CHIMPS Columbia High School’s “Fighting Tigers roared and.clawed through their 1951 season undefeated It was the first undefeated Tiger team since 1932 and the first conference champions in seventeen years. The Tigers were then under the tutorship of Hobart Hooiser, now assistant coach at the Uni- versity of Fla. In the '50 season the Tigers were knocked out of the number one spot by arch rival Live Oak With this thought in mind the wearers of the purple and gold went into the season with thoughts of revenge. When they reached the last game of the season with Live Oak they were backed up by nine straight victories. After the smoke of battle had cleared the Tigers had won their Homecoming tilt by a score of 33 to 0 and Columbia High School was the new NORTHEASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION. The Tigers lose the services of their co-captains. Gene Cox to the University of Ga and Lamar Ellis to the University of Fla. The Universities of Stetson. Fla State. Vanderbilt, and Ga Tech are still bid- ding for the services of other outstanding senior Tigers Ralph Tyre, James Boyette, Stanley Anders, and Weston Colemon all have a bright future in store for them m college football So let's go Tigers' FERNANDINA—6 toO Our First One MAIN LAND—31 to 6 Almost a Swim Meet OCALA—13 to 7 They Were Rough PERRY—13 to 7 MACLENNY—20-0 Easy But They Scared Us ST. Donald Higgs, Hmman Rizer, Emory Phillips, Mgr. The Columbia High School nine has some great material in the form of pitchers, Harold Taylor and Bobby Carter. Both of these boys have seen service for three years and this should be their year. When you throw‘in heavy-hitting first baseman John Woods you’ll have a combination that is hard to beat. When you add the two Higgs boys, Donald and Robert, to the infield a ball is going to have a hard time getting away. Even if it does, though. Senior Stanley Anders will be on top of it before it has bounced twice in the outfield. When you put all these boys together the rest of the schools in the conference are going to find it rough going when they cross bats with the Fighting Tiger nine. The Fighting Tiger” Track Team got off to a flying start when they made a very impressive showing at the annual Florida Relays. The next to feel the cinders flying from the fleet heels of the Tigers were the schools attending the P. K Younge Relays The Sprint Medley Relay Team of Gene Cox. Lynwood Burns, Cookie Johnson, and Lamar Ellis set a new Relays record in the event for the top performance of the day. Cox and Ellis have turned in favorable times in the Century event with 10.5 and 10.3 respectively. Lynwood Burns has stopped the clock at 23.9 in the 220. Festivities started early in the week with banquets, dances, and pep rallies. Before the game, the two bands played while the queen and her attendants rode out onto the field. The queen carried the ball onto the field, and the game began. Lake City led at the half. The bands put on a thrilling performance. At the end of the game, the score stood at 33 to 0. The crowd went wild! Live Oak presented Lake City with the Old Oaken Bucket trophy. Then, with visions of the N.E.C. trophy in their heads, people went to the big dance which climaxed homecom- ing week. Prize Winning Window Decoration The presenting of the Old Oaken Bucket, with the two Student Council presidents, Cookie John- son of Lake City, and Billy Gunter of Live Oak, representing their schools. 1 J 1 1934 N E C. Champions nir THE BANQUET The Juniors give a banquet and dance in honor of the Seniors every year. This year, the theme was the Circus. At the banquet, delicious food called by such names as Petite Balloon Garnish',’’ was served by boys in clown costumes, and girls in vari-colored tight rope costumes. Rolling down the center of the table, were cardboard trains, stuffed clowns and bright streamers. The circus spirit was even more evident at the dance. A barker greeted the couples at the door with tickets. Next to him, in the foyer was orange juice, peanuts and cookies Hundreds of streamers met in the middle of the ceiling and gave the illusion of a brightly colored tent. Bob Bauer’s orchestra played for the dancers. The Juniors began the floor show with a trapeze act. Tight rope walkers, Donald Dick imitations, songs plus a show put on by the orchestra filled an hour with entertainment. At the close of the show, balloons floated to the floor. At 12:30, the dance was over. Seniors will remember with pride that the night was in their honor. Juniors will happily remember a dance and banquet well worth their time and efforts.
