COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE COLUMBIA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIBLE AND MISSIONS 1985 FINIAL VOLUME 46 I i Post Office Box 3122, Columbia, South Carolina 29230 (803) 754-4100 DEDICATION Took up here! And students have been doing just that since 1947. LOOKING AT THE BLACKBOARD ... and seeing there his chartwork spread across the board bringing truth to life. The simple illustrations have been cemented in our minds to remind us of the profound truths we have studied in God ' s Word. LOOKING IN THE SCRIPTURES ... and discovering there the truth of God with a depth and comprehensiveness we never thought possible. We have seen not only the relevancy of every part of Scripture, but the wonder of God ' s great plan as it progresses through the whole Bible. LOOKING FOR HIS COUNSEL . . . and finding there his availability, wisdom, acceptance, and understanding combined with a solid biblical foundation. His wise counsel has helped us understand our past and shape our future in light of God ' s directives and provisions for Christian living, for family life, for ministry. LOOKING ON THE TEACHER ... and observing there a man of God whose very life illustrates the reality of his teaching. We have marvelled at his humble personal- ity transformed in the classroom into dynamic, Spirit-filled proclamation. LOOKING TO JEHOVAH . . . and experiencing there the joy and victory found in the personal knowledge of God. We have been led by our teacher to be constantly amazed and drawn to the God who works in a mysterious way his wonders to perform. With gratitude to God, we dedicate the 1985 Finial in honor of one who has constantly reminded us to . . . Look up here! James M. Buck Hatch The words of Jeremiah word of Jehovah ... the Then said Jehovah unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? Jer. 24:3 Then Jehovah put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. Jer. 1:9 Jer. 1:1,4 ... whatsoever thing Jehovah shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you. Jer. 42:4 ... but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah. Jer. 9:24 Dear Class of ' 85, The Lord gave the Word through your teachers and fellow students. And directly, from His Word by the Holy Spirit ' s illumination. When we give you that diploma, it means we think you have received enough of God ' s Word to be an effective proclaimer. That is quite a vote of confidence! Now, Great is the company of those who proclaim it. I hope the company will be one hundred percent of the Class of ' 85. That would, indeed, be great. We will do more than hope, however. We will pray, and we will stand ready to help you succeed - personally and in ministry. So keep in touch, and stand with us in the great task of increasing the company of those who faithfully proclaim the Word. Hudson Taylor COLLEGE SERVICE STUDENT It CENTER STUDENT COORDINATING COUNCIL Rick Mead, President Roger Ogburn, Vice President Holly McCleery, Treasurer Bev Nagelkirk, Social Chairman Garth Wright, Special Project Mark Potter, Koinonia Group Leader Bryan Friesen, Koinonia Group Leader Dr. Terry Hulbert, Advisor To say, Student Coordinating Council, is to adequately describe the organization. But, more specifical- ly, it ' s a group of students that represent the entire scope of leadership at C.B.C. C.G.S. This cross section of students serves in several capacities; representing the student to different groups is among the most important. During the course of a school year the Student Coordinating Council will meet with the Board of Trustees, the Cabinet, the Advisory Council and sit on the Student Affairs Committee. A secon- dary role is that of trouble-shooting. The Student Coordinating Council makes sure that the many activities and events are properly scheduled. The Student Coordinating Council also sponsors several chapels that deal directly with student leadership, leadership banquets, the Formal, blood drives, all-school events and supports the Pro-Life Prayer Group. STUDENT ASSOCIATION Our goals this year as student leaders were three-fold. First, we wanted to encourage students to become involved in their student government by taking part in planning school and social activities. Second, we wanted to create a spiritual atmosphere on campus that would be conducive to spiritual growth and edification. Third, we wanted to emphasize the importance of being prepared to face our world in a mature manner with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Underlying our three goals was the constant prayer for a spiritual awakening in our hearts as a student body. We trusted the Lord to help us meet our goals and answer our prayer as we give Him all of the glory and praise. Student Association was responsible for The Grits Bowl, Men and Women ' s Open House, Blood Drives, spiritual life films, The Concern, starting Student Preacher ' s Fellowship, other school governments, socials, and activities, and Sing-Outs. A. CONCERN The Student Association was involved in reaching out to the black community of Columbia and other ethnic groups this year through the S. A. Concern. The Concern is a student scholarship fund which began last year as a project to raise money to help local area blacks receive biblical train- ing at C.B.C. We, the Student Association, believe that by giving more opportunities to black leaders for quality training, they will return to their local communities to impact the city with the Gospel of )esus Christ. This year the Student Association voted to set a goal of $15,000.00 for the scholarship fund. By mid-year, $6,500.00 was raised, and we were able to help several students with their financial burdens. The Student Association praises the Lord for what He has done and for what He is going to do in the future with the Concern. GRITS BOWL THE BLOOD DRIVE Organized by the Coordinating Council STAFF This year has been a trying year for those of us on the Finial Staff. Many obstacles have crossed our path as we prepared this book. Even so, we are not a people without hope, for our God reigns and is sovereign in all the affairs of our life. Yes, we have had many problems, but we know that God causes them to be for our growth and our good. Some may say Praise the Lord anyway, but we say, Praise the Lord BECAUSE ... For He is Yahweh. Coit Morrison, Editor EstreHa Acosta, Photographer Mark de Felice, Photographer Roger Dye, Photography Editor Tim Frazee, Copy Sue Lloyd, Copy Editor Wendy Mullinax, Photographer lann Parrish, Copy Angela Valentine, Layout Dan Youle, Layout Dr. Do n Hall, Advisor Miss Ruth Marshall, Co-Advisor GRAD LIFE COUNCIL The Graduate Life Council represents one of the best opportunities on campus for graduate students to serve their fellow grads. The primary responsibility to the grads revolves around the word life, spiritual life, social life, academic life, life during mid-terms, life after BIB 505, and life surviving on 24-hour days . . . It is fun, it ' s work, it ' s rewarding. Rewarding in giving back something to a school that has given so much to us, and rewarding in spending time with an advisor we love, Dr. Terry Hulbert. We praise Cod for what He has taught us this year through our time with Grad Life Council. mmi OFF CAMPUS STUDENTS Our Lord has given us a theme this year — It is God who makes things grow!! (I Cor. 3:7). He has been mightily at work in the lives of the Off-Campus students moving us toward maturity in our pursuit of Him, maturity that comes both through stormy trials, and through showers of blessing. This spiritual growth has come as the fruit of C.B.C. ' s total life training. The Off-Campus Student Association serves these students by pro- viding opportunities for them to get special input on how to live the victorious Christian life in their particular situations. One highlight has been our Off-Campus Couples Luncheons, Growing Marriages at C.B.C. These have been times of rich fellowship, with Mr. Hatch feeding our souls from God ' s Word. We also seek to facilitate communication and unity between the students and administration. Standing in the gap is a joy as both stu- dents and administration have been eager to know Him and to make Him known. Indeed, since God has caused the growth, it is He who gets the glory. The purpose of this association shall be to encourage student responsi- bility in the control and regulation of dormitory life and the promotion of Christian fellowship. Based on these two statements, ' 84- ' 85 Dorm Council has sought to develop an atmosphere of service and foster an attitude of encouragement on the women ' s side of campus through a variety of differ- ent events. These have included such activities as hall dates with brother halls, women ' s open house, and slumber parties within the dorms. We have also endeavored to fairly represent the C.B.C. women to the college admin- istration. It is our hope and prayer that through our efforts this year Cod has been glorified. THE VILLAGE THE SERVICE CHAIN THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE The purpose of the Service Chain is to help facilitate meeting needs among the Village family. From each street two coordinators arrange meals, babysitting, or whatever the need may be for their own street. Those serving in this capacity are Gail Brower, Lorraine Abeyta, Suzanne Pennings, Teresa Gasaway, Barb Kaat, and Marsha Theurer. Cindy Hyberg organizes the Service Chain for the whole Village. True christian community spirit comes forth as families in need are helped. While time and finances are tight, the Lord has seen fit to bless those that give of their resources The Social Committee is involved in planning for a variety of social events. These get-togethers are planned so that the residents of the Village will have opportunities to meet with their neighbors for fellowship and fun. At the beginning of each school year the committee plans a Dessert where all resi- dents are invited. A Thanksgiving Dinner is also held for those who want to participate. Throughout the year there may be progressive dinners, street get- togethers, and farewell parties. This year ' s committee is headed up by JoAnne King, Barb Binderwald, Lori DeCleene, Mary Keefe, and Betsy Kobin. Mrs. Marga- ret Powell is our faithful friend and advisor. Kevin Johnson, President Bruce Mills, Vice President Kathy Woolner, Secretary Allen Terry, Treasurer Dr. Norman Hoyt, Advisor STUDENT MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP It was the desire of the Student Missions Fellowship this year to increase the students ' commitment to prayer, realizing that the most effective mission work is accomplished through the faithful prayers of the saints, both on and off the mission field. Much hard work was invested in the various activities directed by the council members. These activities in- cluded GO ' 84, World Christian Week, the Summer Missions Project to Tanzania, Geographical Prayer Groups, periodic chapels, Urbana, summer missions seminars and opportunities, special activities, publicity, and outreach to other schools and churches. At GO ' 84, the annual South East Regional Student Missions Conference, over 100 C.B.C students made commitments either to pursue a career in missions or be completely open to the Lord should he call them into missions in the future. Then in January, SMF held World Christian Week. It featured two pastors, Bill Hogan and Charlie Long, who spoke on the crucial role of the local church in missions. Through means such as these, SMF strove to make the slogan of GO ' 84 a reality in every student ' s life — Christ ' s Purpose — Our Passion! GEOGRAPHICAL PRAYER GROUPS The format of the SMF geographical prayer groups took a new twist this year, allowing the whole student body to meet in special groups during prayer time before chapel. They met at least twice a month and were presented with the conditions and prayer requests of a different country, which they then prayed for. Cod used this to give everyone a broader perspective of His world and how we may be in- volved and pray. In addition, small prayer bands, focusing regularly on one particular area, were available for those interested in a specific part of the world. WORLD CHRISTIAN WEEK World Christian Week (January 22-25, 1985) was the third annual campus mis- sions conference. This year ' s theme, The Commissioned Mission Church, focused on every local church ' s involvement in the Great Commission. Dr. William Hogan, pastor of Church of the Savior in Wayne, Pennsylvania, was the main speaker. THE TEAM Every summer SMF selects a group consisting of one faculty member and six to eight students from both the undergraduate and graduate schools to represent C.B.C. in ministry overseas. This group functions as a team in the areas of evangelism, discipleship, teaching, preaching, and whatever needs or opportunities arise. As well as laboring diligently as ambassadors for God and C.B.C, each team member experiences joys and trials in ministry, team- work, and interpersonal relations which encourage growth in his her Chris- tian living and involvement in missions worldwide. The location of the Project rotates among several continents and with dif- ferent CBC CGS alumni. The summer of ' 85 the team will be working at Majahida Bible Training School in Beriada, Tanzania, in Africa. Mitchell Darnell Martha Darnell Johnny DeHaan Steve Ballenger Robert Hale Patty Toland Vicki Scheib Irene Niven Terry Powell, Advisor TO KNOW HIM AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The International Student Association brings together all CBC CGS students who came from foreign countries. Our objectives are (1) to inform the internationals of all avenues the school has to care for their physical and spiritual well-being; (2) to promote fellowship among them with MK ' s and Americans with some experience overseas; (3) to maximize the contribution of every international student to the entire student body, to the churches in Columbia and to the outreach minis- try to other international students at the University of South Carolina. The International Student Committee seeks to implement these objectives through the total mobilization of the international student body. Whether in the Columbia area or far away, the music and testimony of the Ambassador Choir has drawn people into a deeper walk with their Savior to the glory of God. GRADUATE SINGERS Columbia Graduate Singers are chosen each fall for the current school year. They perform with the goal of reflecting the Christian life through music and by example. Concerts are presented on campus, in the Co- lumbia area, and in churches of the adjacent region. The content of the music this year reveals the love of God, as seen in the gift of His Son. Other aspects of God ' s character are also seen, particularly His power and holiness. These qualities are followed by music which exhorts the listener to fear the Lord, to come to Him for help and to be at peace in Him. It is the Singers ' prayer that the Lord will use these songs for worship and edification. c lr LIVING HOPE Living Hope is a small musical ensemble with the following objectives: To present Jesus Christ in such a way that others would find salvation and become hungry to be rooted and grounded in Him and His Word. To use music as a non-threatening means to present the plan of salvation and the abundant life with Christ as Lord. To incorporate the scriptures and personal testimony about the difference that Christ has made in their lives. To be aware that they represent Christ and Co- lumbia Bible College not only through music but also in their appearance, speech and lifestyle. The music they sing is contemporary in nature, yet traditional in message. The songs are easily ac- cepted and enjoyed by people of all ages. The team is available for church services, youth meetings, summer camps, backyard Bible clubs and retreats. CHAPEL CHOIR The Chapel Choir is a growing organization on campus utilizing the singing abilities of many in the student body. Freshmen through graduate students joyfully minister in Chapels and occasional- ly off campus in churches. The Chapel Choir joins with the Wind Ensemble in festive occasions to aid the college family in celebration of the Lord. Directed by Bill Supplee, one of its functions is to train singers for membership in other musical organizations on campus. The student director is graduate student, Lisa Leavel. Through membership dues and one person from each family working a few hours a month, we strive together to save both time and money. The co-operative effort has been going for six years. Managers: John and Lori DeCleene STUDENT WIVES FELLOWSHIP Pi Gamma . . . (Faithful Wives) The Student Wives Fellowship sought to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and ministry prep- aration geared to the needs of married women students and wives of students. It also served as a place where the wives could come and meet new friends and have a good time of fellowship. This year ' s theme, The hidden person of the heart, taken from I Peter 3:3-6, emphasized the importance of developing a gentle and quiet spirit before the Lord and with others. Regular on campus meetings and city area prayer groups conducted throughout the- year included guest lectures by spiritually mature women as well as times of Bible study, corporate prayer, and fellowship. The topics focused on specific areas essential to our roles as wives and as wives of Chris- tian workers. Melissa Thornton, President Laurie Vogie, Vice President Teresa Gasaway, Secretary Treasurer Cathy Bohannon, Prayer Group Coordinator Chris Burrows, Communications Coordinator Beverly Wade, Refreshment Coordinator Linda Mead, Hospitality Coordinator Barbara Myers, Nursery Coordinator Connie Meaker, Music Coordinator (Not Pictured) Vermelle Parker, Advisor STUDENT PREACHER ' S FELLOWSHIP This year, the Student Association, along with several other concerned students, started a new organization on campus . . . The Student Preacher ' s Fellowship. We recognized that C.B.C. has a strong missions emphasis and for that we praise the Lord. We felt that the strong emphasis on missions should be balanced with a solid emphasis on preaching. The Student Preacher ' s Fellowship wanted to build an awareness of local church and pastoral ministry in more of our students. Supper seminars were held throughout the year to promote this awareness. It was a pleasure to sit under Godly faculty members who shared from their hearts what we should expect when we enter the field, whether as a pastor or a missionary. The Student Preacher ' s Fellowship wants C.B.C. to be known for providing our world with preachers who can rightly divide the word of truth with power and authority. We trust that the Student Preacher ' s Fellowship will be a building block the Lord will use to mold His called ones into seasoned preachers of the Gospel. Rick Walker, President Jaye Morgan, Vice President Chuck Schultz, Secretary Treasurer THE WIND ENSEMBLE The Wind Ensemble of Columbia Bible College gives an opportunity for students who play brass, woodwind or percussion instruments to use their skills in ministering on campus. A wide range of literature is studied and performed to encourage worship and to provide entertainment for the whole college family. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Bill Supplee, plays primarily in chapels with occasional concerts in local churches. First, we are committed to pray for the needs of the class as a whole as well as for specific individual needs that are apparent. We are well aware that without the Holy Spirit ' s enabling, our studies would become an academic exercise void of spiritual vitality. Second, and probably our most visible service, is helping with the academic needs of the class. This includes organizing study sessions, providing study aids for exams, and organizing special tutoring when needed. Third, we want to contribute to the social needs of the class. This encompasses a variety of activities such as arranging luncheons with individual faculty members, providing baby-sitting and transportation lists, as well as organizing fellowship socials. By addressing ourselves to the spiritual, academic and social needs of the new graduate students, we can help create an atmosphere that is more conducive to the growth and preparation of God ' s harvesters. Yates SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Mike Gangarosa, President Mike McQuillan, Vice President Grace Bateman, Secretary Debbie Powell, Treasurer Dr. Richard Belcher, Advisor Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; when he was one I called him, then I blessed him and multiplied him. Is. 51:2 As we go forth into God ' s harvest we seniors would do well to keep in mind certain principles drawn from this Isaiah passage and its surrounding contest. Abraham received God ' s gracious calling to be a key element in God ' s plan for the world. In the process of this plan ' s unfolding he was pro- vided with every needful blessing and not one of God ' s promises failed him. So, as Isaiah calls the nation of Israel to look at God ' s track record of grace and faithfulness, not at their own of failure, we seniors will benefit from stopping in the midst of God ' s unfolding plan in our lives to meditate on the fact that the same grace and faithfulness that was Abraham ' s, that was Israel ' s, is ours as we work to fulfill God ' s purposes in the world. Seniors, be comforted and take the time to Be still, and know that I am God. Anita G. Adams Prayer Croup Leader (3,4), Ambassador Choir (2,3), Switchboard Operator (3,4). It is the Lord Christ you are serving. It has been the hope of the Junior Class Cabinet to provide an atmosphere within which each member of the class may be a unique individual, serving our Lord Jesus with all his heart in whatever capacity the Lord has called him. Our prayer is that rather than becoming unified in outward appearance and behavior, we would become unified in purpose of heart: To know Him and to make Him known. Kevin R. Alderman Allen D. It has been an enjoyable experience and a good witness for our Lord to use basketball as his vehicle. P. E. POINTS The body of the Christian belongs to the Lord, is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and is the physical vehicle through which t he believer glorifies the Lord and communicates the Gospel. Optimum physical fitness is essential to all aspects of health: spiritual, mental, social, and emotional. P.E. Points are designed to develop optimum physical fitness while in school and life- long habits of proper care for the body. A minimum number of points must be achieved each week, and they can be earned through personal exercise, physical education classes, or intramurals. CBC sees this as such an important facet of to- tal life training that it is a requirement of this institution. Zimmerman, Stephen P. :j$4-t @ Wl So we come to the last page in the 1985 yearbook. Perhaps your last year at C.B.C. or CCS. You are going out, where? To do what? With whom? However your answer, be assured, that Cod wants you to go with Him. The Lord gave the Word, His word. He wants you to know His word and to trust His promises. Are you prepared to do that? Could it be that spiritual drought is your portion? That after years of studying about God you are a stranger to this? That somehow in your quest for knowledge you have lost that first glow and vision? The children of Israel were in that position time and time again. Of trusting God, knowing His protection and providing. The being caught up in their own lives and forgetting their first love. Read ludges 3,4,6,10,13 and II Chronicles 14,15,17-20,23, 24. See there a nation falling away and being revived only to fall away again. Clear features emerge. Notice 1)that in all these instances revival started with an individual 2)confession of sin and forsaking sin were part of the process of revival. 3)when people were revived they returned to Cod ' s Word and to true spiritual worship as He ordained. And lastly, 4)all these de- scriptions of awakenings were shortly followed by a period of declension, a turning away again from Cod. Hence, over and over again, we have men like Isaiah, David, Malachi crying out revive Thy work, O God, or wilt Thou revive us again, O Lord? Can we be with ourselves? Are we any better off? We are horrified when T.V. brings before us the plight of starving millions in some drought ridden land. We send money, grain, as well as offer up prayer. All as it should be. But say brothers and sisters, there is an even greater famine that I detect, in the church of Jesus Christ today. People with parched spiritual lives. Christians with resources the equal of which has never been known yet doing so little. Christians supposedly with supernatural power yet so often as we exercise the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we evidence parched lives and joyless features. Are our churches today much better? Within forty or fifty years of the church of Ephesus being founded, in Revelation 2 we read that God has something against them. He knew their works, they were known to Him. They had zeal, they were orthodox, patient, but thou hast lost thy first love. They had yielded to the temptation of putting something, even something good, before God. This was a grave mistake and God told them three things. Remembrance is the first step in the process of recovery. The remembrance of God ' s dealings with us and His sovreign grace bestowed on all who have received His gift of eternal life. Second, repentance is required for forgotten promises, broken vows, abandoned pledges, all those things which were promised in the first flush of spiritual belief. Third, repeat the first works. That is, do again in the same joyous enthusiastic spirit the works that we first accomplished when we knew and enjoyed a vital relationship with Jesus Christ. Can God bring revival again? With the authority of t he Word of God I say yes, He will do it, He wants to do it when He can find a church He can trust; when He finds a man or woman whom He can trust with revival. Are you willing to be the person that God can trust? As you come to the end of this academic year, perhaps your last year at C.B.C. or CCS., will you be known as one of the greats? Great is the company who proclaims the word of God. You can be. He wants you to be. Dr. Brian Kingsmore
