Freshman year, the class entertain- l at a picnic at Sacajawea Park. elected into the Honor Society. They Lola Ferrians, and Bernice Jones. ound fifteen members of this class entering Columbia Hi as Sophomores. This Year's Officers were: Pres., Harvey Matticeg Vice-pres., Wallace Campbellg Sec,-Treas., Lola Ferrians and advisor, Miss Chase Cfirst semesterl and Miss Glovania Csecond semesterl. Activities began to be more numerous during this year. Three members of the class, namely, Richard U., Lola F., and Wally C., were in the Junior play, Mumba Jumbo, and more dramatic ability was unearthed when Bernice Jones and Wally Campbell were chosen as members of the cast of the Senior Play in the spring of that year. Scholastically, the class was gaining a better foothold, especially among the male members of the group.i ,The 'three girls CBernice, Lola, and Dorothyl who had earned their one- bar pin their Freshman year, were, awarded two-bar pins, and Wallace C. joined their ranks with a one-bar pin. a Tradition was broken by the class due to the fact that it was the first time in the history of Columbia High that a lower class man had held the office of President of the Stu- dent Body. The person elected to such an honor was none other than chichard Uhling. yAnd so ended another year for the Class of '44. C Each year found the group dwindling in number. When school convened in the fall of 1942, only lO members return- ed to bask in the glory attained so early in the history of this class. However, the loss of members did not quell the ardor and enthusiasm of the remaining Juniors. In order to carry on further outstan following officers: Pre ard Uhling, and Sect.-tr Miss Clara Atkins. Unde cers, the class presente elected the -pres., Rich- and advisor, above offie ding activities, they s., Bernice Jones! Vice eas., Florence Goldadeg r the leadership of the d the hilarious and successful play, No Foolinlg produced three first-string lettermen CHarvey Mattice, Richard Uhling, and Wally Campbelllimdfsix members in the cast of the Senior Play Good Night Ladies, and had 3 members in the Honor Society, Lola Ferrians had enough cred- its to become a Senior and graduated with the Class of l943. One outstanding bit of dramatic ability was portrayed by Dorothy Leitzman and Florence Goldade, in the memorable scene in the play given by the Shorthand Class in which the two girls, departed, at identically the same moment from A 1 aiu NSS Sd Ui US UCD ERT! opposite sides of the stage, with arms flung wide in a dra- matic gesture, paced very deliberately toward each other and gallantly, shouted to the rafters--91 am the curtain. anis will long remain a vivid picture in the minds of those who viewed this stupendous scene. To again revert to the serious side of this Q ,history, Wallace Campbell held the office of President of the Student Body unti.he left school early in the spring of l945. At that time Harvey Mattice, who had been the Student Body Vice Pres., stepped into the chair vacated by Wally. Toward the Gloss of the Junior year, our class was invited to go on the Senior week-end with the Seniors much to the Jdniors' sur- prise. We partially repaid the Seniors with a banquet at the Grand Hotel in Walla Walla honoring the outgoing class. This year's activities were culminated on Commencement even- ing, at which time we the Juniors were excited as the Gerald Ladley plaque for all-around sportsmanship and athletic abil- ity was presented to Richard Uhling. Time Marches on and we arrive at the last and final year for the Class of '44. It has been a short year, crammed with activities, honors, and, incidentally, much hard work on the part of each class member in order to complete his and her necessary requirements in ee years. The class enrbllr ment is only five now, but five who have been together throuf ghout our entire high school career. We feel that we have been an outstanding class, but we, also, know that the vac- ancies we leave will be filled by you who remain at Columbia and ---- adequately and competently filled. That is the thou- ght that makes us a little sad for we know that as time goes on, and as each new class enters Columbia, the memory of the present Seniors' achievements will become a little more blur- red each year, but we hope you will remember us. The officers which led the class this year are: Pres., Richard Uhlingg vice.-Pres., Bernice Jones, Sec.fTreas., Flo- rence Goldade and Advisor, Mrs. Davidson. Among other offie es held by members of this group are: Student Body ?res.,--- Harvey Matticeg Girls' Federation Pres., Dorothy Lcitzmang Treas. of the Student Body, Florence Goldadeg ?res. of the Lettermen's Club, Richard Uniingg'ene the Editor of the Col- umbia Breezes, Bernice Joncs.l Both boys in the class were first-string players in both football and basketballg four members of the class took part in the Junior Play Jumpin' Jewelsg two of the girls will recieve their torch pins as fourth-year members of the Honor Society, Dorothy Leittman received her 8-year pin for 4-H dwork at the 4-H Achievement Dinner last weekg and Harvey and Richard both passed the V12 Army Training Exam. This is the first year that the Seventh and Eighth grades have been included in the organization. This is due to the fact that they are housed in the high school building. Consequently, the girls have been invited to join the Federation and to participate in the activities. A mem- bership fee is required, therefore we need no further finan- cial support for the various activities we carry-on. The Girls' Federation have sponsered social functions in the community this year. The second annual Formal Instal lation was held October 20th, in the High School Auditorium, and honored the mothers of the girls. A program of musical numbers were interspersed throughout the afternoon. This function was widely attended and helped to promote friend- ship between the parents and teaehers. ' The girls hiked to Beaver Dam on the afternoon of April 13, to participate in a weiner roast. Each girl brought her share of the food,wh1ch proved to be an over-abundance. Mrs. Donning and Mrs. Hurley were our guests. Although a cold wind blew off the Columbia River, a large bonfire, healthy appetites, and our hike, kept us from feeling .the gbiting wind and occasional showers between the spurts of sun. Financially, the Federation has had a successful year. We purchased fifty song books for the Student Body and the megaphone emblems for the Pep Squad. At the be- ginning of the year there were L4 pupils enrol ed. The Eigth Grade initiated the Seventh Grade at the be- ginning of the first term. Our entertainments consisted of the Eighth Grade giving the Seventh Grade a Valentines'Party and the Seventh Grade entertaining the Eighth Grade with an Easter Party. at which everyone had an enjoyable time. 'Those elected to the Pep Squad were: Wilma Elshire, Pat Ross, and Barbara Willard. Minnie McCarty replaced Pat Ross later in the year. These girls have worked diligently learn ing to lead yells and have had good support from their class mates. They are members of the High School Pep Squad. In Basket ball this year, high point nan was Bud Banta with Orville Curby coming in second. we were invited to the Blue Mountain Tournament where we lost to St. Patricks. Our boys have earned letters and are quite proud of their record in competitive sports. . The Seventh and Eighth Grades have enjoyed their year in the high school building. We appreciate the invitations to participate in Student Body and Girls' Federation Activ- ities. Although we have our own organized group, it has been helpful and beneficial to us to be a part of a 'larger student organization. p T , .... -ab 1-qu i ,..,,...l..,--.r..-......r....lll..l.-...: srA:f:-::e:e9,,L,,.,Y , .rl l...--S, --.----.-... The girls have done nice work in cooking. We also have a club song composed by Velma Derting and was sung at the annual A-H Club Banquet at College Place The girls prepared a dinner with Mrs. Davis as our guest. p We made some cookie-jars and other useful things for our mother's cupboards. The group is doing excellent work this year under their leader. We hope that our grand club spirit keeps up next year as it has during this year. F 1 1 ' f -b. '11, -..bmi , , - .-- -.- ,, , .
