President William Xissen We, the members of the first full class of Columbia High School to graduate during the past five years in a nation at peace, are truly fortunate. We no longer have to face a world racked with war, a world cursed with dying men and starving babies. We go into a world at last in peace. When we look back and see how many Columbia graduates fought in that war, and how many died to end it, we are humbled. Still, there is other im- portant work for us, because we shall have to keep the peace for those who fought to achieve it. We may justly be proud of our school’s record of war-time accomplishments. Columbia’s fine ac- celeration program enabled many students, now in college or one of the services, to leave school with a diploma; and much credit belongs to the faculty members who gave up their vacations to teach dur- ing the long summer months. Xow it seems fitting that we should review what has passed in our three years in Columbia. We felt the sadness of our President’s death when he passed away a short time before the finish of the war he had worked so hard to end. Things predicting a new kind of future occurred. The re- lease of atomic energy, beforehand a fantasy, opened a new age for us to live in. The United Nations Conference in San Francisco gave promise of a better and peaceful world for us and our suc- cessors. The end of the war, which meant so much to all of us, finally came, and we paused for a mo- ment in grateful thanks. It will be a long time before most of us forget the exciting Satur- day afternoons we spent in the cheering section at LTiderhill Field, or the thrilling basketball games we watched, for during all the war our sports pro- gram was not halted. The teams were of the same high calibre and spirit that Columbia has always known. Our thespians have had no less success. After beginning with some entertaining Sophomore Dra- matic Club productions, we really got rolling with Fore and Aft, our Junior Night production. This musical comedy concerned a group of actors, who, after failing to find a backer for their show, obtain a river boat. The show had everything from gang- sters, glee clubs, and lovers — to mermaids. As a senior class we produced The Royal Family, by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman. A satire on the fabulous Barrymore clan, it was ranked high among all senior plays. Now as we leave Columbia, it is with a feeling rather of regret than of joy, for with our high school we leave a host of friends and a host of memories. Columbia has given us a fine education which will enable us to meet the challenge of the future, and for which we will always be grateful. With the world seeking unity and permanent peace, we feel that Columbia has prepared us better to make our individual contributions to that end.
