With a feeling of regret, we stop and glance over the happy, joyful years of senior high school. Little did we realize the number of oppor- tunities that were available to us when we first entered these portals; however it wasn't long before many of our classmates utilized these opportunities to their fullest extent. So now let us review the accom- plishments of the class of '37. Members of our class competed in every sort of activity in the school. In dramatics we have a fine record. In our sophomore year the Sopho- more Dramatic Club presented many excellent productions. Among these was the annual May Day pageant. This was received with much acclaim and praise. In our junior year, our presentation was the musical hit, Once Around the Clock . The cast included such talented actors and actresses as Marjorie Van Morstein, Edgar Morrison, Jane Williams, and a host of others. Also in the span of our junior year, the pageant, The American Way , was given by the Parnassian Society to commemorate the three- hundredth anniversary of secondary education in the United States. In the cast were many students of the class of '37; many of the scenes were written by junior English classes. Then, as the crowning achievement, The Rivals , the senior play, received tremendous ovations from all who saw it. With this play as its final stage production, the senior class, as a group, closed its book on dramatics. In the field of sports we had many outstanding performers. Bob Hildebrand certainly made a name for himself in football. Also Buddy Bond, Phil Capella, John McMannis, and many other members of our class made the varsity in this sport. In swimming Seth Eberhardt, Carl Adam, Don Speilman, Jack Dunn, and Tom Morton were point-getters for our team, last year and this. Fred Spingler was the heaviest hitter on the baseball team, and Bob Kohl was sensational in his pitching. Dan Provost showed his superb goalie ability in hockey in his first two years. Basketball produced such players as Bud McMullen, and Bill Powley. In tennis, Jack Bedea carried Columbia's colors. Our track record was upheld by such sterling tracksters as John Brundage, Nick DeLuca, Milton Frenchman, Bob Hildebrand, and Frank Weiner. John Brundage, as president of the Student Council, added much to the betterment of the school. Jack Torbert and his violin are well-known to all. Gilbert Dunklin, president of the Guild, is also Editor-in-Chief of the Mirror. Many of our class filled responsible positions on the staff of the Columbian. Marjorie Va,n Morstein gained the rare honor of being Editor-in-Chief of the Columbian in her junior year. For three years we have enjoyed the work and play of Columbia High School. Although failures have accompanied successes, we have had the first training for the preparation of later life, and the experiences of these three years will prove invaluable as time goes on. IN MEMORIAM Douglas Christie John Ennis Mary Norton Page fifty-eight OF THE CLASS OF 1937 Class Will WE, the Class of '37, being of sound mind and body, do now take this oppor- tunity, in approaching our demise, to dispose of those possessions accumulated in this most worldly of spheres, in this, our last will and testament. To the Class of '38, we leave our ability to complete a course of study in the required and specified time. Consideration of their immaturity prompts us to intro- duce the following stipulation: If it is found that through the moral weakness of youth they have relied overmuch upon this gift and have used it as a crutch, its power shall be cancelled at least thirty days before graduation. Conceit, self-importance, and our versatile wit we leave to those who feel the need of it; we have been informed that these qualities cannot be smuggled through the awesome portals of the afterworld. (ATTORNEY'S NOTE: Inquire of me.) Ours was the epoch of the knock-knock, the mouthie, and previously the what's this. These we admit to freely, but beer jackets—shame, Dick Brown! To fools, we leave this distorted fashion; to fire, we condemn the jackets! As a humanitarian measure we desire to take with us the puns and jokes of our loved and revered Mr. Erickson. Alas, they have been too long accustomed to their place in the tenacious brain of the aforementioned Mr. Erickson. Ah, Age! Posterity, resign yourself to your fate. We leave you a bunch of fortitude. The ideal and right of liberty is your just prerogative. We give you the power to use it—we just dare you! PERSONAL: ITEM: We, the inmates of homeroom 325, do present the uninitiated with Doc Sum- mers' Morgue. May Experience, a word not as yet included in their vocabulary, soon teach them that a state of rigor mortis is, after all, the condition most befitting a corpse. ITEM: I, John McDermitt, leave to the younger generation only a memory. Let it serve as a shining example. ITEM: I, Kitty Pratt, leave to Janet Merill a deep set of dimples. Use them, my deah, and they'll take your word for it that tea was served at the Boston Tea Party. ITEM: I, Tom Morton, bequeath to Duncan Lee my perfect compatibility with the waters of the pool. Duncan, my son, the stuff is also good to drink. ITEM: I, Janet Beautiful But— Lang, bequeath to nobody in particular my inane propensity for having more fun over nothing at all. Oh, Joy! ITEM: I, John Brundage, leave my hurdling ability to Bud Konow to enable him to get past the Junior Year. ITEM: I, Mary Morrison, bequeath my wonderful tawny hair to Dot Steckman, in order that henceforth her golden locks shall wander full from crown tawnee. ITEM: I, Max Webah, leave a Southe'n accent to Helen Stanley, who nevah could pronounce her ahr's. Now she'll have a decent alibi. ITEM: I. Bob Hildebrand, bequeath to Jim Carrier my boyish charm and a bushel of thrilling muscles to fill out his emaciated body. ITEM. I, Franklin Branin, bequeath to the swimming pool doors a set of unplugable keyholes. (Not meant for keys.) ITEM: I, Jane Williams, with all due sincerity, do bequeath my inferiority complex to Annette Ault. ITEM: I, Barbara Lane, in order to complicate matters, request that my American Girl personality be divided equally between the component parts of that conniving pair, Dee Dann and Marilyn Landers. Let them be forewarned that the Amercan Girl is an institution, not a magazine. We hereby appoint the front steps the sworn executor of this, our last testament. Let it be their sacred duty to carry out our wishes herein expressed. MIRROR si Page fifty-nine Class Prophecy MIRROR THE last Thursday in November, 1986, has rolled around at last, though doubt- ■ less with far more celerity than we ever had contemplated it would. The West Orange-Columbia gridiron classic has lost none of its edge as a Turkey-day drawing card; our turkey perhaps has lost some of its edge through its incorporation into minute pills of more-or-less pin-head nature. But in this day and age we evidently do not care so much for our fine (tasting) feathered friend of fifty times yesteryear; we would rather turn our attention to that battle of motor fuels, axel greases, and spark plugs, the game which we called football in the days when men were men. But hark! The beat of a drum comes faintly through the morning air, barely audible 'mid the roar of the fleet of aircraft overhead. Nor have we been deceived, indeed, for there at the far end of the stadium, the band, three hundred strong, approaches on horseback, so to speak, the horses a rich vermillion color with ebony manes and tails. At their head, and in the capacity of guest leader for the morning, rides the internationally known bandmaster, Sam Jackson, his black mare trimmed with a red providing a marked contrast with the snow-white of Sam's beard. Alongside Sam ride Barbara (The Duchess) Twitchell and the diminutive Johnny Brady, who will render, during the half, their super-swing version of the ever popular High School Stamp , a product of the musical genius of Bob Vogeler. But at present, pint-sized Jane Williams, having taken over the job of announcing for Madison Square Garden, Inc., is bellowing forth across the broad expanse of the stadium. She has announced an old-fashioned trucking contest between those twc peers of the Broadway stage of thirty years ago, Jack Dunn and Johnny Hyde. Cries of truck on down , swing it , and the like, (oh! so familiar back in '37) come from the lips of such stage, screen, and television stars as Marjorie Van Morstein, Eleanor Packard, John Groel, and Ed Morrison, who have entered fully into the spirit of the occasion. Indeed sly smiles are seen to creep over the learned countenances of even such grand old men of the U. S. Supreme Court as Brundage and Ames; and those two so-called saviors of the old Democratic Party, Larry Crowley and Bruce Livy, are eagerly watching the happenings below. As the some one hundred thousand spectators make their way to their seats, we catch sight of (who could miss it!) the crimson hair of Evans Valens, noted playright. With him we see the Roberta of modern dress design, Janet Lang, and the celebrated impresso-realistic artiste, Crandall Wallenstein. Although both Miss Lang and Mr. Wallenstein have come forth with some highly different creations in their line, they are probably talking about Mr. Valens' latest dramatic epic entitled Gertrude Stein— In Fifteen Acts , which, it is generally agreed, is either a new high or low in modern dramatic achievement. Full many other of the class of 1937 are lost for the moment to our vision: busi- ness men, college professors, technicians, and countless others; yet they are all there —in some way, however great or small, contributing to that fine spirit and drive which has been, and always will be a part of them. There was the Ditto bird and Crocodile Crehan and the Mad Swede and Dormouse Charley Rathbun and Arras with a March Haircut (we'll call him the March Hair for short). When the Alices (Kingsley, Doer Sommer, our plural heroine) came, it was a truly mad tea-party. A half dozin' faculty members were hovering about the Tweedles, yelling their heads off (the hot air in them would then gently float the heads into the clear green sky). And all the while Crocodile Crehan was crooning gruffly through his teeth, Yap loudly at the Junior dope That acts a little dreamier. He only does it 'cause he hopes Someday to be a senior. The Alices bravely took their places behind the Dormouse and the Mad Swede and the March Hair to hear what was going on. Dormouse was reciting poetry. Twinkle, twinkle, Junior dear, 'Tis a wonder that you're here, Up above the world so rare With your head up in the air. Tweedle-dumber obligingly hit the Dormouse with a radiator. Dormouse uttered a half-hearted Twinkle? Twinkle? The pea soup that was spilled on the table answered him by dripping down his neck and replying, Trickle? Trickle-trickle. This artificial perspiration soon woke the Dormouse. Tell us a story, demanded the March Hair. Once upon a time there were three little Wolfs, began the Dormouse, to be original. Their names were Doris, Margaret, and Marjorie, and they lived way up in 33 ?. O, goody, goody, goody, said Alices. A new slant on the old wolf's tale! Well, continued Dormouse, One day Don Wan Durborow came along and became intensely interested. And you know yourself what the moral is—'cause you know what happens to all little boys who cry Wolf! Wolf! Another story! demanded the March Hair. Thish ish a differensh shtory, began Dormouse, stewed prunishly, but the Mad Swede snapped his scarf at the Dormouse and brought him around. Once there was a little Chicken, he began again, who liked to play tricks. One day she put a tack on the chair of her friend the Duck. Dormouse then lapsed into one of his deluded dilemmas (it was de limit, in fact it was de lousy): The bird was tough—let not a quack: It truly was uncanny How that Duck sat upon that tack And never hurt his------ The March Hair and the Mad Swede, disgusted with the Dormouse's stories, had dipped him into the pool of soup. O, don't you know dunking's not nice? ex- claimed the Alices. What was the end of his story? Getting no answer, they figured it must have been How that duck sat upon that tack And never hurt his back. It was later explained that it was an ancient custom-for Mad Swedes and March Hairs and other swim teachers to dunk manager mouses in the pool. But still--it's mighty damp, said Alices. To be sure, answered the March Hair. But our principles are a bit different from yours. We usually make it a practice to lay down our principles before rude newcomers. But they never seem to work. I shouldn't think your principals would work if you did that to them. I shouldn't think they'd stand for it! That’s just it: they don't stand for it—we just told you so. With that the Dormouse was redunked up to the first knuckle, and Alices turned away in disgust, leaving the faculty to fight it out with the dumb belles. Rather stupid of them all, isn't it? smirked Alice. Yes, rather, replied Alice sincerely. At first I had t' figger out what th' doggone thing wuz all about— but I caught on durn quick, you kin bet. The hi-larity really begun when thet Malaprop woman come on stage—boy, she wuz just reekin' with high-brow words she didn't know nothin' about. And then there wuz th' hotheaded old hypocrite with her, Sir Anthony Absolute. Jumpin' Codfish, you should've heerd the old gent work himself up in a frenzy. Him an' th' Malaprop gal wuz makin' things hard for Cap'n Absolute (a durn nice feller) an' his sweetie, Lydia Languish (an' boy, cud she do some fancy languish in'!), but true love won out in the end—ez usual. Anuther good thing 'bout the pro-duction wuz thet it had lots o' purty girls in it. I remember one in perticular, Julia, who wuz a humdinger plus! I sure would've liked bein' Faulkland (thet's the feller she liked), an' from th' sighs of them high school kids sittin' round me, I guess they felt th' same way, too. Thet durned fool, Acres, who let Sir Lucius O'Trigger (he wuz a sly one) get him in a duel with th' Cap'n had me laughin' so hard my false teeth nearly fell out. That Acres feller sure wuz somethin'! Onc't when a feller come out t' say a couple o' lines his wig fell off, an' wuz he surprised! He didn’t know whut t' do so he shouts out his speech an' beats it off th' stage ez if a wildcat wuz chasin' him. Boy, he wuz a show all by hisself! Everybody in th' cast wuz durn fine, but there's one thing I can't figger out, an' that's how th' dickens th' director feller, Mr. Wood, ever got such a no good bunch like th' seniors t' settle down an' make such a swell job of th' thing. Not only thet, but th' scenery paintin’, stage, and lightin' gangs must've done a doggone lot o' work—and I always thought them high school critters worked so hard try in' t' get out o' labor. I guess they're not thet bad. After this compliment Gran'pa paused, then added, But I'll never ferget that feller's face when he saw his wig fly in' off— And at this point, Gran'pa dropped into pleasant dreams of the senior play, leaving us to say that the cast was composed of Edgar Morrison, Mary Jane Mcllroy, John Groel, Eleanor Packard, Janet Lang, Bob Barrett, Roger Tatton, Bob Smith, Marjorie Van Morstein, Evans Valens, Bob Harvey, Larry Crowley, Clay Williams (Knight of the Missing Wig), and Betty Piper. Page seventy-six Page seventy-seven Parnassian Play 9 MIRROR WHEN a mother has three daughters of a marriageable age, and there happen to be some eligible bachelors about, action is the order of the day; but if those three daughters have wills of their own, plus a plentiful supply of pride, and one of the men has been blessed with more than his share of class prejudice, then it is time for innocent bystanders to run for shelter. Parnassian’s presentation, Pride and Prejudice, revolved about such a situation with Eleanor Twitchell winning new laurels through her portrayal of the husband-hunting mother, Mrs. Bennet. Elizabeth Bennet (Ruth Conkling), the girl with the pride, and Mr. Darcy (Larry Crowley), the man with the prejudice, seemed well on the way to be- coming a perfect pair of enemies, when Cupid took a hand in the matter and their fate was sealed. Mr. Cupid experienced little difficulty in arranging a match between the sweet and charming Jane Bennet (in real life, Muriel Wright) and Edgar Smith as Mr. Bingley. Ed seemed to have taken a doctor's degree in the gentle art of love- making. The third sister, Lydia, portrayed by Mary Morrison, beat Cupid at his own game by eloping with the notorious Mr. Wickham (Jack Torbert in disguise). Un- wittingly mixed up in the whole affair was Bob Reeve as Mr. Bennet, the somewhat be- wildered head of the Bennet family, who, nevertheless managed to keep his dignity intact amidst the chaos. The play was rich in comedy, much of which was furnished by the expert per- formance of Boyd Harding as the amusing clergyman, Mr. Collins; Sue Lieblich again distinguished herself, this time through her version of his dictatorial patroness, Lady Catherine. Both received enthusiastic ovations from the audience. The remainder of the cast—Lorraine Davis, Edward Schroeder, Joanne Bent, Donald Stein, Bob Harvey, Cornelia Watson, Robert Barrett, Bob Smith, Doris May Reilay, Miriam Provost, John Bosman, Harry Goas, and Robert Arras—should be proud of their work. The excellent support they gave was the subject of much comment. To this reviewer, Pride and Prejudice was remarkable, not only for fine acting, but for the careful attention given to minute details. Every move had been care- fully planned, so that words and actions were in perfect harmony, and all stage business went off with a smoothness that can result only from painstaking rehearsal. This was particularly noticeable in the scene at Mr. Bingley's during the ball, when Jane Bennet and Mr. Darcy were finding so much to dislike in each other. This same scene is also memorable for the beauty of its setting. While we are on the subject of sets, the stage crew's efficient work in changing them prevented any dead spots between the acts, and consequently added much to the play's effectiveness- A great deal of credit is due Miss Mildred Memory for her experienced direction; her choice of players was particularly good, for everyone seemed to have the part for which he or she was best fitted, and the entire cast really enjoyed acting—which is the real reason why the audience enjoyed watching. Page seventy-eight Page seventy-nine Junior Night 9 MIRROR THE castinets weren't the only things that clicked in the Junior's presentation of The Doings of Diablo, a pleasing combination of music, dancing, and drama in a Spanish mood. The opening moments of the show featured graceful Cristina Relvoza dancing the Rumba, accompanied by the Service Orchestra, followed by Doris Axt's appealing rendition of In Old Madrid, Mary Jean Falk going places with Serenade in the Night, and the big bass voice of Harold Safrin doing things to Toreador Hola ! The chorus, numbering over forty voices, and the orchestra under the direction of Mr. Shenton, presented the ever-popular Rio Rita and gave excellent support to the soloists. A fantastic comedy, The Devil Comes to Alcaraz, in which Lord Lucifer I makes things hot for the tiny village of Alcaraz by refusing to leave without marrying one of its fairest women, was the highlight of the program. Casilda (Peggie Powers), eldest daughter of Dona Josefa, played by Sue Lieblich, finds herself unable to secure a husband. She entreats the devil to teach her how to get her man; being a devil of a fellow, the Prince of Hell gives her a few valuable pointers in this age-old art, and, as a result, Casilda finds herself besieged by offers of marriage. (The girl sitting next to me paid particular attention to Prince Lucifer's advice, and couldn't help murmuring, See, the old devil knows everything! ) Robert Latta's portrayal of the devil was exceptionally well done. Bill McJames was such a success as the speech- making mayor of Alcaraz that we fear he is destined for politics in later life; he's such a nice fellow too. A drama in dance which satirized the theme of The Devil Comes to Alcaraz caught the fancy of the audience. The dancing of Vance Torbert and Dorothy Dann taking the parts of Lucifer and Casilda, was outstanding. Included in the group of dances was La Jota, the Spanish national fiesta dance, and a rhythmic bull fight which gained popular acclaim. The Silly Symphony Bull Fight and the Devil Dance were two of the most amusing and unique dance sequences that have appeared in any Junior Night production. The performance reached a fitting and timely conclusion with a modern dance sequence which depicted the old, tradition-bound Spain, the war-torn Spain of the present, and a future Spain In chains of steel, more rigid than before. The dramatic effectiveness of the dance was heightened by a backdrop which told the story of con- temporary Spain in somber colors, and very effective lighting. Among the faculty members who did their share in making Junior Night a success were dramatic directors, Miss Guest and Mr- Wood, dancing directors Miss Allen and Mrs. Eldon, as well as Messrs. Batchelder and Shenton, who planned and directed the musical portion of the program. The stage and lighting crews worked many hours on the program and were the last ones to be able to leave the building after the performance, and, as usual, are mentioned fast in this review. MARVEL Head Coach Summary of the Season After but two and one-half weeks of practice, the team opened the football season with a crushing victory over Scotch Plains. Scoring in every period, the Marvelmen showed remarkable versatility for such an early date. Against their first real opposition of the season, the Red and Black conquered a smoothly playing Lincoln outfit 14-7. The opening kickoff sailed over the goal line and into Lincoln's end zone, where Bob Lang fell on it for the first touchdown. And with that play the Cougars had the necessary margin of victory. In the third game our gridiron warriors, led by Mike Roman's forty-yard dash for the first score, soundly trounced Morristown 13-0. Although Columbia showed a weak pass offense and defense, the long punts of Red Krumm baffled the visitors every time they threatened to score. On alien ground for the first time, the Gems battled Orange to a scoreless tie. The defenses of both teams were outstanding. Again on home ground, Captain Bob Hildebrand led the undefeated Columbians to victory over Westfield by personally accounting for three touchdowns. On the opening play he raced eighty yards to score, and from then on the Gems tallied at will. Final score: Columbia 3 I—Westfield 13. Against a strong Montclair team, Columbia held the pigskin five times within the Mountaineers' fifteen-yard stripe, but never succeeded in pushing it the yard or two necessary to score; thus another scoreless tie. New Brunswick—a scoreless tie! Columbia had little trouble in stopping the Zebras' all-state back, Andy Beno, but seemed to have lost the power needed to force the ball over the final marker. Against East Orange, the Cougars eeked out a victory by the slimmest of margins. Late in the third period, McMannis downed a beautiful punt by Krumm on the Panther three-yard line. Attempting to kick out of danger, Hansen fumbled and recovered, Colum- bia automatically receiving credit for a safety. Score: Columbia 2—East Orange 0. In their annual Turkey Day classic, the Gems, led by their capta in defeated the unbeaten Cowboys of West Orange 6-0, and definitely annexed the mythical championship of the Oranges. Hildebrand, racing eighty yards in the last two minutes of play, provided the only score in what looked to be a scoreless dead- lock, and so climaxed a great year as captain of Columbia's first unbeaten football team since 1926. Page ninety Girls' Sports THE Girls' Athletic Association sponsors sports for girls. Featuring a widely diversi- fied program, the girls' sports are varied and enjoyable. As a reward for regu- lar attendance or for outstanding ability, teams are chosen and points are given. Not only does the G. A. A. offer girls an opportunity to win their ”C , or their num- erals, but it also promotes ardent competitive spirit, and good sportsmanship, neces- sary in every girl’s school life. The basis for competition is the colorful class banner awarded to the class amassing the greatest number of points. According to the point system, the first award is the numerals for 100 points; for 150 points is an old English C ; and the third year, a banner. If the numerals are won three years, a C is given. For the good rough and tumble game, the girls find soccer a rousing, spirited sport. Bumps and bruises, hard knocks, frequent spills, are all a part of the game. There are four teams chosen, by ability and regularity of attendance: first; second; three a; three b. These teams engage in inter-class games. Milder, but equally as exciting, is soccer’s successor, basketball. Basketball requires technique and accuracy, where soccer needs brute strength, but both are vigorous—and popular. There are home room basketball games which provide activity for all girls. Each home room has a team, and these teams engage in friendly fights for class championship. With as fine a swimming pool as ours, naturally there are many swimming enthusi- asts. These aspiring mermaids, besides having swimming twice a week, also have a swimming team to perform for, and the swimming meets are enjoyed both by partici- pants and spectators. Life saving is taught after school for all those desirous of becoming life savers. Baseball may have originally been a man's game, but now, with all the energy and skill with which the girls play the game, one is led sincerely to doubt this rather rash statement. Wham! It's just the tennis ball hitting the handle of the racquet, as a tennis tournament, with inter-gym class competition, progresses fast and furiously! These are not the only sports in which points can be earned. They are awarded for outside activities. Horse-back riding, one of the best forms of exercise, is popu- lar; and with stables nearby, and trails through the wooded reservation, many take advantage of this fine sport. Another popular means of reducing and exercising is hiking. The reservation offers many paths and trails for hikers, and hills for the more energetic and ambitious climbers. Of all the winter sports, skiing is the most thrill- ing, with tobogganning and skating close seconds. Hockey and sledding provide highly enjoyable winter thrills. The G. A. A. also sponsors social activities. There are four parties every year. The G. A. A., governed by a council consisting of seven members elected from each class, is divided into committees which take charge of these affairs. At Christmas there is a dance for which the Service Orchestra plays. This party is perhaps the most festive and resplendent of all the G. A. A's many successful and entertaining enterprises.
