Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1984 volume:

I Dean of Women ' s Office Columbia Bible College P. O. Box 3122 Columbia, S. C. 29203 COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE COLUMBIA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIBLE AND MISSIONS 1984 FINIAL High above the sidewalks of Hampton Street in Columbia, crowning each of the twin towers of the old campus, were the bud-like finials. It was these finials, as the crowning adornment of the building, that inspired the name for the yearbook of C. B. C. VOLUME 45 THE COVER The trumpets that God ordered Moses to amake were fashioned from pure hand- beaten silver. They were nearly three feet long, composed of a narrow tube that was flared slightly at one end to catch the breath, while the other end was flared like a bell. Their purpose was to announce the beginning of an event to the congregation (Numbers 10:2-10). On this our 60th year, we would announce to all, God ' s continued blessing to us. Pray for those that are sent out into the harvest, so that when the Lord comes again, with a shout and the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, they will be found as a worker that need not be ashamed. Post Office Box 3122, Columbia, South Carolina 29230 (803) 754-4100 Well, yes and no, is an oft used clause in Dr. Albert McCallister ' s vocabulary. The expression epitomizes a habit of thought towards learning realities. That is, an attitude of a willing acceptance which encourages the student to think further and to dialogue more about the issue. After all, the ultimate purpose of learning is not simply right and wrong answers, rather it is guiding and di- recting the pupil ' s mind to independent and creative thinking. For over a decade, God has been using Mac ' s unique style, a smooth blend between philosopher and pastor, to train fu- ture kingdom workers. The Finial dedication is simply a token of expressed gratitude. In a society that is seldom thankful, we say, Thank you, and please continue to provide your sterling leadership and standard of excellence both in and out of the classroom. DEDICATED TO Dr. Albert McCallister I came to C.B.C. with training in theology and pastoral experience, and found that the need for apologetics and philosophy was in line with my further interest; and the Lord has led me along in unbelievable ways to the point where I ' m about to get a Ph.D. in philosophy! It still staggers my imagination. My advice to graduates would be along the lines of the great needs which manifest themselves in all unbelieving cultures. Learn as much as you possibly can about the culture about you — its backgrounds and principles — so that when you present the gospel, it goes right to the heart of matters! mm Jjj . Room 107 was Dr. McQuilkin ' s office. It was also the busi- ness office, and the cloak room for faculty and stu- dents. Room 209 was the only class room. A little or- gan stood in the corner, and chapel exercises as well as classes and prayer meet- ings were held here. In 1927, with the approval of the South Carolina State Board of Education and the legislature, a four year course was established and Columbia Bible School be- came Columbia Bible College. 1941 Fmial A Discription of the New Campus Site... One of the highest sec- tions of the land over- looks the restful river and presents a breathless view. The smooth lake, surrounded by woods... adds to the grandeur of the property and affords a wonderful place for prayer and meditation. You would have to see the property for yourself to fully appreciate the beauty and potentiality of this God-given tract of land. 1954 Finial In 1958 construction began, and in 1960 the present campus was occupied. Look! See the campus — all new and spare and clean looking? His messages on the unreached and his report on India were heavy and heart searching, increasing my awareness of my lack of prayer and burden for these multitudes. His messages on prayer to open doors and being strong and do- ing exploits were convicting and chal- lenging, giving much food for thought for the future. His message on Why I am a Fundamentalist greatly deepened my appreciation for his and C.B.C. ' s stand on the Bible. Of all chapel programs, these with President McQuilkin have been most beneficial to me, and ones to remember for a lifetime. But, more specifically, it ' s a group of students that represent the entire scope of leadership at C.B.C. C.G.S. This cross section of students serves in several capacities; representing the student to different groups is among the most important. During the course of a school year the Student Coordinating Council will meet with the Board of Trustees, the Cabinet, the Advisory Council and sit on the Student Affairs Committee. A secondary role is that of trouble-shooting. The Student Coordinating Council makes sure that the many activities and events are properly scheduled. The Student Coordinating Council also sponsors several chapels that deal directly with student leadership, leadership banquets, the Formal, blood drives, all-school events and supports the Pro-Life Prayer Group. a A  ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT ASSOCIATION We believe this year, more than any previous year, that the Student Associ- ation could be characterized by no other term than transition . The Student Association has been groping in recent years for its own identity. We believe that the Student Association is more than a social organization. It has been our task to build upon foundations already in place, and to build in an imagi- native and corrective fashion. We saw a need to integrate the social and the spiritual aspects of student life, and have tried to do so in our activities. We wanted to encourage co-ed interaction in a non-threatening environment. We believe we have accomplished that to some extent. We also desired to involve the students in the local community. We believe The Concern has served that purpose. God has been faithful and has certainly done exceeding abundantly beyond all that we could have asked. Christopher Doyle, President Dean Reule, Vice President Betty Jordon, Secretary Ralph Jones, Treasurer George Terry, Senior Class President Andy Kamphausen, Junior Class President Mark Moore, Sophomore Class President John Beebe, Freshmen Class President Johnny Connelly, Men ' s Dorm President Gail Berry, Women ' s Dorm President Dr. Donald Trouten, Advisor THE STUDENT ASSOCIATION For C.B.C. we stand, as a memori- al to what it offers and to what we receive. We have gathered from every wind to place ourselves among the pillars of the passing line of supporting structure. We are all a part of it, and yet are each a whole, having an individual place in the school sys- tem and activity. As an Associ- ation, we are the fact of C. B. C. THE C.B.C. ROAD RACE Congratulations to all the winners! Organized by: Joe Grayton Marianna Kavanagh Martha Mahon Julian Riddle The Student Association was impressed with a vi- sion to reach out to the lo- cal community of Colum- bia. Seeing Columbia as our own Jerusalem (Acts 1:8), we wanted to do something of spiritual and eternal significance. It has come to our attention that many local blacks who have been called by God into full-time Christian min- istry do not have sufficient funds to attend training centers such as C.B.C. The desire for Biblical training exists but there is an acute financial need. The Concern has materialized to help meet that need. We, the Student Associ- ation, believe that by giv- ing more opportunities to black leaders for quality training these leaders will, in turn, return to their lo- cal communities to impact the city with the Gospel. The Concern is a scholar- ship fund that will be used specifically for Columbia area individuals who qualify both spiritually and academically and who de- sire to be trained at Co- lumbia Bible College. msjimm THE GRITS BOWL This year the Grit Bowl was sponsored by the Student Association, who are endeavoring to incor- porate a floating trophy into this annual sports spectacular. The North were rumored to have been in intensive training with closed practice sessions for two weeks before the main event, yet the South overcame overwhelming odds to once again clinch the title. In doing so they assured the retention of the name ' Grits Bowl ' for at least one more year, al- though the North are striving for victory and equality next year, by insuring the name be changed to ' The Cream of Wheat Bowl ' , should they win. THE BLOOD DRIVE - i uzaa On September 28, 1983 174 students donated 154 pints of blood. I would like to express my gratitude to: My assistant editor, Lisa (above), for her hand in every page. My husband, Dan, for running errands, cooking, cleaning, babysitting, and without whom this task would have been an impossibility. My advisors, Dr. Don Hall and Miss Ruth Marshall, for their patience and encouragement. The Photographer, Mark, for his many hours of work. Mrs. Jean Steyne, Jane Dawson, and Leigh Ann Weber for the typing they did. Deb Anderson, and the others who identified pictures. Department heads, secretaries, and organization leaders for returning forms, and answering endless questions. Mr. Bob Williams and Mr. Ralph Enlow for the loan of pre- cious old photographs. Past Finial editors (since its beginning in 1939), for accurately recording their slice of history . Mr. Arthur Mathews for his detailed, captivating account of C. B. C. history in his book Towers Pointing Upward. The Student Coordinating Council and each student for the privilege of editing the 1984 Finial. Bev Shepperson Editor THE FINIAL The Finial is a small slice of history which has been set between two covers as a pre- servative. 1964 Finial The theme of the 1984 Finial has been centered around the year verse: Hitherto hath the Lord helped us. . .Thy faithful- ness is unto all genera- tions. Information and photographs from the past have been scattered among the recording of the present. Testimonies to God ' s faithfulness from faculty, staff, and students presently at C. B. C. have also been interspersed among the pictures. As the silver trumpets on the cov- er herald the 60th anniver- sary of C. B. C. we can unitedly thank the Lord for helping us thus far, and praise Him for His faithful- ness to us. Thanks to the many photographers that took pictures, and a special thank you to Julie Petti- grew, Jim Dressner, and Dan Shepperson. Mark deFelice Photographer Jim Mills, President Doug Zachary, Vice President Nancy Johnson, Secretary) Treasurer Janet Singer, Social Chairman Dr. Terry Hulbert, Advisor GRAD LIFE COUNCIL This 60th anniversary year has been a time of looking back with gratitude at what the Lord has accomplished as well as a time of looking forward in expectancy and hope at what He will continue to do. The Lord continues to draw men and women from around the globe and from ■ various occupations and professions to study at the Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions. We fully expect God to fulfill His promise by . . .rewarding those who are seeking Him by faith . These are also exciting days for the Graduate School in that many are taking the initiative in blazing the trail for new ministries both here at the Graduate School and throughout Columbia. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is appar- ent in the lives of the faculty, staff, and students. In one voice we praise His name because, You are worthy, our Lord and God to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being. John Fain, President Grant Funk, Prayer Group Chairman Dr. Hap Struthers, Advisor OFF CAMPUS STUDENTS The Off-Campus students of C. B. C. and C. G. S. understand in an intense- ly personal way the reality of the words, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us. God has shown His mighty power in our lives as we have conquered the challenge of being a student, spouse, parent, and friend all at the same time. The joy of experiencing His faithfulness firsthand makes it all worthwhile as we strain to accomplish our Master ' s bidding during our student years. It is the job of the Off-Campus Student Association to help the school reach it ' s objectives in the lives of the students. This is accomplished in two ways. First, by serving the students in practical areas. This may include chapels geared toward particular needs, seminars on timely topics, or even a picnic such as the one last fall. Secondly, the Off-Campus Student Association is a liaison between the stu- dents and administration. Through this responsibility, harmonious inter- change takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect, and the objectives of the school are furthered. Where else could be experienced such things as: having to arrange a tight sched- ule allowing just enough time to get to school and slip into the seat as the bell rings; paying the rent, electricity, telephone, and fuel bills with an almost-empty pocket book (the children need shoes. Mommy needs stockings, and Daddy needs a much-needed theology textbook); rushing from the last class, swallowing a sandwich on the run to work; doing homework while the children are doing things to show their happiness in Daddy ' s being home; preparing sermons or Bi- ble lessons for Christian Service; working on a car in hopes that it might hold together long enough to get you to school tomorrow; receiving unexpected visi- tors just as a meal has been placed steaming-hot on the table; and let us not forget our exercises: All of this and one still needs to find time for daily person- al and family devotions. Do we regret it?. . .Not on your life! 1964 Finial WOMEN ' S DORM How does it all get done? Women ' s Open House, Sneak, Blood Drive . . . How do those halls actually stay quiet with 30 women excitedly discussing the activities of campus life? Women ' s Dorm Council. Dorm Council is the organization that plans activities, enforces rules, and serves the other women. The seven floorleaders serve the girls in the most visible positions. They give much time and love to the lives of the girls on their halls. The other members of the Dorm Council have faithfully fulfilled their responsibilities. Thank you Dorm Council 1984 for a great year. WOMEN ' S DORM COUNCIL Gail Berry, President Jeanette Rigdon, Vice President Kim Alexander, Prayer Coordinator Katherine Walton, Big Sister Coordinator Floorleaders: Mae Lee Hill Christine North Carol Ann Good Grace Bateman Lollie Welsh Kelly Faulk Eileen Smith MEN ' S DORM The goal of this year ' s Men ' s Dorm Council was taken from Hebrews 3:13, Encourage one another day by day ... so as not to become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. The Men ' s Dorm Council was responsible for maintain- ing order and leadership among the 200 undergrad men living on campus. Occasionally refered to as The D Team (for a good reason!), floorleaders pa- trolled seven halls, eager to encourage others to a quieter life of study and devotion . . . until February 10. On that date, the rooms were cleaned, the halls made into jungles, and the doors were opened for all to come join us for an evening at Disney World! Thanks to you sisters (Women ' s Dorm Council) for another great year at C. B. C. and pointing us on towards Christ. MEN ' S DORM COUNCIL John Connelly, President Ron Grant, Vice President Bob Orner, Prayer Coordinator Glen Fleck, Big Brother Coordinator Floorleaders; Dan Grant Charles Covington Rick Walker Steve Ward Ronnie Wilson Chris Adams COLUMBIA  LE C° L B _ M enS dorm toR AND LIBRAR THE SERVICE CHAIN The purpose of the service chain is to help facilitate meeting needs among the Village family. From each street two coordinators arrange meals, babysitting, or whatever the need may be for their own street. Those serving in this capacity are Gail Brower and Karen Daves on First Street, Bery Bryan and Lisa Chambers on Second Street, and Laurel Ferguson and Pat Morton on Third Street. Cheryl Bretsnyder organizes the Service Chain for the whole Village. True Christian community spirit comes forth as families in need are helped. While time and finances are tight, the Lord has seen fit to bless those that give of their resources. THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE The Social Committee is involved in plan- ning for a variety of social events. These get- togethers are planned so that the residents of the Village will have opportunities to meet with their neighbors for fellowship and fun. At the beginning of each school year the committee plans a ' Dessert ' where all resi- dents are invited. A Thanksgiving Dinner is also held for those who want to participate. Then, throughout the year there may be pro- gressive dinners, street get-togethers, and farewell parties. This years committee is headed up by Marsha Ruth, and the members are: Sherrie deFelice, Penny Terry, Naomi Byo, Kim Croyle, Reni Weixler, Tammy Harris, and Donna Cash. Mrs. Marga- ret Powell is our faithful friend and advisor. Jf ■ Iff J THE VILLAGE STUDENT MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP Student Missions Fellowship ' s purpose is to provide a means by which all students may be informed about, prepared for, and involved in foreign mis- sions. We seek to fulfill this purpose through various activities led by the SMF council members. Two of our larger activities are World Christian Week and the annual Summer Missions Project, this year to the Philippines. This is not to overlook the many other ways of fulfilling our purpose such as through periodic chapels, geographical prayer groups, summer missions seminars and opportunities, special activities, outreach to other schools, and a vast amount of publicity needed to bring these activities before the student body. Through these means we in SMF have sought to glorify our Lord and par- ticipate with Him in the extension of His kingdom around the world. 1 1 Jjt A ifj- ifer ■ — .- Wi A ' fl « 1 f In 1 m 1 ! r Larry Filbert, President Doug Addington, Vice President Donna Richardson, Secretary Jeff Weber, Treasurer Dr. Phil Steyne, Aduisor On December 18, 1952 an impossible goal was set by FMF to buy a plane for pioneer work in New Guinea at a cost of $5,000. Through sacrificial work and prayer and giving, on April 8, not only was the money for the plane in hand, but an additional $2,000. 1954 Finial GEOGRAPHICAL PRAYER GROUPS Geographical prayer groups are a signifi- cant ministry outlet to C.B.C. students, faculty, and staff. The vast need of a world separated from God presents a unique oppor- tunity to all of Christ ' s servants here to take an active part in world evangelization through intercessory prayer. Every Christian has been equipped to participate in this stra- tegic ministry, regardless of gifts, abilities, or vocational calling. SMF offers twelve differ- ent groups covering the entire earth that meet weekly to provide a unique small group atmosphere of personal involvement in God ' s global cause. These groups also meet occasionally during the chap- el hour to provide the setting whereby the whole C.B.C. commu- nity can unite in believing inter- cession for the lost and for our brothers and sisters laboring in the harvest for the Lord. One of the most exciting aspects of this minis- try is witnessing firsthand God ' s faithfulness unto all generations ' through answered prayer. WORLD CHRISTIAN WEEK Fullness and Fulfillment, what is that?! Sounds like what one would say after a good meal. But actually it was the theme of the World Christian Week. Fullness being the awakening of God ' s kingdom world- wide. David Bryant, a leading spokesman on prayer, and Malcolm Hunter from Sudan Interior Mission were the mai n speakers. Mission board representatives interacted with the students and provided short and long-term mission opportunities both at home and abroad. The week climaxed in a Concert of Prayer on Friday night which allowed the students to corporately beseech God to grant His Fullness and Fulfillment. World Christian Week was a tremendous blessing to many students and only eternity will reveal the ultimate results of our prayers. In the meantime, our prayer for the students is to be sensitive and obedient to God in prayer for His awakening and ad- vancement in our lives and world. World Christian Week Committee THE TEAM Every year the school sponsors a team, through Student Missions Fellow- ship, which ministers in various places throughout the world. During the Sum- mer of ' 84 our team trav- eled to the northern island of Luzon, Philippines a nd ministered with the Bibak Christian Fellowship. Team members participated in teaching, evangelism and discipleship in both Baguio City and La Trinidad as well as tribal areas in the nearby mountain province. In addition to the student members of the team one faculty member accompa- nies the group each year. Through this experience faculty members also gain an exposure to the things God is doing among other peoples and as a result grow in their personal commitment to God ' s pur- poses worldwide. David Currie Jonathan Hampshire Carol and Dennis Hickey Elizabeth and Hans Linnartz and son, Isaac Janet Singer Allen and Penny Terry Dr. Bill Davidson, Faculty Representative INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The general objectives of the committee are: To care for the physical and spiritual well-being of international students. To promote fellowship among the international students as well as between the international students and other students on this campus. To maximize the contribution of every international student to the C. B. C. family, to the churches and to the out- reach ministry to other international students in Columbia. To effectively meet these objectives, we have divided ourselves into smaller groups. The di- vision is based purely on location of each student for greater convenience in praying, studying together, going to church or market together, and exhorting one another in every way possible for the building of the body of Christ. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMMITTEE Zemo Audu, Chairman Dan Shepperson, Vice Chairman Mike Jih, Social Chairman Naoki Okamura, Social Chairman Ebenezer Bittencourt, Treasurer Naomi Hatori, Secretary Fanuel Chandomba, SMF Representative Dr. Alex Luc, Advisor Dr. Ken Mulholland, Assistant Advisor Mr. Bill Supplee, Assistant Advisor Mr. Bob Byers, Chairman of International Student Affairs Committee I am very grateful to God for meeting all my needs while in C.B.C. Zemo Audu God ' s goodness is overwhelming. Frans Van Den Heever It has been wonderful to see how faithful and gracious my Lord Jesus is in enabling me to study in a foreign language. With just two quarters of English in U. S. C, He has helped me finish my first quarter and start another one, and, 1 am sure that He will continue helping me until I finish my degree at C. B. C. Juana de Madera My separation from my dear fam- ily for two years for the sake of Christ has not been painful, but a joyful experience. I have witnessed how Christ is Lord of distance! He has satisfied my soul! Peter Kitula In times of loneliness and feeling distressed He always comforts me through His promises to let me know that He cares and He loves me at all times. Cynthia Yung 1926-1927 was the first year foreign students attended C. B. C. There were two from Poland, and one from Brazil! AMBASSADOR CHOIR In the beginning was the Word of Faith, and the Word of Faith was with the Ambassador Choir, and the Word of Faith was proclaimed by the Ambassador Choir. That Word of Faith is the Good News Celebra- tion found in Romans 10:9 and 10, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, re- sulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. All creatures of our God and King rejoiced as the 49 voice choir sang throughout the Carolinas during the school year and then toured Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas on the 12- day tour over spring break. President Jon Hampshire voiced, I especially enjoyed the unity that devel- oped among the choir members over those long bus ride days. To Know Him and Make Him Known was the message proclaimed in song, testimony, conversation, and lifestyle in homes, churches, schools, and prisons where the Choir endeavored to minister. The Walk of Faith was the challenge presented by the singers from the Romans 12:1 and 2 passage. Dr. Jerry Friesen stated, What a privilege it is to be a part of God ' s work in teaching music ministry skills, and proclaiming the Gospel in Song. This organization was formed in 1950. . .Those who first joined the choir, when asked what the purpose of the choir should be, were unanimous in selecting U Corinthians 5:20, Now then we are ambassadors for Christ . . .as the choir motto. 1964 Finial GRADUATE SINGERS The Columbia Graduate Singers, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Friesen, have banded together to serve the body of Christ through the medium of music. Using a variety of styles from Martin Luther ' s baroque works to the contemporary Ken Medeina, the Singers are focusing their music on C. B. C ' s theme verse for the year, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us. . .Thy faithfulness to all generations. During this 60th anniversary year, reflecting on God ' s faithfulness to this school and to His people corporately, the Graduate Singers present anthems of praise to God. He has blessed His people! Concerts are given on campus, throughout Columbia, with the year highlighted by weekend trips to minister in churches in the surrounding re- gion. How right it is to sing praises to th e Lord! Rick Walker, Bass Kelly Faulk, Alto Shannon Cross, Soprano Carlton Deal, Tenor Carrie Jean Price, Pianist Jane Duensing, Director LIVING HOPE Living Hope is a small musical ensemble with the following ministry objectives: To present Christ Jesus in such a way that others would find salva- tion and become hungry to be rooted and grounded in Him and His Word. To use music as a non-threatening means to present the plan of salvation and the abundant life with Christ as Lord. To incorporate the Scriptures with per- sonal testimony about the difference that Christ has made in their lives. To be aware that they represent Christ and Columbia Bible College not only through music but also in their appearance, speech, and lifestyle. The music they sing is contemporary in nature, yet traditional in message. The songs are easily accepted and enjoyed by people of all ages. The team is available for church services, youth meetings, summer camps, backyard Bible clubs and retreats. . . .according to His abundant mercy, hath begotten us again into a Living Hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It can only be received on the campus itself. WCBC plays contemporary Christian music during the live shows, broadcasts The Moody Broadcast- ing Network during the alternate hours, and is op- erated by the students alone. Th is adds a unique feature to the curriculum at Columbia Bible College because it provides students with a background in radio which can be valuable if a student wants to enter the field of radio either on the foreign field or here in the States. We, here at WCBC, thank the Lord for the way He has used WCBC in the lives of the students and pray He will continue to minister in the future. WCBC currently has five hours of live shows and hopes to increase the amount so we can broadcast the entire day. STUDENT WIVES ' FELLOWSHIP Pi Gamma . . . (Faithful Wives) The Student Wives ' Fellowship sought to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and ministry preparation specific to the needs of married women stu- dents and wives of students. This year ' s theme, God ' s Instruments , taken from Romans 6:13, emphasized the importance of yielding oneself to the Lord Jesus Christ to be used by Him as an instrument of righteousness. Regular on campus meetings and city area prayer groups conducted throughout the year included guest lectures by spiritually mature women as well as times of Bible study, corporate prayer and fellowship. The topics ad- dressed focused on specific areas of ministry essential to our roles as wives of Christian workers. From left to right: Mrs. Beverly Struthers, Advisor Delisa Smith, Vice President Melissa Thornton, Social Bea Barkley, Music Laurinda Erickson, President Lorraine Abeyta, Prayer Groups • Gayle Gestrich, Secretary Treasurer NOT PICTURED Robin Thiele, Publicity Liz Davis, Hospitality One highlight of the year was a special lunch- eon with Dr. Helen Roseveare, well known author, lecturer, and missionary for 20 years in the Congo. KOINONIA CO-OP The Koinonia Co-op is a group of over 70 families of C. B. C. faculty, staff, and stu- dents. We all work together to purchase good quality food at lower-than-store prices. Through membership dues and one person from each family working a few hours a month, we strive together to save both time and money. Produce, in season, is purchased each week, and a selection of food staples bi- weekly. The co-operative effort has been go- ing for five years. We have especially seen God ' s faithfulness this year in our new loca- tion made possible by the C. B. C. adminis- tration ' s gift of two walk-in coolers. So, to paraphrase the year verse, the Lord has helped us these past five years , and we pray His faithfulness in C. B. C. ' s generations to come! Now we ' re starting to preach. Let ' s move on. Dr. Phil Steyne A PRAYER by Laurie Lind Lord, May I not be just another cold, stone-hearted being In this impersonal, uncaring world of not seeing. Send me out into life with the warmth of Your love So that I may be a living example of Its ability to heal and to melt the cold heart Of stone, which society builds. Lord, help me to start New trends, by living joy and singing praise And glorifying You. For in these ways, Real missionaries are seen. Lord, I want to be Your missionary, that the world may feel Your love through me. Amen. He has multiplied my work in the lives of graduates around the globe. Paul Wright The Lord has helped me through my student days at C.B.C. by giving me a loving supportive wife who is a life- time team member in ministry. If this statement is doubted, just look over its membership. Please note the Ph.D. we have in our midst, the up-and-com- ing musician, already successful missionaries, ministers, and school teachers who are seeking further training, besides one who is the pride and joy of a famous hospital. Each member is planning to do fulllime work for the Lord. His faithfulness is to all generations . The Junior class sponsored a series of fun Walt Disney movies to encourage as much student and family participation as possible. The class chapels were designed as times for special fellowship with other class members and were varied somewhat. We listened to a cassette made for us by Dr. Bennett and then countered with a tape of our own sent to Dr. Bennett and also to the Todd family, whom we support in prayer as they work in West Germany with the Kurds. A FINAL WORD TO OUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES For over 60 years God ' s faithfulness has been exemplified at Columbia Bible College and in the lives of its graduates. A stream of faithful servants of God have literally encircled the globe heralding the good news of the gospel — that Christ died according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He arose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). Would it not be a tragedy if you knew about C.B.C., knew some of its students, alumni, faculty or staff, but never knew the God who has so faithfully brought C.B.C. this far and the Savior, Jesus Christ, whom they pro- claim? Perhaps you ' ve been on campus, or even given to the college, still Jesus Christ does not dwell in YOUR heart since you have not yet received His gift of eternal life. Well, there ' s no better time than now to trust Christ. The Apostle Paul tells us that now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation (II Corinthians 6:2). And James, speaking of the brevity and uncer- tainty of life, warned, ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away (James 4:14). If you would trust Christ for your eternal salvation, you must first honestly acknowledge to God that you are a sinner For all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Then you must realize that you are unable to save yourself because, as Paul wrote, by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast ' (Ephesians 2:8,9). Finally, you must see yourself not as POSSIBLY facing the judgment of God SOMEDAY, but as facing imminent danger. The Lord Jesus Christ declared, he that believeth not is condemned already (John 3:18). As you can see, the unconverted are not in an enviable position. The all-important decision to trust Christ should not be delayed. Our faithful God is ready to save you now and promises that he that believeth on the Son (Jesus Christ) hath everlasting life and will not come into judgment but is passed from death unto life (John 3:36; John 5:24). What is more, He promises you a heavenly home which the Lord Jesus is now preparing (John 14:2). Standing before a holy God — a condemned sinner and unable to save yourself — how will you respond to Him who is both able and willing to save you? Our prayer at C.B.C. is that you will, in humility and sincerity, call upon Jesus Christ to save you. The promise of the Bible is: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For whoso- ever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:9,10,13). When you have done this, you will be His and He will be yours for ever and ever! And the C.B.C 60th year verse, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us , will be a living reality to you, too.
