On page four, students assume new personalities, clad in garments furnished by South American travelers. Throughout the year, special efforts were made to bring in outside entertainers, some of 'ith People and Excitement whom have performed abroad. ln April, students, teachers, and townspeople took part in an Easter Convocation. Wholehearted efforts resulted in a very successful May Day. Page five Ccenterj shows the rear of the crowded auditorium at these convocations. Other pictures on page ive demonstrate daily routine of classes and relaxation individually and by means of clubs. Mr. Arley Kerr Superintendent of Schools This is the story of Columbia City High School from September, 1948, to June, 1949. It is told mainly through pictures, in order to show that students go to school for reasons other than because they must. They are shown sob erly taking part in the more serious phases of their education, but many times they are ca ught in a lighter mood, because in high school the feet and the heart are both very light. Within a stone's throw of this high school are located the birthplace of Lloyd Douglas, author of The Robe, The Big Fisherman, and other books, the home of Thomas R. Marshall, former governor of Indiana and vice-president of the United States, and the residence of Ralph R. Gates, class of 1911, former governor of Indiana. And now, you ask, can we expect greatness in thought and deed of the citizens of to- morrow? The answer is Not yet. This sch 001 has not fulfilled its mission. You will have to go inside the four brick walls. The Annual Board of Columbia City High School now proudly presents its Picture Book. 6 FACULTY The students of this school like the faculty and frequent- ly comment on how well they behave. Class Oflicers Left to right: Harold Rathbun, Charles Holbrook, Barbara Strouse, Center front: Linda Wright. History One fall day in September of '45, more than a hundred very green freshmen wandered into good old C.C.H.S. After several days of go- ing to the wrong classes at the right time, we settled down as progres- sive students. We elected Joe Adkins president. Many students participated in various extra-cur- ricular activities, such as band, choir, Booster Club, Eagle Staff, Forum, and Spanish Club. In our sophomore year we became more ambitious. Lee Bitting presided over our busi- ness and social activities. Miss Carver and Mr. Chapman led us faithfully through another year. Students in speech work and band brought many honors to the class. Lee Bitting won the state FFA Oratorical Contest. We started our money-making projects by sponsoring dances and selling pencils and Eagle pins. After two years of hard work, we finally became upperclassmen. Our class welcomed a new sponsor, Mr. Lazarz. Cliff Blanchard became president. Our main goal this year was to raise money for that long-waited reception which was held at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Fort Wayne. Much too soon our senior year came upon us and slipped away. Charles Holbrook assum- ed office as presidentg Linda Wright, vice-president, Barbara Strouse, secretary, and Harold Riathbun, treasurer. Shirley Foltz reigned over the Hallowe'en festivities with Charles Hol- brook, her escort. The juniors entertained us with a very fine reception. Class night activities were held on May 27. Instead of having the senior supper, we enjoyed an educational trip to Detroit and Canada. Baccalaureate services were the 29th of May. Commencement was June 3. Mr. Harold F. Carr, pastor, Lakewood Methodist Church, Lakewood, Ohio, gave the address. We chose the motto, t'Not finished, just begun,', for we felt that graduation from high school is just the beginning of our future lives. The red rose was favored by our class and our colors were blue and silver. Thanks for the memories, CCHS, and as we bid you a fond farewell, we wish to extend our gratitude to our patient sponsors, parents, and teachers, who have so faithfully stood by us during our four years of high school education. We will continue to strive for higher ideals and special fields of endeavor, so that we may do our part to make this a better world to live in. -Doloros Rondeau 14 Joe Adkins President 1 Track 1 Football 1, 2 BHSAA 1, 2, 3 Dr. Training 3 Halloween Escort 4 Lee Bitting Choir 1, 2, 3, 4, Asst. Miss Rosemary Bergman took the position, along with Mr. Welty, as class sponsor. Class officers were Jack Stalf, Don Lloyd, Helen Fries, and Beverly Pence in the role of president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer, respectively. During the year the class sponsored a dance, variety show and, after much preparation, the Junior and Senior Reception. Seated: Miss Thornburgh, Dick Phend, Mr. Shull. Standing: Betty Shroycr, De- Wayne Anderson, Marceil Mc- Elroy. Freshman History In the year l948, one hundred three confused newcomers invaded the freshman rooms at Columbia City High School. Two more students enrolled during the school year to be called freshies and t'greenies by the upper classm en. This life was a new experience for these freshmen, but they soon became accustomed to it. Miss Blackwood and Mr. Kilby, the class sponsors, led these freshmen through the school year. Dick Rondeau was elected president, Dick Morsches assisted him as vice-president, Martha Luckenbill called the roll, while Rheta Rumsyre accounted for the class debits and credits. Various clubs and activities were joined by the freshmen. Many chose Eagle Staff, De- bate, Booster Club, and SSS to round out their schedules. Others were interested in BHSAA, basketball, football, and GAA. The freshman class sponsored a basketball game between the varsity and the faculty and a dance after the Warsaw basketball game. The first year in high school has been completed by these freshmen. May the future bring many happy memories of school life to these citizens of tomorrow. 24 Top: Helen Fries, Don Lloyd. Sophomore History We have finally passed the greenie stage and are settling down to good hard work as t'Sophisticated Sophomoresf' f All work and no play, makes John and Jane dull people so we have entered many ex- tra-curricular activities. Some of them are GAA, BHSAA, Sunshine Society, Eagle Staff, Forum, NFL, Hi-Y, Annual Board, Booster Club, Spanish Club, FHA, FFA, Band, Choir, and Glee Club. Some of the big husky fellows are in football, basketball and track. A few of our great orators entered the McLallen Contest. To make our pockets jingle we had two dances and sponsored a magazine drive. Class officers are: president, Dick Phendg vice-pres., DeWayne Andersong secretary, Betty Shroyerg treasurer, Marceil McElroy, and sponsors, Miss Thornburgh and Mr. Shull. iiliII'VM s T 6 K' L Seated: Mr. Kilby, Dick Rondeau, Miss Blackwood. The marching band season started August 23rd with daily rehearsals for the week at the State Fair in Indianapolis as the official band. This band was the first high school band chosen to perform at the fair in an official capacity. They occupied the entire Williams mo- tel at Indianapolis for the week. Among the events that the band played for were the horse shows, implement displays, and the horse races. The marching band played for all home games and at Bluffton and Warsaw football games. The marching season ended with the band winning the Indiana sweepstakes trophy for the best all-around marching band of any class. This trophy has been won by the local band for over a decade and the present band was pioud to uphold the line tradition started many years ago. , f' l 9 The band is in its 30th year. The first appearance of the concert band was an evening performance on December 20, and featured numbers of a festive nature. The second concert was held on March 6, for the purpose of performing the contest selections for audience appeal. A pop concert com- posed of Well-known pieces was given later. In the spring, in a special convocation twenty seniors, the largest class ever to graduate from the band, received letters. Twenty-five Winners of the district solos and ensemble contest at Fort Wayne traveled on to Indianapolis to the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music for the first state solo and en- semble contest for a number of years. Columbia City here chalked up a large percentage of high ratings, with Jim Briggs, drums, Jean Lee Mullendore, trumpet, Dick Morsches, twirlingg and the sax quartet composed of Barbara Wilmore, Norma Souder, Gloria Glass, and Marianne Nei. A quick-march, 4'Holyrood was used as the Warm-up march. With all of these contributing factors, the band rendered a great service to the communi- ty and surpassed its former reputation. The Music Makers, the school dance band, which is made upof eight seniors, five juniors, and three sophomores, has improved steadily since its founding in 1947. This improve- ment is due not only to the hard Work of Mr. Welty, the director, but also to the fact that the seniors have acquired experience in playing for dances. The dance band has played for twenty-three school dances and six out-of-town dances, three at New Haven, one at Larwill, one at Nappanee, and a prom at Elmhurst. The money from school dances is used for a trip and money from the out-of-town dances is divided among the players. The dance band is one of the few school dance bands in the state. It adds much to the school activities in which it participates. 51' rem' sf W Danna Ilunfl Top Row, left to right: Don Jones, Jim Briggs. In 1949, as in 1934, many such prob- lems faced the publication of this weekly newspaper. At the beginning of the year five journalists, who had excelled in this field answered roll call. Through the year other members, who had shown interest and ability in the Eagle, were added to the club to bring the membership up to the ten mark. Doyle Johnston presided at the meetings while Pat McKenna acted as secre- tary-treasurer. The year's activities were brought to a close with the annual Press Club and Quill and Scroll banquet held May 11. 50 Quill and Scroll The Quill and Scroll, a national honorary society for outstanding journalists, was founded in 1926 to re- ward individual achieve- ment and to encourage in- dividual initiative in work in high school journalism, creative writing and allied fields. A member of the Quill and Scroll must be of at least junior standing, must be in the upper third of his class, have done superior work in some phase of journalistic or creative en- deavor, be recommended by the advisor and approved by the executive secretary, New members of Quill and Scroll this year were: Rosalind Beeson, Norma Trier, Don Lloyd, Bill Kiss- inger, Dick Gates, Shirley Ferguson, LuAnn Lorber, and Arlene Farris. Senior Play The Senior Class presented Moss Hart and George Kaufmanls 'fYou Can't Take lt With You, on May 18th and 19th, under the direction of Miss Eloise Blackwood. The play takes place in the living room of the Sycamore home. Many strange activities go on in the home such as the manufacture of fireworks, operation of a printing press, bal- let dancing, and Grandpa's interview with the income-tax collector to whom he expresses his dislike of income taxes. At first the Sycamores seem extravagantly mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap delicatessen foods, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores disagree with Alice and Tony will not give her up. In the end Mr. Kirby, at least, is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit from the ex-Grand-Duchess of Russia. The officers were Norma Trier, president, Betty Shroyer, vice-president, and Anne Fisher, secretary-treasurer. Activities commenced with softball in early fall. This was followed by a double round robin volleyball tournament. This tournament was won by Wright's Wonders, runner-up was Shepard's Flock. A basketball round robin tournament followed. GAA was host to Auburn, Kendallville, and Concordia in a volleyball Sportsday. It consisted of a round robin tournament, a supper served by our GAA girls, and a skit given by each school. April 23rd found a group of members at North Manchester College for a Playday. The girls enjoyed themselves immensely. To increase finances the girls sold home-made candy and sponsored a dance. 55 In the top picture, coaches and boys go over their plays at the football Held and incidentally bask in the sunshine. Football Early in August Coach Tofil made the annual call for football candidates. Some 30 boys, varying in size, ability, and strength, responded. Through weeks of work and training the Eagles became an able, challenging ball club. Auburn, always a threat, was the first team to challenge CC. In the close battle, the Red Devils came out on top, 13-6. Royerton was the next opponent on the agenda. Winning 25-0, the Eagles literally mopped the gridiron clean of the new foes. The next week, the Eagles met another new non-conference foe. The new challengers, called Concordia, trampled CC 19-0. ln a heartbreaker, Bluffton eked out a 19-18 victory over the Eagles. In a good, hard-fought game on home soil, the Eagles downed Garrett, 12-6. Playing at Dwenger Park, CC copped another victory, defeating New Haven, 19-6. In the following week, a game between two evenly matched teams, CC and Decatur, resulted in a 6-6 tie. ln the last game of the season, two traditional foes, VVarsaw and Columbia City, clashed. Warsaw proved the stronger, trouncing the Eagles 20-0. The record of the Eagles for the 1948 season was 3 wins, 1 tie, and 4 losses. This was a considerable improvement over last season's record. With many returning lettermen, the school looks toward a more successful season in 1949. 58 , Freshman Football B li i i ! The Freshmen came out strong when the call Was given to prac- tice.
