And since 1973, Dr. Paul Wright has blessed and challenged hundreds of students, calling them to commitment and action. His dedication to the Word of God, his love for Christ ' s Church, and his devotion to Christian men and women makes DR. WRIGHT one of the graduate school ' s most special features. What better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CGS than to say thank you to one who has watched us grow from an experiment in Christian education to an internationally known institution of ministry and ser- vice to the world. To a good friend, we express our deepest gratitude for thirteen years of love, counsel, and humble service. He prays with us ... in the classroom, in our churches, and in private, it ' s like sharing our hearts with a friend. He laughs with us . . . softball isn ' t just a game anymore, it ' s an adventure! He grows with us . . . ever willing to listen, eager to help, and con- stantly concerned. TO KNOW HIM AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD HAS SOUNDED FORTH FROM YOU . . . I Thessalonians 1:8 Dear Class of ' 86: When you reach your prime, another century and — this time around — another millennium will begin. Where will you be? Where will the world be? Will we have annihilated ourselves as some predict? Will the millennial reign of the King have begun? Will you be striking heavy blows for the Kingdom of Light, advancing with strength in the responsibility God gives you? No need to be apprehensive. Why? Because the Lord has done great things and you have seen it with your own eyes. Rejoice and be glad for the One who has done great things can be counted on to keep on doing great things! I am a true believer in the classes of 1986 because I have seen the results of the great things God has done in your lives already. Don ' t forget your Columbia roots — To Know Him And To Make Him Known. Keep in touch. Indeed, keep in partnership! Help us train the next generation of soldiers of the cross and call on us for help whenever there is any way we can assist. Keep moving out — don ' t give the enemy even a chance to regroup! And we will be praying for you. Grace and peace, f Luji Robertson McQuilkin President -m Master of Divinity !F ' 15 Jf HL BTj, ' V %Bl Ak HBb Mpiw w s James D. Acree with wife Ann Bruce C. In getting these needs met we pray that those in our class will be both strengthened and challenged in the Christian walk. Our desire as class officers is Philippians 2:3,4: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the inter- ests of others. Our desire for the class is Hebrews 10:24: And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. The CGS Certificate Class assembled for orientation in the grad auditorium on a hot, humid morning in early September of 1985. We were a diverse class: each class member brought with him a unique personality and unique experiences, talents, and abilities. In spite of our diversity, we were unified. We shared a common goal: To Know Christ And To Make Him Known. We looked forward to strengthening our relationship with Christ in the coming year through study in God ' s Word and interaction with other people. A few weeks after our orientation, we on the steering committee assumed our duties. We felt that we could best serve by promoting unity within the class. We sought to do this in a variety of ways: keeping everyone informed of how God was working in the class by sharing answers to prayer and results of chapels, study sessions, and other events; and seeking to meet various needs of class members that arose from time to time. The steer- ing committee has considered it a privilege to serve the class in this way. It has been exciting to be associated with a group of men and women who share Isaiah ' s attitude: Here am I, Lord, send me! We feel we speak for the class when we say that we look forward to a lifetime of getting to know Christ and making Him known — wherever that may be. Dr. Hamilton, Adviser Dear CGS Class of 1986: Don ' t be afraid ... (Joel 2:21) Adam said it first ... I was afraid . . . and I hid myself. Since that fateful day in the Garden, fear has brought torment to every descendant of that disobedient pair (I John 4:18). It was disobedience to God ' s Word that caused their fear, their I will defiance of God ' s thou shalt not command. That ' s sin, and the wages of sin is death. There is something more to fear than fear itself. As you stride across the platform of Shortess Chapel at Commencement, you will be entering a world of people who fear. But you have a message of hope for them: Perfect love casts out fear, God ' s love for them and the completion of that love as they respond in repentance, trust, and love for Him. God ' s antidote for fear? Trust in a God who loves. Jesus said, O ye of little faith . . . fear not (Luke 12:38,32). You serve a great God. You have nothing to fear! Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? . . . We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us (Romans 8:35,37). Whether like Stephen about to die as the stones were hitting him or like Peter about to be rescued from that Jerusalem jail by an angel, fear not! And when men and women who fear see in you a God who loves and is willing to take away sin (the cause of their fear), they will be drawn to Him, to His peace and joy. We will miss you when you leave us, but we will always love you and thank our God of love who brought our lives together . . . forever. Very sincerely in Christ, ( l j?- U-Jd y Terry C. Hulbert Dean m I Ken Towler Amy Ed Hartman, David Gordon Lord has taught me through CBC intellectual knowledge to my heart Heidi Schindler The activities at the Sr. Sneak were great — volleyball, go- ing to Mount Mitchell, going out for pizza, visiting Montreat An- derson College, spending time alone with the Lord, and last but definitely not least, the great time of fellowship in the Lord and with each other around the campfire. Susie Bennett The fellowship around the campfire at the Senior Sneak Fall Quarter brought the words of Ps. 126 to mind: Our mouths were filled with laugh- ter, our tongues with songs of joy. The Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for each member of the Senior Class and we are filled with joy! SENIORS Brattle- boro, VT; Elem. Ed. President ... Take heed to the min- istry which you have re- ceived in the Lord that you may fulfill it. Col. 4:17 In the Fall of 1985, the Senior Class was challenged by the Lord through this verse. Many times throughout Scripture we find challenges of this nature, concerning the individual ministries to which we have been called. Ministries will vary from person to person, but the challenge is the same: We are not to seek fulfillment in the ministry but to fulfill it. As Archippus was challenged by the Apostle Paul in this verse, may this year ' s Senior Class take heed to the ministry to which each one has been called so that glory may be brought to our Lord ' s name and that there may be greater progress of the gospel. President; Roslyn Wright, SMF Rep.; Julie Schaeffer, Treasurer; Charlotte Coleman, Secretary; Thurman Smith, Off-Campus Rep.; Dr. Raymond Scott, Adviser. The Junior Class has set for itself, in the 1985-86 school year, one purpose. This purpose can be summed up in the words of our year verse, Colossians 1:18. We have strived to do all things so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything. From class trips to planning for the Junior Senior Banquet, our purpose has been to establish in every class member the centrality of Christ and to advance His kingdom through the use and development of each member ' s gifts and talents. We have sought to enjoy this life He has given us, while at the same time remembering to glorify Him in all that we do! We have seen the importance of a life of involvement and activity as a necessary part of advancing the kingdom of Christ. God uses people who are involved and active in service and life to reach people, not to spend lives in isolation from the world. It is only by using our gifts that we develop them, and it is our responsibility as Christians to do this. As Juniors, we stand close to the threshold of ministry and we need to lay hold of every opportunity to prepare ourselves in our final months at CBC. Larry Deeter, President God has shown me over the years here at CBC that it is not who I am, but who He is that makes the difference! Great are you Lord! We are so grateful for the blessings we ' ve already received — great friendships, all that we ' ve learned in and out of the classroom, and good times together with our class. We are excited as we look forward to all that God has in store for us in our next years at CBC. Malcolm Hunter The Freshmen Class Left to Right, Front: Ann Hamilton, Secretary; Carolyn Arnemann, SMF Rep.; Debi Weatherford, Treasur- er; Rear: Scott Moore, Vice Pres.; Kevin Caiello, SMF Rep.; Doug Moore, President Misty graduated early from her high school in Panama where her parents work for the government. At sixteen years old, Misty is a CBC Freshman. Following highschool, Sandy worked as a dental assistant in Virginia. At age thirty-one, she has been out of school for thirteen years and is apprehensive about her role as a CBC Freshman. From upstate New York, Kevin spent four years in the Navy after high school. At twenty-four as a CBC Freshman, he is sensing God ' s call to missions. Diversity. Unity in diversity: is it possible? This is the challenge of the freshmen class. From all corners of the globe, freshmen, who have never met before, come together for academic purposes yet with spiritual goals, desiring unity. So many backgrounds, so many futures. Yet for this short moment in time, God has assembled this group, unique in all history, to combine the best of their backgrounds for the best of their futures. So the class becomes as a unit what none could be in themselves. Talents, strengths, gifts, con- versions, burdens are all blended together to form a class glorifying to God and encourag- ing to each other. The class has experienced joy and tragedy, success and failure. But life consists of all God has purposed for us to experience. And as there is growth, the strands of unity become bonds of love. WCBC is a student operated campus radio station. The station is open for anyone interested in campus radio and offers an avenue for students to get firsthand experience in broadcasting. We have a variety of programs and music, adapting the format to that of our listeners. WCBC is located behind Shortess Chapel adjacent to WMHK ' s studio. Paul DiToma, Station Manager Off-Campus Student ' s Association Joe Parker, Dean; Steve Burchett, Prayer Group Chairman; Bill Steele, Vice Pres.; Rodney Lindsay, Presi- dent; Mark Wenger, Singles Rep.; Mary Beth Wenger, Singles Rep.; Liz Horn, Secretary The OCSA Chapel this school year has followed the theme of authentic Christian living. The emphasis has been on raising the awareness and challenging off-campus students to live genuine lives. Dean Joe Parker has been the key note speaker for the school year on the selected theme. The Lord has blessed in a tremendous way, and many lives have been changed as a result of these chapels. We are touching the lives of married couples through Couples ' Luncheons throughout this year. The theme was Enriching Family Life, particularly our relationships with children. Themes were as follows: Fall Quarter was How To Love Your Children. Winter Quarter was How To Build Self-Esteem, Spring Quarter was How To Dis cipline. We provided social activities for the families and singles as well as an off-campus picnic, Histor- ic Home Tour, Riverbank Zoo Trip, etc. Our ministry was not limited to one group of people, but also to the singles, Pi-Gamma, International Students, and the poor and oppressed within our community. One of the highlights of the school year was the Wives Appreciation Night which was held in the Spring. On this night, the wives of all the Off-Campus Students are recognized and honored for their important role of support and encouragement to their husbands. The backbone of our ministry is the Small Prayer Groups that are coordinated by Steve Burchett. All of the projects, activities, and chapels would not be successful without the fervent prayers of the righteous. Rodney Lindsay, President STUDENT WIVES FOLLOWSHIP PI GAMMA . . . Many have come here for training so that they can return to their countries and be equipped to spread God ' s good news to those in their homeland or other harvest fields. The ISA ' s objectives are: 1) to in- form the internationals of all the avenues that the school has to care for their phys- ical and spiritual well-being; 2) to promote fellowship among them with MK ' s and Americans with overseas experience; and 3) to maximize the contribution of every international student to the entire student body, to the churches in Columbia, and to the outreach ministry of other international students at the University of South Caroli- na. The International Student Committee tries to meet these goals by encouraging and integrating the international student body into the all-encompassing family of God. The well-known motto of CBC, To Know Him And To Make Him known, stands forth as the purpose of our school. First, one comes to know Christ better and as a direct result, one will desire to see Him known by others. The Student Foreign Missions Fellowship (SFMF) is a student organization which seeks to work in the area of the latter half of CBC ' s motto. The purpose statement of the SFMF, to see that everyone attend- ing CBC CGS personally comes to grips with the missionary heart of God, presupposes 1) that God desires to reach the world and 2) that each believer is, to some extent, responsible to God in this endeavor. In order to present the missionary heart of God before each student, the SFMF con- ducts various activities which include the Global Outreach Conference ' 85, the World Christian Week, chapel time, World Awareness Prayer Groups, Geographical Prayer Groups, the Summer Missions Project to Italy, and support of summer missionaries. It is our prayer that, due to our efforts in these activities, CBC CGS students are more controlled by the love of Christ, and are therefore able To Know Him And To Make Him Known. John Crutchfield, President World Christian Week Malcolm Hunter, the speaker for this year ' s World Chris- tian Week left a challenge of the cost of discipleship that all of us should heed. May we remember this: Jesus is responsi- ble for all the con- sequences of our obedience to His commands. (Malcolm Hunter) Left to Right, Mary Hatfield Front: Steve Ballenger, Ken Byers, Roz Wright, Becky Vail, Rear: Mark Landrum, , Jackie Scott, Laura Sullins, Heidi Schindler, Eric Froelich World Prayer --• ' Habitual, informed, extended world prayer! One of the most basic elements of a life that has come to grips with the missionary heart of God is intercession for the millions of people beyond the reach of the gospel. SFMF ' s goal in the area of world prayer is two-fold: to help students fulfill their re- sponsibility in prayer while at school, and to help stu- dents develop toward a life discipline of global pray- er. Lecturn Prayer Guides, which help professors to lead in missionary prayer before class, focus on ha- bitual prayer. World Awareness Prayer Groups, involving the whole student body for twenty minutes during chapel time, emphasize informed praying. Geographical Prayer Groups, meeting voluntarily for one to two hours a week, give opportunity for ex- tended prayer. The ends of the earth will be reached, but not without habitual, informed, extended prayer! Dan Scott, Vice President of SFMF Ambassador Choir The Ambassador Choir is composed of a group of Columbia Bible College students who desire to sing the message of praise, encouragement, and challenge in concerts across the southeastern states. This year the message of reconciliation to God as found in 2 Corinthi- ans 5:18 is the theme. The concerts combine solos, small ensembles, and some instrumen- tal accompaniments with personal testimonies of choir members. In this way the choir members seek to become effective Ambassadors for Christ. Jerry Friesen, Director Chapel Choir The Chapel Choir is a choral organization open to singers from both the Bible College and the Graduate School. Most of the ministry is on campus during the chapel sessions. Those whose schedules are full on the weekends and thus cannot travel with the Ambassador Choir or Living Hope choral groups have this unique opportunity for vocal ministry to the college family. The music performed by the Chapel Choir ranges from contemporary to traditional. It also provides occasions for some of its members to develop accompanying skills. Student directors are given an invaluable opportunity to refine their conducting skills by leading part rehearsals and directing some numbers in concerts. The Chapel Choir is considered a foundational choral organization that provides training for entering the other vocal groups. The purpose of the ministry of the Chapel Choir is to enable the hearers to worship the Lord and to be edified. The music is chosen with this in mind. Although most of the ministry is to the college family, the choir sings in local churches once a quarter. Bill Supplee, Director The Graduate Singers The Columbia Graduate Singers is a group of about twenty selected students from the graduate school, who have the desire to sharpen their musical ministry tools. After being selected in the fall for the school year, the ensemble begins work in prep- aration for singing about six concerts in the surrounding community and some other ap- pearances in the chapel. The concert theme for 1985-86 is found in Colossians 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another with psalms, with hymns, and with spiritual songs. Our desire is to use a variety of musical styles to teach and admon- ish, and to praise and worship the Lord. It provides a unique opportunity both to develop further skills in playing and to minister through music. Playing in the Wind Ensemble enables the instrumentalists not only to retain his level of performance but also to increase his playing abilities. Performances are integrated into campus life in such a fashion as to require minimal extra time on the student ' s part. Most of the ministry is in the chapel where opportunities range from playing preludes and postludes to accompanying congregational singing. Patriotic occasions call out the Wind Ensemble in full force, and there are occasional concerts of dinner music in the dining room. The purpose of the Wind Ensemble is to incite those who listen to praise and worship the Lord. Selections are chosen that have words familiar to most of the worshippers. The Ensemble especially enjoys playing for congregational sing-alongs. It is their deep desire that many will be drawn closer to the Lord as a result of their performance. Bill Supplee, Director Living Hope Left to Right, Front: Ginny Byers, Becky Hess, Debbie Holly Rear: David Sawyer, Woody Boyles, Richard Mull. Living Hope is a small ensemble of Columbia Bible College students who sing contem- porary Christian music. The team ' s primary focus for ministry is youth. During the school year Living Hope performs several concerts within a 100 mile radius of Columbia; and for five weeks in the summer of 1986, the group will tour from South Carolina to Texas, singing in churches, camps, and high schools. Through music and personal testimonies, the team desires to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, our Living Hope. Everyone in the Bible College is a member of the Student Association. It elects its own officers which represent the student body to the Admin- istration and Coordinating Council. It seeks to promote unity through the school socials such as school picnics, blood drives, films, and other social activities. The officers of the Student Association also seek to help the college in fulfilling its objectives by suggesting areas where change is needed as well as affirming the school struc- ture where no change is needed. One of its basic purposes is to act as a liason between the students and the administra- tion in order to assist them in creating an environment most conducive to the purposes of total life training. Involvement in positions of the Student Association allow a person to exercise his leadership skills, and good continuing leadership is needed in the church of Jesus Christ today in order that we might fulfill the second half of our school ' s motto: To know Him AND to make Him known. Bob Uhls, President STUDENT PREACHER ' S FELLOWSHIP TCR THE WORD OF THE LORD ' C UNDED FORTH FROM YOU Front: Terry Green, Secretary Treasurer; Back Left: Jaye Morgan, President; Back Right: Charles Schultz, Vice President The Student Preacher ' s Fellowship was established as a new student organization in the 1985 aca- demic year. A group of concerned students realized the need and the potential of an organization com- mitted to the preaching of God ' s Word. This vision extends both to the foreign field and here in this country. Seminars were held throughout the year to promote this awareness. Our speakers ranged from adjunct faculty, to visiting speakers, and members of our own CBC family. It is exciting to see the committment to sound expository preaching grow here at CBC, especially with the schools ' new program in evangelism. The Student Preacher ' s Fellowship wants CBC to be known for providing our world with preachers who can rightly divide the word of truth with power and authority, to the glory of God. Once upon a CBC Spring Quarter, twelve representatives for the coming year were chosen for the one hundred and seventy five royal maidens. They decided to call themselves Women ' s Dorm Council as it had a familiar ring and seemed to carry some authority. Having big plans and dreams, the twelve willingly volunteered time and energy to organize the Big Sister Program, Prayer Groups, and social events like Open House and the Sneak. But soon after beginning, they realized it was impossible to do all that was expected of them by themselves. They could not maintain a pleasant dorm atmosphere or hold the maidens up to their highest. So it was that they banded together and sought help from their King who wonderfully aided them. Then they continued with thanks and praise recognizing that He alone could use their world for His Kingdom to have eternal value. i Lynn Powell, President raHH Men ' s Dorm Council Left to Right, Front: Dean Shaver, Dean Riddle; Rear: Bobby Owings, Vice President; Larry Deeter, Floor Leader; John Cox, Floor Leader; Steve Nygaard, Floor Leader; Bobby Young, Floor Leader; Mike Glass, Floor Leader; Fred Forester, President; Dana Danielson, Floor Leader Dorm Councils have traditionally been perceived as be- ing primarily disciplinary and social organizations. This year the Men ' s Dorm Council has sought to have a spiritu- al and relational influence which we believe to be the true primary purpose of the Dorm Council. Although we had a great time developing creative ideas in our socials (espe- cially hall dates and Open House), we also struggled with helping students with practical, everyday issues such as purposes of discipline, dating, and authority. The Floor Leaders; were encouraged to be sensitive to the men ' s needs and to be strong spiritual leaders and examples. We hope that this emphasis continues and that Men ' s Dorm Council plays an ever-increasing role in the develop- ment of men of God. As always, God ' s Word proves true — leadership is service, but what a privilege to serve a group of students and faculty such as we have here at CGS! Our prayer in the midst of all our activities (orientation, chapels, socials, Awanita, Grad Banquet . . . ) has been that needs might be met and that students would leave here better equipped to serve the Lord wherever He might lead them. As representatives of the student body during this Jubilee year, we must say that we appreciate the fact that God has sustained this institu- tion for fifty years. In most ways, this year has been much like previous ones, yet at the same time, we recognize that it provides us with a special opportunity to reflect on God ' s goodness and faithfulness toward our school. By the way, thank you, Dr. Hulbert, for your very practical guidance and encouragement. We couldn ' t have done it without you! We proceeded to accomplish these goals this year through various means. One activity that we used was the GRITS BOWL. This is a highly complicated flag football game in which the students from the North compete against the stu- dents from the South, all of which have to be attending CBC at the time of the game. The outcome of this year ' s game was no different than any other year previously. The South rose again and defeated the North 24-7. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 10:39—11:1 A fellow worker, this year, shared these verses with me. They have been an encour- agement from the Lord as we have undertaken the challenge of the Ridderhof Center. The project is far beyond any this institution has ever undertaken — both in scope of the project and in the financial commitment to enable the project to be built. There was considerable faith on the part of our President in envisioning the need for this facility. And, we have seen God ' s hand in each step of this process to give us encouragement of His part in this undertaking. My prayer in 1985 86 has been that while we seek God ' s provision during construction and we look for Him to show Himself to us through the times of waiting, abundance, and rejoicing, that we would see Him and would become dependent on Him. That we would unite together in a bond of unity and prayer in seeking our Lord and learn lessons that will take us through life. That He is trustworthy, and when He calls, He provides. I trust that none of us has missed this very special part of the project — a chance to see God at work among us to encourage and to give us faith. What a rare privilege to be in the generation that has this object lesson placed before us. A chance to trust the Lord in ways that others have not. May this be a life-changing experience — one that would stretch and cause us to seek God in ways far beyond what we would ever imagine. nda ' ntly beyon all that we ask or think be th©.flJ f5%aS _ ■ I
