PALMINTERI Editorial Advisor EDWIN FAUST Business Advisor RONNIE DURCHLAG Editor-in-Chiej Page Ten WATSON JAMES Business Manager SENIORS 1962 daSS J4htor 1959-1960 y A bevy of apprehensive smiles entered the halls of Columbia on that bright Sep- tember morn in 1959. Our sophomore year was filled with many new sights and impres- sions. Of course, the orientation program played an important part in the early weeks of our first year at Columbia. Upperclassmen permitted us to cheer at the football games and taught us how to clean the tables in the cafeteria. Triple lunches, omitted periods, split studies, all served to confuse us and forced many cowardly students to long for the quiet security of junior high. New opportunities in the form of exciting subjects, clubs and varsity sports pleasantly burdened our already complicated schedules. As we cheered the Cougars on to victory, we mumbled the unfamiliar rhymes and mouthed the words of the Alma Mater. However, the perceptive Sophomore Class soon learned that thy motto is our motto and our cry, ’Excelsior!’ ” The girls worshipped the suave, sophisticated senior boys, who seemed so far beyond their reach; the boys worked hard to attain eligibility for varsity teams. Columbia offered a new world, both academically and socially; and as we extended our greedy fingers to catch each drop of experience, we optimistically anticipated our eventful junior year. 1960-1961 Confidently the mighty juniors returned to the hallowed halls of CHS. We could bully” the silly sophs and laugh at their bewildered expressions, positive that we had never been guilty of the same mistakes. However, our inflated egos were depressed when confronted with the P.S.A.T.’s, a forecast of future problems. But our worries were tem- porarily cast aside as our Junior Night production overshadowed all the other exciting events of our intermediate year. Cowboys and Oklahoma belles, bedecked in shirts with stenciled surreys, trooped up to Gruning’s en masse at dawn. The lucky few who had their licenses obligingly piled the poor pedestrians into their cars and drove through the town honking and singing. More and more of us received our licenses, permitting us to progress to our senior year even faster if not more safely. 1961-1962 From the day we entered school in the fall to the day on which the last letter of acceptance arrived and our final plans were made, almost every experience of our senior year hinged on college. S.A.T. scores, Achievements, catalogues, and writing samples were the words on each frantic lip. If popularity were measured by visitations, Mr. Thompson, Mr. Fleming, and Miss della Sala would have won a prize. Senior boys no longer captured the interest of the girls—the suave, sophisticated heroes of the youngsters were our classmates. Classes were a challenge, each teacher preparing us for the world ahead. An honor study program went into effect, our football co-captain was named to the All State Team, and we played host to several foreign exchange students. Mr. James Hopkins, who for many years capably headed the Departments of Industrial Arts and Driver Education, retired from the faculty. Once again Columbia was evaluated and accredited by a committee of educators appointed by the Middle Atlantic States Associa- tion. At last it was our Coat Girl and our Cougar who presided at the games. We were the big guys”, yet we discovered to our chagrin that we still had a long way to go on our road to adulthood. Although we didn’t feel different or look different when we graduated in June, we were different. We will always remember and be grateful for the wonderful times, the friends, and the knowledge we acquired at Columbia; and we will travel on, bent on bigger but never better things. Page Eighty-one ecy The dream island is in the blue Caribbean — a tropical heaven surrounded by deep, clear water; the place is, of course, Puerto Rico. It is mid-November, and the island is in a very festive mood. Elections have just been held; and the new governor, Alberto Ibarguen, is holding a huge victory celebration. His lavish mansion on the hill is full of celebrities from all over the world who have gathered to congratulate the prominent politician. The first thing that comes into view when approaching the party from the road is the parking lot. AI Menner’s Jaguar XVJ ’77 outclasses the rows of Cadillacs. At the entrance to the mansion is a long line of well wishers. Mary Weber, Miss Va Voom of ’62 to ’77 is there surrounded by other dazzlers, Joan Rabiner, Karen Krupnick and Monnie Deubel. Flirting with the beauties are crooners Evan Maurer and Alan Rosen- feld. Under a nearby shade tree are Bob Slater, Elli Resnik, Steve Bello and Judy Kaye, world philosophers and scholars all, discussing the values of life while they enjoy an integrated picnic lunch. Inside the palace more people are seen enjoying the sumptuous meal provided by Richard Plotkin’s cater- ing service and cocktails from the Conway-Lotz brewery — the boys found it cheaper to make it themselves. The music which fills the air is being provided by Richard (Killer-Crash) Kaunitz on the horn, Steve Koller at the keyboard, and Barry Ottenstein under the big guitar. The entire affair was planned by the world famous hostess Judy Stone. The reunited Cougar Hop Committee must have helped her plan this, for it’s really a swinging affair.” George Montgomery and Elizabeth Yaciw just started twisting on top of the table — go, Liz! In one corner is the entire company of Broadway’s new, not quite smash, musical New Jersey. It was written by Mark Kupperman, based on a book by Louise Basch, based on a poem by Nancy Kaney, based on the life of Carol Feder. The cast included Kathi Perri, as an aspiring diva, and Gary Arpin, as a tough guy who tries to ruin her life; but Phil Eagan comes, just in time, and saves all. The play is produced by John Beam, staged by Rich Ash, danced by Ludi Jackowenko, and sung by Maxine Kupperman. It is currently being staged at the Statman Theater in New York. Dave Tishman bought the movie rights. The huge hall quiets to a dull roar as the first guest speaker gets up to honor Alberto. A famous writer- philanthropist, best noted for the book Honesty is the Best Study, is being heard clearly through the hall be- cause of the electronic genius of Joe (the lover) Garodnick, and his speaker system. Noting Dee Kosh and the entire party are Ronnie Durchlag and Mark Rosenberg, known for their magazine Looking Glass. Newspapers are represented also. Lew Yecies is here, editor of The London Times; and so is Kathie Sladek, society editor of the Daily News. Steve Weisbart is here from Sport to cover the finals of the annual International Co-Ed Water Ping-Pong finals between Sue Ormond and Richard Bailey. Also from the sports world is the attorney for the Green Bay Packers, Bob Dunphey. He used to play, but found law a more lucrative profession. Dee is finished speaking, and as Alberto rises to thank her, he casually buttons his jacket with one hand. Then Peter Karassik comes skipping down the middle of the hall, fumbling for his famous book GRONK AND NOT GONK. Behind Pete in the driveway come Ed Hunoval and Judy Becker in the only Caddie in the world with four-wheel drive. Behind them are those two playboy pals, Jeff Model and Richard Engel. A crowd is gathering outside to watch the passing of the satelite Explorer CLII, another step closer to the moon in the race for space. Jerry Snow and Ken Verosub, who are both here, are the designers of the craft. Jerry came to Puerto Rico to hear the annual Knapp-Nagel debates. This years judges are Larry Lorre and Dan Meany. Another celebrity here is Barbara Black, author of My Many Lost Loves. She says it is a book based on information supplied by Elizabeth Scheffler. Pookie,” as she was called, has settled down and now has a lovely family and seventeen kids. David Baraff has just risen to take an uncalled curtain call. Just as he steps forward, a cheer arises from one of the center tables. Steve Nislick has just won a six horse parlay at Pimlico, the track now owned by Tyce Palmaffy. At the same table is Les Agism, famed high school gym teacher. Les has been teaching sopho- more gym for a good many years now. Another cheer is given for Jay Woodbury who just arrived in Puerto Rico after being the first man to win a cross-country race from Florida. He beat Jim Meier and Pete Tepperman, who tried to swim the distance. Nancy Vail was the neutral judge. Both she and Jay came to see Sue Ormond become the first woman water ping-pong champion. Bill Burck is also here with his lawyer Barry Siegel. Barry is defending Bill against the able district at- torney, Dave Balsam. The suit concerns something Bill said after losing a polo match by one point. Inside, Marsha Collins is playing Cho-Cho to get the attention of someone important, but Alix Flanigan and Bob Carter are stealing the show. They are repeating the performance that won for them the twist championship of the world. As night falls over the Caribbean the gala celebration continues at full swing, as more guests of the highest social standing on the mainland begin to arrive. One of the most charming guests to arrive is the world famous PLAYBOY model, Dale Frieman. Jan O’Handley arrived, but for the past three hours she has been pounding on the floor yelling, Beat ’em boys, Beat ’em boys,” all in vain. Across the crowded hall we notice one of the nation’s best known business men. Ken Huggins, with his ability in button pushing and buzzer sounding, has managed to buv the New York Subway System. Also rep- resenting the business world is Watson James (James Watson?), the greatest executive without a company. Tom Campbell and Rick Crossman are mixing something again. The two boys once made their labora- tory immortal by totally demolishing it. Now they are working from the lab notes of Frank Tarrant and Richard Masin. If the party is viewed from a distance, it becomes quite evident that it will last for at least a thousand years. However, there are a few things left that give hope. Ginny Gross lost her license but not her friends; Nancy Zimmerman is still Don Bermont’s neighbor; Jerry Palmieri has just hit the athletic Joan Bowman with a golf club; Bluebeard has just won back four of the five million he lost in head-on poker with Rick Wallace. To think they all went to the same high school! LLOYD BROWNING Let’s travel back a year to the Junior Night of the class of '62. We arrive, in our Surrey with the Fringe on Top;” in the musical sta e of Oklahoma, where feuds and gunfights reigned until we settled them. It was the class of '62 that decided that The Farmer and the Cowboy should be Friends,” and the chief peace makers responsible for this marvelous act were Gary Arpin as Curley and Noel Parks as Will Parker. Kathie Perri as Laurie and Jan O’Handley as Ado Annie pro- vided moral support” and guidance for our cowboys. This production was the highlight of our Junior year. Page One Hundred Four Page One Hundred Five Jlie of? January 16th DIRECTED BY J. LLOYD BROWNING The senior play of the class of ’62 took us from the halls of Columbia to the Supreme Court of the State of New York where we were to learn the events which took place on The Night of January 16th.” It was the trial of Karen Andre, and we, the class, as the jury and spectators, had to decide whether or not Miss Andre was guilty of the murder of Bjorn Faulkner. As we entered the jury box (our seat), we looked around and saw District Attorney Flint, acted by John Re- velle, and Defense Attorney Stevens, Tommy Lee, talking to their secretaries. Seated next to Stevens was Miss Andre, the defendant, who was superbly portrayed by Robyn Goldstein. After a long and serious deliberation, no matter what the verdict, we had to admit that this was a wonderful production and one that will always be remembered with pride. Page One Hundred Six Directed by F. FREDERICK TRENT For the first annual all-school musical production, the sophomore, junior and senior classes joined together to put on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I. Also for the first time, three performances of the show were given. The first cast, featuring Watson James as the King and Nancy Weinberg as Anna, was seen on Friday and Saturday evenings. In the Saturday matinee performance Mike Wilkinson played the role of the King and Andrea Silvers portrayed Anna. Students from Fielding Elementary School were the royal children. Once in Siam, we entered the beautiful and well- constructed palace and saw the King giving orders to his many wives and children. In just a few moments Anna entered and the play began. By the end of this musical, the entire cast had won both the hearts and the praise of the audience. 2) oor DIRECTED BY J. LLOYD BROWNING From the musical state of Oklahoma we travel to New York City for the Junior night of the class of ’63. Once we reach the city limits we catch a subway to the Stage Door” and the problems of all young actresses in New York City. The joys and sorrows of these ambitious, but sometimes unsuccessful young women, were portrayed by Lolly Shattuck, Carolyn Wendel, and Harriet Reisen. Judy Ruffman played the role of the house mother of these aspiring actresses. The male parts were portrayed by Mike Wilkinson, an un- inspired Hollywood director and Paul Bressman played Keith Burgess, a would-be playwright. This play was enjoyed by both the audience and the members of the cast. ' Page One Hundred Ten SAemblieA irnuMv Page One Hundred Twelve Orchestra: Directed by Mr. Paul T. The cross country team, State Champions in I960, again proved to be outstanding, win- ning both the Big Ten and the Essex County Meets. After completing a highly successful dual meet campaign, Columbia’s harriers took third place in the State Meet. The soccer team, in its first season of varsity competition, demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm and skill, winning four games and losing several others by close scores. The foot- ball team, highly rated before the season began, suffered several narrow defeats and ended the season with a record of four wins and four losses. The season produced an out- standing player, quarterback Bob Dunphey, who was awarded All-State honors. Prospects are good for next year, with a host of lettermen returning to fill the shoes of the departing seniors. In the winter sports the Cougar Wrestlers proved to be the exceptional team, with a record of nine wins and only one loss in dual meet competition. They also fared well in the Districts, taking a close second place behind a powerful Union team. In the Regional Championship Meet, Columbia was able to place four men. Of these, only one, Howie Kestenbaum, advanced to the State Finals where he was runner-up for the title. The swimming team, not quite as strong as anticipated, had a record of eight wins and three losses and took fourth place in the State Meet. Several outstanding natators will return next season, including record-breakers Nate Lessin and Dave Cossman, co-captains elect. The basketball (earn rebounded from a poor season last year to post a good record of ten wins and eight losses. Although the team will miss high-scoring Jack Conway and captain Richie Masin, there will still be several lettermen that should make next year’s team even stronger. The 1961 baseball team, with only five lettermen returning, did not have the record they hoped for, but with several lettermen the squad should have a better season in 1962. The golf and tennis teams had successful seasons; and prospects are good for 1962 although Roger Flax, outstanding team captain, will be sorely missed. The track team will also miss seniors Ron Wiss and Dick Drake who led the team to a good season. However, several capable boys are returning, including Jim Tornillo, Jay Woodbury, co-captains elect and Sam Fortunato. On the whole, it was another good year for Columbia in the sports circles; and it must be said that the success could not have been completely achieved with- out student and faculty support. If, in future years of varsity competition, Columbia demonstrates the same de- sire to win and the same skill and enthusiasm that it showed in the 1961-1962 season, it must remain on the victory trail. Middle row, left to right: Manager Richard Donniez, assistant coach Jack Fletcher, Ed Amster, John Hoffman, Jeff Schwartz, Robert Meyers, Gordon Burns, Bob Richwood, Ken Rosevear, Len Bierstein, Glen Brown, Mike Hyatt, Richard Coppola, Tony Cappaze, Joe Siman, Richard Skillman. The loss in the opening game to a perennially strong Plainfield squad dimmed all hopes. However, the team rebounded well and defeated both the Morristown and Orange teams. Then the gridders ran into the two top teams in the state. Both games were very close and we were on the short end both times. After soundly defeating the Kearny squad, the team lost to a powerful East Orange team after a nip-and-tuck battle. In the last game, Columbia romped over their traditional rival West Orange. Although the record was only 4-4 the team representing Columbia was a strong one, and with a few breaks, the record could easily have been 7-1 or 8-0. Co-captain Bob Dunphey culminated a tremendous season when he was named to the All- State backfield. Other players who did fine jobs were: co-captain Bob Crowley, Rich Masin, Evan Maurer, Bill Burck, Sam Fortunato, Tom Tracey, co-captain elect Mike Cirasella and Stan Constantin. The team has a strong nucleus of fifteen lettermen returning, and the 1962 team should be a good one. Page One Hundred Twenty-Six Left to right standing-. The team captured the Big Ten title for the sixth straight year and also won the Essex County title for the fourth year out of the last five. Co.-captain Jay Woodbury ran well all year, culminating his fine season with a second place in the Big Ten Meet and a fourth place in the Essex County meet. Co- captain Dick Graham, Reggie Brown, and Juniors John Payne and John Hill also gave outstanding performances. The Junior Varsity team continued its undefeated string for the fifth straight year with a record of 9-0. Thus the cross country team, under Coach Tom Weiner’s direction, again emerged from a hard season true to its usual superior form. The strength of the team was shown by its very close defeats by several of the State’s power- houses. The booters,” under Mr. Holmok’s guid- ance, manifested their enthusiasm throughout the season. Leading the squad were co-captains Jon Clemmensen and Steve O’Keefe. Jon Clemmensen was awarded an honorable mention on the all-state team. The 1961 soccer team in its first varsity en- deavor, showed that Columbia is a potential power in this sport. In addition to winning eight dual meets and losing only three, the Cougar natators placed fourth in the state meet at Princeton. In doing so, many new school records were set in- cluding a new medley relay record, a new back- stroke record by Junior Nate Lessin, and a new diving record by Junior Bob Livermore. Although several key performers such as captain Jim Meier and Dick Bailey are graduating, there will be many lettermen back next year to try to bring the state swimming crown back to Columbia. However, due to a number of close losses during the season, the record turned out to be only slightly better than .500. This record was achieved in a tough league, and the team showed touches of brilliance at various points during the season. The team’s outstanding player turned out to be Jack Conway, who averaged close to 17 points per game. Other top players were Captain Richie Masin, Jim Altengarten, the top rebounder, Steve Novick, second highest scorer, Sid Feldman, and Dave Lowenstein. Although the team will miss the scoring and rebounding power that Masin and Conway have supplied, the prospects are bright for next year with Feldman, Lowenstein, Novick, Altengarten, and 6'4 John Payne returning to form the nucleus of a potentially strong team. The season included victories over Plainfield and Spring field Regional, perenially strong teams. Perhaps the real test of a team’s strength is the district champion- ships in which Columbia won four out of twelve events and placed in many others, compiling a score of 42 points and being edged out of first place by Union by a mere three points. District champions for Columbia were co-captain George Montgomery, George Stanton, Robert Terry, and Howie Kestenbaum, who went on to the regional crown and finished second in the state meet. The prospects for next year’s team look very good. From the 98-lb. class to the 135-lb. class all but one varsity man are returning. In the upper weight classes several men, including Montgomery, Stanton, Wacker, Maurer, and heavyweight Jim Chenitz, will be missed but there are several capable boys coming up from the undefeated Junior Varsity team to take their places. Hats off to Coach Don Griesel and his mighty grapplers! Page One Hundred Thirty-one $UJM First row left to right'. Unable to combine hitting with fielding at the right times, Columbia started its season poorly, losing the first eight games. The last part of the season saw a slight improvement on the part of the Cougars, and they managed to win three games, losing several others by very close scores. The highlights of the season were Columbia’s victory over highly-ranked Mont- clair, and the overwhelming of West Orange by a score of 13-2. Some of the outstanding players were captain Charlie Ziegler, Bruce Moore, Mike Balis, an all-county selection, Mike Cirasella, and pitchers Howie Klein and Pete O’Brien. Although Columbia will lose a few key performers, the majority of the squad will return to put Columbia on the winning side of the ledger again. Page One Hundred Thirty-two Bottom row left to right: Eric Tennenbaum, Evan Katz, Gerald Palmieri, John Begasse. Top row left to right: Steve Nislick, Dave Yankowitz, co-captain Roger Freeman, John Cramer, Coach George B. Pontz. 1961 After losing to arch-rival West Orange, at the beginning of the season, the 1961 Golf Team re- bounded well and finished their competition with a record of nine wins, three losses, and two ties. Ac- counting for this fine record were co-captains Roger Freeman and Joe Nichols, Gerry Palmieri, Dave Yankowitz, John Kramer, Steve Nislick, John Begasse and Eric Tennenbaum. The 1962 team has the potential to better this year’s admirable record with several veterans returning. Among these will be co-captains-elect Dave Yankowitz and Gerry Palmieri, of whom much will be expected next year and from whom leadership must come to make the 1962 Columbia Golf Team as outstanding as those in the past. After losing the final two meets of the season, Columbia’s Track Team entered the big meets and proved quite er- ratic. The team placed third in the Essex County Meet with Captain Ronny Wiss taking a second in the 440, Michael Shanahan a second in the 880, Jim Tornillo a fourth in the broad jump, Pete Sigmann, a fifth in the javelin, and Joe Papp and Dick Drake tying for first place in the pole vault. In the State Meet, on a rainy day, the only scorers for Columbia were Jay Woodbury, who placed fifth in the 880, and Papp and Skip Mead who, breaking the school record, tied for second place in the pole vault. Although next year the team will miss many fine competitors like Wiss, Papp, Mead, and Drake, there will be a strong nucleus for an outstanding team left consisting of Woodbury and Tornillo, co- captains, Sam Fortunato and Bob Ritchwood, weight- men, Steve O’Keefe in the hurdles; and Ed Peters in the high jump. Jeam The 1961 tennis team, coached by Mr. Kerr, had an extremely fine season. The Cougars were lead by an outstanding captain, Roger Flax, who played in the first singles position. John Daily and Robert Rosenhaus formed a very powerful pair and played in the first doubles slot. While leading the team to a record of thirteen wins and only one loss, these two positions remained undefeated. At the finish of the season, the team placed fifth in the state meet at Princeton. Rounding out the starting lineup were Barry Helfmann and Steve Koller playing singles, and Larry Rosenthal and Bill Mieth as a doubles team. With several returning lettermen, the squad can look forward to another successful season in 1962. Page One Hundred Thirty-five Standing Left to right-.
