Miss Congeniality We, the Class of 1987, have come a long way since we were freshmen. As freshmen, we were the top class at Lake City Junior High-East. Our class officers were: Doyle Rooks, President, Barbie Kemp, Vice-president; Sharma Atkinson, Secretary; Tracy Banner, Treasurer; and Stephanie Nettles, Reporter. We eventually outgrew being Fal- cons. Our promotion placed us in a completely different environ- ment—Columbia High School— and presented us with new chal- lenges. Becoming sophomores was a mixed blessing. True, we were Ti- gers at last, but we were at the bottom, looking up. The upper- classmen enjoyed pointing out that the word sophomore means “unwise.” Many of us had trouble finding our classes—all seven of them —during the first week. Be- ing called last for assemblies was not great, either. Nevertheless, things began to look up after a while. We proved to the upper- classmen that sophomores could win Homecoming. Class rings were delivered before the end of the year. Once we could find our way around, the campus was defi- nitely an improvement over the junior high. We had a broader and more interesting range of classes. As for the cafeteria, well, some things never change. Class officers were: Sharma Atkinson, President; Melissa May, Vice- president; Lori Howell, Secre- tary; and Sheila Shaw, Treasurer. 1987 By our junior year, we were well adjusted to life at Colum- bia High. Some of us were amused watching the new sophomores experience the same confusion and ridicule that we did the year before. Al- though we were only the mid- dle class, our junior year was not without its good points. Half of our high school educa- tion was behind us. Our junior year marked the time when most of us had become old enough to drive to school. Homecoming time saw the Class of 1987 win the competi- tion for the second year in a row. At last, we could go to the Prom without needing upper- classmen to go with us. Class officers were: Sharma Atkin- son, President; Bryan Fore- man, Vice-president; Lori Howell, Secretary; and Sheila Shaw, Treasurer. The fall of 1986 saw us as the new seniors. We finally had the senior privileges we had waited three years for: first-in first- out, leaving campus for lunch, final exam exemptions, and wearing shorts near the end of the year. Becoming seniors also meant dual enrollment for some. Grad Nite and Bacca- laureate awaited us near the end of the year. Our first step into the real world, the end of our four-year journey through high school, will be our Gradu- ation Night. Class officers: Sharma Atkinson, President; Tammy Royals, Vice-presi- dent; Stephanie Nettles, Secre- tary; Sheila Shaw, Treasurer; and Tia Barrington, Liaison Officer. We are now at the top, looking down. We will soon fin- ish high school, but as long as we put forth the same effort in our future as we have in the past, the Class of 1987 will al- ways be on top. Richards, Columbia High Principal Students, Whatever years are allotted to each of us, no one ever knows ahead of time; that is one of the “sweet mysteries” of life. One thing is certain, however. When a moment passes by it is gone forever, and nothing can recall it. So it is with the years in high school, which, for our Seniors, are only memories now. For some, these remembrances are tender and warm; for others they are bland, neutral, perhaps even colorless. In Shakespeare’s words, however, “what’s done cannot be undone.” Nonetheless, there is a large-looming future awaiting all of you which ought to be seized aggressively so that your lives will be filled with time well spent and years well lived. Take the future and let it be yours; make the world and your place in it what they ought to be. Fondly and with best wishes always, Dr. Russell L. Ann was a sister, a daughter, a friend, a Senior, a Tiger—Ann was one of us. Probably the most important thing in her life was her relationship with Columbia High and the people here. Graduating from C.H.S. and being part of volleyball, softball, and the senior class meant as much to her as a family. She had made no plans beyond graduation from Columbia High. Ann was always cheerful, ready to help whenever it was needed, independent in action, and unfailingly dependable. She will be remembered whenever 1 hear someone say, “Hey, what’s new? , or Go, Lady Tigers.” Those phrases seemed to be part of her. But she will also be remembered by all of us for what she gave us friendship, kindness, love—and realistically, a sense of our own mortality. Students attend classes in the morning (from 7:15 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.) and work in an office in the afternoons. It is a co- operative effort between school, student, and commu- nity. During school, students take required subjects 1st, 2nd, and 3rd periods; during early bird class and 4th peri- od class students are enrolled in CBE courses: Business Communications and Cleri- cal Office Practice. Topics covered include typing, busi- ness english, office proce- dures, spelling, business math, calculators, job inter- view, human relations, word processing, and filing. Four credits are earned during the year for CBE. Students are graded for their on-the-job perfor- mance each six weeks grad- ing period by their supervi- sor. This grade is recorded on the students report cards. CBE activities during the year include money-making projects, CBE employer ap- preciation banquet in May, early-bird breakfast at the end of the year, participation in FBLA district competi- tion, and other activities. Among the celebrities who died in 1986 were singer Kate Smith who died June 17 of respiratory arrest at the age of 79; Benny Goodman, the King of Swing, died June 13, apparently of cardiac arrest; James Cagney, one of Holly- wood’s famous toughguys, died March 30 at the age of 86; and Ted Knight, best known for his role in the television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died August 26 of cancer at the age of 62. (NYS 41) NEW YORK, Oct. 27—SWEET VICTO- RY—New York Mets Gary Carter is lifted in the air by relief pitcher Jesse Orosco following the Met 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the seventh game of the World Series at New York’s Shea Stadium. A drought spread throughout the Southeast during 1986. It was the worst dry spell on record. At the peak of the drought, crops wilted from southern Pennsylvania all the way into northern Florida. Even after some rain, many farmers in the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia were on the brink of ruin. IT COL OLIVER NORTH DONALD REGAN President Ronald Reagan's reputation was severely crippled in late 1986 when he supposedly secretly violated his policy against negotiating with terrorists. He, or some men under (Poindexter, North, Regan, or Casey) allegedly sold arms to Iran in exchange for Iran's help in freeing some terrorist held hostages in the Middle East. Miss Tennessee Kellye Cash, the grand- niece of country star Johnny Cash, was crowned Miss America 1987. She received the crown from outgoing Miss America Su- san Akin. Britain's Prince Andrew married red- haired English commoner Sarah Ferguson in July at Westminster Abbey in a specta- cle that mustered the pomp and glory of Britain’s 920-year old monarchy. Andrew is the queen's second son and fourth in line to the throne. Caroline Kennedy, who captured Ameri- ca’s heart as a little girl romping through the White House, married Edwin Schloss- berg, a New York businessman and artist in Hyannis Port, Mass., on July 19, 1986. They call it “crack” on the East Coast and “rock” on the West Coast. Whatever its name, this refined, smokable form of co- caine may be the most addictive narcotic ever sold on the streets of America. Deep under Lake Nios in northwestern Cameroon, the earth belched. A bubble of scalding gas rose to the surface and the wind carried it across the land. Within min- utes, more than 1700 people were dead, burned by steam and choked by carbon dioxide and toxic gases. Among the casual- ties was a large group of cows. U.S. Air Force and Navy jets attacked five targets inside Libya under cover of dark- ness in April, 1986, delivering a response to what President Reagan called the “mon- strous brutality” of Libyan-backed terror- ism. Among the targets was the Libyan Na- val Academy, shown above, located in a suburb of Tripoli. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Reykjavik, Iceland, for a two-day summit in October to discuss arms control. The two leaders reached an impasse on testing of the U.S. Star Wars weaponry. After 20 years of ruling without serious challenge, Phillipine presi- dent Ferdinand E. Marcos was forced from office amid charges of corruption and scandal. The new president, Corazon Aquino, was faced with political and economic turmoil. The president signed into law in October the broadest tax overhaul in a generation. The bill cut taxes for most workers while paring some prized deductions and boosting the tax burden on corpora- tions. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, an Illinois Democrat, headed the House tax overhaul delegation and Sen. Bob Packwood, an Oregon Republican, headed the delegation from the Senate. meet us at tne corner RONSONET ® BUICK - GMC TRUCK 810 E DUVAL ST. LAKE CITY.
