- 1. Vi 4 cy V l2i,c'Zzz22zzZz2::t'zz:zLf',zrzzzzz.mf1rf?ZDCcilunlbfdnQ ' is I-H fp f l C THE BIG SHO BY Louisa ALEXANDRA McCono '4Say, Knife-Eater, when it comes to puttin' over an act-if you take it from me-you're a 57 flop. - Crazy Capers, the clown, drew his knees up to his chin and leaned back on the gilded door of the circus wagon, The late afternoon sunlight shone over his chalk-white make-up and thc absurd red mouth that extended smilingly from ear to ear. 5'Grease paint don't make a knife-eater out of you. You can't even look tough with those eyes of yours-and-and say- The knife-eater had not raised his face from the towel in his hands. He seemed to be dili- gently rubbing the soap bubbles from his ears. He was very tall and his hair shone smooth and black. 4 I say, Bo, if you craves actin' you oughta be where folks kin see your real face. You could do it. With that Crazy Capers found the wet towel flung suddenly in his face. I-Ie laughed loudly. 'SKnife-Eater, it's true! You don't belong in the Big Showg you ain't our kind, you're a flop in our line. The knife-eater sat down on the next step of the wagon and'looked off at the great white top of the big tent. A Hop! You're decidedly right, Crazy. I'm a failure! I don't fit. His voice was low, discouraged. Crazy Capers studied his fine, almost classic profile, observed his slender masculine hands, one of which bore a large gold ring with a black insignia upon it. I've been Wondering why-you-U I've wanted life. And life is hereg Iive found it. Life is the Big Show, Crazy. There was the roar of the lions above the usual noise of the excited throngs in the tentg there were various squeaks and squeals from the animal tent beyond. The monotonous voice of the popcorn man continued mechanicallyg the band played an Oriental tune, and back of the tent in the twilight of an autumn night sat a clown and a knife-eater who did not laugh with the crowd. Don't forget, Daveli' said Crazy Capers quietly. 4'I'm askin' no questions as to why you are pullin' a knife-eatin' stunt in the Big Show-but I like you and Ilm your friend. He held out his hand proudly. Dave clasped it warmly. Wfhanks, old fellow, thanks awfullyli' he 1'esponded. A hint of emotion had crept into his voice to linger hauntingly in the memory of the other. It was Sunday morning on the circus train. Sunday morning, to some of the occupants, may have been just like Monday morning, but, to most of them it was a day of rest, a day in which they travelled, slept and finally landed on a comfortable sidetrack. Dave was sitting beside Crazy Capers staring idly at the drab landscape. He looked down the long car. Marietta, the rope walker, who was married to a trapeze acrobat, was teasing her husbnd. The Strong Man and the Bird Woman of the beautiful voice seemed deeply engrossed in conversation, while Daring Dick, the lion-tamer, dozed peacefully. Mignonette, 'the bare-back rider, contemplated herself thoughtfully in a long amber mirror while Leander, the 'cWonder-Child Contortionistn, ran races up and down the aisle with his terrier pup. He flung a bright jest at Dave as he raced by. 5'Say, Dave, will you play with me and Gump?', he asked with a radiantly beaming face. Everybody else is busy and me and Gump have gotta have some exercise. Come here! said Crazy Capers. One would never have known Crazy to be this man of perhaps fifty with a stock of silver hair and dark piercing eyes. He lifted Leander to the seat between them. I'his is Sunday mornin' and-'I Oh, we're gonna have another story, Crazy? asked the little boy eagerly. Please, one about The Boy and the old guys and-5' His thoughts outstretched his words. Dave,ll tell one, toog won't you, Davefw 'Tm going out to get some air. When I come back we'll give Gump that needed exercise. He lit a cigarette as he went out and left Leander staring with a puzzled frown at Crazy Capers. Doesn't he know any stories, Crazy? demanded Leander. - Crazy looked out of the window at a flying field of cotton.
