4 l -- - v -J V! 1 QF I m' fHxfUE7d Columbian g Mignonette, speak to mel I . Daring Dick, the fearless lion-tamer, was only an anxious man, a lover like any other man. Dave leaned nearer. 'fCarry her inside, Dick, he said.. I'll call a doctor. He started away almost running but was arrested-by Vic accompanied by a tall, man. uWaitl,' said Vic. I nabbed this guy in the stationg he clalmsl t-o be a doctor. I Dave glanced once at the tall man. A cold chill ran like electricity through his entire body, his face was white. Manners! said the man. '4David Manners! I M Dave looked puzzled. 'Tm sorry--you must be mistaken, he said courteously. Youill find your patient in the third car down. . - Thoughts of Mignonette, the bare-back rider, with a sprained and swollen ankle, were enough lo cast a gloom over the circus troupe. In fact Mlgnonette was a big part of the show, the star 11. the rinv. What am I going to do? asked Andrews, the manager. He walked up and down muttering, frowning. L'Think what Iam going to do. Are you thinking, Crazy?', HI don't know. Can't the other two girls putvit overfw - ' Nog they're not light enough to ride Gypsy. Dave and Vic listened silently, wondering what would happen next. Holy smokeli' shouted Crazy. I have it! I Andrews ceased walking up and down. 'gWell, out with it!', His impatience was evident. Why not put Vic in the ring? He's no heavier than Mignonette, and he knows her actg I can vouch for that. I'm his teacher and he's been a crackerjack pupil. With her costume and a wig you couldn't tell ,em apart. Andrews was looking strangely at Vic. He lit a cigar and chewed it nervously. Could he do it, Dave? 'aWill you do it, Vic?', Dave asked the lad. A skirt and a wig, he said. aNot a wig, Daveli' You've got to look like Mignonette. Yes, both. Will you do it? Do you think you can?,' I know I can, but a wig-aw-Dave! Andrews smiled, patted Vic's shoulder. Lucky Dave found you. Have Marietta make him up, Dave, and get Mignonetteis costumef' The tall doctor was shown into the tent. He glanced at Daveg then reported his case. Her ankle's in pretty had shape and she's upset from the blow on the head. I advise a rest. The doctor moved nearer Dave. Crazy and Andrews were discussing the accident. '5Perhaps the doctor said in a low tone to Dave-Hyou would recognize me if you knew that the Duke of Mannercourt is dead, and his heir, the eldest son, is being searched for with a thoroughness that insures his being found sooner or later. Dave got suddenly to his feet. Vic saw that his hands trembled but he spoke calmly. I donit understand you, sirg but you might explainf' He turned back to Vic. Run along and find Marietta. Tell her to get you ready. Vic got out of the tent as quickly as he could. His heart was pounding madly. He had heard the doctor's wordsg he knew Dave's secret. He had glimpsed life in the Big Tent, sorrow, laughter, adventure-love. And this meant the end of everything. Dave, the son of a duke, would go hack to the old life that called now and the Big Show would be empty without him. There would be nothing left but to take to the road again, but Dave would always be the finest memory in mis ieart. . It was almost time for Mignonetteis act. Dave had discarded his make-up, knowing that his stuntcaffaslstlill prgvnfgla fffplopv, and was standing at the entrance to the great tent. e , ow o ooc. Dave could say nothing. 'LThere now, Buddy, you're not scared, and you've got to wear the wigf, Daye took it and gently slipped it ohyer the short, soft golden ringlets. f Vcilc-wlgf-Jie-you re beautifull' Daves hands held the slender shoulders with a grip o won er an a miration. There had never been such grace of movement, such light turns and swings. Vic was putting over Mignonette's actg the applause attested that. But why was Vic crying? He took a newspaper clipping from his wallet and looked at it for perhaps the thousandth time. It had always looked like Vic. That was why he had saved it. Now the wig had perfected the likeness. He had suspected this for some time but even now the realization that the gray-eyed child named Vic was a girl shocked his senses. Had he not scolded, lectured, threatened to. thrash her more than once? Missing girl still not found ran the story. He knew it without looking at itg the words had been written on his memory for a long time. Vic had cheated him affain. 5 Gypsy swept by him followed by shouts of applause. He only had a glimpse of misty blue ruffles. He found Vic in the manager's deserted tent. The wig lay on the floor and Vic sat very still staring listlessly at the ground. For a moment things were strangely quiet. 4'You saved the show, Vicf' said Dave. Vic looked up with a start. I was afraid at first, after that it didnit matter-nothing mattered. There was a pause. But, Dave, I'm through. I canlt do it again. Dave said nothing until the silence grew painfully long. Besides he was looking with all his eyes. And why? You were a great success. Andrews is pleased and you've made a place for yourselff, he finally managed to say. a'But you see--I'm leaving, Dave. Dave still could think of nothing to say. QI heard what the doctor said to you. You're not a knife-eater. I've known all along that you were different. 'A gentleman shows his breedingi. When you leave I'm taking the road again. Into Vic's hands was thrust the newspaper clipping. There was the picture of a girl with eyes as gray as a seagull's wing, with long golden hair drawn back in soft waves. S'And you are not what you seem-a mere assistant to a knife-eater in a side showin Vic sprang up. She came very close and demanded, '4When did you find this?', Days ago. The day you wouldnit fight and smoked a cigarette. I called you a cheat and a coward. Iim sorry. Well, the game is up. Are you going to tell the others or let me go? Marietta knows, but she's been true-a true friendfi She turned away from his gaze. '4They,re all better and finer than any friends I ever hadg money couldn't buy them. I've found what I always wanted. You've read what the papers said. I did have money, but I was ruled and managed by my father's sister. I couldn't bear it. You see Iim not Hfteeng I'm twenty-two, and I was treated like a childg no choice, no life of my very own. And what is money without life? I wanted to really- live, vs? I ran away and!-and you found mef, Her eyes were sparkling. You've known all this time. I wasn't sure, not until I saw you in that outfit and that wig? He caught her hands. Vic, you have done a great thing for mel I had ceased to believe in anything. And then you came. You were a child to me, and trying to guide you made me see again. I shall always regret that I did not see my father again before his deathg we might have understood' each other better. I ran away from a family match he had planned for me. I couldnit let him run my life to that extent, I had to have my own. UO9H Dave, she whispered, Dave, you will not tell them, you will not spoil it-you will let me There was a loud crash, a fierce, roaring sound, a snarl. Hurryl Get Vic to one of the wagons, Dave, a breathless figure in a clown suit cried. Crazy Capers ran toward them. uDon't you hear, Dave? Dickis lost control of the lions. Old Nap is fighting mad and he's loose? There were screams and cries beyond, pistol shots and the cracking of a whip. Are you coming, Crazy? Dave had snatched Vic up in his arms and was going out of the other entrance. Go ong I'll followf' They found the gilded wagon, the same gilded wagon where Crazy had assured Dave that his act was a uflopf' They waited for some moments in the doorway for Crazy. Frightened people ran here and there, the crowd had gone mad. A revolver hung on the wall beside the door. Dave seized it. '6Leanderl There's Leander! cried Vic. band music.
