Columbian Columbia High School Lake City, FL Volume 33 Introduction 1 Introduction 3 ft Villi Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they’re Introduction 5 6 Introduction In order to live free and hap- pily, you must sacrifice boredom. It is not always an easy sacrifice. 10 Introduction Introduction 11 Don ’i be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends. 12 Introduction Terri Cruce Reigns as Miss CHS 78-79 Terri Cruce not only received the title of Miss CHS, but was also named Miss Congeniality. Below: The five finalists for the Miss CHS pageant were Terri Cruce who twirled and danced, Claudia Owens who sang and played the piano, Dee Dee Mikesell who did a monologue, Kellie Wolford who danced, and Teri Sherrod who danced. Each girl was judged on their poise and speaking ability. 1. Terri Cruce, Miss CHS 2. Features 13 Miss CHS Candidates 78-79 The auditorium was filled with the ex- citement as Terri Cruce was crowned the new Miss CHS for 1978-79. The sixteen contestants participated in eve- ning gown, sportswear, and talent com- petition. Each girl had to submit an es- say for the judges. They also had to be evaluated by their teachers. 14 Features Sandy Wheeler Crowned Queen Charlene Woods Homecoming is probably the busiest week in the life of a Co- lumbia High student. Along with all the other activities we have a few girls chosen by their class to represent them during the half time festivities. The Homecoming Queen must be a senior and after being voted on by the senior class, she is then voted on by the football players. Representing the senior class were Sandy Wheeler, Tina Lee, and Dee Dee Mikesell. Chosen by the junior class were Nellene Crusaw and Tammy Lee. Selected by the sophomores were Betty Douglas and Lisa Waters. The freshmen attendants were Charlene Woods and Audrey Fluellen. Features 15 Seniors Float to First Place Many hours of hard work went into planning, preparing, and finishing the floats. It was Monday Oct. 15 at 3:30 when it all began. It wasn’t until Friday at noon when they were fin- ished and pulled out of the shelters. The floats were judged as they were admired by all the spectators. Al- though all the floats were unique, the Seniors placed 1st, Sophomores 2nd, Juniors 3rd, and with a first time effort, Freshmen 4th. |c A as w Juniors “Grease” the Stage If you liked the movie “Grease”, you would have loved the juniors’ 1st place skit, “Homecoming Night.” All of the skits were imaginative and different. Second place went to the seniors who did a take off on “Cinderella.” Third place was “Mork and Mindy” per- formed by the sophomores. The fresh- men portrayed “The Wide World of Sports” for fourth place. 1. Junior first place skit. 2. Senior second place skit. 3. Sophomore third place skit. 4. Freshman fourth place skit. Features 17 Seniors pull their weight ... Homecoming Week would not be com- plete without Field Day. Athletes from each class are recognized as they com- pete in various events. They are chal- lenged to anything from throwing eggs to eating pies. Field Day really brings out the rivalry between classes. Enthu- siasm is shown and unity is created as each class struggles to be on top. Jody Hansen Greg Bishop Eddie Robertson 18 Features to make Homecoming great in 78 Jeff Simmons and Jerry Craig David Boutwcll and Carol Buie Students look forward each year to the fun and excitement of Homecoming Week. It is a tradition and very much a part of a high school student. Each class prepares a skit to present and a float to build which reflects the theme of Homecoming Week. Events are scheduled daily and points are awarded according to class participa- tion. This year as always, one could not ask for a better school to be a part of or a finer football team to support. Paxon Eagle Features 19 Columbia High Sweethearts Robin Muskewitz—D.E.C.A. Sweetheart Various clubs in our school select sweethearts to represent their club. The members of these clubs select them. They have the ability to put every- thing into its proper perspective. They accept you as you are, help you grow by explaining their knowledge, and let you decide what works for you. The two of you are loved and appreciated by all. Thanks for being there when you were needed. 38 Dedication things done! Tina Lee was chosen Miss Columbian 1979. Through the push and shove of horrible cooperation among faculty members and the hassles of meeting tough deadlines, she has shown matu- rity, decisiveness, and a consistently mellow approach. Tina worked hard and enthusiastically as editor of the club section. Miss Columbian 39 This year the Senior class play was “That Girl From Texas”. The play was directed by Mrs. Diane Ellis. It was a story about 3 girls who live in an apartment, each had their own boyfriend. One day these girls fell head over heels in love with the rich man across the street. That girl from Texas moves in and wins over the 3 boys’ hearts. Then the rich man across the street showed no interest in the 3 girls and left them out in the cold. This man is Aaron Johnson who broke his knee during a varsity football game. Senior Lettermen 74 Sports 1. Willie Wintons 14. 2. Melvin Wintons 20. 3. Ricky Jernigan 12. 4. Kenny Gaines 34. 5. The golf team is really hitting the ball this year. The varsity golf team is lack- ing in support from the student body and faculty, which seems quite unusual since golf is a very exciting sport. Coach Owens has done a great job in teaching these young men the finer points of the game and he should be congratulated for the great seasons his teams have turned out in the past. The team looks very good this year consid- ering every person on the team is re- turning from last year. The golf team should look very good next year also because they should lose only one player, Mark Phillips. The sec- tion editors exemplify this trait: Clubs—Tina Lee, Seniors—Lisa Bass, Sports Deonna Brown, Under- classmen—Donna Larson, Academics— Roger Lawton, Ads—Kelly Carson, Features, Janie Minor, and Faculty Claudia Owens. Other than “Super- woman” Tina Lee, section editors couldn’t do their jobs without the help of staff members: Angie Crews, Mari- lyn Giebeig, Vickie Windham, Marga- ret Bach, Lorri Bonderenko, Buddy Hines, Kathy Huchingson, Mary Kah- lich, Melanie Lane, Laurie Page, Tod Pauley, Marcia Sheely, Cathy Towns- end, Karen Tweeddale, Selina Goble, Jody Hansen, and Joyce Williams. The business manager. Nan Huggins has never slown down. The best word to describe Nan with is, “dependable”. Our advisor. Diane Harrison is simply stupendous. A plug must be put in for us, Tammy Boutwell and Roger Brun- ner, the co-editors, we do a pretty good job too. In closing a special thanks to all the teachers for being so under- standing and letting us out of class. Potpourri, the new literary maga- zine was designed to reflect the stu- dents’ ideals and talents. Poems and short stories abounded throughout the book, along with artwork to illustrate them. The co-editors this year were JoAnn Howell and Mary Jones Clark. With no help or staff members, hard work and lonely hours were ahead for these two hard working daring coharts. Clubs 151 rvii 152 John Paul II Charms the Crowds Karol Cardinal Wojtyla began assert- ing a vigorous personal style almost as soon as the white palium of office was draped around his shoulders. He is now known as Pope John Paul 11, age 58, who is the 263rd successor to St. Peter and spiritual leader of some 700 million Roman Catholics. More than 200,000 people were packed into St. Peter’s Square when Pope Paul received the ceremonial vestment. As the cardinals of the church filed for- ward to pay him homage, he spoke warmly and at length with each. He addressed the crowd fluently in five languages, then plunged into their midst to shake outstretched hands. John Paul II has charmed the hearts of many since his vestment. He has also set his own firm, unpredictable style. The Pope is concerned for all and plans to do all he can for the goodwill of the Catholics. 154 Historical Close, Yet So Far Away Carter Administration is more pessi- mistic about the outcome of the Wash- ington peace talks between Egypt and Israel than it has been since negotia- tions began. “Right now there is psy- chological warfare,” said a ranking Is- rael official. “And only the side with the stronger nerves will manage.” There is growing concern at the White House that the talks might actually fail. Anwar Sadat gloomily remarked that he would not be astonished to see the negotiations break down. The draft peace treaty was “75% to 80%” complete. The two sides had reached agreement on such crucial is- sues as the end of the 30-year state of war and the establishment of relations, the exchange of ambassadors, the loca- tion of boundaries, the placement of troops and the role of United Nations forces, and Israeli navigation rights in the Gulf of Suez. Egypt and Israel had also reached a meeting of minds on the future of two Israel-built airbases in Sinai and the number and size of Egyptian fortifications in the desert peninsula. The main obstacle is finding the right language for the thorniest problem of all: the “linkage” between the treaty and further negotiations toward a wider peace between Israel and its other Arab neighbors. The Israeli Cab- inet rejected a compromise proposal that Premier Menachem Begin sent to them through his Defense Minister. They felt the linkage between the Is- raeli-Egyptian treaty and broader peace negotiations was too strong. No- body was angrier about the Israeli’s ac- tion than Jimmy Carter. The linkage is particularly important to Sadat, who is trying to convince the moderate Arab states, and especially Saudi Arabia, that he is not selling out the Arab cause but is working for an overall set- tlement. A second issue holding up the Washington negotiations concerns Sinai Oil. On balance it seemed likely that the Egyptians and the Israelis would be able to resolve their remaining differ- ences in time to sign the treaty by the deadline agreed upon at Camp David. When agreement is reached, the prin- cipals are expected to celebrate the his- toric occasion by staging twin ceremo- nies in Cairo and Jerusalem. Vice-President. Looks Like We Made it! There you are lookin’ just the same as you did, last time I touched you and, here I am close to gettin’ tangled up in- side the thought of you—Do you love him as much as I love her and will that love be strong when old feelings start to stir. Looks like we made it—Left each other, on the way to another love, Looks like we made it or I thought so, ’till today until you were there every- where and all I could taste was love the way we made it. Love’s so strange playin’ hide and seek, with hearts and always hurtin’ And we’re the fools standin’ close enough to touch those burnin’ memo- ries. And if I hold you for the sake of all those times love made us lose our minds—Could I ever let you go ... Oh, no we made it left each other, on the way to another love, Looks like we made it Or I thought so, ’till today un- til you were there everywhere ... And all I could taste was love the way we made it ... 162 Seniors Wanda Adams Daniel Adel Georgia Alford Charlene Anderson Theresa Anthony Charles Arnold Margaret Bach Mildred Barber Lisa Bass Sue Bass James Bell I yronc Bell Jeff Berry Cheryl Bessinger Kenny Bethea Buddy Blanton 164 Seniors Mark Blair Lome Bondcrenko David Bouiwell Tammy Boutwell Wendy Boutwell Carolyn Bowden Anita Bowles Brian Boyette Dwayne Bradley Juanita Bradley Wayne Brannon Rose Brillhart Tanya Brink Vera Broom Debbie Brown Dconna Brown Seniors 165 wm Jan Brown LaVonda Brown Ronnie Brown Theresa Brown Roger Brunner Edith Bryant Angie Bryne Carol Buie Cindy Bundy Doug Burch Tim Burke Buddy Burton Marie Burney Barbie Canaday Donna Carmichael KcHy Carson 166 Seniors Anita Carter Gloria Carter Sherry Carver Craig Cason Larry Charles Dorothy Chatman Donald Cherry David Cheesman Timmy Clyatt Tim Cobb Cythe Cockcroft Sheila Cole Patricia Coleman Dale Cone Gwendolyn Cook Sharon Cook Seniors 167 David Coxe Jerry Craig Karen Crawford Dwayne Cray James Creighton Allen Crews Terr)' Crews Terri Cruce Kristi Cummings Mike Dace John Davenport Donna Davis Rhonda Davis Rosa Davis Darlene Dees Lucy Dekle 168 Seniors Carol Denmark Cherry Desiura Dennis Dicks Sharon Dicks Ricky Disbrow Robbie Disbrow Carla Dixon Dale Douglas Jean Downing Daniel Duckwiller Deena Duke Teresa Edwards Cindy Eichelsderfer Donna Ellis Susan Ellis Steve Erskin Seniors 169 Donna Falgout Wanda Farr Libby Farrell Sarah Feagle Yvone Flemmings Randy Fletcher Anita Flowers Clay Foe Melody Fontana Debbie Ford Ron Freeman Darlene Gambles Margie Garbett Alton George Steven Glowacki Eddie Graham 170 Seniors Laura Green Sandra Griffin Terri Guthrie Sherry Hale Daniel Hall Debbie Hall Verlan Hall Jody Hansen Cindy Harden Carrie Galye Harden Robert Harrel Keith Harris Leslie Harris Bobby Harry Connie Hartley James Hill Seniors 171 Buddy Hines Carl Hodson Sue Hodson Donna Holland Mayse Holliday Carolyn Holton Attoya Honer Shellye Hook JoAnn Howell Kathy Huchingson Nan Huggins Mark Hunter Eddie Jackson Gloria Jackson Derrick James Michael James 172 Seniors Michael Jeffers Ricky Jernigan Lori Johns Aaron Johnson Brenda Johnson Jackie Johnson Vemice Johnson Alan Jones Bonnie Jones Mary Jones Derrick Jones Mary Lou Jordan Barry Joye Mary Kahlick Mcl Kelly Ricky Kennington Seniors 173 Mike Killgorc Dale King Lisa Klinepeter Kirk Koon Kristi Kurtz Sabrina Lackey Melanie Lane Doris Lanier Donna Larson Lanny LaVoie Roger Lawton Tina Lee Averill Legrec Beverly Legree Karen Legrcc Chris Lewis 174 Seniors. Many extra hours are spent at school board meeting and parent-teacher con- ferences. This year, we added two new school board members—Mr. Tom Davis and Mr. Otis Roberts. These men have picked up the pace and proven they are truly concerned with the school system. Other important jobs are those of the disciplinarians like Mr. Presley and Mr. Romine. Mr. Jack Rankin and Mr. McKinley Jeffers are the Principal’s “right hand men” as the assistants. Mr. David Ellis is Com- pleting his tenth year as Columbia High School’s principal. All of these men deserve our thanks for their un- derstanding and willingness to work. Because of the new Student Assessment Test, there has been more emphasis on the basics. However, this does not rule out study- ing drama, writing prose and poetry, or learning the do’s and don’ts of writing a term paper. Every student at CHS is given the opportunity of broadening his English skills by studying these and more. The advanced classes have proven to be beneficial to those college bound students. Math is actually an essential part of our lives. If we know math, we can balance our checkbooks, figure our in- come tax, and figure out the interest on the brand new car. When we are in class, we may gripe and grumble be- cause the teachers give so much home- work, but in the end, we will appreci- ate our slavedriving teachers. Students may attend school half-days and work the other half. This program appeals to those students who are not planning to enter college im- mediately after graduation, but would like to enter the business world. The Bible History class is an exciting one for those interested in the customs dur- ing Jesus’ times. As one studies man’s rights and wrongs, he can decide what to do to eliminate our problems. Therefore, there is a brighter future ahead for all of us. Department heads are south campus, Mr. Couie and north campus, Dr. Frank Phillips. The teachers have sacrificed much of their time and energy and have risked their lives to teach us the safest driving techniques. Sometimes, people neglect their physi- cal activities in their efforts to improve their mental capabilities. Ask any P.E. teacher and they will tell you that physical exertion is as good for you mentally as it is for you physically. If you ask joggers why they jog, they will probably say that it’s good for them physically and also mentally. It feels so good to know that you ran those two miles faster than before, or that you have improved your number of pull- ups by three. Our P.E. classes offer a wide variety of sports that appeal to everyone. Vocational Classes Provide Lots Of Grease And Grime Vocational classes offer a wide variety of information to prepare students not only to know these skills, but also they are prepared to go out into the world and make their living.
