He clenched his fist. He wanted to fight, to knock this gink downg but the boy was twice his size. The cigarette was thrust under his nose. 'Take it I Vic took it, knowing not what to do. Leander tugged at his hand. uYou going to smoke it, Vic?,' he whispered. Here's a lightf' the husky intruder said, and to his friends beyondg uWatch him choke. Heis a soft tr ing to be hard! Y Y All of Fhe color had drained from Vic's face, but his eyes were like white-hot steel. Hb puffed the cigarette with an experienced air. The boy before him did not seem so satisfied with himself. 'KVic, we gotta go. There's the lunch gong, said Leander with relief. They started moving along. Vic glanced back. You'd better make yourself scarce around this animal tent, Zolo might not like you, he said. He puffed white smoke into the air and walked on slowly. Suddenly he looked up and straight into blue eyes that pierced straight to his heart. Your mother is waiting for you, Leander. You'll find her just outside. The tall oung man did not take his eyes from the other boy as Leander made his exit. Y 'fVicl'l he said with a deep hurt in his voice. '6You cheat! Vic dropped his cigarette and turned his heel upon it. Nl can explain, Dave, he oflered eagerly. You gave me your promise and you've broken it in two weeks. Youire not a gentleman. A gentleman shows his breeding by keeping his word-being dependable. l'm sorry. Dave kept looking straight at Vic. You've got to listen to me, said Vic. They walked in silence fromthe animal tent to the rear of the Big Top. Then Vic related the incident, the insults, the reason for the cigarette. G5 7 ,U Why didnt you fight? demanded Dave hotly. Any fellow who would take that- an nv as as I couldn't fight himg he was twice my size and-if Vic, youire a coward. Don't ever take anything like that, no matter what happens, whether in or lose you w . :Tm not a cowardf' said Vic softly. uYou expect me to trust you when you break promises like that and take insults for the sake of your size. Vic, l've a mind to-to thrash youli' Dave caught him roughly by the wrist. Vic looked up at himg he was very near. NNO, lim not a coward. Not even you are going to call me one. Go ahead and thrash Perhaps I do need it.'7 He smiled faintly. Dave let him go. You little cussln he muttered hoarsely. glad you said that. lt took courage. The circus travelled through Florida. It arrived one day at a beautiful city of palms and fiowers, everybody anxious to give its performance at its best. They were all getting out in the early morning sunlight to look at the surroundings which were more than welcome after the dead winter fields of other states. ' '4Mignonette!', screamed a terrified voice. HYou've killed yourselff' Vic and Dave turned to see Migonette's slight form lying beneath the steps of the next car and Marietta bending frantically over her. Daring Dick arrived quickly enough to gather her up gently before Dave and Vic could reach them. Mignonette, darling! he said. He raised dark, puzzled eyes to Marietta's face. What happened, Marrietta? , Her heel caught at the top. I think she struck her head on that iron rod. One Hundred Eighty-Four rzzzza:?j!923-QA, ms ww

4 l -- - v -J V! 1 QF I m' fHxfUE7d Columbian g Mignonette, speak to mel I . Daring Dick, the fearless lion-tamer, was only an anxious man, a lover like any other man. Dave leaned nearer. 'fCarry her inside, Dick, he said.. I'll call a doctor. He started away almost running but was arrested-by Vic accompanied by a tall, man. uWaitl,' said Vic. I nabbed this guy in the stationg he clalmsl t-o be a doctor. I Dave glanced once at the tall man. A cold chill ran like electricity through his entire body, his face was white. Manners! said the man. '4David Manners! I M Dave looked puzzled. 'Tm sorry--you must be mistaken, he said courteously. Youill find your patient in the third car down. . - Thoughts of Mignonette, the bare-back rider, with a sprained and swollen ankle, were enough lo cast a gloom over the circus troupe. In fact Mlgnonette was a big part of the show, the star 11. the rinv. What am I going to do? asked Andrews, the manager. He walked up and down muttering, frowning. L'Think what Iam going to do. Are you thinking, Crazy?', HI don't know. Can't the other two girls putvit overfw - ' Nog they're not light enough to ride Gypsy. Dave and Vic listened silently, wondering what would happen next. Holy smokeli' shouted Crazy. I have it! I Andrews ceased walking up and down. 'gWell, out with it!', His impatience was evident. Why not put Vic in the ring? He's no heavier than Mignonette, and he knows her actg I can vouch for that. I'm his teacher and he's been a crackerjack pupil. With her costume and a wig you couldn't tell ,em apart. Andrews was looking strangely at Vic. He lit a cigar and chewed it nervously. Could he do it, Dave? 'aWill you do it, Vic?', Dave asked the lad. A skirt and a wig, he said. aNot a wig, Daveli' You've got to look like Mignonette. Yes, both. Will you do it? Do you think you can?,' I know I can, but a wig-aw-Dave! Andrews smiled, patted Vic's shoulder. Lucky Dave found you. Have Marietta make him up, Dave, and get Mignonetteis costumef' The tall doctor was shown into the tent. He glanced at Daveg then reported his case. Her ankle's in pretty had shape and she's upset from the blow on the head. I advise a rest. The doctor moved nearer Dave. Crazy and Andrews were discussing the accident. '5Perhaps the doctor said in a low tone to Dave-Hyou would recognize me if you knew that the Duke of Mannercourt is dead, and his heir, the eldest son, is being searched for with a thoroughness that insures his being found sooner or later. Dave got suddenly to his feet. Vic saw that his hands trembled but he spoke calmly. I donit understand you, sirg but you might explainf' He turned back to Vic. Run along and find Marietta. Tell her to get you ready. Vic got out of the tent as quickly as he could. His heart was pounding madly. He had heard the doctor's wordsg he knew Dave's secret. He had glimpsed life in the Big Tent, sorrow, laughter, adventure-love. And this meant the end of everything. Dave, the son of a duke, would go hack to the old life that called now and the Big Show would be empty without him. There would be nothing left but to take to the road again, but Dave would always be the finest memory in mis ieart. . It was almost time for Mignonetteis act.
