for the Big Ten team. 144 The C.H.S. The audience was extremely attentive as he sang a large selection of songs, some of which he had composed. Many students appreciated the honesty they sensed during the performance, and Mr. Rankin received a standing ovation at both assemblies. One of Columbia’s most unusual assem- blies was Jean-Leon Destine and his Afro-Haitian dancers. The highlight of the assembly was a performer who played two penny flutes at the same time. In early December the Board of Education spon- sored a program on drug abuse. Dr. Don- ald Louria from the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry came to speak for the second time. Three days later a ques- tionnaire concerning drug usage was completed by all juniors and seniors. A week after the questionnaires were distri- buted, the college sponsored seminars during junior and senior English classes to answer student questions. Students ex- pressed the feeling that the seminars “failed to accomplish their purpose.” 147 Harriers Able Against Orange The best Cross Country team effort of the season came against the worst team in the Big Ten, Orange. In that meet, seven Harriers ran under 13:35 lead by Bill Vernick in 13:05; Jack Snedeker, 13:18; Walter Wy- gera, 13:21; Jeffrey Dee, 13:24; Mike Schuler, 13:28; Paul Gibbons, 13:33; and co-captain Robby Blau, 13:35. Through the efforts of the new Cross Country coach, Mr. Jack Klepack, the Harriers improved upon their 1968 record. Due to the great depth in the Cross Country team in the ’69 season, they were able to take a third in the Big Ten Conference, a Fourth in the Sec- tionals, and a fourteenth in the State meet. Ten runners on the team were able to run 2.5 miles under 13:40. ii THE 1970 HARRIERS: Top, Larry Tobey, Kim Buchanan. In the next game, against Livingston, halfback George Martz was injured on the third play and was unable to take part in the rest of the game. The Cougars put in a good effort, but lost 24-0 with strong performances by Steve Bartholomew and John Porcelli. Frank Uzzolino did a fine job substituting for injured Steve Bartholomew in the 14-14 game against the previously top-ranked Nutley squad. The Cougars received a crushing blow in the Montclair game when Joe Busichio, fullback, and John Porcelli, guard and defensive tackle, were injured and put out of action for the rest of the season. The most heartbreaking loss of the year came when East Orange, with fifty-one seconds left in the game, pulled off a ninety-eight yard run to beat Columbia 19-15. The Cougars finished the season with a 3-5-1 record. 153 Supporting Cast Is Huge As Gridders Perform 154 GRIDDERS AND COMPANY; Preceding page, John Porcelli. Opposite page, top, Steve Bartholomew. Under the direction of Editor- In-Chief Buzzy Hellring the irregularly published, uninteresting paper of 1967- 68 slowly evolved into its present form of a bi-monthly, twelve-page edition. Encouraged by the success of the paper the editors tried an experiment during March and April. During that period the Columbian was published weekly. With the increase in size and frequency came an increase in student interest. Students began to write letters to the editor about things they considered important; the paper discussed controversial issues; and the Columbian became a major means of communication at CHS. This year Guildscript, orginally a literary magazine, became a creative arts mag- azine including art, photography, and any form of literature. The 3-15 record of the team disproved the Newark Star Ledger’s prediction of a high place for the squad in the Big Ten Conference. However, the Cougars did achieve individual recognition in the conference when seniors Doug Rush and Steve Crandall received honorable mention awards. Expectations for a good season were thwarted in the first game when the over-confident Cou- gar squad was soundly beaten by an unexpect- edly tough Bloomfield team. However, under the leadership of co-captains Rush and Crandall, the team bounced back to defeat Belleville by ten points. The individual ability of the Cougars was dem- onstrated throughout the season. Junior Neil Hoffman and sophomore Jeff Greenman dis- played their accuracy against West Orange by scoring 23 and 14 points, respectively. Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the year came against West Orange when junior Bruce Wald scored 4 points and assisted in scoring an additional 4 points to win the game. Fine individ- ual performances were also turned in by se- niors Steve Horowitz, Ray Gerber, and Doug Friedrichs and junior Bob Socci. 163 COUGARS THRILL ONLOOKERS: Below, right: Coach Fred Booth. Mermaids Rival Mermen The women of the world have finally gone too far. First it was women’s suffrage. Then the pants. And now the girls have started a swim team at Columbia. Under the direction of Captain Linda Benson, the 24 girls this year strove to gain official recognition for the team. Unfortunately, state laws limited the team’s activities, but they did schedule three dual meets. The Mermaids beat Hackensack by 2 points and lost to Montclair on two oc- casions. The meets were highlighted by Debby Rentz, swimming butterfly and free- style; Jane Musky, freestyle; Jackie Spear, breaststroke; and Patty Spear, backstroke. Swimmers concluded their ’69-70 sea- son with a ten and two record, losing twice to the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Champions, Westfield. Led by co-captains Atis Jurka and Steve DeVinny, the Mermen captured a third place in the Essex County Championships and second in the State Meet. Eric Pearl, John Cooney, Steve Greer, and Dave Waldman broke the state record for the individual medley and Danny Goble broke the state record in the 100 yard freestyle. Dave Wald- man, who swam the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, won two individual awards in the County Cham- pionship. The Mermen were strong in all events. Senior Steve Greer, a freestyler for the past two years, became the team’s butterfly specialist. Eric Pearl swam backstroke in the individual medley and re- lay events while Dave Turnbull filled the second man position. Breast stroke was handled by John Cooney, a strong swimmer who could always be relied upon to take a needed first. Ben Mack, Steve DeVinny, and Barry Korner all swam the difficult 400 freestyle. Unfortunately Zach Spie- wak, who proved his ability in the breast stroke and individual medley last year, was unable to swim during most of the season due to illness. The high point of the season was the 58-28 victory over Somerville, followed by an involuntary, fully dressed swim by the team’s secretary Jo-Anne Chasnow and Coach Dave Yoresh. 166 THE 1970 MERMEN: Top, Marty Kromer, Joe Anderson, Byron Chiger, Steve DeVinny, Atis Jurka, Ben Mack, Barry Korner, David Turnbull. Injuries and weight prob- lems reduced the effectiveness of the varsity team, preventing them from wrestling up to their poten- tial. In the District Meet, however, the wrestlers were at full strength and placed second in the competition. Only the outstanding talent of the Se- ton Hall wrestlers kept Columbia from victory. Se- nior co-captains Greg Pouliot and Larry Smotroff took first place honors in the District Meet. Other District champions were senior Steve Bartholomew and sophomore Jeff Metzger. Bartholomew and Greg Pouliot, another senior, posted the best dual meet records of 10-2 and 11-1, respectively. Wrestlers who completed their last year for coach Al Hector were Smotroff, Pouliot, Bartholomew, Art Pirone, George Garno, Mike Aufierio, John Poulous, and Tom Zemkawsky. 170 Cougar Grapplers Outstanding In Districts THE 1970 GRAPPLERS: Top, Scott Allison. I, Gayle McArthur, leave to Mr. Maddox all my questions, comments, challenges, and criticisms. I, Tim Willard, leave despite the numerous cries of “encore” from my friends. I, Sharon Byer, leave to Mr. Amsden a copy of the book “Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me”. I, John Kardys, leave with a profound knowledge and everlasting memory of my Chemistry teacher — good old Mr. . . . What’s his name? I, Emanuel Kapelsohn, leave to Mr. Meddaugh one worn out pass to “A Quiet Place”. I, Darren Edson, leave to Mr. Pantazes his traffic committee, his point system, and Spiro Agnew. May they all end up like his car. We, Homeroom 206, leave 6 used homeroom teachers. I, Jill Movshin, leave cheerleading, the Vice-Presidency, being the first C.H.S. majorette, and everything else I ever tried for, to another loser. I, Ann Rothberg, leave Mr. Brown with his love for circular reasoning. I, John Poulos, leave as Poulous, Paulos, Paulas, Poolus, Pulis, or any other way they’ve misspelled my name. I, Jeanne Applegate, leave my garter, sore throats, shaker, and raccoon coat to next year’s coat girl. I, Willie Symes, promise to leave the C.H.S. staff in peace of mind if I graduate. We, Mr. Eisenberg’s period 3 class, leave him 12 series of last year’s stag films. We, the Stage and Light Crew of 1970, leave Mr. F. Trent NOTHING — except: One lighting board in dis- repair, two frayed ropes holding up the stage, and one retarded crew. We, Cathy Furst and Barbara Scher, leave Mr. Price Spain — and we hope he gets there soon. We, Chris Carswell, Linda Rhodes and Meredith Young, leave Mr. Eisenberg two broken thermometers, 1 melted funnel, 3 ruined test tubes, 1 broken door, a flooded bunsen burner, spilled acid, and wall-to-wall yarn. We, Period 3 U.S. History Class, leave Mr. E. Everett Kline an original source entitled So What by Why Echo and a pacifier. We, Terri Fiocca, Ginny Tracey, and Joanne Amoresano, leave our parking space on Academy Street to any junior who cares to come at 6:00 A.M. We, The Senior Boys, leave the Sophomore and Junior Girls to next year’s Senior boys. We, the Senior Girls, leave with prospects of a better future. I, David Smilow, leave all those essential items like green slips, tardy passes, late passes, and locked bath- room doors to all those essential people who need them. We, Laurie and Jess, leave two lollypops to Mr. Pantazes. 215 About This Edition Of The Mirror Miss Patricia O’Hanlon, Editorial Advisor Paul Brenner, Editor-In-Chief Mr. Edwin Faust, Business Advisor Dan Manzi, Business Manager Andy Brafman Mindy Berson John Conaway Karen Farley Louis Gutentag Marc Hanfling Joseph Leven David Muldberg Carol Price Amy Slavitt Nancee Tobin Karen Weiss Robin Bernstein, Layout Editor Amy Black, Linda Guarduci Diane Rubin Lois Weinstein Rick Maslow, Art Editor Terri Harrison, Activities Events Editor Steve German Linda Schwartzstein Ann Rothberg Jeff Cruikshank Chris Holleran THE YEARBOOK 13: Front, Dan Manzi, Terri Harrison and Sue Rich. The realization of this book is due mainly to the ideas and dedication of the editors and staff. However, for each staff member mentioned on the roster there is at least one other person who devoted his time to the book without thought of recognition. Space does not allow me to thank each of these people in print, but I would like to express my personal thanks and appreciation to the following: Mr. Wynne Murchison, our American Yearbook Company representative, who always was available, either by phone or in person, when- ever we needed his advice. Mr. Marvin Gershenfeld, Mr. Richard Gross, and the rest of the staff at Richard’s Studio, for their help with all our photographic problems and for their ability to process film almost in- stantaneously. Mr. Virgil Spencer, Cambridge Plant Manager of American Yearbook Company, for his “un- compromising” help and guidance over the year. My Parents, who donated to the staff their dining room table and refrigerator during the ten weeks when the going was roughest. Mrs. Charlotte Mathias and Mrs. Doris Fitz- simmons, who always willingly helped us with announcments, names, addresses, and the mail. The staff of the Columbian for allowing us to use parts of their paper, and for their advice on headlines. Sue Rich, who filled in as Drama Editor while Judy was in Paris, typed a great deal of the copy, for the book, and helped during every planning session. David Reed and Meredith Young who spent several Sundays helping the staff with proof- reading, layout, and the like. There is no doubt that this book represents the the “New Image” we advertised in the beginning of the year. The new format of “The People — “The Year” has given more freedom to carefully balance the book as both a creative work and a permanent record of the year’s events and the people who made them.
