Not only must we rebuild war-torn cities, but also we much establish a means for world peace as we have manu- factured a plan for war. Therefore this Mirror is dedicated to those who shall rebuild the old, and you who shall construct a new and bet- ter world. 1 1 % . - I t r Seniors ......... Juniors ......... Sophomores ...... We no longer have to face a world racked with war, a world cursed with dying men and starving babies. We go into a world at last in peace. When we look back and see how many Columbia graduates fought in that war, and how many died to end it, we are humbled. Still, there is other im- portant work for us, because we shall have to keep the peace for those who fought to achieve it. We may justly be proud of our school’s record of war-time accomplishments. Columbia’s fine ac- celeration program enabled many students, now in college or one of the services, to leave school with a diploma; and much credit belongs to the faculty members who gave up their vacations to teach dur- ing the long summer months. Xow it seems fitting that we should review what has passed in our three years in Columbia. We felt the sadness of our President’s death when he passed away a short time before the finish of the war he had worked so hard to end. Things predicting a new kind of future occurred. The re- lease of atomic energy, beforehand a fantasy, opened a new age for us to live in. The United Nations Conference in San Francisco gave promise of a better and peaceful world for us and our suc- cessors. The end of the war, which meant so much to all of us, finally came, and we paused for a mo- ment in grateful thanks. Page Six V ic e-pres id en t Jacqueline Ebling Secretary Sue Grove Treasurer Don MacDougal Class Guides Miss Caswell Miss Leech HISTORY Within the activities of the school many things happened during our three years. It will be a long time before most of us forget the exciting Satur- day afternoons we spent in the cheering section at LTiderhill Field, or the thrilling basketball games we watched, for during all the war our sports pro- gram was not halted. The teams were of the same high calibre and spirit that Columbia has always known. Our thespians have had no less success. After beginning with some entertaining Sophomore Dra- matic Club productions, we really got rolling with Fore and Aft, our Junior Night production. This musical comedy concerned a group of actors, who, after failing to find a backer for their show, obtain a river boat. The show had everything from gang- sters, glee clubs, and lovers — to mermaids. As a senior class we produced The Royal Family, by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman. A satire on the fabulous Barrymore clan, it was ranked high among all senior plays. Now as we leave Columbia, it is with a feeling rather of regret than of joy, for with our high school we leave a host of friends and a host of memories. Columbia has given us a fine education which will enable us to meet the challenge of the future, and for which we will always be grateful. With the world seeking unity and permanent peace, we feel that Columbia has prepared us better to make our individual contributions to that end. Pave Sixty-Nine DONE M05T TOR THC SCHOOL MOST POPULAR SoUcr aS' Senior Play As the curtain rang down, the cast of The Royal Family heaved a sigh of relief and hurried into the gymnasium where there were waiting jars of cold cream. Above the shouts and the singing scattered remarks could be heard. '‘Well, thank heavens it’s finally over.,, “At last, some free time in the afternoon.” “No more rehearsing into the black hours of the evening.” But along with the jubilation and good natured griping, there existed the sad feeling that it was over. Each part had been developed and woven in- to a pattern under the guiding hand and watchful eye of Mrs. Miriam Furness, director, until at long last the finished production emerged. Written by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman, and based on the fabulous Barrymore family, The Royal Family has a plot full of perplexing situa- tions worthy of the Barrymores themselves. The problems of the entire Cavendish family fell upon the shoulder of Julie Cavendish (Jane Krueger), a Broadway actress. To keep her mother, Fanny (Elsbeth Wright), who was still very ill, from re- turning to the stage, Julie enlisted the aid of the family manager, Oscar Wolfe (Don Harrison). The two were presented with another problem in Herbert Dean (Bob Feely), and his wife Kitty (Gloria Snyder). The Deans, well past their prime in the acting field, made it a habit to appear at the Cavendish household when they were least wel- come. The arrival of Tony Cavendish (Kenneth Lane), Hollywood’s number one matinee idol, fur- ther complicated the situation. Further interest was supplied by Gwen (Norma Then), and Perry Stewart (Schuyler Brooks), who doesn’t at all like the idea of his wife having a career in the theatre. Bob Turton as a wealthy South American diamond merchant arrived on the scene to woo Julie, an old flame of his. Tony’s reappearance in the third act with an Indian giant, a parrot, a monkey, and a dog was really all but fantastic. The play ended as Fanny, now a great grandmother, died happy, as- sured that the name and honor of the Cavendish family in the theatre world would be carried on. Although Jane Krueger, Elsbeth Wright, Kenneth Lane and Don Harrison were outstanding, the en- tire cast is to be complimented for its fine work in making the play a success. Page Seventy-One Senior Prophecy If the reader of this article had been stand- ing at the intersection of North and Plane streets, he would have seen a small be-spectacled man push open a door marked ‘Augurers Incorporated—Two Flights Up”. Had the reader remained a few min- utes longer, he would have seen the same man emerge on the street once more, carrying a yellow manilla envelope. Inside the envelope was the doc- ument vou are about to read, written in a style such as a high school student would use. That is the true story, and I feel that the public is entitled to know. On Broadway John Sherman has just produced and directed his third musical hit, starring the famous dancer, Sue Scott. The Scott-Sherman team is enough to make any play famous, although John brought the wrath of the nation’s educators down upon his head when he credited his success more to Senior Night experience than academics. Also in the swank and glitter of New York is Don MacCoy and his band, called “The Macabre Ten.” MacCoy still does the drums, while Vincent Rosamilia handles the ivories and Dick Brady is featured on the trumpet. In the field of literature, Cecil Wiener has won the Pulitzer Prize for her last novel. Cecil attributes it all to the fact that she thinks of the titles first and then builds the plot and characters around them. The political writers of the day emerge as Joan Eisner and Dick Thiele. Joan’s book, “Demo- cratic Socialism in the United States,” and Dick’s “Socialism: It Can’t Happen Here” were published almost simultaneously. The bewildered critics list them both as required reading and let it go at that. The magazines haven’t changed much. One of the recent issues spots a picture of June Hellrigel in one of those dreamy poses. The caption reads, “Girls! Do you want to look like this beautiful girl? Do as the Powers Models do. Use Gre-Solvent on your face and hands.” It is but a short jump from magazines to news- papers, in which Charles Marti runs a syndicated column. Marti worked his way up the hard way, starting as a reporter for the “Hobo News”. His column, still known as “The Listening Post”, is the equivalent of Walter Winchell with a dash of Bob Hope thrown in. One of his recent items states that Mary Jane Steinen has been voted the best dressed woman of the year and that Betty Patter- son is considered the best comedienne in radio. June Poppele has also crashed the headlines with her cream colored autogiro (with loudspeaker). Dick Torbert has been elected to the United Nations Organization, and in the international sports meet sponsored by that same organization Ted Baldwin and John Bippart walked off with the swimming honors and Charley Kenny set a new world’s record for the one-hundred-yard dash. In national sports Dick Barba is a unani- mous selection on everybody’s All-American this year. However, things aren’t so bright for Joel Mareinis. He bought himself a ball club and pro- ceeded to put his pet theories into practice, but the club always seems to wind up second place instead of in the coveted first. In the inventive field Malcolm Wheeler, an engineer, and Frank Conlin, a physicist, have col laborated in the perfection of an atomic motor. Fit- tingly enough, Columbium was the element used in the process. (Yes, there is such a metal.) Akin to the field of engineering and such, Joel Ollendorf has come up with a new and improved slide rule. It is two feet long and six inches wide, and is powered by a small battery-operated six volt motor. Unfortunately, use of this rule by trigonometry stu- dents has been forbidden by most schools; for on the back of the rule is a list of ten thousand com- pletely solved triangles. That jet phone you see carrying the mail from New York to Chicago was the invention of Lester O’Brien, the country’s fore- most aeronautical engineer. Proctor McCutchen, the inventor of all the animated election signs, is now the head of General Electric’s experimental division. Running true to form is Don Wildrick, cele- brating his third year with the Metropolitan Opera Company. In the “Who ’da thought it?” department we have Nancy Hutchcraft teaching Spanish. An elec- tion bet, perhaps? The winner of the Nobel Prize for medicine this year is Frank McLaughlin. He received the reward as a recognition for his work against rheu- matic heart disease. Not long ago the United Nations Organization voted to start publication of an international journal in the effort to promote better world understanding. It is published in twenty different tongues so as to reach the greatest number of people. The editor in chief is Charles Elliott, and the man who originated the idea was David Main. Peace on the home front as well as abroad is now an accomplished fact, thanks to John Richard- son. John is now the head to the C. I. O. and has secured labor peace almost by sheer force of per- sonality. Lloyd Cotsen, United States Senator from New Jersey, said in a recent speech that never before has the world experienced such a period of peace and prosperity and that the United States along with the rest of the nations will continue to move forward in the paths of peace. No man can foresee future events, so this is not necessarily an imperfect prophecy. However, it is safe to state that no matter what the future holds in store for us, it will always reflect credit upon Columbia High School. Page Seventy-Tivo Junior Night It’s “In the Bag-’’! With this title, the class of 1947 presented its original musical extravaganza which indeed had the delighted audience “in the bag.” The plot of Junior Night wafted us far from the milling city throng to the jerkwater town of East Driftwood, U. S. A., wav back in 1904, dur- ing the time of rough riding Teddy Roosevelt. When news arrived at Ezra’s Emporium in East Driftwood that president Theodore Roosevelt will stop in that town to make a political speech, Major Gridley, the town’s leading citizen, prepares a reception which breaks up when Teddys train fails to arrive. The dynamic Roosevelt (Don White- head) finally arrives on foot accompanied by four haggard secret service men and becomes Gridley’s house guest along with Finley J. Barnes (Louis Winkleman), a confidence man from New York. The community is faced with a problem in Jessica (Nancy Blanchard), Major Gridley’s beautiful daughter, who, alas, is husbandless. The Major re- fuses to allow Penelope, another one of his daugh- ters, to marry until Jessica, the eldest is wed ; but Jessica will have nothing to do with Cyrus, her only suitor. In the meantime, Barnes and his accomplice, Clarence, steal the life savings of Hercules, the strong man in the circus which is camped in town, but are discovered in the act bv Ronnie (Walter Prior), the lion tamer. Clarence blackjacks Ronnie, and the two crooks throw him into the basket of an ascension balloon. Blaming Ronnie for the robbery, Barnes talks Jessica into marrying him, hoping to get control of her father’s money. However, Presi- dent Roosevelt discovers Ronnie in the Balloon, and the two arrive in time to foil the scheme and re- unite Jessica and Ronnie. Woven into the plot was a series of spritely dances and songs. The “Dance of the Kiddies” and the “Circus Dance” were both ingenious and well interpreted, and the “Star” and “Country” dances were also very effective. However, in the opinion of this reviewer, “In the Bag’s” most creditable feature, other than its very fine plot, was its original music. Three excel- lent songs — “Once Upon a Time,” “Walking By,” and “I Think of You”, written by Tyler Richards, Alyn Heim, and Carol Levey — augmented the score of the show and formed a fine musical back- ground. The outstanding dramatic performances of the night were turned in by Don Whitehead and Bob Helmlinger. The latter really “stole” the show as Cyrus, the local yokel who pursued Jessica in vain. A great deal of credit for the production i€ due Miss Mary Clutton who directed the show, and the many membres of the junior class and the faculty who did such a good job on the costumes, scenery, and dances. The Sophomore Dramatic Club is one of Columbia High’s outstanding organizations, not only because it is the largest single club but also because it is the only all-sophomore organization in the school. The club provides all sophomores who are interested with an opportunity to express them- selves in the various fields of drama and to gain theatrical experience. The membership of the club is not based on competitive tryouts, but rather on the sincerity of the interest shown by the incoming sophomores. The membership this year has reached the record total of 275, the greatest in the club’s history. The chief aim of the organization is to include all interested club members in at least one of the year’s activities. This presents a great problem to Miss Alexander, the club sponsor, who must build an entirely new organization each year. Miss Alexander begins to fashion the club shortly after school opens in September; and she works steadily until June, devoting four afternoons a week to the tremendous job. This year’s activities include three assembly plays, of which two, “Five for Bad Luck,” and “Elmer,” have been given to date; numerous club meeting programs; and six theater excursions to New York. Members of these club parties have Page Eighty-Four seen “Hats off to Ice,” “Life With Father,” “Bloomer Girl,” and “I Remember Mama.” The club is divided into four groups. The first of these is the Little Theatre group, whose mem- bers provide the casts for the various plays given by the club. The Radio Group experiments with speaking and acting over a microphone. It attempts to improve speech habits, and also presents club programs, one of which, “Kinshew Jack Dolton,” a stark melo- drama, was done with costumes and make-up. The Make-up Group studies pancake and grease- paint make-up of men and women of various ages and races. The final one is the Drama Appreciation group, whose members discuss radio, stage, and screen personalties and productions. This year the group presented to the club the March of Time short, “Movies on Parade.” In adition to having these opportunities, mem- bers may gain experience in directing, prompting, and sewing on committees. Lockerby. It is pub- lished thirteen times a year under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Richard Thiele and managing edi- tors Norman Wolfe, Jane Kruger, and Eric Closs. The purpose of the Columbian is to report the news, to entertain its readers, and to stimulate stu- dent interest in school activities. A convenient mail- box is operated by the paper to facilitate pupil par- ticipation. Perhaps the biggest problem facing the editorial staff each issuo is obtaining a lead story. When such events as Junior Night, the Senior Play, or the Thanksgiving Day football game are about to take place, they are used for lead stories. On other occassions the Guidance Depatment is given the spotlight, or an assembly is reviewed. This year marked the introduction of two new features “Who’s News,” which reports interesting happen- ings to Columbia students, and “The Critic’s View,” which presents reviews of current plays and mov- ing pictures. Other regular features are the popular “Jive Jargon” and the ever humorous “The Listen- ing Post.” Sports are also given full coverage in every issue of the Columbian. Charles Marti is the general sports’ editor, and Claire Conover handles all the G. A. A. news. Lloyd Cotsen puts the finish- ing touches on the stories with accurate, yet strik- ing headlines. Besides this editorial staff, the Columbian also has an equally important business staff which is sponsored by Mr. Carl Stronv. It is the job of this group to obtain advertisers for the paper and distribute the copies throughout the school when it is published. Alice Strahan and Joanna Schooley are the circulation and advertis- ing managers. The editors and the business mana- gers are assisted by many reporters who all help make a well organized paper. Earlier this year the Columbian presented an assembly program which helped the student body to understand better the aims and work of their school newspaper. Ninety Seven Columbia t Orchestra Chorus Music holds a prominent place in the numerous activities of Columbia High School. There are four principal musical organizations which afford opportuni- ties for any person who is musically inclined. The Chorus and Orchestra com- bined, directed by Mr. Shenton, give two annual concerts, and the Orchestra plays for both Junior and Senior Nights. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Rudy, adds the necessary color to our Pep rallys in school and each football game in addition to presenting an annual concert. Lastly, the more serious type of music is presented by the A Cappella Choir. In addition to these groups, the Music Box club is open to all pupils with any interest or talent in music. Music always enters into each assembly pro- gram through the accompaniment of our organist, Mr. Blake. Pupil assembly participation is encouraged through the presentation of an annual variety show. Thus music plays an outstanding part in the activities of Columbia High School. Mr. Shenton Mr. Shenton Each year for the past nineteen years, Mr. F. Russell Shenton has had the responsibility of working with two hundred odd students in planning and presenting assembly programs, con- certs, and orchestrating for Junior Night. Nineteen years is a long time, but Mr. Shenton regards it as a great pleasure to work with Columbia students because he finds they have an outstand- ing amount of talent and spirit. Before coming to Columbia, Mr. Shenton was music director in the public schools of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He has also taught at West Chester State Teacher’s College, Pennsylvania, and at New York Uni'versity. In 1929 Mr. Shenton wrote one of Columbia’s favorite songs, ‘‘Columbia Memories”. To those of us who have worked with him, this song possesses the sincere feelings that character- ize his devotion to both the cause of music and to the school. Only through recognition of his abilities can one expect to advance in the field of music, and Columbia is indeed fortunate to have a director so capable of recognizing and developing its talents. t The Chorus, open to all pupils who have an interest in singing, is under the direction of Mr. Shenton and meets every day as a regular part of the school curriculum. In its daily schedule are both classical and popular music. During the war the songs popular at that time were a special feature of the program. The Chorus presents two concerts a year, one in January and the other in May. Concert arrangements of many semi-classical songs have always been available to the Chorus, and consequently the concerts include variety in the type of music presented. The music is especially chosen to please each type of listener. Mr. Shenton has always been careful to include a variety of songs in keeping with the times. The Chorus, the largest musical organization in Columbia, offers ex- cellent opportunities for the pupil participation. The public concerts presented by the Chorus, Orchestra, and the Band represent the achievements accomplished by these organizations during the year. Orchestra — Director, Mr. Shenton. Band — Director, Mr. Rudy. Chorus—Director, Mr. Shenton. The first public concert is given in January by the Orchestra and Chorus combined. Solo work is always an attraction, and a great deal of variety is present. By far the most important concerts are the ones presented during music week. The student is given every opportunity to render solos, and there are other outstanding ways of performing such as piano-organ duos or instru- mental duets. The concert is usually terminated by a heavy Chorus number accompanied by the Orchestra. Perhaps the favorite is the famous “Ballad for Americans”. A touch of comedy was found extremely successfully last year when the Orchestra gave us its version of “The Village Orchestra”. The Band concert follows a week later under the direction of Mr. Rudy. Here also there are always solo numbers, and the music varies from martial strains and the classics to variations of popular music. The public concerts are always a colorful part of the school agenda. Page One Hundred Parnassian Society Disraeli The venerable Parnassian Society, which dates back to 1926, affords dramatically inclined students with an opportunity to gain experience in the vari- ous fields of drama. A council, composed of two seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores, along with the five club officers, assists Miss Memory, the society’s faculty adviser, in running the organization. The work of the society is divided among the standing commit- tees: make-up, music, lighting, publicity, and ticker. The year’s activities include two meetings a month, three assembly plays, occasional theater parties, and an annual public production. This year’s officers are: president, Malcolm Wheeler; vice-president, Patty Edwards; treasurer, Joel Ollendorf; secretary, Shirley Schuyler; and program chairman, Mary Bowen. When at last the fateful night in February rolled around, the cast of Louis N. Parker’s “Disraeli” wandered through the empty auditorium finding the seats which their parents or their friends would occupy two hours later—joking, showing off their costumes, and in general trying to suppress their inward excitement. “Veterans” of Junior Night. Senior Play, and other Parnassian plays were just as excited with the whole experience as those per- formers appearing in their first production. To all, this night was the goal which they had been striv- ing for through five grueling weeks of rehearsal under the excellent tutelage of Miss Memory. They had seen the characters of English dukes and duchesses, British bankers, Russian spies, and of course the Rt. Honorable Benjamin Disraeli, King’s Prime Minister, materialize as Miss Memory not only told us, but often showed us how to play the part. The play itself was centered about the intrigue surrounding the purchase of the Suez Canal by England, and those in the audience were kept on the edge of their seats as Howard Ulsamer, por- traying the English Prime Minister, matched his wits against the foreign conspirators who were out to stop the purchase. The vivacious Clarissa, Betsy Dorrance, provided the audience with many a laugh at the expense of Charles, Charles Selden, who came to court her with a report on “model cottages” and “reforms on the estate”. With typical feminine pride, the pretty heroine resented this treatment and proceeded to teach the lord a lesson. The outstanding performance was unquestion- ably given by Howard Ulsamer who took an ex- tremely difficult] part and portrayed it remarkably well. During the play Disraeli had to show anger, amusement, and suffering, to be stern and com- manding at times, and kind and lovable at others. “Disraeli,” being intensely dramatic in spots, and for the most part in a serious vein, was more diffi- cult to present than some of the other Parnassian plays. However, it is a tribute to the cast and its director that the manner in which it was done ranks it among the finest productions in the history of the society. Page One Hundred. Coach Raymond Football Season Under the capable leadership of Coach Elmer Raymond, the 1945 Cougar football machine completed a somewhat disappointing season by suffering a 12-7 defeat at the hands of West Orange. This setback came close on the heels of an exciting 19-7 victory over a highly favored East Orange aggregation. The team closed out the campaign with a seasonal record of three victories and six losses. At the outset of the season Coach Raymond had the nucleus of a powerful team. We over- came Kearny handily 13-7 in our initial encounter but went down to defeat at the hands of a fast Plainfield eleven, 18-6, in a game that was played on a rain soaked gridiron. The team amazed everyone by defeating a highly touted Morristown opponent, 13-8, in a thrilling con- test. This game proved to be disastrous for the team since it lost Jask Bahto, a potential All- Stater; Hugh Towey, a proficient punter; and Jack Denardo, a promising passer. When a team loses three of its starting performers, with the season well under way, the loss will have a decided effect on the outcome of its future games. When the Orange game arrived, the boys put up a stubborn defense, and although hold- ing the opponent to two first downs while gathering sixteen of our own, we secumbed by a 20-7 count. Thereafter followed a succession of three consecutive defeats at the hands of West- field, Montclair, and New Brunswick. However, it must be emphasized that no team displayed more fight and determination in the face of consistent hard luck than did this squad. It was discouraging for the boys to realize that statistically they had outplayed all of their opponents, and yet, they did not have the victories to account for their play. Undoubtedly the outstanding performer of the season was Dick Barba, the brilliant half- back, who consistently made long gains throughout the campaign. Pinky Sellitto was another bright star with his passing and punting. There were many other players worthy of mention, such as Dick Meyer, our rugged tackle: Bill Campbell, a talented backfield operator: Ted Baldwin, a standout guard; and John Olwine, who improved at center as the season pro- gressed; but the one thing that marked this team as a great one was the spirit and aggressive- ness that it displayed in the face of continual disappointment. In their sophomore year, they almost won the banner from the seniors, a real feat as that senior class was the most athletic class in the nine- teen years of the G. A. A. In their junior year, they won the banner for the first time. This year the banner battle was stiffer, but the seniors have high hopes of coming out on top with their second banner. With such outstanding athletes as Betty Sternkopf, Jackie Ebling, and Alice Strahan, the class of ’46 disting- uished itself with its sportsmanship and athletic ability. This year will be remembered as one of the finest in G. A. A. history for several reasons: the fine Christmas party; the quality of leadership shown by Jackie Ebling, president of the G. A. A., and Joan Eisner, vice-president; and the success of and the interest in the Modern Dance Club, whose open house dance recital proved that the club is one of the most popular branches of the G. A. A. The G. A. A. and all its activities will always be remembered by the senior girls as one of the most pleasant parts of Columbia life. This year the Girls’ Athletic Associa- tion, with a thriving membership of 622, the highest in its history, has, as usual, sponsored a program of inter-class sports of all kinds. Soccer, with its ac- companying aches and bruises, domin- ated the fall season. The results of the soccer tournament predicted a tight ban- ner struggle for the seniors, as they won the tournament by a single point. Early in the fall the get-together party was held, when all the sophomore mem- bers were welcomed, and the new sopho- more managers were initiated into the G. A. A. Council with due pomp and ceremony. The volleyball tournament was ush- ered in during the winter. The opening of the pool, late because of the polio scare, started Junior and Senior Life Saving Courses, covering an afternoon a week for twenty weeks. Before Christ- mas, the G. A. A. Council presented one of its best parties of the year — the Christmas party, complete with all the season’s trimming and festivities. Basket- ball, perhaps the most popular of all the sports, filled out the rest of the winter. Swimming teams and the two meets ar- rived with the spring. BUILD YOUR YEARBOOK WITH MASTER CRAFTSMEN Fine Quality Printing is nowhere so essential as in school and college an- nuals. The story told by copy is worthless unless the printed pages provide eloquent testimony of its truthful reproduction of campus life. • Production of distinctive printing depends upon the masterful handling of such technicalities as layout, artwork, make-ready, and presswork, and also upon the selection of proper ink, paper and binding. • Consistently good print- ing has made the Colyer organization the first and last choice of the lead- ing schools and colleges.
