Modeling sports clothes, dem- onstrating individual talents and many personalities, these girls worked long and hard for this spe- cial night. But problems arose as sink-holes were discovered and many complications developed. Again there was dismay and wondering if the school could be constructed at its present site. These worries were erased forever though, as the new Columbia Senior High School opened its doors to the students September 8, 1975. 166 At first the new design seemed like a maze to the students, but after a few days most of the students had everything figured out. Unlike being at the old CHS, only Juniors and Seniors were attending the new school. At first there were problems between the classes, as to who would receive what privileges. However, like most of the other predicaments of the school, these problems were also solved. Our four million dollar school was built on eighty-eight acres. This all electric building has the electric capacity of about sixty homes. In order to cool such a spacious building, twenty-six air conditioners were installed in the roof by helicopters. Thats what happened at the an- nual Junior-Senior Powderpuff foot- ball game, which was held De- cember 13, 1975 at Memorial Stadium. As Seniors beat the clock, the clock's rhythm seemed to change as it self-destructed a minute before the final play. This made it a minute overtime and a victorious win for the Junior class. The game's proceeds went to a Christmas Party for the under- privileged children. 7. What's going on, referees seem to be lost. 2. Senior cheerleaders climb their way to the top. 3. Co-ordinating homecoming activities took much time and effort, and proved to be a success. Student Council officers obtain awareness on how our city is run on Student Government Day. For the first time, Student Council created a way of keeping track of student and faculty cars — parking stickers. Band 205 Strike up the band! Philadelphia was where the action took place. Band members and supporters worked hard all summer with carnivals, car washes, candy sales, and many other money making activities, but it was worth it. Florida and Columbia County had something to be proud of when the Marching Band of Lake City paraded in the Cimbles Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. The band kept the spirit going in pep rallies and foot- ball games. This is not where the ac- tion stopped, the band participated in contests at Florida Field and re- ceived superior rating in the 4A class. Being invited to several con- certs for marching and symphonic has kept everyone in the band busy. Mr. Ffentzelman, Columbia Senior High School's new band director has succeeded in making the band march and play in an accomplished manner. 206 Band 7. Individual progress is emphasized combined with classroom lecture and discussion. The various math programs are taught by Mr. Flanagan, Mr. Mobley, Mrs. Casey, and Mr. Johnson. Math 217 1 History this school term, was high- lighted around the Bicentennial Cel- ebration. Bicentennial reports and projects were a part of the course to help benefit the students on the background of their history. They studied about the Presidents, Wars, famous inventors, historical re- mains, and the way it was 200 years ago. The course varies from U.S. History, Americanism vs Communism, Economics, Psychology, and Sociol- ogy. New courses were offered this time for students interested in Bible Study, and Contemporary American Government Affairs. These courses are directed under; Mr. Bouie — Head Chairman, Mr. Marsland, Mrs. Snipes, Mrs. Carnathan, Mr. Montgomery, Coach Colvin, and Mr. Feldman. 7. The fact that there is no paved Driv- ing Range added to the challenge Mr. Harold Morgan has to face. Re- sourcefulness and ingenuity pro- vided a home made range featur- ing almost all the advantages of the more costly set up at other schools. Mr. Morgan's 78 students spend thirty hours in class plus six hours behind the wheel in actual driving situations. The Driver's Education Department has three cars for the students' use. Two were courtesy of Ronsonet Buick and the third is provided by the school. Each car is equipped with a horn, cut off switch, brake and mirrors that the teacher may use when the car is in motion and driven by a student. Mr. Morgan checks out a blind spot in class. Physical Education Takes On New Challenges There are always some problems in a big move. It seems in CSHS's move the P.E. Department was hit the hardest. Lack of a football field, a track for running, tennis courts and baseball fields headed the list of needs that are slowly being filled. However, a combination of leader- ship from the P.E. Faculty and the determination of the students, young athletes managed to pull through, stay in shape, and have a fun year in Physical Education. Over 350 students enrolled in the P.E. program can choose to partici- pate in any course from flag football to self defense. Tennis, Bowling, Ar- chery, Basketball, Volleyball, Golf, and Gymnastics head the list of new beginnings in Physical Education. 220 Driver's Ed. Practical life experiences must be dealt with using skills fostered in business classes. Learning the law, consumer awareness, business machines, accounting techniques, are just a few of the arts practiced by students. Typing and shorthand consume many students' time as they learn how to run offices, communication skills, and become proficient contributors to the business world. Among the courses available are shorthand, typing, bookkeeping recordkeeping, business law, and business math. Large, spacious rooms equipped with the latest in electrical equipment characterize business classes. i Business Department Teaches the Business of Business 5 7. This course, offered to students not interested in college, at the present is directed by Mr. Long, Mr. Lawton and Mr. Al- bury. Training students for their part-time jobs and acquainting them with their occupational preferences has been the main objective of DE. The DE students receive three full credits along side of a regular paycheck. Many winners in district and state competition have come from the '75-76 DE class. 6. Mr. Lawton, 7. Mr. Long, 8. Mr. Albury Gourmet Lunches Garnish New Cafeteria! An obvious improvement in school lunches has led to increased student participation. Lunchroom staffers spend five to six hours daily prepar- ing over 600 lunches for a hungry student body and staff. A special and popular addition to the menu has been milkshakes. Well balanced hot meals are a permanent feature served in conjunction with hamburgers and french fries. Dedicated to gearing the program to the needs of all students, the English Department provides the opportun- ity for students to choose a variety of classes. Emphasis is placed upon Writing and Reading Skills. Mini-course classes provide for basic needs and also provide more specialized classes in Literature. Courses ranging from Basic Gram- mar, to Research papers, to Women in Literature helped provide the in- centive for 150 more Seniors to re- gister for English than last year. As a result, an additional teacher was hired. The English Courses are taught under; Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Foreman, Mr. Scott, Mrs. Gause, Mrs. Gillman, and Miss Bookman. 1. Putting this annual together was no easy task; we always thought people just slapped a few pictures here and made a headline to go there. Come to find out it was working until dawn, making mis- takes, and correcting them by the bushel that made this yearbook what it is. This year has been truly an ex- perience for everyone. Adjusting to new rules and making new rules has brought about a beginning that will never end at CSHS. Trying to give this yearbook a new and more creative look we feel these people have contributed much of their time and effort: Mrs. Nettie Ozaki, who lent us her ideas for the introduction; Mrs. Roberta Wilson, who beautifully portrayed the old style of script, also contained in the introduction; Mr. Harold Day our school photographer; Mrs. Colvin Carter and the annual staff without whom we couldn't have produced this yearbook, and to Miss Martha Jo Deas for her lasting confidence in us. Sincerely, P.S. We can't forget our teachers who willingly let us out of class, frequently to work on the yearbook, last but not least our parents who stood by us and lent us their shoulder to lean on Thank-ya . . . thank-ya . . . thank-ya. 290 Editors Note WHO DONE IT! A new beginning . . . Is spring in the forest eternal. Where leaves of autumn past are In the winds of change scattered, While buds awaken to the fresh air of morning. Scented with hope. And dreamflowers sprinkle the boughs, Like stars on a clear night Mirrored in the placid waters of an alpine lake, In the embrace of mountains all. A joyful enchantment clings to the trees, Sharpening the colors as the myriad noises Of life renewed graces the crystal air. Let us enjoy the forest While spring lies on the land and The sun is smiling. Let us dream of tomorrow. While the dreaming is good and The flowers are blooming. Let us rest from our labors, While the air is cooly sweet and The rain is far away. So we can always remember with joy. The beauty of this moment.
