The year began very successfully with every class working for a prosperous term. The annual magazine contest was held in November as it has been in previous years. Very little enthusiasm was shown and as a result none of the classes netted very much money. Carol Newbill acted as business mana- ger, and Neil Buchannan was high point salesman. ---------Opal Lawrence ----------Ray Anderson -------------Hel Davis -----Patricia Holbrook -----Betty Decker A carnival was sponsored by the entire student body for their benefit on November 14, and it proved to be a huge success. As I've- looked back, I've wondered what my other classmates have acoonr plished in life. Planning to take my vacation early this year, I decided to find out where andiwhat the rest of the graduating class of 1948 were doing. c Leaving my home, in my new master jet-prepelled, I flew toward Hollywood, California. I Over Hollywood I saw the Big Kennedy and Dewitt Motion Pic- ture Studios. Wondering if this could be Dean Kennedy and Bill Dewitt, I stepped at the airport. Finally arriving at the studio, I was led to the private office of Kennedy and 'Debitt studio. Really to myfsurprise there were none other than Bill and Dean. Dean having never found the one and only dream of his life never married, but has kept a roving eye and it is still roving. Bill deciding to settle down, has a nice family of twin boys and girls. Next ,deciding to visit the U. S. C. college, I dropped down over, the football stadiumg there was something very familiar about the coach, so I landed. As I climbed out of my plane I saw a familiar red headed man. Why it was Loy Burgess. Imagine Loy the coach at U. S. C. He tells me that he really had a great team this year, and of course they would have to be with Burgess coaching Loy also said he was married and has-three fine boys. He is very proud of them as they look just like him. Coming up the coast I had to stop in San Fransico. Deciding to have my hair done, I went in search of a beauty salon. Across the street l saw a big sign, UOpal's Beauty' Salonn. That name rang back an old men- ory, and investigating further I found that the owner was none 'other than my old chum, Opal Lawrence. Spending the after- with her, I found that Opal had, married a certain graduate of C. H. S. and only kept her Beauty Salon as a hobby. Opal, planning to take a vaca- tion about that time, decided to continue along with me. Flying toward 'Washington something went flying past us at a great speed. Contacting by radio, we found that it was Larry Hanner. He was just com- ing back from a trip to Mars where he had been doing research for the U. S. Government. Larry had invented a new rocketship that would go to the moon and Mars, and was in the prime of his life, still single. we used the Columbia River for our guide and followed it until we reached Hunters. I set my ship down on the football field of oldi Columbia High, and walking to the main street we hailed a taxi. As the driver stepped out to open the door for us he explained nHe1lo,Gir1s I believe we have met before . He took off his hat and bowedg making us roar with laughter for it Wes none other than Mr. Hall, ex4janitor of C. H. Se We were very happy to see him.so he drove us through the park and we talked over old times. He said decided to take life a easier so he just rode he had little around day after day. After Mr. Hall dropped us off at San and Jo's Confectionaryg we entered and had a root'beer float and then headed back to our plane. we boarded and flow toward Gifford to visit Bette Miles and her family. She has five charming boys and is very happy with her marriage career. After leaving Bette's we were winging our way back toward Hunters, and we saw on a very high peak a little old shack. There was something very fa- miliar about the figure in the doorway. Droping down we saw it was no-eno, but Betty DeWitt. Betty had become a lady-hermit, and sho was at the present writing a novel on NHUW to Destroy Insects! MENW As our time was running short, Opal and I flew back toward California. I suppose you are wondering what has happened to meg well, believe it or not I finally de- cided to settle down, and am very happy. As for my husband, that's your guess. Carol Newbill 1 1 . V .71 - P -gf! Z Hay back on September 5, 1944, October twelfth proved an twenty-five bash ul .fresh en eventful date for the meek trudged up the hill to the big brick school house, better known as Columbia High School, where they had good intentions of spending the best four years of their lives. I am sure each one of us feels that they have been our best years too. YG very dutifully elected class officers as follows: Carol Newbill, Presidentg Loy Burgess, 'Vice President: Berneice Buscher, Secretary, Betty DeWitt, Treasurerg Bette Dobson, Reporterg Kr. Lewis was our advisor for the year. Much to the enjoyment of the upper classmen, we were initia- ted on 'October third, and just to show that we were good sports we soon gave a party for the udearn sophomores. Altha Dennison and Jett Fisk left us shortly to take up their dchooling elsewhere. Dorothy Kilgore and Kenneth Lakey also left to attend school in other locations. Marilyn Ham ons and John Pratt joined us at the close of the first semester. At the end of the torm there were only twenty-one of us. On September 4, 1945, when we began our sophomore year, we found our number had decreased even more. Miss Ulrigg advised our 'class with the following officers in chargeg President, Loy Burgessg Vice President, Betty Dewittg Secretary, Carol Newbillg Treasurer, Berneice Buscherg Reporter, Almeda Fisk. freshmen when we initiated them. They gave us a return party on December twelfth so they. must have enjoyed our little schemes. At mid-semester, Joyce Crain. and Paul Hammons entered our class, increasing the total number of members to sixteen. Loy Burgess, Harold Spencer, and Corky Bishop took active part in sports. we took active part in the magazine contest with Corky Bishop as our high salesman. The class ,took in S21 for its treasury. Leo Darrow left us near the close of the year and went to work. Sure enough, September ZJ 1946, found us back again. Our enrollemnt was even smaller with only twelve in number. Opal Kennewick, Lawrence from Washington, being the eonly new student. lb took active part in the magazine contest. Near the first of the year Carol Newbill left to attend school in Spokane, Washington. Our junior play, uMama's Baby Boyn, was given December 18, with the entire class in the cast. It was sponsored by Mr. Arisman and was given in the school auditorium.- Ccontinued on next pagel The Junior Prom was ' given March 26, in honor of the seniors. The gymnasium was de- corated in pink and blue, the senior's colors, and music was furnished by the uColumbians2 Betty Singer and Loy Burgess were chosen nSweetheart Couplen. Almeda Fisk was married in March and she left to take up housekeeping near Davenport. Joyce Crain was also married in the latter part of the year, but she finished out the school term. Officers for the year were as follows: President, Loy Burgess Vice President, Betty Dewitti Secretary and Treasurer, Bette Dobsong Reporten Opal Lawrenceg Advisor, kr. Arisman. September 2, 1947, nine seniors marched in and took their seats next to the windows and looked around to see if any-' one was missing. Much to our surprise our number had de- creased still more than the previous year. Officers were elected as follows: President, Opal Lawrenceg Vice President, Larry Hannerg Secretary, Carol Newbillg Treasurer, Dean Kennedy: and our advisor for the year was Mr. Davis. October 31, was one of the biggest dates of the year when we gave a Harvest Ball. The gymnasium was decorated very artistically in autumn colors. Another dance was given for our benefit at the Greenwood Grange Hall, January 31. Both dances helped to raise our class funds which were pretty low. October ll, we journeyed to Spokane to have our individual pictures taken at the Dorian Studio. Most of us were satis- fied. Ke gave our play, nMeet The Husbandn, April 6, with a large crowd attending. we had a wonderful time on our four day nsneaku. lk journeyed to Portland. Our class took an active part in the carnival last fall. Loy Burgess and Betty DeWitt were chosen King and Queen candidates for the occasion. Baccalaureate Services were held Kay 25, in the Presbyterian Church in Hunters. May 25, Commencement Exercises took place in the high school. The juniors did the decorating which was very beautiful. The time has come at last ' When We bid you all geodgbye. Our years are new completed Here at old Columbia High., I introduce to you The seniors one by one. May you still remember them After they have gene. First is a Burgess Loy is his name. In the line of sports He puts all to shame. Second is Bill Dewitt He's our handy man.
