In the past few months every member of the annual staff has contributed time and effort to make the 1951 COLUIXIBIAN the best yet. Our annual is the second book with the title of COLUINIBIAN in nineteen years. For the staff members the 3:15 bell meant several additional hours of work in mak- ing up pages, identifying pictures, or writing copy. Despite the won 5, lost 7, record, Coach Lawhorne fielded a better team than the record shows. Lawhorne graduated from U.S.C. in 1944, and coached the U.S.C. Biddies in 1946. This being his first year at CHS, Coach Lawhorne says that with the junior and Sophomore material he had this season, a much better team can be expected in 1951. By the excellent work Lawhorne did in 1950, a better team is not to be expected but it is assured. Coach Hodge, who was very active in both high school and college football, put together a concrete line despite the relative light weight of the boys who came out. In 1951 Coach Hodge will coach the Eau Claire Football Team. Team Spirit Beats Dreher Immediately following the Columbia Caps' 19 to 6 victory over our closest, tradi- tional rivals, Drcher, our team is shown in their dressing room congratulating each other and their two line coaches. Don Clark Dick Babington Sonny Hinson B.-C. 12 The game season under their new coach, Ernie downing B-C 13 to 12. Sonny Hinson and 1 e ns. Lloyd Alcorn's toe provided the winning the Caps. CAPS 19- Greenwood 2 Ernie's Demonsl' scored a triumphant victory over the Greenwood Emeralds for their second straight win of the year. Gene Berry raced 54 yards for the first touchdown in the second quarter and joe Ding Dong Bell plowed over from the four in the third quarter. Sonny Hinson intercepted a pass and ran 100 yards for the final six points. CAPS 0-Florence 14 Florence brought a fast, hard, and strong team to Columbia's Melton Field on September 22 and defeated our Caps 14 to 0. CAPS 7-Sumter 20 The Capitals lost again to a foreign foe when Sumter took a 20 to 7 team victory over a game Columbia eleven. CAPS 0 - Spartanburg 35 The Up-staters had a powerful line that halted both joe Bell and Gene Berry, who usually go throughthe line. Thus the offensive minded Spartans handed us a 35 to 0 set back. CHS 12 -North Charleston 25 The Capitals, losing their fourth straight game, lost their homecoming game to North Charleston 25 to 12 on Melton Field, October 13. The score at the half was 14 to 12 in favor of North Charleston. Don Clark and Hjoltin' jimmy Mallios scored the points for the Capitals. CHS 13 -Hartsville 12 The Capitals finally broke back into the win column with a 13 to 12 victory joe Bell Bobby Jennings Lynn Hendricks Lloyd Alcorn Buddy Coleman john Bernadine C. VV. jones Victor Flake George Buck Billy Seel jim Mallios Henry Coleman over The Red Foxes of Hartsville. Ding Dong Bell was the spark plug for the Caps as time after time he broke through for considerable gains. CHS 38 -Greer 6 Dick Babington, jimmy Mallios, Sonny Hinson, and joe Bell proved too much for the Greer team as they romped to a convincing 38 to 6 victory. Coach Lawhorne cleared the bench in order to give the reserves a chance to play. CHS 0 -Parker 27 A favored Parker eleven ended our Caps' two game winning streak, by blank- ing us 27 to 0 in Greenville. CHS 7-Rock Hill 26 joe Bell scored late in the last quarter for the Caps to keep us from being blanked again by Rock Hill. Buck George of Rock Hill, a Shrine Bowl candidate, powerhoused the Bearcats over the determined but lacking Capitals. CHS 6- Charleston Z4 The Columbia Capitals waited again until the last quarter to start their scoring drives and ended up on the short end of a 24 to 6 score. Tony Gialenios, usually a center on the team, passed to Don Clark for the Capital's only score. The game ended with the Caps on the Bantams' 15 yard line. CHS 19- Dreher 6 With Underdog written all over them, the Caps put together hard running and pinpoint passing. to dump the Dreher Blue Devils 19 to 6, at the new City Schools' Stadium. Dick Babington scored first on a five yard dash over tackle in the first quarter. joe Ding Dong Bell opened the second half with a 45 yard run through the Dreher defense, Don Clark scored the last Caps' touchdown when Bobby jennings blocked a Dreher punt and Don picked it up and ran 20 yards for the touchdown. The score of 19 to 6 showed that the new coach, Ernie Lawhorne, and the boys had what it takes to beat the overconfident Blue Devils. But as the season drew to a close, the bottom fell out, with aches, pains, and Hu interfering. The Caps opened with I3. C. winning easily 65 to 35. liau Claire was next but the Caps pulled through in good style, winning 34 to 31. The Capitals won the next two contests by defeating Olympia 30 to 29, and VVinnsboro 27 to 26. Richmond Academy, however, handed the Caps their hrst defeat of the new season by the score of 48 to 38. University High and Dreher followed suit by downing Columbia High 46 to 28, and 58 to 48 respectively. The following week the Caps came back to defeat liau Claire for the second time 40 to 33. The Caps dropped their next three games to strong opponents, Olympia 50-32, University High 62-57, and Richmond Academy 28-35. The Caps ' last victory of the season came when .lack Wofford hit 24 points to lead the Caps to a 53-44 win over Sumter. The last seven games were rough for the Caps as they dropped all seven, due to a flu epidemic among the team. At times there were no more than six or seven men dressed for a game. The rest were held out by sickness. The Caps lost to l3. C. 41-30, Dreher 47-36, to Spartanburg by the scores of 60-43 and 60-50. The final defeat was to Sumter 77-33.
