He is important not just because he rep- resents our school, but also because he represents the spirit that throughout our three years at Columbia has bound us together, and made us as one in anything that relates to school. He is our tie with all those who have long since graduated from Columbia, for the spirit that he symbolizes was the same in 1928, and 1938, as it is now in 1948; the one thing that we have in common with everyone, everywhere who ever went to Columbia, is the Cougar. He is the spirit of Columbia, and he represents for all of us all the happy memories, the good times, the hard work, the joy and sadness, the football games, the baseball games, and the other athletic contests, which will forever recall to us our high school years, and re- mind us that these were, indeed, the “best years of our lives”. ulitor-in-Chief Donald Rech Associate Editor Nancy Palmer Business Manager Theodore Straight iJministra lion CURTIS H. MacWright Vice-President (Fatherin'k Schneider Our Ihm year in Columbia High School is rapidly drawing to a close, and soon the joys and sorrows that we. the members of the class of 1918. have known here, will become memories. Even now, though the past war is remote to us, we are to be rememberd as the first full ( lass to enter and gradu- ate from Columbia in the initial three years of peace following the war. Many Columbia students whom we did not know died in order to secure for us that peace: and now, at last, we are ready to repay them, by preserving it. These past three years have been filled with un- forgettable experiences. We are not likely to for- get that first year, our sophomore year, when we finally hit the big time.” We were easily recog- nizable by the trusty Highlights we carried with us constantly, and by our awed and bewildered ex- pressions, so characteristic of sophomores. We im- mediately joined clubs and committees, our talent manifested itself in the Sophomore Dramatic Club productions, and when, for the first time, we sat in the cheering section at Underhill Field, we be- came an integral part of Columbia. We viewed with equal enthusiasm the basketball and baseball games which followed until, before we knew it, exams were upon us. The long awaited summer vacation passed quickly and we returned to school assuming the role of the studious junior. No longer lowly sophs”, we immersed ourselves in studies in order to attain that seemingly un- attainable average which would assure our accep- tance in college. Our talent was again displayed in that off spring of the Pre Junior Night Committee, “Time and Tide”, which broke all previous records by demanding a third performance. With a wonder- fid musical score, a French girl, and an American boy, chcrchczing la femme , plus many complica- tions, the show was worthy of its acclaim. Then, alter weeks of spirited campaigning, came the school elections which were followed in June by the graduation of the senior class and many sad farewells to graduating friends. Finally, September, and we were seniors! We easily acclimated ourselves to this lofty position, and soon were busily engaged, in contrast to our junior year, in a multitude of obligations and extra- curricular activities. Appointments had to be made for yearbook pictures, the planing of the Mirror began immediately, the Senior Play Reading Com- mittee assumed its responsibilities, applications had to be sent to the various colleges. College Board Examinations taken, and college conferences at- tended. As our last class production, we offered Edna Fcrbcr and George Kaufman’s Stage Door, and the show, with its comparatively large cast and complicated plot, was extremely well received. Finally, in this, our last year, there have been many innovations in Columbia: the acceptance of girl cheerleaders and twirlcrs, the procurement of new band uniforms, and lastly, the introdution of music into the cafeteria during lunch periods. The activities mentioned on this page cannot accurately reflect the spirit of these past three years. Before the picture is complete, consideration must be given to the friendships that have been culti- vated. the knowledge gained, and the happiness that lias been ours here. 6 JOAN ABRAMS 130 Wyoming Avenue South Orange Junior Night Properties Committee; Senior Play Properties Committee; (i.A.A.; Pan-Ameri- can Club; Junior Night Chorus; Sophomore Dramatic Club. As we stand outside and ga c at our beloved school, large drops stream down our faces. (It is raining.) However, as we stand here with only a Latin book to cover our heads, we know how little we realized the number of opportunities that were available to us when we first entered these portals. Why, besides the regu- lar curriculum we could enjoy any number of clubs or organizations. Remember those member- ship-drive slogans? “Get Rich Quick — Join the Finance Committee!” Learn How to Slander in Four Easy Lessons at the Lyceum!” Or, Every- body Can Join the G. A. A.!” (This one produced some mighty embarrassing moments.) But now let us review the accomplishments of the class of i4H. Our sophomore year — how close it still seems to us (because we haven't got mentally very far away from it)! Remember our first year of geometry, when we learned that parallelograms weren't tele- grams, and that a hyjxnenuse wasn’t an African animal. There were several dramatic productions, too, and among them was the Sophomore Drama- tic Club play, which, of course, all seniors snubbed. How those seniors took it out on us Sophs! That reminds us of a story: One day a large elephant came u|xm an under- sized mouse. “Boy, you're small,” said the elephant. “Why, you're the most insignificant thing I've ever seen.” “Yeah, 1 know,” said the mouse. “I’ve been sick.” So let us now pass on to our junior year, and its greater advancements. And what did Shakespeare have to offer now? More people got killed in Mac- beth than in Julius Caesar. And remember Junior Night — the only show with threec performances? I'hey couldn’t believe it the first two times. Then, at the end of the junior year came the elections for school officers. “Elect Mackenzie and he’ll tell you why he switched to another brand.” Finally, we arrive at our senior year. In Hamlet more people got killed than in Macbeth. Now that we were seniors, we thought we'd have the best seats at the senior play; if we had been given a scat one more row back we could have helped collect tickets. But the senior year brought innovations: a new coach, new band uniforms, girl cheerleaders, girl twirlers. and — new girls. Then there was the distinction of being in the integrated class (the in- telligent group, you know). Take for example, this scene in the library: One pupil who had been looking in a book of statistics turned to another and said, “Do you know that every time I breathe a man dies?” That’s interesting,” was the reply, “Why don’t you try Sen-Sen?” As we come to the end of our senior year, we arc faced with the problem of college entrance. This problem is made more confusing by the rc- ejuired tests. College Bored tests! Some of the ques- tions which appeared have had the most surprising answers. For instance, on the geography exam we found: “Where is Chicago?” Answer: “Nearly at the bottom of Lake Michigan.” Or “Where is Den- ver?” Answer: “Beneath the middle o in Colorado. On the biology exam was the cjuestion, “Why is a fish? Answer: “Because one of its legs is both the same.” So now as we walk away from the entrance of Columbia, and as we balance the NO PARKING sign for the last time, we are reminded of the im- mortal Shakespeare. As Romeo said in his farewell speech to Juliet, in Act III, scene 2: “Farewell.” That’s a joke, son. 60 (Class Mill Wc. the graduating class ol 1948. departing to tread the path that Columbia hast taught us , tearfully discard our Magruders and gym bloomers (which. Jentor 'I he year 1958............It had Ixren ten years since I had last set f«x t in Columbia High's hallowed halls. You can imagine my surprise when I received an invitation to attend a Class of 1948” dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. After donning my light tan pin-striped cutaway and green ascot, I set out, with great expectations, for the Wal- dorf. When I got there I was refused entrance, because all I was wearing was my cutaway and ascot. After remedying this situation, I once more set out for the hotel.’This time I was admitted. At once 1 was ushered into the main ballroom by a page boy whom I later found out was Malcolm MacK.cn ic- (his party had lost the recent elections). As I entered, I noticed that Joy Hayes, a famous Conover model at last, was wearing the new 1958 look — saddle shoes, skirt, and sweater. At the bar I was heartily thuui| cri on the back by Chuck howdy partner Kocmcr who had become one of the biggest cattle owners in the West. He told me that his partner. Stu Mcrz couldn’t attend Irccausc he was having trouble with a heifer on the ranch. Music was being supplied by l)oug Eliot Lawrence Williams and his Sophisticated Men of Rhythm: Skin Mccdcr on baritone sax. John slippery lips Skudris on trumpet. Eddy thumper” Paul on l ss, and Walt Layer on straight pipes. I mean, tenor sax. I spoke to Doug and he told me that Led Smith was breaking it up at the Onyx Club on fifty-second street. Irene Guest was not at the party Ixxausc of the open- ing of her new show Follow the Boys . Over in a corner 1 saw John Bugsy Ward and George I don't ever win! Wells playing five card stud. I found out that lie and John were owners of the blackjack concession at the N'cw Jersey World's Fair. At the bar again, I met Clark loose-joint MacWright. He showed me the business card of his famous.law firm. MacWright. Wright. Wright, and Adler. While we were talk- ing. Charlie the Duke Kimmcl walked by. Clark whispered to me that Charlie was the owner of a chain of nightclubs in Maplewood. He also told inc that the Statue of Lihcry was going to l c replaced by a statue of Liz Flower. The crowd was being entertained by the world famous dance team of Knicring, Van Dorn. Trimble, Pasrnan. and their managers Al Gaal and Jim Whitclaw; on the other side of the room Ann Bareli, Cathy Schneider, ami Jim Mehortcr were also providing amusement as they performed in a weight lifting contest. looking on was Steve high fella! Cox, who it was rumored, would graduate from Columbia this year — if things went right. I happened to look up at the ceiling, and there I saw Boh Klein and Don Johnson playing “I got it on the chandeliers. As I watched, I was suddenly gral l ed from Ixr- hind by Jim the hand Harrocks who was now the owner of the tip and coming Whizzer Bike Company. He was with Pete scoop” Porter, who was now a featured columnist tin page four of the Daily Sews. Next I noticed Jane Turck sitting over in a comer with Anne Hankinson. jane told me she was taking skiing les- sons from a Scotch 'champ. Anne, on the other hand, was now learning to play the trumpet. Near by a group of lioys was clustered around Joan Lindquist who was giving them a few lines from her recent show in which she was the star comedienne. prophecy While patronizing the bullet table I met Dolly Madison, Liz Libret lit, Marion Jayson, and Vicki Thomas, who were, as usual deciding what movie they would sec the following Fririav night. Just next to them, the now world famous bridge club of Anito Nyman. Dolores Cctrulc. Jean Mac Dotigall. Pat Sickley, Betty Wise, Nancy Parker. Ginny Green. Judy Veidl, Ann Bareli, anti Nancy Palmer, was open- ing its weekly session at the card table. Sneaking l ack to the bar I found Robin Roark trying to teach Jack Scott how to make a zombie, Looking on to learn Robin's technique I was kicked by Jack Milnor who was practicing Giant Swings on the bir rail. I noticed a bunch of girls standing not far from me and hurried over to speak to them — only to find Torn Hill in the center of the group. Tom was now employed as a cover model for Health anil Strength magazine. Also in the group was Colleen Bradley, now one of America’s finest young ballerinas. With her was Joan Johnston. Powers model — she models gloves. Sitting quietly to one side were Joan Rumson. Betty Mulligan. Joan Quinn, and Robin Wood. They were still waiting for the l ys to get home from col- lege. Staggering track to the bar I met eke Dare and Bob How do I do it? Spiotta. They were in a deep discussion. Bom who now owns the American Shops, was trying to sell .eke a double breasted pin stripe; eke was desperately try- ing to find out how Bob was making out with the women. Suddenly everything went black, and turning. I found that 1 bad wandered into the shadow cast by big Jim White- law now head basketball coach at Columbia. kWith him was Rul e Waldele Iretter known as LSrrry Owen Walrielc. sportswritcr for the Maplewood News. As I was reaching for the last bit of free lunch, the hand of Georgia Ralston grahltcri it first. Georgia, who was now- in league with Lamar “hi! you all Harmon to move the Capital Irekiw the Mason Dixon line, dragged me to a table, and gave me the lowdown on some of my former classmates. She told me that Bill Ott had finally taken out a girl and that he was now one of the most famous Maplewood Casan- ovas. She also mentioned that Frank Warta was now in the employ of the Alderney Dairy Farms. He moos at the cows to keep them more contented. Pat “my heart Irelongs to Georgia Moran had succeeded in swimming the Pacific Ocean at last, she told me. and added that Barbara Rein- felder. Joan Stephans, and Adcle Wcilert were now starring in the Theater Guild production of Macbeth as the three witches. While gulping down a few more drinks she told me that Lillian Harxch was now featured at the Met. I thanked Georgia for her information, and under her guid- ance made my way back to the bar on all fours. Here hanging next to me was George Pctrozcllo. a product of the Kloct cr School of Fine Arts, who was teach- ing stage lighting at Columbia now. Parting the haze of my cigarette (given me by Dave “I'm a family man Noble), I saw Fred Kapp coming through the door. Stanley Amsterdam, who was now running a marriage bureau told me that Fred had Ixrcomc head of Wriglcy Chewing Gum Inc. It was getting late, and I had to leave, so I bade my former classmates a fond adieu. As I was carried out of the ballroom which was now a shambles, I thought to myself that there never had Ixren. and never would l e. a class like good old 1948. 68 John Thompson reasure i iimlfkr Chairut .obert Fiflintahi '•Acuity Adviser f iss Ziclenbarh x esinent fcyrofcjl Donald icY President fiithia liarius Kcretary kw Jo Marcv easurer b Lanes im Chairman Vbcwty Adviser 4r. A. Each of our three years in Columbia held many high sjK)ts in the G. A. A. but the last year was by far the best. We started the year with a big initiation and welcoming party for the sophomores. The first sport of the year was rough and tumble soccer, and then we were soon in the swim with the ever popular swimming team. “Time out was called for the big Christ- mas party. With two Santas, the party could not help being the success it was. Then we turned our attention to the badminton tournament, which lasted for several months. This new tournament proved popular and produced champs in each of the three classes. Soon we put our hands on the basketball and turned our eyes to the baskets. Then we moved on to the next sport, which was volleyball. In the spring, we went into the pool again for life saving and then into the fresh air, batting and catching softballs. Once again this year the Dance Club con- tributed largely to the success and popu- larity of the G. A. A. The biggest and best event of the year, the Awards Party, toward which we had all worked, brought to a close the finest ol three grand years in the Ci. A. A.
