Solidarity was an unforgettable word of 1982. Solidarity stood for the unity of a small band of Polish workers led by Lech Walesa. The desire for freedom that motivated this tiny group reached out to encompass the entire western world. To thwart the efforts of this movement, the Polish government pulled the plug on all communications, and even censored mail. Gas stations were closed and air and land travel was limited. The entire society was paralyzed with schools recessed and withdrawals from banks limited. Retention camps were set up across the country. The government claimed 4,000 Poles were being held in such camps while the Union claimed 40,000 were in captivity. For 650 striking Major League Baseball Players an average salary of S173,000 a year was not sufficient! Seven hundred games were cancelled and players lost S28 million in salary in a fifty day strike, the longest in baseball history. The strike ended on july 31, 1981, andplay resumed on Aug. 9, 1981, with the All-Star game in Cleveland. President Reagan's policy of catching up with the Soviet Union by military strength makes it virtually impossible to halt the nuclear weapon buildup. The President is backed by many Americans who feel peace can come only through power. However, the arms build up is strengthening a network of anti- nuclear groups around the nation and world. History was made on july 7, 1981, when President Reagan announced his nomination of-judge Sandra Day O'Connor to be the first woman justice of the United States Supreme Court. She was officially con- firmed by a 99-0 vote of the United States Senate and sworn in on September 25, 1981. For the fourth year in a row, the number of states having ratified the proposed Equal Rights Amend- ment stood at 35. Three more votes are required by june 30, 1982 in order to pass the amendment. The Dallas Cowboys almost made the Super Bowl in 1982, but in the deciding playoff game between Dallas and San Francisco, the 49'ers came out vic- torious. Then in the Super Bowl, led by joe Mon- tana, the 49'ers quick-thinking and good-looking quarterback, San Francisco beat the Cincinatti Begals in a 26-21 victory.
