FREDERIC J. CREHAN Acting Principal Cl RTIS H. THRELKELD Superintendent JOHN II. BOSSHART Ntw Jtrtey Stale Comminioner of Education A Message From Mr. Crehan .... Our aims in this war have been stated in many ways by many per- sons. The statements vary in character from the concise Atlantic Charter to detailed descriptions of a post-war world organization. Expressed or implied in all of them, however, the thought persists that there must not he another war, that there must he devised a practical plan for a lasting world peace. There have been many attempts during the centuries to eliminate the crime of war, or to diminish its frequency. They have ranged from the Pax Romana to the League of Nations. All such attempts have so far failed. Moreover, our American plan of political isolation has not kep even us at peace. We have seen in 1917 and again in 1941 that we are inextricably bound up in the affairs of the world, that we cannot remain at peace while the rest of the world is at war. We should know now that peace as well as war is indivisible. Despite the failure of our past national policy to keep us at peace, and of all attempts to organize the world for permanent peace, the search must go on. The end of this war will give us another chance, perhaps our last, to build a peaceful world. What responsibility will you, the members of the class of 1944, have for the solution of this problem? You have the obligation to inform yourselves about the problems of world peace, to study the plans that have been made in the past, and to learn why they failed. You must understand the factors— economic, technological, social, racial, political, psychological—which operate to place practical limitations on international action. You must develop a sympathetic and receptive understanding of other peo- ples. You must discover what the United States can do to help build a just and lasting peace. For “blood and tears shall he the inheritance of that people who neglect to learn and to teach . . . that it is neces- sary for men to live at peace if they want to live at all ADMINISTRATION Mr. John H. Bosshart, for 17 years superintendent of schools, lias been signally honored in his appoint- ment to the office of New Jersey State Commissioner of Education. Mr. Curtis H. Threlkeld. Principal of Columbia High School since 1927. lias been equally honored in his appointment to the post of Superin- tendent of Schools. Mr. Frederic J. Crehan. ice- principal of Columbia for 17 years, has been made Acting Principal; and Mr. Harry B. Shceley. formerly history teacher and class guide, has been made Acting Vice-principal and Dean of Boys, to serve along with Miss Mary Henderson, Vice-principal and Dean of Girls. The editors of the Mirror feel that they speak for the entire student body in expressing best wishes to our new administrators, in full knowledge that they, as able educators, will carry on Columbia’s high standards. II Bin B. SHEELEY Acting Vice-Principal
