TIME 1 27, 51,3 , ,, . 1 I'rn doin' what Ihel is right I'rn ready zflneed tofight In the modern way In the Modern Day Under the Reagan adminbtration, regimes which were threatened by terrorism became eligible for assistance regardless of their human rights record. Congress increased economic and military aid to the war-stricken country of El Salvador and dis- patched military advisors for training Salvadoran armies. The public reaction to Reagan's policies was a mounting fear of another Vietnam. Reagan called upon the media to publicize the Soviet's involvement in El Salvador and to report on Soviet arms shipments. Despite the widespread public unrest, the State Department stood hy its basic conclusions that we should continue our aid to the government of El Salvador. While the world's attention was focused on the Poland crisis, Israel's prime minister Begin called a meeting of Israel's Parliament to announce his plan to seize the Golan Heights area from Syria. After six hours of debate, the measure was passed, and before the world even knew it, Begin had rammed through the de facto annexation of another slice of occupied Arab territory. Washington reacted by suspending the U.S.-Israeli strategic-cooperation agreement. The immediate ef- fect was to halt plans for joint naval maneuvers in the eastern Mediterranean and to hold up U .S. pur- chases of 200 million of Israeli-made military equip- ment. The President feels that this move may have been intended to outflank militant Sinai settlers who threaten to sabotage Syrian's withdrawal from the V .fish-f..,f ps., I JJMJJJ. s I Heights in the Spring of '82. Gotta face up to this lik Can 't let it get the best of me H I make a sacrzfce That 's the way it has to be. On October 6, 1981, at a military parade in honor of the eighth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, President Anwar Sadat was assassinated by members of the Al Tigfir wal Hijra, an offshoot of E gypt' s Woulawed Moslim Brotherhood. The assassination not only left the Mideast facing dangerous political void but also deprived the world of one of the few leaders whose bold imagination and personal courage seemed to have made a difference in history. Americans especially felt a sharp sense of loss. We can only hope that Sadat's successor, Hosni Mubarak, will have the courage to continue taking steps necessary to achieve peace in the Middle East. Like a motor in overdrive I Rel good and I fel alive I got no need to beg or borrow Got a shortcut to tomorrow One of the year's happiest moments came on july 29, when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were mar- ried in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. There were 2,500 wedding guests at the church, while 750 million people around the world watched the ceremony on television. The couple spent their honeymoon at the Broodlands, a Hampshire estate of Charles's granduncle. ln November it was announced that a baby was due in june of I 982. JS' Q. .cob QQ. Ginna Power Plant at Ontario, N.Y. was quickly cor- rected and caused no real problems, the expected cost of S250,000 to S400,000 a day for replacement power was fuel for countless protests against nuclear power. The major concern for the financially-dying Nuclear industry is who will pay for staggering expenses such as these. Ultimately, the cost is passed on to the consumer. A source of controversy here in South Texas was the Nuclear Power plant under construction in Bay City. The plant brought the question of nuclear power to the front door of Columbia students. Cause I 'm here to stay In the Modern Day While people from nursery school to nursing homes were being Izodized and Calvinized, an aerobic dance craze caught fire in the country. Influenced by actress jane Fonda, whose recent movie On Golden Pond received ten academy award nominations, aerobic dance classes sprung up all over the country, even in public shools! While the boys and men played Pac Man in the game room, the females jumped, kicked, and danced to such tunes as Physical f0livia Newton- johnj or Why Do Fools Fall in Love fDiana Rossf.
