Pago Six SENIORS 1 9 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 4 I Senior JJ-iitor V () Columbia, thou hast taught us The path that tee should tread. In the future, when we look back upon our years in Columbia, the most important things that we shall remember and for which we shall be grateful are the guidance and the help that we received here. It is here that our feet have been set upon the paths that they are to follow in the years yet to come. We owe a debt of gratitude to our teachers for the hours they have spent preparing us to meet the demands that tomorrow may put upon us. Perhaps it is significant that we have been trail-breakers, for during our careers at Columbia two new clubs—The Lyceum, and The English Club—and the Sophomore Coun- cil were founded. May that pioneer spirit cling to us always. By thy rules of pride ami honor In our u'ork and play tce'n led. Each minute that we have spent in the halls and classrooms of Columbia has made us more aware of the spirit of comradeship that surrounds us. The' ?ood sportsmanship and courage of our athletic teams have put real meaning into the words pride and honor. The fun that we got out of working to- gether on What's Doing? and Outward Bound” has made us appreciate the wealth of friendship and cooperation that has been ours through Columbia's unwritten rules of pride and honor. Our work and play have covered a wide range of activities during these three years. The clubs attained new heights. To men- tion a few: The French Club had its La Malade Imaginaire, The Kilocycle Club ob- tained its license, and The Latin Club at last held a real Roman banquet. As we look back upon their records, we are proud of them, for their successes were due largely to our sincere interest and faithful support. We have given careful consideration to the mechanism that is responsible for the smoothly running life of Columbia High School, and the result has been an efficient and well-administered school government. By learning the workings of this small scale democracy we have learned what we shall be called upon to do when we take our places in the great democracy that is our country. There will be one memory of our life in Columbia that will bring to us a feeling of regret. At the beginning of our senior year publication of our school paper, The Columbian, was suspended. This occur- rence did more than anything else to make us realize that we will always have some obstacles to surmount, no matter how smooth our paths may look. However, we are justly proud of our other journalistic enter- prise, The Mirror. We have enjoyed the privilege of working on it, and we shall gratefully take it with us as the only tangible reminder of our own class of nineteen hun- dred fortyone. In the years of life's hard struggle We care not what's in store. When we are graduated from Columbia High School, we shall be completely ignor- ant of what the future may hold for us. As we go on through life, our years in Columbia shall sink farther and farther back into our memories, and yet we will never forget them entirely. We shall have a fund of mem- ories and friendships that will never be lost to us. We care not what's in store; our past has given us courage to face our future. We shall go on through life with our heads held high. For thy motto is our motto And our cry. “Excelsior.” Page Eight COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 1 9 4 1 SENIOR OFFICERS WILLIAM MILLER President DOROTHY ENGSTRAND Pice-President JUNE ABLESON Secretary WAYNE BLESSING Treasurer Alice Wooley........................................ 101 Martha McMullen..................................... 102 Rita Banta........................................... 144 Margaret Kingston.................................... 155 Mary Cleary......................................... 207 George Davis........................................ 209 Eleanor Francis..................................... 215 Marguerite Harvey................................... 217 Marilyn Isenburg .................................... 222B Elaine Lewis........................................ 231 William Patterson................................... 232 Florence Ann Marshall............................... 319 Wayne Blessing ..................................... 320 Frances Reidenback ................................. 339 Melvin Schiff....................................... 348 Jean Thomson........................................ 404 Pag© Nine ARTHUR ABELSON Art (223 Conway Court, South Orange) Irvington High School. Page Sixty-two 9 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 4 1 Sen ior On November 16, 1940, the audience wit- nessing the annual senior play was treated to a rare and moving drama, Outward Bound, by Sulton Vane; and another student pro- duction went down in the annals of Columbia High School as a triumph. Your editor was one of the very fortunate few who were allowed backstage during re- hearsals, so she knows how expertly Mr. Stanley Wood directed the production and how quickly each part took form and grew under the hands of its master. Some skep- tics had said that we students were too young, too inexperienced, to do a play so profound as Outward Bound; but with the abundance of talent that the class possesses, and with the hard work of the production committees, we proved that we could make it a success, and. in our proof, we put forth PL,, one of the finest plays ever seen in Columbia. The majority of the credit for this success goes, of course, to the actors, since one of the peculiarities of the play is that it has no lead. The story concerns several people from incongruously different walks of life, who meet on a liner bound for somewhere, and find that they are all dead and waiting judgment. Each character is a vitally essen- tial part of the play; and each characteriza- tion had to be executed with great sincerity and restraint. The cast of this strange and difficult play, a cost which included Ann Davis, Bob Sluyter, Bud Reeve, Gordon Condit, Irene Lindquist, Albert Besser, Ed Stattsburg, Dorland Corsman, and Pat O'Brien, must be highly commended for its fine work. Pressing the automatic door opener, we climb into the front seat and are no sooner in the car than our friends are suddenly taken with a bad case of last period lethargy. They soon fall asleep, and when they awake they find themselves—it can't be true!—oh but it is!— in 1956!! Speeding southward over the new sea- board highway (110 m.p.h.), we flick on the radio for a bit of diversion. The first voice that meets our eager ears is that of ace news commentator, Frank Adrian, telling us that Bill Speirs is waging a successful campaign against the 5th Termites. Not wishing to hear about the war in Greenland, we turn to station WHY (?) and are soothed by the melodic strains (and what a strain!) of Fancy Phil Marsden and his Balmy Boys. Among Phil's fellows we recognize such solid senders as Dick What a Ride Enderwood, Uncle Wentworth Barnes, Cowboy Bel- lows, and Palkowitz, of the Slush-Pump. Gene Cochran and Martha Gearhart, the Umph gals of the Gay Nineties, are col- laborating on the vocals. Arriving at Washington, D. C., we are just in time to find Bob MacNabb treating the Senate to one of his choice filibusters, while Justice of the Peace, John Livingston, is try- ing to keep Wes Allinsmith from publishing his latest depth bomb, entitled, Man's Fight Against Women or Hold That Line. In the White House, First Lady of the Land, Joan Kieman, is telling Mary Vogel how to handle the Girl Scouts when they get too wild! As we head out of the city a bright red swoosh just about takes the chromium off of our front bumper! We are later informed that the swoosh was Fire Chief, Dumond Chalker, who has a shiny new engine of his own now, with a siren attached. (And 1 don't mean Connie Flemming!) Journeying westward, we stop in Detroit where we luckily meet Bill Miller, who is trying to sell his plans for a one-tower sus- pension bridge equipped with pontoons so it will float in case of emergency. (Try the St. Lawrence, Bill.) Also in Detroit we find George Ford, carrying on the work of Uncle Henry. George has just perfected a new car; it's called the Typhoon Oust an over- grown Zepher ). Sharing the scientific spot- light of the Middle West, we find those two cautious chemists, A1 Shelby and Frank Arkenburg (they finished their Groups ) try- ing to capture the atom that got away, while Connie Russen is experimenting with dimetylethylnapthalyne. Passing through the Wild and Wooley West, we get a glimpse of Doc Summers' ranch. Decked in a bright yellow shirt and satine breeches are Larry Flash Wanthouse and Bill Where'd You Get That Hat Dun- away. Vincent Barba, foreman of the Lazy B Bar(ba), also slings a mean lariat! On the shores of the mighty Pacific, Jack Kraushaar has accepted Miss Vale's chal- lenge and is now the president of the largest laundry concern in the U. S.! (Nice going, Jack.) Next door to Jack we find Boutwell Foster and Franklin Whitescarver, who own an orange plantation where they can throw oranges to their hearts' content without en- dangering the lives of the public. (Late Lunch.) Phil Herbert's new coed (college) is our next stop. Dot Engstrand is the Dean of Girls, while Alice Buttons Barradale heads the language department. She is assisted by Rita Unbuttons Banta, who has been her helpmate, ever since '40 when the two shared ONE seat in room 144! Jerry the Duke Simons is teaching his pupils his own tech- nique of painting masterpieces in time to Tiger Rag and In the Mood.” On the grid iron the school is bound to succeed under the able coaching of the famous Tonkin Team. Racing down a seventy degree mountain- side, our steering gear seems to be on the blink—we are nearing a hairpin turn—we'll never make it!—we'll have to bail out!— Jump for it!----- Otherwise we would have reported on the remainder of the class of '41. That was the watchword in the auditorium on March 14 and 15, when the Class of 1942 presented its edition of Junior Night. The theme of the extravaganza, appropriate to the times, was the draft; but a clever and imag- inative Junior Night Committee gave this sub- ject a new and hilarious twist in writing an extraordinarily good show. Much of the credit for the production should go to this year's director, Miss Christie Tollefson, who put the play into the realm of the superlative. The plot concerned the adventures of a group of girls drafted into the army and the antics of the boys who remained behind to keep the home fires burning. Worked into this intriguing frame were a number of dances, among them the Military Rookie, football dances, the fascinating Conga, and the riot- ous Can-Can—all beautifully staged by Misses Darrow and Walker. Student Jim Barry is especially to be congratulated for the original music he contributed to the score. The show ended with a note of patriotism in a grand finale that was truly inspiring. The glamor girls who found themselves in the army were Jean Beazley, Dorrit Brask, Eleanor Cope, Alan Summers, Joan Harrocks, Pat Campbell, Virginia Schuck, Myrah Hal- tom, and Joan Drury- Among the outstanding men were Emil Zecher, Marlin Mackenzie, Jack Winninghoff, Pete Schaefer, Nat Ehren- krantz, Ray Kirwin, Dick Mason, Dick Marsh, and Alec MacNichol. Pago Eighty-olght 9 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 4 1 SCHOOL COUNCIL OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN S oof Cfouncif The School Council, operating on the principles o! all governing bodies, gives its members an opportunity to participate in the activities of a government. The council consists of its officers, standing committee chairmen, and elected homeroom represent- atives, and its year's program is based al- most entirely on the work of the twelve standing committees, jurisdiction over all regular matters which arise during the school year being given to the council itself. During 1940-41 a peak in the council's progress has been reached, through the dis- cussion and completion of new ideas and undertakings by the some seventy members of the organization. A movement on girl cheerleading was thoroughly investigated; three new clubs were approved by the coun- cil; two football rallies were sponsored; the library and the lunchroom were investigated for improvement; the drives for membership in the Home and School Association and Welfare Federation were under council guid- ance; and control in the lunchroom showed definite improvement through the council’s efforts. The development of an activities ticket for the purpose of solving the financial demands in Columbia each fall has been con- sidered and investigated by two council com- mittees. Reports from four members of Columbia who attended the Glassboro Con- vention revealed interesting ideas on school governments and activities. Council officers for the year 1940-41 were president, Bill Speirs; vice president, Jane Congleton; secretary, Joan Kieman; treasurer. Bill Colsh. Committee chairmen were as fol- lows: Civics, Gordon Condit; Eligibility, George Ford; Finance, Bill Colsh; Elections, Bob MacNabb; House and Grounds, Merrill Box; Traffic, George Kelly; Fire, Dumond Chalker; Lunchroom, Henry Jung; Pep, Bud Reeve; Social, Jane Oberg; Assembly, Judy St. Clair; and Traditions, Beverly Balch. In spite of the zeal- ous efforts of its able, well-organized staff, we had to do without our school paper. Rea- son: lack of adequate student support. About Christmas time, however, a group of alert sophomores, operating through the Sophomore Council and headed by Dick Yorkey, began to agitate for revival of the paper. They convinced a required number of petitioners, and soon enough subscriptions were collected to insure the return of the Columbian for the second semester. But who was to run the paper? How was the staff to be chosen fairly, with opportunity for all, from the number interested? Finally, in order to do away once and for all with the criticism that the Columbian was a closed and exclusive organization, a sys- tem of tryouts was devised in which merit was the sole qualification. Every student in the school was given a chance, and from those who applied for positions Gates Helms ( 42) was made Business Manager, Calvin Carver ( 43) Promotion Manager, and Rich- ard Stoecker ( 43) Advertising Manager. In order that the greatest number might gain experience, and with the idea in mind of choosing the better members of each for the final, permanent staff, two complete edi- torial staffs were chosen and alternately put to work publishing the paper. Bob Sluyter was named managing editor of one, Stan Flink, a Junior, of the other. This rebirth of the Columbian has been more than simply a revival. It has been a thoroughgoing reorganization intended to make for a more democratic school paper and a more extensive news coverage. After a successful seven- game season, during which only one defeat was suffered, the team enter- ed the state play-offs against West Side and won easily by four points to one. The team next defeated Bar- ringer, East Orange, and Trenton. Responsible for this sensational sea- son were Captain Max Soto, Ted Cohn, Tom Croake, Bill Meams, Bob Rader, Ed Mulroy, and Ed Feeley. Ted Cohn went entirely through the season undefeated. 1941 SEASON Matches have been scheduled with the following schools: Plainfield East Orange Morristown Weequahic West Orange Barringer West Side Bloomfield Pago One Hundred Four 9 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 4 1 Cjirls ’ Sports Hark ye, fellow students! By one quirk of fate an all-too-short summer has quickly passed and the bee-hive activities of the G. A. A. have resumed. Girls—some in ski pants and ear- muffs, others in tennis shorts viciously knocking an elusive ball up and down the field—began a soccer season which future historians will record in letters of flame. Teams were soon out and practice began in earnest, with all as- pirants looking intensely forward to G. A. A. COUNCIL theinter-classcompetition. Even the sophomores untangled themselves from the bungling beginners' stage and soon could bring the ball down the field as skilfully as their older sisters. Then the long awaited days of competition arrived, and the seniors, though a little rough and noisy at times, rolled up the highest point score in history, their gaiety becoming even more unrcarous during those after-sports locker room gab-fests. Who mentioned those? Upon entering the lockers, one senses the wholesome atmosphere of singing, powder feuds, and bull sessions , surrounded by a mischievous air—all the things that make the G. A. A. high spots in our school life . . . days never to be forgotten. On soggy and uneven courts, while the gentle breezes of Indian summer hastened the rustling of autumn leaves, that familiar twang of ball against racquet once again brought forth its usual throngs of enthusiasts and ushered in the annual tennis tournament. After a strenuous month of prac- tice and eliminations, the envied group of finalists won their places in the line-up for the spring tournament. It is safe to predict that the seniors, at this time, may expect keen competition. Under the able tutelage of their respective captains, the home room basketball teams success- fully launched their campaigns. Then the contest was narrowed down to two teams—one composed of sophomores from Room 329, the other of juniors from 230. Before the mighty on- slaught of the juniors, the game but out-classed sophomores finally bowed. After experiment- ing last year, the Modem Dance Club has now become a definite part of the G. A. A., its membership totaling thirty girls. As the club went through its steady rhythmical exercises in the Friday meetings, Miss Darrow showed satisfaction at the immense progress of the girls. Each member's initiative and imagination is given full expression, as the dancing for all the year is mostly creative. Immediately after the basketball season, volleyball was heralded in, giving many girls the opportunity of participating and of gaining points toward their athletic awards. Then, as old man Winter crept reluctantly away, spring brought forth baseball and swimming, with the thrills, excitement, and upsets that al- ways come at the end of a bright sea- son. The G. A. A. has had one of the most exciting and profitable years in its history, each member participating in friendly rivalry, making many new friends, and contributing to the whole- hearted spirit of cooperation which has always been an outstanding charac- teristic of the association. Page One Hundred Five 1 9 COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL MIRROR 4 1 « J ntramural Sports T. H. Higbee Director of Physical Education A new sports program was begun this year under the direction of Mr. Nuttall, the purpose of which is to give every boy a chance to participate rather than the select few who make varsity teams. It got off to a flying start this year with more than one hundred and eighty boys engaging in three different activities. The most popular sport was touch football. Teams were chosen from each home room, with a manager for each. Teams of the same class played each other until all but one had been eliminated. But football was not the only sport. Basketball stirred a great deal of interest, too. Captains were chosen by Mr. Nuttall on the basis of their experience, and most of these were varsity men. These boys chose their teams from about one hundred and sixty boys. Two leagues were formed: a Monday-Wednesday-Friday group, and a Tuesday-Thursday group. The tournament was conducted in a most ideal manner—the round robin method—which allowed each team to play a full schedule. The third sport was swimming. The preliminaries were run off within each class and the finals were then held between classes. Varsity men conducted the events. A great many boys do not have a chance in athletics, not because of a lack of interest but because they are not quite good enough to make varsity teams. It was for these boys that intramurals were started. Under this system winners of each event or play-off receive their numerals; thus they gain recognition for their ability. Now all the boys can get needed exercise, play with others of their own age and ability, and may improve enough by this practice to make a bid for varsity positions another year. It is with this thought in mind that the coaches look forward to finding potential varsity material in the intramural con- tests. The intramurals do not stop at the end of the first semester, however; this spring there will be more basketball in addition to baseball and possibly track. The program, in fact, has no bounds. Questionnaires filled out by the boys will form a basis for further activity. Mr. Baker, who is to take care of the spring intramurals, said that the boys could have anything they wanted, even if it was marbles. Horseshoes, volleyball, tennis, and fly-casting were suggested, and there are many other possibilities. The knowledge and experience gained from such pursuits will create new hobbies for many, develop sportsmanship, and improve health. We believe that in years to come, with an enlarged intramural program, every boy in school not engaged in inter-scholastic sports will be active in this program. Such is the goal.
