ALUM) COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE AND SEMINARY 1987 FINIAL VOLUME 48 Post Office Box 3122, Columbia, South Carolina 29230 (803)754-4100 We are the sheep of His pasture . . . The Word of God is rich with pictures which are representative of the relationship we have with our Lord. One example would be the idea of the relation- ship of Christ and the Church being like that of a groom to his bride. Perhaps though, the best picture is that of a shepherd and his sheep representing the loving, constant watchcare of our Lord over us. God, our Shepherd, is a wonderful and perfect guardian El for us, His little ones. He is ever mindful of our needs and is continually seeking our best. He does not lead us where we can stumble and fall but guides us with His tender hand. He guides us to fertile ground off of which we can be nourished. Our Lord guides us to His pasture. We are the sheep of His pasture. R ' • IBB 1 !. — ' „ ««.  • fc A M| mr ' ppj ' -- iflrajflltf . HI T3I f j  ' « I a 4W ' ■My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father ' s hand. JOHN 10:27—29 Where are we going? I asked Him one day. Oh, little sheep, Just follow the way, For I am your Shepherd, And I ' m in control, And what lies ahead Is for the Shepherd to know. (Kristin Hall) DEDICATION In the Old Testament, when God chose a place and designed a building in which He would meet with and train His people, He chose one man filled with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts, to work in wood and to engage in all manner of workmanship. He also gave him the ability to teach others. So also at Columbia Bible College, as God provided the present facility in which He could meet with and train young people for the worldwide task, He called and gifted one man. For over twenty years this man has manifested great skill and ability in maintaining, protecting, and beautifying this ever growing physical plant. The Spirit of God in the man was expressed first in his consistent commitment to Jesus as his Lord. God also worked out in him to put a high priority on his family. In this area there has been a consistent model to the commu- nity and to the church of God ' s plan for family life. Then as to the work God called him to do, there has been the manifestation of great skill and wisdom in caring for the building and grounds in which God was doing His work of training. He also taught others in that he gath- ered around him other skilled spirit-filled craftsmen to cover every phase of maintenance. His leadership of and caring for this group has been consistently an encouragement to his fellow workers and also a great boost to their efficiency. Because of these many years of faithful service to his Lord, to his family and to the Physical Plant at C.B.C., the 1987 Finial is dedicated to Mr. Rigba Wolfe. Board of Trustees Seated: Elizabeth R. By working together and trusting in the Lord, the members of the class are strengthened and challenged in the Christian walk. The key verse for this year is I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Phil. 4:13) The Columbia community is looking forward to seeing the development of all these men and women and there effectual service to come. -rewfei ' 1 r A r J jp H I j J ■v a 1 Dan Anderson Harold Baker Mike Baker Beverly Berry M ftZMHH Prayer Group Leader. Each person brought with him or he r different skills, perceptions, and knowledge that would be refined over the course of the year. Some members were doctors, some teachers, some nurses, and even one that was involved in animal husbandry! Countries that were represented were South Africa, Nigeria, China, Sierra Leone among others. With each bright and beautiful day, some new idea was presented and learned. In the end, each indivi- dual left C.G.S. better equiped to join the missions task force or to serve Christ in the local church. Regardless of the destinations, prayer, daily devotions, regular exercise and general knowledge of the Lord will continue to develop and with this as a basis, the Certificate Class of ' 87 will know Him and make Him known. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:1—2 Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his mouth to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. Or so we think. Present is now and here; We have it full of fear; We take those hateful pains And lock them away in chains, Where they remain forever . . . Or so we plan. Future will come and go; And we can never know What new mistakes we ' ll make; But we ' re sure they ' ll always stay Closely guarded forever . . . Or so we hope. And as we long to be free, Finally He let us see That all along He held the key So unlock your prison door, And look to the One who bore All your guilt and heard your cries, Sees through your fronts and alibis; for past, present, future — they all slip by in haste, And you have absolutely No time at all to waste. As the team is able to show forth their physical abilities, the players also witness to their opponents through their attitude. First Corinthians 10:31 tells us, . . .whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. The basketball team attempts to do just this every time they step on the court. The team is composed of: Jon Cox, Dave Cromeenes, Paul Ditoma, Ken Hanna, Todd Norris, Eric Peters, Jim Suddath, Scott Wolfe, and Coach Julian Riddle. CASUAL H i STUDENT ASSOCIATION SENATE Do not go where the path may lead; go rather where no man has gone and leave a trail. The Student Association Senate seeks as its purpose to enhance the spiritual climate of the undergraduate student body by the means of S.A. chapels, speakers, events, and various scheduled activities such as singouts and seminars. The S.A. Senate sees as a primary function of the organization to communicate the needs, concerns, and problems of the undergraduate student to the administration. We also coordinate, oversee, execute, and evaluate all the undergraduate socials. This year the Senate has blazed a trail in several ways. First, we have gained a vision to rewrite the Student Association constitution in order to give some structure to the organization. Second, we have reinstituted the S.A. Concern drawing up a plan whereby this scholarship program can work effectively for many years in the future. Third, the S.A. Senate has sensed the need for the administration and students to gather and discuss issues which affect greatly our school. Therefore, we have called for a forum where these questions may be raised. And lastly, we have reworked the financial structure for the student organizations. This year the Student Association Senate has clearly blazed a trail where no man has gone before. GRADUATE LIFE COUNCIL The purpose of the Graduate Life Council this year can be summarized with an acrostic using the word LIFE . Living Interaction For Edification is the life of the Graduate Life Council this year. The Council wishes to develop among its students and between the Bible College and the Graduate School unity in this diversity. As this unity is built, we can better learn to serve Christ now and in the future. Mark Burkholder, Communications; Tod Block, Social Chairman; Barb Gotaas, Vice Pres.; Nancy Dyer, Seer.; Richard Fleming Pres.; Lori Baumgartner, Group Sec; Dave Corah, K Group Coordinator; Gregg Johnson, Treas. STUDENT MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP The S.M.F. provides a means whereby all students can be informed about and involved in foreign missions. To this end, the students can discover more about God ' s will regarding the role He has for them in His plan for world evangelization; both home and abroad. The members of the Student Missions Fellowship make students aware of the importance of their relationship with God and how they can know His purposes. Patterns of prayer for missions are developed so that students will become involved personally with specific fields. And lastly, the S.M.F. motivates the school to get involved in outreach and provides practical opportunities to do so. ■MkH 1 : Josue Raimundo; Jeff Ingram, Pres.; John Winton; Roger Reber; Dr. Hoyt, Advisor; Steve Ballenger, Vice Pres.; Julie Sisson, Teri Rich; Gail McKenzie; Debbie McCloy; Wendy Mullinax; Sherilyn Schlabach; Deanna Kerns SENIOR CLASS CABINET Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name ' s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou annointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. JUNIOR CLASS CABINET Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another. The Junior Class Cabinet had as its purpose to build and edify each class member. Through social events geared for their single, married, on-campus, off-campus, and international students. SOPHOMORE CLASS CABINET Developing a personal walk with God was a major concern in the minds of the Sophomore Class Cabinet. This class sought to become aware of world needs, but the class leadership also had social goals as well. They attempted to create a situation where the class could get to know one another outside of the classroom setting and to get the off-campus students involved. FRESHMAN CLASS CABINET The Freshman Class Cabinet desired to promote fellowship and spiritual growth among the students of the class and to direct class activities. The goals of the organization were to enhance the spiritual gifts in all fresh- men individuals through encouragement, opportunity and fun. They desired to establish a Christian worldview among the students and to obtain a heart for all the lost people of the world. WOMEN ' S DORM COUNCIL The Women ' s Dorm Council promotes student responsibility in the control and regulation of dormitory life and the encouragement of Christian fellowship. The officers serve as a liaison between the dormitory women and the Dean of Women ' s Office MEN ' S DORM COUNCIL The responsibilities of the Men ' s Dorm Council are to promote the fellowship among the on-campus men, control and regulate dorm life, and implement activites for the men. The goals of the group are to develop a closeness among the brethren with the theme of transparency, promote an encouraging atmosphere on-campus, and develop men who are loyal to Christ. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The International Student Association is a vital part of the services open to the foreign students of our campus. The International Student Association serves by providing care for the spiritual and physical well- being of the International Students; by promoting Christian fellowship through prayer, sharing, discussing future plans, and social activities; and by welcoming and helping orient new international students to the life they will be leading in the United States. The goals of this important facet of student service this year included having better organized prayer meetings, organizing the Association to better serve both CBC and CGS,and promoting more social events per quarter for the students. WIND ENSEMBLE The music of C.B.C. is not only blessed with those talented in voice but also with those talented with instru- ments. The Wind Ensemble is an integal part of the music program at C.B.C. It offers to students the opportuni- ty to use their talents for the glory of God in a practical way. The W.E. ministers in chapels and performs at social occasions also. It seeks to train students in instrumental performances and in functioning as a unit in a musical group. The W.E. has blessed our dinner hours several times by providing delightful entertainment. Many thanks to them for their service. CHAPEL CHOIR Music plays an important role in our worship in chapel. It helps us to focus our minds on Christ as we seek to learn from His Word. The Chapel Choir has been aiding us in this very area. The Chapel Choir seeks to minis- ter to people through song and does so effectively with regularity. The Choir in itself also seeks to train its members in music skills for future ministry. It serves us today with the perspective of upcoming ministry. AMBASSADOR CHOIR The Ambassador Choir is a group of Columbia Bible College students who desire to sing praises to their God, encourage, and challenge. With solos, some instrumental accompaniments, and personal testimonies by the choir members, the choir seeks to witness for Christ in proclaiming the message of reconciliation through song. LIVING HOPE Stirring classics and moving contemporary pieces form the repertoire of this small but effective vocal group. Living Hope, a travelling music ministry of C.B.C., has its purpose to testify to the hope of an inheritance to come based upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Summer tours are the highlight of this worthwhile ministry as the team moves out to impact others with their message in song and testimony. The group hopes through their experiences and service to introduce unbelievers to Christ and to edify believers, in forming them of C.B.C. and opportunities which can be found here for learning and ministry. Standing: Thad Smith, Patti Hodge, Woody Boyles, Candy Anderson, Steve Edwards; Kneeling: Melanie Baker, Abby Valdez GRADUATE SINGERS Reminiscent of the chamber groups of the sixteenth century, the Columbia Graduate Singers minister with their own style to the C.B.C. family and others. Seeking to minister to a broad audience, the C.G.S. tour regularly on weekends doing concerts and making other musical appearances. The C.G.S. hope through their ministry to convey a pure Biblical message through the medium of music to the edification of believers. The group internally provides development of both ministry and music skills which aid in future service. WCBC Piercing our campus air waves at 83 on your Amplitude Modulation dial, with 10 powerful watts of pure power is WCBC. WCBC, Columbia ' s campus radio station, provides an invaluable service to the student population by broadcasting chapels to those on campus who cannot attend and by providing an alternative in contemporary music to students with other programming also relevant to student life. WCBC enables students to develop their broadcasting skills while filling a gap in campus life. The request lines are often jammed. It ' s where all of your presets should be set — WCBC. 83AM. OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS This student organization ministers to the spiritual, social, physical, mental, and emotional needs of off- campus students and their families. The group attempts to create an atmosphere of fellowship and a spirit of comradery among off-campus students. Relationship between the single and married students are built and developed. And various activities are provided so that students can get to know each other on a more personal level. I -  Wy M P L k — V T -Jm j r 1? I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey . . . I asked for health, that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity, that I might do better things. I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise . . . I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God . . . I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life, I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men, most richly blessed. Author Unknown AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
