Making mobiles from coat hangers was justone of the creative projects that Judy Parkhurst, Sharon Gaylord, Joan Schang, Mike Grant, Joy Murbach, Myra Lorber, and Judy King worked on during the year. The boys in agriculture class learned that there's more to farming than milking cows. They also studied how to test soil, make a budget, keep records, etc. They put their knowledge into practice by operating the F.F.A. farm. To many people how anyone can read shorthand is a mystery. That is exactly what this firstyear class thought when they opened their books and saw page after page of scrib- bles. Now they not only read shorthand but write it from dictation and transcribe it. tw' '-:.,:., ill : LJ , ftl: V. - I : Ve Xx, AUTOGRAPHS In--III I R . fn 1 54 Q.-' S I' T' r-T' ix 'l a x 5 1. uw s ,Eff :7x I-Jw? The stage glowing with the color of the girls' formals, the impressive candlelight procession, the thrill received from hearing such numbers as the Hallelujah Chorus, the auditorium packed to the rafters: these are some of the things we will remember when we think of the choir. This year Mrs. Munns selected 68 voices to present the Christmas Concert, the spring Concert and Bacca- laureate. The small ensembles were often called upon to provide music for local organizations through- out rhe community. This year those who desired were fortunate enough to see such celebrated groups as Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, and the Purdue Glee Club. In the spring the senior members went to Chicago to see a musical stage play. Upon completion of the year's performances and activities, honor pins were awarded plus the National Arion Award to the most outstanding choir member. Each Tuesday evening, the sound , of the gavel marks another Forum meet- ing. We all stand for a word of prayer and then proceed into our business Y meeting. Many heated arguments have 1 A escaped through the keyhole and under - the door of Room 14, as our sixty-five b members discuss the pros and cons of various topics. Proficiency in speaking was gained through open discussions, Congresses, debates, and other branches of forensics. This year we attended many invitational contests, and with the coaching of Mr. Fruits, Columbia City attained many honors. To name a few, ,Toe Yoder placed in the finals at the Ball State and Peru contests, Jim Grant was recognized as one of the top ten speakers in the Purdue Assembly, and Linda Gates and Judy Schrader participated in demon- stration debates at Purdue and Ball State. ar? fi? Their selections were both edu- cational and humorous. By selling re- freshments at the football and basket- ball games, they earned enough money to buy the yell leaders new outfits and kept us well-entertained at convocations. They also assisted in numerous other activities. By the end of the schoolyear, Miss Stultz completed twenty-three years of sponsoring the club. With her efforts they succeeded in many worthwhile pro- jects. Flanking Susan Coon, Secretary, are Rosalie Farber and Vicki Leach, co-presidents of this year's Booster Club. With twenty new members, E1 Club Espanol held many gay festivities. At Christmas time the members paraded through the streets, carrying bright lanterns and caroling in Spanish, Then they went to the Teen Canteen where they held a Posada, During their numerous parties, they learned to dance everything from the Mexican Hat Dance to the Cha-Cha. The great increase of membership made the group the largest it has ever been. At their first meeting, they elected all boy officers. E G L E S T A F F Where's the dummy for the feature page? Don't bleed this picture, and never run copy into the gutter. What's this? Just the everyday language of the Eagle and Columbian staffs, two of the busiest or- ganizations in the school. From the firstday of school until March cries of hold it and popping flashbulbs were a sign that Miss Cotterly and her crew were takingpictures ofour smiling faces. The Eagle staff and Mrs. Met- zger worked long, hard hours to put out our weekly paper. Here, Jo Ellen Adams, Editor, Jon Pontzius and Vicki Leach, co-business mana- gers, and Myra Lorber, assistant editor, seem to be well pleased with the last issue of the Eagle, We found ourselves learning as well as having fun as we put the l95'7 COLUMBIAN together. Sticking to the modern ideas of design, we often found it hard to agree with some of the ideas concerning layouts, Striving to improve our book and trying to make it dif- ferent are quite difficult, especially when you are also striving to make the present edition the best yet! We have worked hard, but we have en- joyed it, and now we are a bit reminiscent as we put the final edition on the shelves and start to think about next year's theme, for we have had such fun putting this book, as well as our ideas, together. ,.f B BUSINESS STAFF. To mention a few of their acti- vities, these members busy themselves by operating a twenty-five acre farm in Morches Park, participating in F,F.A, and 4H judging contests, and selling garden seeds. During this first year of organiza- tion, the members of C Club have done much toward furthering the conduct and attitude in our school. This is not primarily a social club but rather a group of boys, who as leaders, set an example for future athletes and students to follow. This year the C Club members have ushered at the home basketball games and managed the school coke machine. Any boy who has earned a letter in any sport is eligible, but he must be voted into the organization by amajority vote. At the close of each seasonal sport, new members are selected. .4-1 Ronnie Yant, with Jerry Parrett running interference, hits the After three weeks of rough practice under the direction of head coach Curtis Kivik, thirty-four varsity players were ready to meet the Nappanee Bulldogs to open our 1956 season. Having been discouraged by the defeat of our first few games, the Eagles fought to re- gain victory. Finally, after losing several games by only a small margin, we ended our season by defeating our old rivals the War- saw Tigers, in a '7-0 shutout. This was our first victory over the Tigers in seven years, The N. E. I. C, All-Conference teams were chosen by the area coaches and princi- pals. Dave Hawn, Eagle guard, was chosen for the second team, and Jay Smith, Eagle tackle, and Dennis Iuillerat, Eagle back, re- ceived honorable mention. The reserves had a fairly good season winning two and losing four games. Their victories were over Howe Military Academy and Huntington. We can't overlook the rough time they gave their opponents. We certainly hope that the experience gained by these boys will aid in the building of an outstanding varsity next year. Coach Kivik was assisted by Keith McDowell and George Kind. K fri? We shall always remember the ir dedi- cation as teachers and the warmth of their personalities as friends. UNDERCLASSMEN SOO HCOLUMBIANSH ALL WITH THE SAME THCUQHT- TO WORK-TO STRIVE-TO SUCCEED This school year was both eventful and colorful at home and abroad, We waited anxiously to learn the results of the vigorous presidential campaign between Eisenhower and Stevenson. The conflict in the Middle East and Hungary's fight for freedom alerted the entire world, and the Civil Rights issue at home was rampant. A jet plane circled the world in forty-five hoursg the New York Yankees had 3 no-hir game in the World Series, rock 'n roll and Calypso stormed the music worldg quiz program contes- tants became celebrities, and the 1930 look appeared in fashions. Our teen-age world revolved around our home, church, and school. But like the rest of the country, we were interested in hi-fi, T,V, spectaculars, best-sellers, polio shots, and the swept-wing look in cars. We talked about the plans for our new schoolg enjoyed class-room discussions and club activitiesg and followed the Hoosier craze for basketball. Yes, we five-hundred Co1umbians had a lot of ftm this year, but beneath the gay exterior of fads and trends, we realized that we all had one common goal for the betterment of ourselves and our changing world -- to work, to strive, to succeed. Here to remind us of the class hours and school activities that made this year eventful for us, is the 1957 Colurnbi2.l'1.
