Hulbert. Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. Not only do we appreciate his faithfulness in serving us. but also the wealth of experience he brings to CBC. Following training at Dallas Theological Seminary. Dr. Hulbert taught Greek at Northwestern College in Minneapolis and also pastored churches. From 1957-69 he and his wife served with the Africa Evangelical Fellowship in Zambia, teaching at a rural Bible Institute and later founding the urban Bible College of Central Africa. After two years as Director of the Africal Evangelical Fellowship in the United States, Dr. Hulbert was appointed Dean of the Graduate School in 1972. He was appointed Provost in 1982. Since his arrival at the Grad School it has grown in size with over 300 students and 12 faculty members. Dr. Hulbert is a gardening enthusiast, dedicated teacher, administrator and friend to both graduate and undergraduate students. He is always ready with a word of encouragement, advice or whatever need a student might have. A combination of competence, experience and service is a testimony to God ' s workmanship. Truly, Terry Hulbert is God ' s Visual Aid among us! Growing — Closer Together As We Grow Closer To Him He Is The Bond Which Brings Us Together Pain Draws Us to Christ. Growing Steadily Upward Toward Our Goal The Calling Of Christ ikkkkkWkJddddd W ' f fipffifif f f mm To tTHti? w nm Student Life CBC Style The CBC Student Handbook described the Columbia Bible College family as community of disciples . The school had a common goal of daily victorious Christian Living and fruitful service for Jesus Christ , in order to make knowing Him a reality and mak- ing Him known a priority. There were many ways students, faculty and staff alike, worked to reach these goals. The CBC atmosphere prompted the student toward spiritual growth in many ways. All CBC family mem- bers were encouraged to pray both in Chapel Services, Geographical Prayer Groups and Koinonia Small Prayer Groups. They were also prompted to spe|| time with God daily on a individual, personal ba ' Students were taught the importance of the loi Day and participation in a Biblical local church. Tj also offered the opportunity for students to mini while still in a learning atmosphere, through Chrisi Service assignments. f Each student learned through practical experience how to live with his fellowmen. This was learned both through relationships within the dorms and through contacts around campus. Even during the pressures of exams and projects, students strove to have the mind of Christ Jesus, esteeming the others around them as better than themselves. (Philippians 2:4-5) Servant- hood was learned through College Service assign- ments. | The CBC family members grew, both in their knowl- edge of God and in their personal responsibility to God, Knowing Him and making Him known . For whom The Bell Tolls When one entered CBC, a beil should have gone off in his head ... in fact one did several times daily. Bells rang here as gentle reminders of all that had to be done. At 6il5 a.m. dorm students were greeted with a ringing good morning and at 6t40 a.m. thef were prompted to begin their quiet-time. The 7ilO a.m. bell rang out that breakfast was soon to bl served in Leavel ' s Cafeteria. The bells would then re« l om their hard morning ' s work, not to be heard again until 7tO0 p.m.. when they reminded us that studiM awaited and there was much to be done before bedl time. The bells helped us to learn discipline and thai discipline brought about growth. So if anyone won| ders where the bell tolls . . It tolls at CBC. Hitting The Books Studying was a prime pastime of CBC students — loved by most, tolerated by a few and needed by all. Understanding God ' s Word was no easy task, but professors stimulated students to know God and knowing Him involved learning. Because of this, the Learning Resources Center (affectionately known as the LRC) became the school ' s melting pot and in essence became all things to all men. To the sociable Freshman, the LRC became a place to study a little and socialize Q-U-l-E-T-L-Y. To the struggling Sophomore it was a haven of wise Juniors and Seniors who had survived BIB 203 and were will- ing to offer help and give testimony to the fact that there was life after hermeneutics. The Junior viewed the LRC as a place to ponder theology and day-dream about becoming a Senior To the Senior it became a quiet place to work on his doctrinal and his Senior Chapel message. And to the graduate student — it was simply home. Studying brought about growth and the LRC was a place to laugh together, to struggle together, to share together, to learn together and to grow together in Him. Socializing CBC Style! Social life at CBC was a conglomeration of a and events. Bible College student s enjoyed j sponsored by the Student Association during j quarter. Brother and sister halls ate a picn| together and they participated in an excitii| race which included, among other things, a c| a three legged race, a skateboard push ani squeeze. The Graduate School also held a pic| ing fall quarter which offered good food. J| games for all. ? = ; - ' - - ' --K-i ' ' -v i: ' ' =;3 Women ' s Open House was al ohieftddun) tcr. Social life at CBC encouraged development in relating to others. This development was brought about in a variety of ways. The cafeteria became not only a place to ell place to socialize as well. Wednesday night was inf mally considered date night, when one would ofi, see a brave, but slightly nervous titan walking over collect the girl of his choice for dinner. After dine he would take her for a walk down that famous sf of asphalt known as Faculty Row. The cafeteria | many times the place to hold hall dates, where I entire men ' s hall took one entire women ' s haltf dinner. Themes for dress ranged from dressy to coun try to zany and all involved had a great time. Mi l- tlmes were also tiroes to share with one aj ' small groups, to meet new people, to lau| encourage one another. The Student Center was also a place where pebj met. Whether it was to shoot pool or play a game cti ping-pong or just to console one another when thiei mailbox was. once again, empty. Social life took on many other forms but the result was always the same growing and developing Christ centered relation- ships. Students Entering Winter Quarter 1st row: Nelson Haynes. Musical Ministries Musical opportunities at CBC were many-faceted and encouraged growth and ministry. This year the music department offered something for everyone in both style and experience level. The Grad Singers were an ensemble composed of graduate students who sang music of a more classical style. The Chapel Choir offered experience in the area of group singing and was ideal for either newcomers to choral singing or for Freshmen who were entering into the CBC music program for the first time. The Ambassador Choir sang music encompassing a vari- ety of styles and the musical team. Creation, per- formed music with a more contemporary sound. Whatever style, mode or form the music took on. all of the musical groups at CBC worked toward the same goal — knowing Him first and then making Him known to everyone to which they ministered. The Ambassador Choir and Grad Singers were under the direction of Dr. Jerry Friesen. The Chapel Choir was directed by Bill Hoyt during the Fall quarter and by William Supplee for the remainder of the year. Cynthia Nelson worked with the Musical Team. The theme of the choir ' s program was Christ ' s second coming and the sort of people Christians should be in light of His coming. During the Fall quarter, in addition to local concerts, the choir spent a weekend ministering in Savannah, Georgia and in Charleston. South Carolina. Choir members spent their Spring break participating in a tour including concerts in North Carolina. West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois. Tennessee, and South Caroli- na. Formed under the auspices of the Ambassador Choir, the new musical team included choir members. They were directed by Cynthia Nelson. Students were required to achieve a minimum number of Physical Education Points per week during the quarter. Students were also able to earn these points by participating in a physical education class or else by participating in intramurals. Although these points seemed tough and strenuous to some, others looked forward to their daily workouts. ikkkWd fddddd fdddM )f f ( f ( Pff fiPi( ( mm6 70 EWES IN nm ROBERTSON McQUILKIN. ( ■ Any attempt to record a year ' s growth of nearly nine- hundred students and over one-hundred Faculty and Staff members into a mere one-hundred and fourty- four pages, would not only be impossible, but prepos- terous as well. Because oi this I will not claim to have done so, although I did try to record some of the ways the CBC Family, grew during the I9S3-83 school year. If my endeavor has in any way been successful, all glory goes to God. There are many ways in which a book of this sort may be used. It can be used to reminisce in the years to come and reflect upon the growth we experienced. But I think perhaps the best use of the book was very aptly stated by President McQuilkin in last year ' s FINIAL, I plan to use it as a prayer reminder and, year ' s hence, to identify people whose path I cross once again or whose path I would like to cross! Although there was no formal yearbook staff there were several people who helped near the end of the job when things became rather hectic, therefore, I. would like to thank Bev Shepperson, Ginger Lopp, Martha Williams, Lee Lipscomb, Lisa Neil and Joy Bergey for the help they gave out of the love of their hearts. I would also like to thank Mark DeFelice and all of those working under him for providing me with excellent photographs. A thank-you should be ex- tended to Mr. Bob Williams and his secretaries in Information Services the Coordinating Council for all of their advice and encouragement, my sister. Dale Mock, for drawing the figures for both the cover and divider page designs and Buzz Fleming, our Josten ' s representative for all of his help. Lastly. I would like to show appreciation for all those who supported me both through prayer and encouragement. Putting this book together has not been easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever done with ease. I only thank the Lord for the strength He gave to me to finish and, I hope, to finish well. Connie D. Williams Mark Defelice, Photographer Conne D.
