Queer! ,X The train had suddenly slackened its speed and slowed to a stop. Sidestepping for a through Limitedf, said the trapeze acrobat to Marietta. E Dave stepped down from the last car and walked along side it toward the engine. Then he 2 stopped suddenly for someone had sneezed right beside him. He looked back to see if Leander ,J and Gump were overtaking him, but they were not there. The sneeze was repeated and Dave- 53 looked under the car to see one small boyish hand clinging tight to a rod. yi Wallin he said. He seized the hand firmly. Come on out. You're doubtlessly taking cold, riding in such a manner. . There was a tustle, a struggle for release, but one could not resist the strength of a knife- ? eater. Dave pulled his prisoner out with an oath muttered under his breath. The struggle ended. The boy looked up with eyes as gray as young seagull's wings. He 5. jerked off his cap rather ruefully showing a close-cropped golden head. Say, you win! I give upg I'm caughtf' He buttoned his coat and looked straight up at Dave. What are you going to do now?,' he asked. Dave stood silently regarding his prisoner. He lit another cigarette and casually extinguished r the match. I havenit decided. In the meantime, how old are you, and where did you come from? You might state whose son you are and where you think you're goingf, 1 There was a long silence in which the boy gazed at the ground. Nlim waiting, said Dave. S'I7m Hfteenf, the other returned, Hand-aw-Mister-you might tell a fellow what you're going to do. f' Very well, when you have answered my questions you shall hearf, Dave came a little ig nearer. There was the sound of a train whistle in the distance. HYou'd better hurry, he added. 'ji 4'Well, you can't make me go back. I'm not ever going back to a woman who is supposed ' to be my aunt but acts like a tyrant. He fiung his head up defiantly. 'Tm not anybody's son M and I don't know where I'm going. He ducked his head suddenly with a quiver of the lips. Dave moved toward him and put a brown hand under the lad's chin. On the forcibly upturned cheek Cf-f there was a tear. The boy brushed it away with a dirty hand that left a dark smudge. Gee, V lim sorry, he said bravely, 'Tm not a coward, really I'm not.', 52 'Tm sorry, toof' said Dave. L'So you're not going backfw V Thethrough Limited came snorting and panting down the parallel track. The boy looked up in terror at the monster approaching. Before he could wonder further he found himself stretched flat under the circus train. Q uBe stillli' said Dave. It's all right. The tracks are terribly close. 21 They lay there until the cars had thundered past and the steel rails merely hummed the' l echo of the speeding demon gone on. In the sunlight again Dave lifted the boy to the step of Z, the moving circus train with one arm and swung himself up with the other. They stood and stared at each other. ' Nearly got us that timelv H Dave laughed. 4'Yes, he agreed, 'ibut here we are! U What are you going to do with me? You can't take me along? the boy asked wistfully. fc Why canit I take you if you'll go? I need an assistant in my act, and Iill ask no questions 5 if you'll promise that I wonit be accused of kidnapping a child. Fm not such a childf, the other returned with a fiush. I-Ie smiled for the Hrst timeg his 4 small hand slipped into Dave's- Partners, he said. And my partner's name? sc - 79 F17 Vic, came the answer. 5 I like that. Dave turned toward the car where Leander and Gump must be waiting for him. Come in here, partner, and -get that dirt off your face. Then I'll introduce you to Crazy Capers and the othersf' Two weeks later found the Big Show in a small town that seemed highly excited and en- f thused over the coming of a real circus. Leander and Vic had borrowed some peanuts from V ? one of the loaded baskets that waited in readiness for the afternoon performance. They fed 5' them with greatest joy to Zolo, the prize elephant. They talked and laughed and petted Zolo 52 to the horror of a group of village children who were watching with wonder and fear mingled. A boy of probably sixteen stepped boldly from the group and approached Vic. A limp cig- 54' arette hung between his repulsive lips, his hair fell in disorder from beneath a slouchy cap. , ' t One Hundred Eighty-two f , 2ztzazfg22m5'.Ez'z2zzraqg'.ri1i'?.i2miftzz17jtI-1923-i1iix'?SiE.iE5.ii5f5i5iti1iisf:cxixiEstitrtsKi5m5. fic? He clenched his fist. He wanted to fight, to knock this gink downg but the boy was twice his size. The cigarette was thrust under his nose. 'Take it I Vic took it, knowing not what to do. Y Y All of Fhe color had drained from Vic's face, but his eyes were like white-hot steel. Hb puffed the cigarette with an experienced air. The boy before him did not seem so satisfied with himself. 'KVic, we gotta go. There's the lunch gong, said Leander with relief. They started moving along. Vic glanced back. You'd better make yourself scarce around this animal tent, Zolo might not like you, he said. He puffed white smoke into the air and walked on slowly. Suddenly he looked up and straight into blue eyes that pierced straight to his heart. Your mother is waiting for you, Leander. You'll find her just outside. The tall oung man did not take his eyes from the other boy as Leander made his exit. Y 'fVicl'l he said with a deep hurt in his voice. '6You cheat! Vic dropped his cigarette and turned his heel upon it. Nl can explain, Dave, he oflered eagerly. You gave me your promise and you've broken it in two weeks. Youire not a gentleman. A gentleman shows his breeding by keeping his word-being dependable. l'm sorry. Dave kept looking straight at Vic. You've got to listen to me, said Vic. They walked in silence fromthe animal tent to the rear of the Big Top. Then Vic related the incident, the insults, the reason for the cigarette. G5 7 ,U Why didnt you fight? demanded Dave hotly. The circus travelled through Florida. It arrived one day at a beautiful city of palms and fiowers, everybody anxious to give its performance at its best. They were all getting out in the early morning sunlight to look at the surroundings which were more than welcome after the dead winter fields of other states. ' '4Mignonette!', screamed a terrified voice. HYou've killed yourselff' Vic and Dave turned to see Migonette's slight form lying beneath the steps of the next car and Marietta bending frantically over her. Daring Dick arrived quickly enough to gather her up gently before Dave and Vic could reach them. Mignonette, darling! he said. He raised dark, puzzled eyes to Marietta's face. What happened, Marrietta? , Her heel caught at the top. I think she struck her head on that iron rod. One Hundred Eighty-Four rzzzza:?j!923-QA, ms ww
