4 l -- - v -J V! 1 QF I m' fHxfUE7d Columbian g Mignonette, speak to mel I . Daring Dick, the fearless lion-tamer, was only an anxious man, a lover like any other man. Dave leaned nearer. 'fCarry her inside, Dick, he said.. I'll call a doctor. He started away almost running but was arrested-by Vic accompanied by a tall, man. uWaitl,' said Vic. I nabbed this guy in the stationg he clalmsl t-o be a doctor. I Dave glanced once at the tall man. A cold chill ran like electricity through his entire body, his face was white. Manners! said the man. '4David Manners! I M Dave looked puzzled. 'Tm sorry--you must be mistaken, he said courteously. Youill find your patient in the third car down. . - Thoughts of Mignonette, the bare-back rider, with a sprained and swollen ankle, were enough lo cast a gloom over the circus troupe. In fact Mlgnonette was a big part of the show, the star 11. the rinv. What am I going to do? asked Andrews, the manager. He walked up and down muttering, frowning. L'Think what Iam going to do. Are you thinking, Crazy?', HI don't know. Can't the other two girls putvit overfw - ' Nog they're not light enough to ride Gypsy. Dave and Vic listened silently, wondering what would happen next. Holy smokeli' shouted Crazy. I have it! I Andrews ceased walking up and down. 'gWell, out with it!', His impatience was evident. Why not put Vic in the ring? He's no heavier than Mignonette, and he knows her actg I can vouch for that. I'm his teacher and he's been a crackerjack pupil. With her costume and a wig you couldn't tell ,em apart. Andrews was looking strangely at Vic. He lit a cigar and chewed it nervously. Could he do it, Dave? 'aWill you do it, Vic?', Dave asked the lad. A skirt and a wig, he said. aNot a wig, Daveli' You've got to look like Mignonette. Yes, both. Will you do it? Do you think you can?,' I know I can, but a wig-aw-Dave! Andrews smiled, patted Vic's shoulder. Lucky Dave found you. Have Marietta make him up, Dave, and get Mignonetteis costumef' The tall doctor was shown into the tent. He glanced at Daveg then reported his case. Her ankle's in pretty had shape and she's upset from the blow on the head. I advise a rest. The doctor moved nearer Dave. Crazy and Andrews were discussing the accident. '5Perhaps the doctor said in a low tone to Dave-Hyou would recognize me if you knew that the Duke of Mannercourt is dead, and his heir, the eldest son, is being searched for with a thoroughness that insures his being found sooner or later. Dave got suddenly to his feet. Vic saw that his hands trembled but he spoke calmly. I donit understand you, sirg but you might explainf' He turned back to Vic. Run along and find Marietta. Tell her to get you ready. Vic got out of the tent as quickly as he could. His heart was pounding madly. He had heard the doctor's wordsg he knew Dave's secret. He had glimpsed life in the Big Tent, sorrow, laughter, adventure-love. And this meant the end of everything. Dave, the son of a duke, would go hack to the old life that called now and the Big Show would be empty without him. There would be nothing left but to take to the road again, but Dave would always be the finest memory in mis ieart. . It was almost time for Mignonetteis act. Dave had discarded his make-up, knowing that his stuntcaffaslstlill prgvnfgla fffplopv, and was standing at the entrance to the great tent. e , ow o ooc. Dave could say nothing. 'LThere now, Buddy, you're not scared, and you've got to wear the wigf, Daye took it and gently slipped it ohyer the short, soft golden ringlets. f Vcilc-wlgf-Jie-you re beautifull' Daves hands held the slender shoulders with a grip o won er an a miration.
